This article uses fieldnotes along with student and practitioner feedback to recount the challenges, benefits, and broader learnings of engaging master's students in a participatory research seminar. The students developed research proposals about a real-world socioeconomic challenge with and for local practitioners. Proposals were consistent with the principles and practices of participatory action research (PAR). The planning, implementation, and assessment of this course was informed by feminist scientific philosophies of collaboration, situatedness, partiality, accountability, and a sensitivity to power dynamics. In line with both PAR and SoTL principles, there was an explicit emphasis on partnership, reflexivity, and broad forms of learning in both the classroom and practitioner meetings. The students were challenged by the unfamiliarity of the research approach, the need to navigate a new way of working directly with stakeholders, as well as the responsibility to the community that participatory approaches espouse. Despite the challenges, the students were eager to soak up local knowledges, reflect on their role as researchers, and contribute constructively if they could.

This paper discusses the conception of a joint intercultural students' research program of one German and two Kyrgyzstani teachers and students from the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg (Germany) and the American University of Central Asia (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan). The paper conceptualizes such a research training program and gives reference to qualitative methods teaching in the two corresponding universities. What follows is a description of the chosen research topic: "The 'Intersections' of Gender, Family, and Society in Kyrgyzstan" and the course program. With different academic cultures concerning research ethics in the Anglo-Saxon and continental European contexts, a challenge for such a program will be addressed. A short review of the research results of the different students' teams is provided, and the paper is finalized with a self-reflection upon such a joint intercultural undertaking.

How can the individual preserve his identity within a crowd? How can he/she counter the threats and the temptations of the mass phenomenon? In the following, these questions are answered, correctly based on two contrasting and complementary situations and approaches: on the one hand, the beginnings of the Soviet Union in the 1920s as manifested in everyday life in Moscow (journalistic-systemic view). On the other hand, on biographies of NSDAP members in Germany in the 1920s (biographical approach). The theoretical background provides philosophical treatises from this period (Elias Canetti, José Ortega y Gasset, and Karl Jaspers). Because the situations characterize starting points of totalitarian system (Sowjet-Union/Nazi-Regime), they allow transformations into current and future experiences of collective and group pressure in private and business life, where people experience similar challenges and temptations that are more elementary.

The article examines the introduction of quantitative perspectives from the sociology of immigration into administrative departments for immigrant integration in Germany. Using Andrew Abbott's concept of professional jurisdictions within competitive ecologies, the article shows how statistical indicators enabled administrators to consolidate a lasting responsibility for the problem of immigrant integration within public administrations. In investigating administrative departments on the municipal and state level in Germany, the article highlights five crucial functions of integration statistics: They stylise integration as a problem amenable to bureaucratic intervention; they construct integration as an enduring problem that warrants the attention of a permanent agency; they offer persuasive force in securing a departmental budget; they durably redraw jurisdictional boundaries by creating a new client out of problems previously processed elsewhere; and they help monopolise a definition of integration realities among competing understandings of integration problems. The article thus extends recent research on the science-policy nexus in the field of immigration by highlighting the as yet neglected role socialscientific indicators play in securing a lasting jurisdiction for bureaucratic work in a competitive political environment. Residents of care homes across the globe are affected by the spread of SARS-CoV-2 as they have been identified as a high-risk group and because they experienced strict social isolation regulations during the first wave of the pandemic. Social isolation of older people with poor physical and mental health is strongly associated with mental health problems and decreased life expectancy. Other research has shown that older people managed to adapt to the changes brought about by the pandemic and have linked this to the concept of resilience. The aim of this research project was to investigate how this applied to residents in care home settings during the first phases of the contact ban in Germany from sociology, developmental psychology and environmental gerontology perspectives, and to gain in-depth understanding of residents' experiences. This paper draws on structured interview data collected from residents in two care homes during early June 2020 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. The findings show that their experiences were shaped by three factors: care home settings and the approach of staff to handling the contact ban; biographical sense of resilience; and a hierarchy of life issues. The findings highlight the importance of locally specific response mechanisms in care homes, agency and belonging of residents despite health-related limitations and the importance of a critical (gendered) lens on understanding their experiences. W. Sombart’s attitude to the First World War is characterized in the literature as extremely nationalistic. It made a radical revolution in his perception of the processes in world civilization. He saw in a new light the main conflict of the era — the conflict of national worldviews, and with it the purpose and meaning of the world historical mission of the German people. The war is a phenomenon that has a stressful impact on its participants, transforms feelings and mindsets, ordering the supreme authority of blood, soil, roots, and intellectuals are extremely sensitive to such orders. However, nationalism, even in minimal doses introduced into speech and writing, takes the spoken words and texts beyond the limits of scholarship, turning them into propaganda statements. So the 1915 book «Traders and Heroes. Reflections of a Patriot» belongs to the propaganda genre, which is an apology for the war. In it, the most famous economist and sociologist of his time justifies the war on the part of Germany by the fact that the development of economy, culture, communication, caused and promoted by market capitalism, turns into consequences that destroy the very foundations of human existence. Mainly — the growth of selfish individualism, the desire for comfort and the fullest possible realization of everyday needs and pleasures. According to the author, the war of German «heroes» against the «traders» personified by the British will turn the human race to recognize the paramount importance of high ideals of spiritual culture. Th is a priori introduced initial distinction is clarified by a set of dichotomous oppositions: «us — them», «high — low», «sacred — profane», «good — evil», «general — individual». Talking from a radically nationalist perspective turns the apologetics of culture into the apologetics of war. As a result, war is one of those rather rare events that are mythologized and mystified in the most radical way. In W. Sombart’s descriptions, the undeniable, as he is convinced, spiritual significance of war obscures and marginalizes the pain, suffering, loss and destruction that accompany it. The attitude of German sociologists to the First World War, which today is unconditionally included in the classical tradition, was not unambiguous. All of them shared the convictions set forth in the open letter of 93 German scientists, philosophers, historians, art critics «Toward a Cultural World», which justified Germany’s participation in the war. But the modality of sociologists’ patriotism varied within fairly wide limits. The extreme nationalist position was occupied and expressed by W. Sombart. M. Weber considered it necessary to find rational and realistic conditions for a truce acceptable to all participants in the conflict. G. Simmel adhered to the most moderate opinions, in his lectures and articles promoting Eurocentrism from the point of view of the vital interests of Germany. R. Michels, who lived and worked in Italy before and during the war, did not hide his anti-German views and sentiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An increasing number of municipalities are striving for energy autonomy. This study determines in which municipalities and at what additional cost energy autonomy is feasible for a case study of Germany. An existing municipal energy system optimization model is extended to include the industrial, commercial and personal transport sectors. Multiple regression methods are benchmarked in order to identify the model best suited for the transfer of individual optimization results to a large proportion of German municipalities. The resulting levelized cost of energy (LCOE) from the optimization of representative case study municipalities are transferred using energy-relevant indicators. The study demonstrates that energy autonomy is technically feasible in 6,314 (56%) municipalities. Thereby, the LCOEs increase in the autonomous case on average by 0.41 €/kWh compared to the minimum cost scenario. Apart from energy demand, base-load-capable bioenergy and deep geothermal energy have the greatest influence on the LCOEs. Overall, it appears that municipal energy autonomy is not economically viable under current framework conditions. This study represents a starting point for defining possible scenarios in studies of future national energy system or transmission grid expansion planning, which for the first time consider completely energy autonomous municipalities. In the context of health promotion in terms of the Ottawa Charter, a series of tasks and functions are attributed to schools, including the reduction of health and social inequalities. However, important theoretical considerations and empirical findings from the sociology of education, which analyzes school as a hierarchizing, segregating, inequality-producing, and reproducing institution, hardly find place in the public health debate on school health promotion. In this discussion article, some positions on schools from the sociology of education and the normative framework for health promotion in schools are presented. Furthermore, the contradictions between the goals of health promotion and the current conditions in schools, are discussed. In conclusion, some conceptual considerations are introduced from a perspective that rethinks education from the health promotion point of view and connects with inclusion, democracy education, and human rights., (© 2022. Using data from organ transplant medicine in Germany, we propose a method for understanding the content of unwritten rules supportive of violations of written rules in light of the "German Organ Transplant Scandal". Grounded in the sociology of organizational crime, we reconstruct the cultural repertoires of medical professionals working with organ allocation when confronted with the applicable guidelines using collective mindset analysis. Four dimensions of cognitive and normative rules of interpretation were identified and discussed as a an occupational-professional form of deviance. Apart from not relying on data from the alleged perpetrators and still gazing at the latent structures of meaning behind misconduct, our approach offers a more general methodological framework for empirical studies of the unwritten rules at work in an organizational field where wrongdoing has been reported. • Personal motivations alone do not explain the German organ transplant scandal. • Unwritten rules are supportive of guidelines violations concerning patient waiting lists. • Collective Mindset Analysis is appropriate to identify such cognitive rules. • The medical organizational setting can harbor a professionally justified deviance. • Job-embedded assumptions associated with wrongdoings are reconstructed.
