Abstract

The data collected by the DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 set-up during two additional annual cycles have been analyzed, further investigating the long-standing model-independent annual modulation effect pointed out by DAMA deep underground at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the I.N.F.N. by using various different experimental configurations. Including the new results, the total exposure of DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 over 8 annual cycles is 1.53 t·yr and the evidence for a signal that meets all the requirements of the model-independent Dark Matter annual modulation signature is 11.8 σ C.L. in the energy region (1 - 6) keV. In the (2 - 6) keV energy interval, where data are also available from DAMA/NaI and DAMA/LIBRA-phase1, the achieved C.L. for the full exposure of 2.86 t·yr is 13.7 σ. No systematics or side reaction able to mimic this signature (i.e., to account for the whole measured modulation amplitude and to simultaneously satisfy all the requirements of the signature) has been found or suggested by anyone throughout some decades thus far. A preliminary result on the further lowering of the software energy threshold and perspectives are also mentioned.

Abstract

A long-term measurement was conducted to search for $\alpha$, double-$\alpha$ and double-$\beta$ decays with $\gamma$ quanta emission in naturally occurring osmium isotopes. This study took advantage of two ultra-low background HPGe detectors and one ultra-low background BEGe detector at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (LNGS) of the INFN. Over almost 5 years of data were taken using high-purity osmium samples of approximately 173 g. The half-life limits set for a decays of $^{184}$Os to the first $2^+$ 103.6 keV excited level of $^{180}$W ($T_{1/2} > 9.3 \times 10^{15}$ yr) and of $^{186}$Os to the first $2^+$ 100.1 keV of $^{182}$W ($T_{1/2} > 4.8 \times 10^{17}$ yr) exceed substantially the present theoretical predictions that are at level of $T_{1/2} \sim (0.6 - 3) \times 10^{15}$ yr for $^{184}$Os and $T_{1/2} \sim (0.3 - 2) \times 10^{17}$ yr for $^{186}$Os. New half-life limits on the 2EC and EC$\beta^+$ decay of $^{184}$Os to the ground and excited levels of $^{184}$W were set at level of $T_{1/2} > 10^{16} - 10^{17}$ yr; a lower limit on the $2\beta^-$ decay of $^{192}$Os to the $2^+$ 316.5 keV excited level of $^{192}$Pt was estimated as $T_{1/2} > 6.1 \times 10^{20}$ yr. The half-life limits for $2\alpha$ decay of $^{189}$Os and $^{192}$Os were set for the first time at level of $T_{1/2} > 10^{20}$ yr., Comment: 38 pages, 17 figures, 5 tables

Abstract

The long-standing model-independent annual modulation effect measured by DAMA deep underground at Gran Sasso Laboratory with different experimental configurations is summarized and perspectives will be highlighted. DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 set-up, $\simeq$ 250 kg highly radio-pure NaI(Tl) confirms the evidence of a signal that meets all the requirements of the model independent Dark Matter annual modulation signature at high C.L.; the full exposure is 2.86 ton $\times$ yr over 22 annual cycles. The experiment is currently collecting data in the DAMA/LIBRA-phase2 empowered configuration with an even lower software energy threshold. Abstract

Zinc tungstate (ZnWO$_4$) crystal scintillators are promising detection material for the experiments searching for double beta decay, dark matter, and investigating rare alpha decays. An extended R&D was performed to develop advanced quality ZnWO$_4$ crystal scintillators. The R&D programme included the selection of the initial materials, the variation of the compound stoichiometry, the application of single and double crystallization, and the annealing of the crystal boules. The optical transmittance of the produced boules was measured, and the luminescence under X-ray excitation in the temperature region from 85 K to room temperature was studied (thermally stimulated luminescence was measured till 350 K). The energy resolution and the relative scintillation pulse amplitude were measured with gamma-sources demonstrating high scintillation properties of the samples produced by single crystallization from deeply purified zinc and tungsten oxides, with stoichiometric composition, annealed in air atmosphere., Comment: 14 pages; 10 figures

Abstract

An experiment to study 2β decay processes in 106Cd using a 106CdWO4 crystal scintillator of mass 215.4 g enriched in 106Cd to 66% is ongoing in the DAMA/R&D setup at the LNGS of INFN (Italy). The events in the 106CdWO4 detector are recorded in (anti)coincidences with two large-volume CdWO4 scintillation counters. The design of the detector system, the calibration and background measurements, methods and results of data analysis to determine key detector characteristics are described. The experimental data are compared with Monte Carlo simulation results, and a background model is constructed. The radioactive contamination of the setup components is studied. The limit on the half-life for the 2νεβ+ decay in 106Cd was preliminarily estimated as lim T1/2 = 3.5×1021, which approaches the theoretical expectations for this process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The development of low-background anisotropic detectors can offer a unique way to study those Dark Matter (DM) candidate particles able to induce nuclear recoils through the directionality technique. Among the anisotropic scintillators, the ZnWO$_{4}$ has unique features and is an excellent candidate for the purposes. Both the light output and the scintillation pulse shape depend on the impinging direction of heavy particles with respect to the crystallographic axes and can supply two independent modes to study the directionality and discriminate $\gamma/\beta$ radiation. Measurements to study the anisotropic and scintillation performances of ZnWO$_4$ are reported.

20. Investigation on Rare Nuclear Processes in Hf Nuclides

Abstract

In this work, a review of recent studies concerning rare nuclear processes in Hf isotopes is presented. In particular, the investigations using HP-Ge spectrometry and Hf-based crystal scintillators are focused; the potentiality and the results of the “source = detector” approach are underlined. In addition, a short introduction concerning the impact of such kind of research in the context of astroparticle and nuclear physics is pointed out. In particular, the study of α decay and double beta decay of 174Hf, 176Hf, 177Hf, 178Hf, 179Hf, 180Hf isotopes either to the ground state or to the lower bounded levels have been discussed. The observation of α decay of 174Hf isotope to the ground state with a T1/2=7.0(1.2)×1016 y is reported and discussed. No decay was detected for α decay of 174Hf isotope at the first excited level of daughter and of 176Hf, 177Hf, 178Hf, 179Hf, 180Hf isotopes either to the ground state or to the lower bounded levels. The T1/2 lower limits for these decays are at the level of 1016–1020 y. Nevertheless, the T1/2 lower limits for the transitions of 176Hf→172Yb (0+→0+) and 177Hf→173Yb (7/2−→5/2−) are near to the theoretical predictions, giving hope to their observation in the near future. All the other experimental limits (∼1016–1020 y) are absolutely far from the theoretical expectations. The experiments investigating the 2ϵ and ϵβ+ processes in 174Hf are also reported; the obtained half-life limits are set at the level of 1016–1018 y. Moreover, we estimate the T1/2 of 2ν2ϵ of 174Hf decay at the level of (0.3–6) × 1021 y (at now the related measured lower limit is 7.1×1016 y).

Abstract

Experimental observations and theoretical arguments at Galaxy and larger scales suggested that a large fraction of the universe is composed by Dark Matter particles. This motivated the DAMA experimental efforts to investigate the presence of such particles in the galactic halo by exploiting a model-independent signature and very highly radiopure set-ups deep underground. Here, a review of the model-independent positive results, obtained by the DAMA set-ups at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory of the INFN, and some of the implications will be given.

Abstract

The ZnWO4 crystal scintillator is a promising detector for low counting experiments thanks to the high level of radiopurity and reasonably high optical and scintillation properties. In particular, ZnWO4 scintillators can be utilized in the searches for double beta processes, in the investigation of rare alpha decays and Dark Matter. In fact, one of its main characteristics is to be an anisotropic detector. In the case of interaction of heavy particles or nuclear recoils, the light output and the time profile of the scintillation pulse depend on the direction of the particles with respect to the crystal axes; no difference is observed for γ / β radiation. These anisotropic features can offer a unique possibility to exploit the so-called directionality approach in order to investigate the presence of the Dark Matter candidates which induces nuclear recoils. In fact, their use can overcome the difficulty of detecting extremely short nuclear recoil traces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

A detector containing two radiopure 116CdWO4 crystal scintillators with total mass of 1.2 kg was operated during 35324 h at the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory (INFN, Italy) with the main aim to investigate double beta decay of 116Cd. As a by-product of the experiment, a new upper limit on atomic abundance of hypothetical naturally occurring long-lived seaborgium (eka-tungsten, Z = 106) in tungsten was set at 5.1 10−15 atom(Sg)/atom(W) with 90% C.L. (assuming the Sg half-life of 109 yr) by the analysis of the alpha decay events. This limit is better than those obtained with a ZnWO4 scintillator and in other types of experiments which used the accelerator mass spectrometry or searched for spontaneous fission of superheavy elements.
