A continuous monitoring of neurological status can help in reporting the physical and mental health of a person. This can be capitalized for building a healthcare tracking system using a wearable device and a handheld mobile device. In this paper, we have used the non-EEG physiological biosignals dataset which gives practicability among subjects for acquiring data easily from wearable device sensors linearly and comfortably rather than the way of putting the subjects in a cumbersome setup laboratory. This paper proposes a custom fully convolutional-LSTM (FCN-LSTM) network to identify the neurological status of a subject using multivariate time series physiological sensor data. The proposed architecture uses parallel stacks of the convolutional layers and LSTM cells. This combination of different network types is significant for the selected problem as the fully convolutional section of the model extracts the local spatial features in the data, while the LSTM network handles the high-level features and temporal dependencies. The proposed FCN-LSTM model yielded a high accuracy of 98.6% and a precision of 98% on the non-EEG dataset from UT-Dallas. The average accuracy of single-subject results of the dataset using the proposed model was observed to be 99.26%. The results from the proposed model are significantly improved when compared with various state-of-the-art works on this problem. These results strongly suggest that this model, when put on a wearable device, can be effectively used to detect the neurological status or stress that the subject may be going through in real time. This paper presents an equilibrium-based modeling framework for emergency response (ER) workload balancing for robust operations in metropolitan areas. The problem is formulated as a non-linear mathematical program (NLP), which determines the optimal maximum workload for each ER station such that the weighted sum of the area-wide expected response time and its variation is minimized. The concept of Marginal Cost of Uncertainty (MCU) is introduced to measure the impact of a station's workload increase on the robustness of the area-wide service performance. The solution of the NLP is proved to be equivalent to a state of equilibrium in which all stations have a minimum MCU. An iterative solution methodology is developed, which adopts a modified version of the Frank-Wolfe decomposition algorithm for convex optimization. The workload is iteratively balanced among adjacent stations until the state of equilibrium is achieved. At equilibrium, no station can reduce its MCU value by unilaterally shifting a part of its workload to any other station(s) in the area. The developed framework is applied to determine the optimal workload balancing strategy for 58 fire stations serving the City of Dallas. Nowadays, in researches on electric vehicle routing problems, in order to improve the delivery efficiency and reduce the routing cost, many important elements are broad discussed such as the customer time window, the routing algorithm, the electric energy consumption, etc. In these, the routing algorithm is the key element to achieve a good solution. Based on this background, the paper investigates the routing algorithm, then adopts the elitist genetic algorithm and proposes an improved neighbor routing initialization method for solving the electric vehicle routing problem. In our method, the electric vehicle energy consumption is used as the main component of the routing system. The neighbor routing initialization enables the routing system to choose the close route from a suitable first customer in the initialization, which makes the routing search faster and find the global optimal route easily. The simulations on the Solomon benchmark data and the Hiland Dairy milk delivery example in Dallas, Texas, USA verifies the good performance of the method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Drawing on qualitative data from an exploratory study of the experiences of audit pair researchers—pairs of black, white, and Latinx field testers—in an urban nightlife study in Austin, Dallas, and Houston, Texas, this paper examines nightclub owners' use of what I identify as "exclusionary tools"—that is, "dress codes," "steering," and "fake guest lists." Using Critical Race Theory's critique of neutrality, I argue that these exclusionary tactics create a welcoming atmosphere for white patrons while maintaining limits on the participation of African Americans and other peoples of color. This paper offers empirical examples of how these exclusionary practices limit legal challenges to discrimination in the first place and concludes with a discussion of potential methodological approaches for expanding this exploratory study and further identifying systematic exclusionary practices. This article presents the hardware and software architectures used to implement the Modbus Extension (ModbusE) IIoT gateway, the performance of the acquisition cycle at the PRU real-time programmable core level, the acquisition cycle communication flow—dispatcher—OPC UA server (Linux)—OPC UA client (Windows) as well as the performance analysis of data communications between the IIoT ModbusE gateway and the OPC UA client (Windows). In order to be able to implement both the ModbusE acquisition cycle and the OPC UA server, the BeagleBone Black Board was chosen as the hardware platform. This board uses the Sitara AM335x processor (Texas Instruments (TI), Dallas, TX, USA) from Texas Instruments. Thus, the acquisition cycle was implemented on the PRU0 real-time core, and the OPC UA server, running under the Linux operating system, was implemented on the ARM Cortex A8 processor. From the analysis of the communication speed of the messages between the OPC UA client and the ModbusE servers, it was found that the ModbusE acquisition cycle speed was higher than the acquisition speed of the OPC UA client. This paper presents a new data fusion multiscale observation product (MOP) for flood emergencies. The MOP was created by integrating multiple sources of contributed open-source data with traditional spaceborne remote sensing imagery in order to provide a sequence of high spatial and temporal resolution flood inundation maps. The study focuses on the 2015 Memorial Day floods that caused up to USD 61 million dollars of damage. The Hydraulic Engineering Center River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) model was used to simulate water surfaces for the northern part of the Trinity River in Dallas, using reservoir surcharge releases and topographic data provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A measure of fit assessment is performed on the MOP flood maps with the HEC-RAS simulated flood inundation output to quantify spatial differences. Estimating possible flood inundation using individual datasets that vary spatially and temporally allow to gain an understanding of how much each observational dataset contributes to the overall water estimation. Results show that water surfaces estimated by MOP are comparable with the simulated output for the duration of the flood event. Additionally, contributed data, such as Civil Air Patrol, although they may be geographically sparse, become an important data source when fused with other observation data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Power generation using small wind turbines connected to AC grids has been gaining attention and contributions in recent years. As small wind turbines are connected to remote areas as support energy systems, there are not extensive contributions connecting those small turbines to AC grids. This paper presents the integration of a small wind generation system which is AC-grid-connected. The system is composed of a 160 W commercial small wind turbine with a permanent magnet synchronous generator and a 140 W Texas Instruments (Dallas, TX, USA) development kit devoted to connecting photovoltaic panels to AC grids. Several experimental tests were developed to characterize the devices, e.g., to obtain the power–current curves of the synchronous generator. Moreover, a mathematical model of the flyback converter is developed in detail in order to design a new converter controller. All the control capacity of the development kit is used to extract the maximum power of the synchronous generator, to reject the oscillation produced by the inverter and to connect the system to the AC grid. Transportation has been identified as one of the major barriers to successful reentry for prisoners released to community in the United States. We foregrounded transportation and mobility in our design consistent with the new mobilities paradigm and investigated the mobility needs of returning citizens from the perspective of service providers and employers in Dallas, Texas. We interviewed 17 participants who directly served returning citizens in their professional roles as part of a conventional content analytic design that focused specifically on transportation and mobility among their clients. The findings include five primary themes: 1) Returning citizens rely primarily on public transit; 2) Access to cars is rare, complicated, but advantageous; 3) Support lays a road to successful reentry; 4) Transportation is critical for successful reentry, and; 5) Returning citizens face a complex network of obligations. We utilized mobilities literature and assemblage thinking to interpret our findings as an expansion of the carceral mobilities literature both conceptually and geo-spatially as a reentry mobility assemblage. The COVID-19 pandemic forced many educators and students around the world to shift abruptly from a face-to-face environment to an online learning management system (LMS). This change of environment proved especially difficult for English language learners (ELLs) in the United States. Some of the challenges for ELLs include technology issues, lack of facility with the LMS, limited comprehension of written instructions, time management difficulties, social isolation, and low motivation. This paper discusses those challenges and examines the benefits and shortcomings of using an LMS for lessons, assessments, and communication among ELLs. This qualitative study investigates the experiences of ELL students enrolled in a Dallas, Texas area high school during the COVID-19 pandemic and their attitudes towards completing coursework through an LMS platform. In this paper, the authors present their efforts in exploring a new type of traffic data, referred to as internet-connected vehicle (ICV) data, for traffic congestion management and operational planning. Most currently manufactured vehicles contain onboard GPS and cellular modules, and they constantly connect to automobile manufacturers' clouds via cellular networks and upload their status. Some automobile manufacturers have recently redistributed the nonpersonal part of such data, such as geolocation, to third-party organizations for innovative applications. Compared with the traditional vehicle GPS data, the ICV data contain high-resolution GPS waypoints accompanied with the vehicles' abnormal moving events (e.g., hard braking). The ICV data also have huge potential in congestion management and operational planning. They explore to identify and analyze traffic congestion on both freeways and arterials using the ICV data. The ICV data adopted for this research are redistributed by Wejo Data Service, representing 10%–15% of all moving vehicles in the Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) area in Texas. Through one case study for a freeway segment and one for an arterial segment, new traffic performance metrics based on the characteristics of ICV data have been presented. The highlights of these efforts are as follows: (I) queue length and propagation at freeway bottlenecks can be directly measured based on where and when most internet-connected vehicles slow down and join the queue; (II) an internet-connected vehicle's actual delay time on arterials can be directly measured according to its slow movement percentage, without assuming the nondelay travel speed; and (III) the ICV data set are also combined with the high-resolution traffic signal events to generate a ground-truth time-space diagram (TSD) on arterials—a common visualization of arterial signal performance for transportation planning and operations. Infrasound data contain contributions from incoherent noise, coherent noise and signals of interest. The design of an infrasound array to target sources of interest requires a quantification of array response, individual sensor response, propagation effects (topography and meteorological conditions), signal spectrum and the noise environment. The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty community has spent significant effort in quantifying the acoustic field in rural environments for frequencies up to 7 Hz. Given that the nuclear monitoring and tactical infrasound community have growing interests in monitoring sources in or near populated regions, there is an emergent need to measure and understand acoustic fields in these environments as well. This paper focuses on quantification of the acoustic field in three different urban environments: (1) arrays installed within Dallas, TX, a metropolitan area, (2) an array installed at the rural–suburban interface near San Diego, CA and (3) an array installed in Vicksburg, MS, a small city with multiple major transportation corridors. A minimum of five months of data was recorded and used for each site characterization. The analysis focuses on frequencies from 0.1 to 45 Hz. The quantification of the data from these three sites is accomplished with statistical noise models that capture the total ambient acoustic field, separation of the coherent portion of the field and trend analysis to link temporal and seasonal variations to wind speed and anthropogenic activities. The resulting physical interpretation of the data demonstrates that the total acoustic field in urban regions is overall higher and inversely related to the number of coherent detections observed by an array. Machine learning (ML) is being used regularly in many different fields. This paper compares traditional econometric methods that have better explanations of data analysis to ML methods, focusing on predicting, understanding and unpacking ML methods which have higher prediction accuracies of four key transport‐planning variables: household vehicle‐miles traveled (continuous variable), household vehicle ownership (count variable), mode choice (categorical variable), and land use change (categorical variable with strong spatial interactions). Here, the results of ten ML methods are compared to methods of ordinary least squares (OLS), multinomial logit (MNL), negative binomial and spatial auto‐regressive (SAR). The U.S.'s 2017 National Household Travel Survey and land use data sets from the Dallas‐Ft. Worth region of Texas are used. Results suggest traditional econometric methods work pretty well on the more continuous responses (VMT and vehicle ownership), but the random forest (RF), gradient boosting decision trees (GBDT), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) methods delivered the best results, though the RF model required 30 to almost 60 times more computing time than XGBoost and GBDT methods. The RF, GBDT, XGBoost, light gradient boosting method (lightGBM), and catboost offer better results than other methods for the two "classification" cases, with lightGBM being the most time‐efficient. Dallas-Fort Worth, the fastest growing region in Texas, has been criticized for decades for auto-centric and corporate development, which has restricted the sustainable design of cultural venues in need of permeable access to the community. Meanwhile, the city’s arts districts – Bishop Arts District and Deep Ellum, officially designated as Cultural Districts in the Dallas Cultural Plan – are known for their clusters of murals, live music venues, and independent businesses, which exemplify the transformation of the forgotten historic streetcar corridors into bohemian cultural destinations. This paper examines the revitalization of Deep Ellum and the Bishop Arts District that have both become successful local destinations with walkable commercial streets. First, we review the literature on cultural placemaking in a post-industrial urban context. Next, using US Census data, we explore the socio-demographic environment of the two neighbourhoods. Then, synthesizing a Geographic Information System (GIS) data set and Google Street imagery, we analyse storefronts that have been modified for cultural use. Urban development of cultural districts shows that reusing storefronts can and should be contextually adapted to the existing built landscape and socio-cultural environment to satisfy both communities’ needs and to enhance local economic growth. In view of cultural placemaking, the city should develop a policy that increases pedestrian and transit access to cultural districts, affordable housing, and spaces for artists and residents, and spurs innovative, often post-retail, cultural storefront repurposing through community engagement in order to build incremental, long-term resilience. Dallas and Houston are merely 90 minutes apart and a significant number of people commute between the two cities in heavy traffic. With a goal to reducing the travel time and allowing commuters to begin their day with a review of what will come when they arrive at work, Texas Central Partners, LLC proposed the development of a high-speed rail between the cities. We propose a macrofinance model that rationalizes robust features in equity index option markets. When rare disasters are followed by economic recoveries, the slope of the implied volatility term structure is positive in good times but turns negative in bad times. Additionally, implied volatility decreases with moneyness in bad times (volatility skew), whereas the shape becomes a smile in good times in the presence of rare economic booms. Our theory contributes to understanding the dynamics of the implied volatility surface yet keeping standard asset-pricing moments realistic. This paper was accepted by Gustavo Manso, finance. Summary: With the grid's evolution, the end‐users demand becomes more vital for demand side management (DSM). Accurate load forecasting (LF) is critical for power system planning and using advanced demand response (DR) strategies. To design efficient and precise LF, information about various factors that influence end‐users demand is required. In this paper, the impact of different factors on electrical demand and capacity of climatic factors existence and their variation is discussed and analysed. The Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) is utilized to express the degree of electric demand correlation with metrological and calendar factors. Then, the optimal‐Bayesian regularization algorithm (BRA) based on ANN for LF is presented. The effect of the number of neurons in hidden layers on output is observed to select the most appropriate option. Additionally, heating degree days (HDDs) and cooling degree days (CDDs) indices are investigated to consider the impact of air conditioners' (ACs) loads in different seasons. Case studies on data from Dallas, Texas, USA, are used to demonstrate the influence of various factors on electrical demand. The proposed algorithm's effectiveness for LF and error formulations shows that optimal‐BRA‐enabled LF presents better accuracy than state‐of‐the‐art approaches. Thus, the proposed electric demand prediction strategy could help the system operator know DR potential at different times better, leading to optimal system resources dispatching through DR actions. Are we contributing positively to the society at large by research that we conduct in the field of Operations Management? Currently, the answer is probably closer to "no" than to "yes." We often do not realize it, but there is very real cost of conducting our research nonresponsibly. In this invited OM Forum contribution, which is based on my Manufacturing and Service Operations Management Distinguished Fellow lecture given at the University of Texas at Dallas in 2018, I discuss what I believe it means to conduct research responsibly, I offer some specific steps to improve the relevance of what we do, and I argue that this approach gives our field a new opportunity to make broader impact by expanding the horizon of our work. Neglecting the velocity reduction in the induction zone of wind turbines can lead to overestimates of power production predictions, and, thus, of the annual energy production for a wind farm. An experimental study on the induction zone associated with wind turbine operations is performed in the boundary‐layer test section of the BLAST wind tunnel at UT Dallas using stereo particle image velocimetry. This experiment provides a detailed quantification of the wind speed decrease associated with the induction zone for two different incoming flows, namely, uniform flow and boundary layer flow. Operations of wind turbines in different regions of the power curve are modeled in the wind tunnel environment with two porous disks with a solidity of 50.4% and 32.3%, which correspond to thrust coefficients of 0.71 and 0.63, respectively. The porous disks are designed to approximate the wake velocity profiles previously measured for utility‐scale wind turbines through scanning wind LiDARs. The results show that the streamwise velocity at one rotor diameter upwind of both disks decreases 1% more for the boundary layer flow than for the uniform flow. Further, the effect of shear in front of the disk with a higher thrust coefficient can be observed until 1.75 rotor diameter upwind of the disk, whereas for the disk with a lower thrust coefficient, the effect of shear becomes negligible at 1.25 rotor diameter upwind. It is found that at one rotor diameter upwind, for both incoming flows, the disk having a higher thrust coefficient has 2% more velocity reduction than the lower‐thrust‐coefficient disk. The results suggest that the variability in wind shear and rotor thrust coefficient, which is encountered during typical operations of wind turbines, should be considered for the development of improved models for predictions of the rotor induction zone, the respective cumulative effects in the presence of multiple turbines, namely, wind farm blockage, and more accurate predictions of wind farm power capture. Magnum Hunter Resources Corporation (MHRC) was an oil and gas company headquartered near Dallas, TX. Although the company grew rapidly through acquisitions, the accounting department did not keep pace with the company's growing size and sophistication. Management identified this as an internal control deficiency (ICD) prior to issuing the 2011 financial statements but did not disclose it because management underestimated its severity. The company later disclosed multiple material weaknesses when it restated its financial statements. This case study is designed for use in the undergraduate or graduate audit classroom to examine the classification and disclosure requirements for ICDs. After completing this case study, students will be able to apply professional standards to classify ICDs; critique the decision-making process of management, consultants, and auditors tasked with evaluating ICDs; and consider the impact of material weakness disclosure on investors. A major concern in the ongoing debate over school choice is whether private schools help to increase their students' levels of tolerance necessary for a functioning democracy in the United States. Over 40 years ago, scholars at the University of Minnesota created a survey which measured political knowledge, political tolerance, perceived threats from opposing groups, and support for democratic norms anchored in each respondent's view of the political group they find most distasteful. In 1997, researchers at various universities used a similar survey instrument to derive responses from students in eighth-grade social studies classes who were enrolled in seven public and twenty-four private schools in New York City and Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. Those original data remained archived and unexamined for decades. We analyze those data using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) and rigorous Nearest Neighbor Matching (NNM) methods based on propensity scores. We find that students who attended private schools demonstrate higher levels of political knowledge and stronger support for democratic norms when compared to observationally similar students who attended public schools. Conference like this in Dallas is a perfect occasion to give some reminiscences of my 40 years of work as a mathematician, and to muse a little about my mathematical past. It is a rare occasion to be a little sentimental. In this essay, I summarize and expand my birthday talk given at University of Texas at Dallas conference. There, I mostly covered the early years of my mathematical career ending with a detailed description about the smallest volume hyperbolic 3-manifold and the HOMFLYPT polynomial. Thus I seldom venture to the time after 1984 (for example to mention skein modules constructed in April 1987) and only occasionally after 1995 when I settled to work at George Washington University and have had several successful PhD students. The Air Quality Index (AQI), developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), has been providing the public with crucial information regarding the status of contamination of the atmosphere for the past 45 years. Prior to introduction of the AQI, only a handful of metropolitan areas reported on air quality, and each region decided on its own metric. The inception of a single AQI helped homogenize the air quality metrics across the nation and indeed served as an important future template for other governmental and regulatory agencies across the world. The formulators had the foresight to recognize that our understanding of air pollution and its effects may change over time, which are likely to change regulatory limits. They used a dynamic framework to define the AQI, such that the broad definition or principle does not need to change with every change in regulatory limits or policy, and the fundamental goal of alerting the public to deleterious air quality is not affected. The establishment of the AQI increased public awareness of the importance of clean air and has helped muster support for air quality and emission regulations. The National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) set forth by the USEPA provides acceptable levels of criteria pollutants – namely carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, particulate matter, and sulfur dioxide. A comparison of the actual levels, as compared to the regulatory limits (since the cessation of leaded gasoline, lead is no longer included in the index), are used as the basis for the AQI. As the regulatory limits change, so does the exact evaluation of the AQI, making it a living index. In this paper, we provide a historical overview of the Air Quality Index, the Federal Reference Methods (FRMs) vs. Federal Equivalent Methods (FEMs) for measuring them, and as an illustrative example, we discuss the air quality for Dallas-Ft. Worth, currently the fourth most populous metropolitan region in the United States, vis-a-vis the reported AQI. The green-belly stink bug (Diceraeus melacanthus Dallas (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae)) is a key pest of corn-soybean crop systems and the management of this pest is difficult due to behavioral characteristics. However, products that alter its behavior, such as arrestants, dislodgers, and phagostimulants, have been used in an attempt to improve the effectiveness of chemical control. In this study, the effect of these products on the walking behavior of nymphs and adults of D. melacanthus was initially evaluated through computational behavioral tracking (Ethovision system). Adults of D. melacanthus exposed to the dislodgers Creolin Pearson and Quimifol S450 (sulfur) significantly increased the distance covered and the walking speed. On the other hand, the only treatment that significantly affected the walking behavior of nymphs was the treatment with soy milk (phagostimulant). The physical–chemical analyses indicated considerable changes in the pH and electrical conductivity of mixtures of such products with insecticides from different chemical groups, as well as lack of homogeneity (physical incompatibility). Nevertheless, none of the products tested improved the control efficacy of an insecticide based on imidacloprid + beta-cyfluthrin, either in laboratory tests (contact bioassay) or in tests conducted in corn crops during 2 crop harvests. Thus, the association of these products in a tank mixture does not increase the control levels of D. melacanthus in post-emergence of maize and may have an antagonistic effect in some associations. Forecast sensitivity to observation (FSO) methods have become increasingly popular over the past two decades, providing the ability to quantify the impacts of various observing systems on forecasts without having to conduct costly data denial experiments. While adjoint- and ensemble-based FSO are employed in many global operational systems, their use for regional convection-allowing data assimilation (DA) and forecast systems have not been fully examined. In this study, ensemble FSO (EFSO) is explored for high-frequency convective-scale DA for a severe weather case study over the Dallas–Fort Worth testbed. This testbed, originally established by the Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) project, aims to improve high-resolution DA systems by assimilating a variety of existing state and regional mesoscale observing systems to fill gaps of conventional observing networks. This study utilizes EFSO to estimate relative impacts of nonconventional surface observations against conventional observations, and further incorporates assimilated radar observations into EFSO. Results show that, when applying advected localization and a neighborhood upscale averaging technique, EFSO estimates remain correlated and skillful with the actual error reduction of all assimilated observations for the duration of 2-h forecasts. The ability for EFSO to verify against other metrics (surface T, u, υ, q) beside energy norms is also demonstrated, emphasizing that EFSO can be used to evaluate impacts of specific parts of the forecast system rather than integrated quantities. Partitioned EFSO revealed that while conventional and radar observations contributed to most of the total energy, nonconventional observations contributed a significant percentage (up to 25%) of the total impact to surface thermodynamic fields. Background: In the United States, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death and disability in women. CVD-modifiable risk factors, including poor diet quality and inadequate physical activity, can be addressed through evidence-based interventions (EBIs). Strong Hearts Healthy Communities (SHHC) is an EBI that has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing CVD risk and improving health outcomes among rural white women. The aims of this study were to understand the general health, diet, and physical activity-related needs and goals of women living in an urban community, to inform the tailoring and adaptation of the SHHC EBI to an urban setting and more diverse population. Methods: Focus groups (FGs) were conducted with African American/Black and Hispanic/Latinx women in the Dallas metropolitan area who had a BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and engaged in ≤ 150 min per week of moderate physical activity. The data were coded using a team-based, deductive, and thematic analysis approach, that included multiple coders and in-depth discussions. Results: Four FGs with a total of 18 participants (79% Black and 21% Latinx) were conducted, and three themes were developed: (1) participants had adequate knowledge and positive attitudes towards healthy living but faced many barriers to practicing healthy behaviors; (2) culturally-based beliefs and community practices exerted a strong influence on behaviors related to food and stress, revealing barriers to healthy eating and generational differences in stress and stress management; (3) participants desired a more individualized approach to nutrition and physical activity interventions that included familiar and enjoyable activities and social support centered around shared health goals. Conclusions: The SHHC intervention and similar health programs for Black/African American and Hispanic/Latinx women in urban settings should emphasize individualized nutrition and practical skills for healthy eating with accessible, familiar, and enjoyable exercises. Additionally, stress management strategies should be culturally and generationally sensitive and social support, whether through family, friends, or other program participants, should be based on shared health goals. To investigate the physiological response and uptake characteristics of three genotypes of Dianthus caryophyllus to Cr stress, we used a heavy metal-contaminated soil sample from a lead-zinc mine in a pot trial to determine several parameters, including plant height, stem thickness, root architecture, biomass, heavy metal accumulation and transport capacity under different levels of Cr contamination. We discovered a dosage effect in the influence of the heavy metal Cr on the growth of Dianthus caryophyllus. Under low-dose conditions, it elicited a protective response favoring plant growth, whereas under high accumulation conditions, it inhibited plant growth. Additionally, chromium stress increased the growth of plant roots. In the range of chromium concentrations between 0-100 mg/kg, the enrichment and transit coefficient of the three species, namely Freedom, Master, and Dallas decrease as the concentration of chromium increases. The enrichment coefficient follows the order Freedom > Dallas > Master, whereas the transit coefficient follows the order Master > Freedom > Dallas. All three genotypes of Dianthus caryophyllus exhibited tolerance, accumulation, and transport capacities when subjected to chromium stress. Public administration scholars, and those in other fields such as business management and social psychology, have long been interested in the effects of workforce diversity on performance. Results thus far are decidedly mixed, in large part because different research traditions operate at different levels of organization and test different performance measures. Drawing from the broader literature on diversity outside public administration, we focus specifically on work team, as the unit of analysis, in this article. We argue that intragroup conflict on a diverse team is potentially beneficial when lower levels of trust and cohesion among group members reduce counterproductive work behavior and thus improve performance. We test this assertation in an analysis of police use of force on citizens in Dallas, TX, between 2013 and 2020. Findings show that demographically diverse teams reduce the use of force against citizens. The largest effects are found in response groups that include variation on both race/ethnicity and gender. Neighborhood infrastructure, such as sidewalks, medical facilities, public transit, community gathering places, and tree canopy, provides essential support for safe, healthy, and resilient communities. This paper examines the presence and condition of neighborhood infrastructure and shows that "infrastructure deserts" exist, which are low-income neighborhoods with significantly more deficient infrastructure. A generalized data-driven framework is developed and implemented at the street-level for 12 types of neighborhood infrastructure in Dallas, Texas. The results show significant infrastructure inequities across income levels for most types of infrastructure. Statistical inference predicts (with 95 % confidence) that low-income neighborhoods are 2.0 to 3.5 times more likely to have highly deficient infrastructure (8 or more deficient infrastructure types) than high-income areas and 1.4 to 2.4 times more likely to have highly deficient infrastructure than middle-income neighborhoods. Extreme precipitation has become more frequent and intense with time and space. Infrastructure design tools such as Intensity-Duration-Frequency (IDF) curves still rely on historical precipitation and stationary assumptions, risking current and future urban infrastructure. This study developed IDF curves by incorporating non-stationarity trends in precipitation annual maximum series (AMS) for Dallas–Fort Worth, the fourth-largest metropolitan region in the United States. A Pro-NEVA tool was used to develop non-stationary IDF curves, taking historical precipitation AMS for seven stations that showed a non-stationary trend with time as a covariate. Four statistical indices—the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC), Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE)—were used as the model goodness of fit evaluation. The lower AIC, BIC, and RMSE values and higher NSE values for non-stationary models indicated a better performance compared to the stationary models. Compared to the traditional stationary assumption, the non-stationary IDF curves showed an increase (up to 75%) in the 24 h precipitation intensity for the 100-year return period. Using the climate change adaptive non-stationary IDF tool for the DFW metroplex and similar urban regions could enable decision makers to make climate-informed choices about infrastructure investments, emergency preparedness measures, and long-term urban development and water resource management planning. Background: Food pantry clients have high rates of food insecurity and greater risk for and prevalence of diet-related diseases. Many clients face time, resource, and physical constraints that limit their ability to prepare healthy meals using foods typically provided by pantries. We compared two novel approaches to alleviate those barriers and encourage healthier eating: meal kits, which bundle ingredients with a recipe on how to prepare a healthy meal, and nutritious no-prep meals, which can be eaten after thawing or microwaving. Methods: Participants were adult pantry clients from a large food pantry in the Southern sector of Dallas, Texas. We conducted a repeated measures between-subjects study with 70 clients randomized to receive 14-days of meal kits (n = 35) or no-prep meals (n = 35). Participants completed questionnaires at baseline and two-week follow-up on demographics, hedonic liking of study meals, perceived dietary quality, and food security. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance was used to examine group and time effects, and group by time interactions. We also describe feasibility and satisfaction outcomes to inform future implementation. Results: Sixty-six participants completed the study (94%). Participants were predominantly Hispanic or Latino(a) (63%) and African American or Black (31%) women (90%). There was a significant interaction on hedonic liking of study meals (ηp²=0.16, F(1,64) = 11.78, p <.001), such that participants that received meal kits had greater improvements in hedonic liking over time than participants in the no-prep group. We observed significant improvements in perceived dietary quality (ηp²=0.36, F(1,64) = 36.38, p <.001) and food security (ηp²=0.36, F(1,64) = 36.38, p <.001) across both groups over time, but no between group differences or significant interactions indicating one intervention was more effective than the other. Program satisfaction was high across both groups, but higher among the meal kit group (ηp²=0.09, F(1,64) = 6.28, p =.015). Conclusions: Results suggest nutritious meal kits and no-prep meals may be desirable nutrition intervention strategies for pantry clients and have potential to increase food security and perceived dietary quality in the short-term. Our findings are limited by a small sample and short follow-up. Future studies should continue to test both interventions, and include longer follow-up, objective measures of dietary quality, and relevant clinical outcomes. To enhance the effectiveness of dockless shared micromobility vehicle services, address challenges created by these services, and achieve better implementation performance, cities need efficacious strategies to tackle two major challenges: parking demand and infrastructure improvements. This paper offers two techniques for analyzing areas of high parking demand and roadway segments of high micromobility vehicle demand. The proposed processes support efforts to assign free-floating parking and reduce vehicle clutter across cities, and assist transportation planners in identifying locations for road infrastructure improvement and ordinance enforcement. An unsupervised learning approach using vendor launching site analysis is used to appropriately locate dockless vehicle parking zones. Furthermore, this paper compares three methods for identifying high-demand corridors. Two shortest path models are generated to predict trip paths for trip data without trajectories, considering rider route preferences and infrastructure types. A Simplified Matching Heuristic (SMH) that uses trip data with trajectories, is developed herein to match trip trajectory data to the network street links. These analytical processes are applied in a case study of Dallas, TX. Results show that methods using shortest path models may poorly predict the actual path taken by e-scooter users. Drawing on notions of the symbolic economy and urban imaginary as an inherent dimension of the neoliberal public sphere, this paper examines historicized city plans and their visions, and develops a framework for understanding the role of city plans in shaping urban imaginaries and branded spaces. The paper claims that future city visions, fundamental to plan-making, help legitimize the power elites' growth agendas and ambitions to invest in both symbolic and material flagship place-making projects heavily bolstered and publicized by the media. The study examines this claim in the American context, selecting Dallas, Texas as a unique entrepreneurial city overly concerned with its public image characterized by a long-standing legacy of place promotion and plan-making. Using archival research and semi-structured interviews with key informants, this paper finds that city plans' visions, subservient to the civic elites' cultural tastes, have been instrumental in rallying public support to materialize place-making projects in accord with the city's larger preoccupation with "world-class" status showcased and widely promoted by media outlets. This paper proposes a novel analytical framework that integrates spatial statistics and machine learning techniques to identify relationships between e-commerce and distribution facilities. The framework includes centrographic analysis, global and local spatial association measurements, and a recently popularized interpretable machine learning approach – gradient boosting decision trees (GBDT) – to analyze warehousing location choices. We apply this framework to ZIP Codes Business Patterns data from 2003 to 2016 in three large metropolitan areas in Texas, US (i.e., Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, and Houston). The thematic maps reveal the spatial clustering of areas with higher e-commerce activity but lower logistics facility coverage. It is worth noting that we do not observe logistics sprawl in the study region. The GBDT results show that industrial activities and transportation network accessibility are key factors influencing warehousing location choices. We also find that the relationship between warehouses and e-commerce establishments is weaker in Houston, a major maritime gateway for goods entering and leaving, as compared to Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin. This article investigates the relationship between neoliberal multiculturalism and gentrification using a case study of the forthcoming Dallas International District. Informed by a conceptual framework considering neoliberal urbanism, the (aspiring) global city, and racial–ethnic identity, this article attempts to reveal the dominant discourses that lay the foundation for gentrification in the Dallas International District, an urban renewal project planned to be built atop a former freedmen's town. Rather than investigating gentrification after it has taken root in a specific location, this work investigates the discursive foundations of gentrification before it takes hold. This is accomplished through a discourse analysis of interviews with Dallas public officials, developers, and community members, as well as web sources. On the basis of these data, it is concluded that plans to redevelop the area foreshadow the gentrification of an existing Black and Latino population and that this planned gentrification is permeated by neoliberal discourses about multiculturalism that are entrenched in Dallas' desires to transform itself into a global, world-class city. Hemoglobinopathies are the most common single-gene disorders in humans. There are 1,424 variants of human hemoglobin described with 951 involving the β-globin gene. Ancestry and geography play a significant role in the incidence and nature of hemoglobinopathies, with African, Asian, and Mediterranean populations and their descendants being amongst the most affected. Investigation of variants in individuals of Hispanic descent is needed to reflect the changing demographics of the United States. Hemoglobin β-globin evaluation through gel electrophoresis, high-performance liquid chromatography, and HBB gene sequencing was performed on patients from Texas hospitals between 2010 and 2015 and demographic parameters (age, sex, ethnicity) was subsequently analyzed. A total of 846 patients underwent hemoglobinopathy evaluation. A β chain variant was detected in 628 of the 846 total patients. Hispanic patients represented 37% (314/846 patients), which were equally distributed between females (50%; 156/314) and males (50%; 156/314). A β-globin chain variant was found in 67% of Hispanic patients with a distribution across 10 variants seen in greater than 1% of patients. For hemoglobin variants, an understanding of the regional and ethnic prevalence will improve patient care through more effective screening and identification of the variant, early diagnosis, and appropriate treatment if necessary, and better genetic counseling. Objectives: Understanding if police malfeasance might be "contagious" is vital to identifying efficacious paths to police reform. Accordingly, we investigate whether an officer's propensity to engage in misconduct is associated with her direct, routine interaction with colleagues who have themselves engaged in misbehavior in the past. Methods: Recognizing the importance of analyzing the actual social networks spanning a police force, we use data on collaborative responses to 1,165,136 "911" calls for service by 3475 Dallas Police Department (DPD) officers across 2013 and 2014 to construct daily networks of front-line interaction. And we relate these cooperative networks to reported and formally sanctioned misconduct on the part of the DPD officers during the same time period using repeated-events survival models. Results: Estimates indicate that the risk of a DPD officer engaging in misconduct is not associated with the disciplined misbehavior of her ad hoc, on-the-scene partners. Rather, a greater risk of misconduct is associated with past misbehavior, officer-specific proneness, the neighborhood context of patrol, and, in some cases, officer race, while departmental tenure is a mitigating factor. Conclusions: Our observational findings—based on data from one large police department in the United States—ultimately suggest that actor-based and ecological explanations of police deviance should not be summarily dismissed in favor of accounts emphasizing negative socialization, where our study design also raises the possibility that results are partly driven by unobserved trait-based variation in the situations that officers find themselves in. All in all, interventions focused on individual officers, including the termination of deviant police, may be fruitful for curtailing police misconduct—where early interventions focused on new offenders may be key to avoiding the escalation of deviance. In this study, we develop a method that assigns acoustic signals with Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) data to build a labeled dataset of acoustic signals from aircraft without expensive ground-truth experiments. An exploration of the resultant labeled dataset enables an assessment of the acoustic characteristics from three types of aircraft. The fusion framework is evaluated using data from an acoustic sensor and collocated ADS-B receiver in the middle of a large urban area at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Our results demonstrate the benefit of combining multiple types of data to generate a labeled dataset leveraging open-source aircraft surveillance data. By studying three classes of aircraft, we find that the smaller fixed wing single engine (FWSE) class is mostly detected within approximately 5000 m, while the larger fixed wing multi-engine (FWME) class is commonly detected out to greater distances above 7500 m. The FWSE class has a median source frequency at 100 Hz, compared to FWME class with median source frequency at 80 Hz, while rotorcraft has a source frequency falling into a lower range of 30–100 Hz. The article discusses the Citizen Rhetor Project, a curriculum developed by teachers at a private school in Dallas, Texas, to enhance students' capacity to participate in difficult conversations. The project focuses on cultivating students' voice and empathy by engaging them in the American public conversation about social justice issues and empowering them to speak up and advocate for others.
