The article presents works of Jonathan White, who tells intimate stories of Black Americans soldier and civilian, men and women, famous and obscure often who met Abraham Lincoln during the tumult of the Civil War. Topics include conversations often challenged Lincoln, leading him to embrace freedom and respect for all Americans as redemption of the war's agony; and Black Americans with towering American hero and as a valiant martyr to the cause of freedom and civil rights.
