Therioaphis trifolii (Monell) is a well‐known pest in alfalfa cultivation in China. Individuals of T. trifolii were allowed to feed on 10 alfalfa cultivars and their growth, reproduction, and population life table parameters were estimated. Nymphs that fed on Hunter River had the longest development time, whereas nymphs that fed on Defu had the shortest development time. Adults that fed on Debao, Zhongmu No. 2, and Defu had the shortest development time, whereas adults that fed on Golden Empress and Hunter River had the longest development times. Individuals that fed on Zhungeer produced the greatest number of offspring (13.950), and those that fed on Hunter River produced the fewest offspring (6.000). The survival rate of T. trifolii was the highest on Algonquin and lowest on Hunter River, whereas the survival time was the longest on Golden Empress and shortest on Debao. The population that fed on Algonquin had the highest intrinsic growth rate (0.560) and shortest population doubling time (1.237 days), whereas those that fed on Hunter River had the lowest intrinsic growth rate (0.217) and longest population doubling time (3.194 days). The life table parameters of the experimental T. trifolii population were used to quantify the resistance strengths of the cultivars. Results indicate that the Hunter River cultivar may effectively resist damage from T. trifolii. This study provides a theoretical basis for breeding aphid‐resistant alfalfa cultivars, enabling further research into the prevention and control of aphid infestation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Litsea cubeba essential oil (LCEO) is a broad-spectrum bacteriostatic substance produced from the fruit of the Litsea tree that has been used for the treatment of various diseases in China for thousands of years. Here, the antifungal activities of LCEO against 10 different fungi (Naganishia diffluens, Fusarium sacchari, Cladosporium tenuissimum, Fusarium proliferatum, Fusarium verticillioides, Fusarium subglutinans, Mucor racemosus, Penicillium oxalicum, Penicillium chrysogenum , and Aspergillus niger) that cause rot to waxberries were assessed. The chemical components of LCEO and its modes of action against P. oxalicum were investigated. Citral (32.62 %) was characterized as the main component of LCEO by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. LCEO exhibited excellent antifungal activities against all 10 fungi. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration of LCEO against P. oxalicum were 2.24 and 4.48 g/L, respectively. Furthermore, LCEO (MIC) compromised membrane permeability and integrity, caused leakage of the cell components, and increased production of malondialdehyde and reactive oxygen species. Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy indicated that the morphology and ultrastructure of the LCEO-treated hyphal cell membrane and organelles were severely damaged. Meanwhile, LCEO increased the shelf life of waxberries from 1–2 to 5–6 d. LCEO is a potential ecologically friendly alternative to commercial fungicides to inhibit postharvest fungal contamination of waxberries during shipment and storage. People in modern society are media multitaskers due to portable devices and omnipresent wireless networks, and college students are no exception. Previous studies have indicated that students' media multitasking behaviours in class harm their academic performances, and understanding the reasons for college students' engagement in such behaviour is meaningful. However, the literature takes media multitasking behaviour as an audience behaviour, which ignores the interaction between students and their surroundings. This study fills this gap by emphasizing the role of the social learning process. A survey was conducted in a public and comprehensive university in western China, and a total of 457 valid respondents were obtained. The results from PLS‐SEM revealed that college students' in‐class media multitasking behaviours were influenced by both observational learning (ie, imitating others) and reinforcement learning (ie, in‐class interventions), and this learning process was shaped by students' media multitasking self‐efficacy and self‐management of learning. These findings contribute to the current literature by providing a relatively new perspective for understanding college students' in‐class media multitasking behaviours, and suggestions about how to deal with such behaviours are also provided. Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN), the most common primary renal disease, is characterized by abnormal IgA1 deposition. IgAN is caused by NOD-like receptor pyrin domain-containing-3 (NLRP3), which regulates innate immunity. Gubentongluo (GB) decoction, a traditional Chinese medicine, is an effective clinical treatment for IgAN in China. However, little is known about the underlying mechanisms. In this study, IgA1, which is separated from patients with IgAN, together with GB decoction was applied to treat human mesangial cells (HMCs). CCK-8 and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were used to assess cell proliferation and the production of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), respectively. qPCR and Western blot were applied to detect the expression levels of NLRP3, IL-1β, and caspase-1. Our results showed that GB decoction inhibited IgA1-induced cell proliferation and IL-1β production. Furthermore, IgA1-induced upregulation of IL-1β, NLRP3, and caspase-1 was reduced after treatment with GB. Interestingly, MCC950, an NLRP3 inhibitor, showed similar effect as GB decoction. Additionally, NLRP3 overexpression stimulated cell proliferation, IL-1β secretion, and the expressions of IL-1β and caspase-1 in HMCs. But these effects could be alleviated by GB decoction. This work proposed a kinetic model for RP-3, the most widely used military-civilian aviation fuel in China. Four hydrocarbons within the typical size of major components in RP-3, i.e., n-dodecane, iso-dodecane (2,2,4,6,6-pentamethylheptane), decalin and n-butylbenzene, were included in the component palette to improve the ability of the surrogate to mimic the properties related to the molecular weight. Seven properties, cetane number, molecular weight, H/C ratio, threshold sooting index, lower heating value, the proportion of -CH 3 and -CH 2 in the total carbons were selected as targets aiming at the comprehensive emulation of the chemical and physical propensities of RP-3. By sequential use of the genetic algorithm and a local search method, a surrogate containing 27.44% n-dodecane, 28.81% iso-dodecane, 26.12% decalin and 17.63% n-butylbenzene by mole was formulated. The autoignition delay times of the surrogate were measured using a heated rapid compression machine at pressures of 10, 15, 20 bar and equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 over low-to-intermediate temperature range. Results show that the surrogate can not only emulate the target properties but also the key non-targeted properties. A kinetic model of 3065 species and 11,898 reactions was then developed based on the proposed surrogate to describe the chemical process during the combustion of RP-3. Simulations show that the model can predict the fundamental combustion datasets in the present work and literature satisfactorily, suggesting the rationality and applicability of the model. Rate of production and evolution histories of OH and HO 2 were then conducted using the kinetic model to provide insight into the combustion of RP-3. • A disease occurrence characterized by fever and rash was monitored in China. • The etiological and epidemiological investigation was initiated. • We proved that a novel species of genus Ehrlichia was its pathogen. • We named the new species as " Candidatus Ehrlichia erythraense". From March to June 2021, the reported number of clinically diagnosed endemic typhus in Anhui and Hubei provinces of China nearly increased four-fold compared with the monthly average numbers in last 5 years. An etiological and epidemiological investigation was initiated. The clinical specimens from the reported patients and the potential vector ticks were collected for molecular and serological detection, as well as cell culturing assay to identify the potential pathogen. Polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis of rrs and groEL showed that the pathogen from these patients was Ehrlichia sp., isolated from Haemaphysalis longicornis attached to these patients. The phylogenetic analysis based on 39 Ehrlichia genomes suggested that it should be taxonomically classified as a novel species, tentatively named " Candidatus Ehrlichia erythraense". A total of 19 of 106 cases were confirmed as Candidatus Ehrlichia erythraense infections by polymerase chain reaction, sequencing, and/or serological tests. The most frequent symptoms were fever (100%), rashes (100%), asthenia (100%), anorexia (100%), and myalgia (79%). The occurrence of the disease presenting with fever and rashes in Anhui and Hubei provinces was caused by a novel species of the genus Ehrlichia ; physicians need to be aware of this newly-discovered pathogen to ensure appropriate testing, treatment, and regional surveillance. Background: Norovirus is a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis among children. Previous studies based on symptomatic infections indicated that mutations, rather than recombination drove the evolution of the norovirus ORF2. These characteristics were found in hospital-based symptomatic infections, whereas, asymptomatic infections are frequent and contribute significantly to transmission. Methods: We conducted the first norovirus molecular epidemiology analysis covering both symptomatic and asymptomatic infections derived from a birth cohort study in the northern China. Results: During the study, 14 symptomatic and 20 asymptomatic norovirus infections were detected in 32 infants. Out of the 14 strains that caused symptomatic infections, 12 strains were identified as GII.3[P12], and others were GII.4[P31]. Conversely, 17 asymptomatic infections were caused by GII.4[P31], two by GII.2[P16], and one by GII.4[P16]. Regardless of symptomatic and asymptomatic infections, the mutations were detected frequently in the ORF2 region, and almost all recombination were identified in the RdRp-ORF2 region. The majority of the mutations were located around the predefined epitope regions of P2 subdomain indicating a potential for immune evasion. Background: We aimed to explore the association between long-term exposure to particulate matter ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components including fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood pressure, triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and waist circumference among adults and elderly in south China.Methods: We surveyed 6628 participants in the chronic disease and risk factors surveillance conducted in 14 districts of Guangdong province in 2015. MetS was defined based on the recommendation by the Joint Interim Societies' criteria. We used the spatiotemporal land-use regression (LUR) model to estimate the two-year average exposure of ambient air pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and O3) at individual levels. We recorded other covariates by using a structured questionnaire. Generalized linear mixed model was used for analysis.Results: A 10-μg/m3 increase in the two-year mean PM2.5 exposure was associated with a higher risk of developing MetS [odd ratio (OR): 1.17, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01, 1.35], increased risk of fasting blood glucose level. (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.02, 1.36), and hypertriglyceridemia (OR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.18, 1.58) in the adjusted/unadjusted models (all P < 0.05). We found significant interaction between PM2.5 and the region, exercise on the high TG levels, and an interaction with the region, age, exercise and grain consumption on FBG (P interaction < 0.05).Conclusions: Long-term exposure to PM2.5 was associated with MetS, dyslipidemia and FBG impairment. Perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA) exposure poses a potential hazard to wildlife and humans. Food consumption is one of the main routes of PFAA exposure for the general population, with aquatic organisms being the major contributors. To evaluate the risk of coastal residents' intake of wild aquatic organisms, 14 PFAAs were detected in crucian carp and oriental river prawn from 18 sampling sites from the lower reaches of Yangtze River. The total PFAA (∑PFAA) concentrations ranged from 5.9 to 51.3 ng/g wet weight (ww) in the muscle of crucian carp and river prawn, suggesting the potential risk to human and wildlife. Perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and long-chain PFAAs (C ≥ 10) were the main pollutants in the tissues of crucian carp and river prawn, which are known for their higher bioaccumulation capacity. The ∑PFAA concentration in all the samples showed an increasing trend from upstream to downstream and was higher in the south bank, owing to population density, prevailing winds, background pollution and industrial emission. Principal component analysis-multiple linear regression and Pearson correlation analysis showed that WWTP effluent, industrial pollution and surface runoff ware the main sources of PFAAs in the aquatic organisms and industrial pollution highest contributor, suggesting better regulation is needed to manage them. The assessment of risk to human health and wild life suggested a low risk for most residents of cities along the Yangtze River except for resident of Nantong, where frequent consumption of wild aquatic organisms may cause potential risk to human health, especially for traditional eaters and middle-aged people. • PFAAs were monitored in fish and shrimp along the lower Yangtze River, China. • ∑PFAA ranged from 5.9 to 51.3 ng/g in the muscle of fish and shrimp. • PFAA were higher downstream and near the southern shore, linked with mixed reasons. • Industrial pollution was the main potential source of PFAAs in aquatic products. Background & Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has been proposed to replace the concept of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The relationship between MAFLD and breast lesions has not been reported. Therefore, we aimed to explore their prevalence and relationship among general population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University. After considering the exclusion criteria, 46,547 consecutive women who synchronously accepted breast and abdominal ultrasonography during one physical check-up between January 2015 and September 2018 were enrolled in this study. Prevalence of breast masses (BM), BI-RADS categories breast lesions and MAFLD in general population were revealed and the association between MAFLD and breast mass, BI-RADS categories breast lesions was analyzed by conducting logistic regression models. Results: Of 46,547 participants, 8,020 (17.23%) had BM, 6,345 (13.63%) had MAFLD. Women with MAFLD had a lower BM prevalence than those without MAFLD (11.87% vs.18.08%; p<0.001). Overall, women with MAFLD had a lower risk of BM compared to those without MAFLD (adjusted OR=0.849, 95%CI: 0.775-0.930, p<0.001). Analysis based on BI-RADS categories breast lesions demonstrated that MAFLD is negatively related to BI-RADS 2/3 categories breast lesions (BI-RADS 2 category adjusted OR=0.980, 95%CI: 0.906-1.061, p=0.626; BI-RADS 3 category adjusted OR=0.736, 95%CI: 0.641-0.845, p=0.001), while associated with higher risk of BI-RADS ≥4 categories breast lesions (adjusted OR=1.220, 95%CI: 1.005-1.480, p=0.044). Subgroup analysis across age (18-44, 45-54 and≥55 years old) and body mass index (<25 and ≥25kg/m²) demonstrated that MAFLD was negatively associated with BI-RADS 2/3 categories breast lesions in premenopausal and perimenopausal women, and positively associated with BI-RADS ≥4 categories breast lesions in postmenopausal women, whether in obese or not. Conclusions: MAFLD was inversely associated with BM and BI-RADS 2/3 categories breast lesions in premenopausal and perimenopausal women, irrespective of obesity presence; MAFLD increased the risk of BM and BI-RADS ≥4 categories breast lesions in postmenopausal women. • A multiplex RT-PCR assay for the simultaneous detection of soybean mosaic virus, bean common mosaic virus and cucumber mosaic virus was developed. • Parameters, including annealing temperature, extension time, number of cycles, and primer type and concentration, were optimised. • The multiplex RT-PCR was highly sensitive, rapid and simple, and was evaluated using field samples of soybean plants infected with these viruses. Soybean is susceptible to viral diseases which are often present as mixed infections. The individual simplex RT-PCR methods used for the identification of multiple viruses are more tedious and time-consuming than the corresponding multiplex RT-PCR. This study used soybean mosaic virus (SMV), bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and cucumber mosaic virus (CMV)-infected leaf samples from southern China as the test materials to evaluate a multiplex RT-PCR assay developed for the simultaneous detection of these viruses. The parameters optimised included the annealing temperature, extension time, number of cycles, and primer type and concentration. The specific fragments sizes obtained by the multiplex RT-PCR were 550 bp (SMV), 288 bp (BCMV) and 99 bp (CMV). The assay was tested using infected soybean samples obtained from farmers' fields in Sichuan Province, China. The multiplex RT-PCR assay had high sensitivity, was rapid and simple, and could be used for the diagnosis of soybean infected with various combinations of these viruses in the field. • The rate of alcohol use in patients with epilepsy (PWE) was 24.2%. • Been males, had a history of alcohol use were associated with alcohol use in PWE. • Heavy, frequent alcohol use were associated with worsening of seizure control in PWE. Alcohol consumption has multiple negative consequences for people with epilepsy, including precipitation of seizure or status epilepticus, worsening of seizure control, increased adverse effects of anti-seizure medications, increased sudden unexpected death in epilepsy, and premature mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate alcohol use and explore the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with alcohol use among patients with epilepsy in western China. A face-to-face questionnaire on alcohol use was conducted at Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital from December 2020 to June 2021. All adult patients who came to our epilepsy center (inpatient and outpatient) were invited to participate in this study. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the possible risk factors associated with alcohol use within the last 12 months. A total of 425 patients completed this study, 24.2% of patients with epilepsy had used alcohol within the last 12 months, being male and having a history of alcohol use were independently associated factors. Among patients who had used alcohol within the last 12 months, 52.4% complained of worsening of seizure control, heavy alcohol use, and frequent alcohol use were independently associated with worsening of seizure control after alcohol use in patients with epilepsy. This study revealed that the rate of alcohol use among patients with epilepsy was high. Male patients with a history of alcohol use were more prone to alcohol use after a diagnosis of epilepsy. Heavy alcohol use and frequent alcohol use were independently associated with worsening of seizure control after alcohol use in patients with epilepsy. • Nursing method during cub development increases male giant panda's reproductive success in adulthood. • Group housing management in sub-adult period can affect the captive giant panda's mate choice. • Exposure to urine odour stimulus changes courtship behavior of captive giant pandas in estruses. • Male giant panda's courtship behaviour is related to the reproductive performance in captivity. Through the implementation of giant panda ex situ conservation breeding programs, the giant panda has successfully been protected and has attained many conservation achievements. As of 2019, there were nearly 600 captive giant pandas worldwide, and the number of captive populations and the richness of genetic diversity have basically reached a self-sustainable state. However, to date, most captive adult male giant pandas do not mate naturally, and the reason is unclear, which has serious implications for implementation of the reintroduction training program of captive giant pandas. We used a combination of methods evaluating life history traits, behavioral observation, and bioinformatics statistical analysis and conducted comprehensive research on the factors that affected the natural mating success rates of captive adult giant pandas. The results showed that the management mode of singleton and parent rearing during cub development and mixed male and female group housing during the stage of subadult learning skills and experience could effectively improve the natural reproduction success rate of captive adult male giant pandas. Using odor stimulation during the mating period could change the courtship behavior of adult giant pandas in captivity, as males, when courting estrous females, behaved in a way that did not lead to successful mating. Applying these results to the breeding management and mating strategies of captive male giant pandas could not only help improve appropriate reproductive behavior and subsequently increase reproductive performance but also may provide more candidates for China's giant panda reintroduction programs.
