Pollination is a crucial ecosystem service, yet pollinator species diversity is declining as a result of factors such as climate change, habitat loss and agricultural intensification. While previous studies have often examined the extreme scenario of complete pollinator removal, showing negative impacts on plant reproductive success, we take a more realistic approach by focusing on the effects of decreasing pollinator diversity. Our global meta-analysis reveals a notable negative impact of reduced pollinator species diversity on plant reproductive success measures, such as seed set, fruit set and fruit weight. Notably, this effect varies across plant families, impacting both self-incompatible and self-compatible species. We also find that wild plant species suffer more than cultivated ones. Furthermore, the loss of invertebrate, nocturnal and wild pollinators has a more substantial impact than the loss of vertebrate, diurnal or managed pollinators. Overall, our findings consistently underscore the positive role of biodiversity in maintaining ecosystem functioning, highlighting the urgency of mitigating factors that lead to the decline in pollinator species diversity., Competing Interests: Competing interests: The authors declare no competing interests., (© 2024. Background: This paper compares the most recent data on the incidence and prevalence of kidney replacement therapy (KRT), kidney transplantation rates, and mortality on KRT from Europe to those from the United States (US), including comparisons of treatment modalities (haemodialysis (HD), peritoneal dialysis (PD), and kidney transplantation (KTx))., Methods: Data were derived from the annual reports of the European Renal Association (ERA) Registry and the United States Renal Data System (USRDS). The European data include information from national and regional renal registries providing the ERA Registry with individual patient data. Additional analyses were performed to present results for all participating European countries together., Results: In 2021, the KRT incidence in the US (409.7 per million population (pmp)) was almost 3-fold higher than in Europe (144.4 pmp). Despite the substantial difference in KRT incidence, approximately the same proportion of patients initiated HD (Europe: 82%, US: 84%), PD (14%; 13%, respectively), or underwent pre-emptive KTx (4%; 3%, respectively). The KRT prevalence in the US (2436.1 pmp) was 2-fold higher than in Europe (1187.8 pmp). Within Europe, approximately half of all prevalent patients were living with a functioning graft (47%), while in the US, this was one third (32%). The number of kidney transplantations performed was almost twice as high in the US (77.0 pmp) compared to Europe (41.6 pmp). The mortality of patients receiving KRT was 1.6-fold higher in the US (157.3 per 1000 patient years) compared to Europe (98.7 per 1000 patient years)., Conclusions: The US had a much higher KRT incidence, prevalence, and mortality compared to Europe, and despite a higher kidney transplantation rate, a lower proportion of prevalent patients with a functioning graft., (© The Author(s) 2024. The use of animal manure as organic fertilizer is a common agricultural practice that can improve soil health and crop yield. However, antibiotics and their metabolites are often present in animal manure and, hence, in manure-amended soil. The aim of this study was to assess the induced development of oxytetracycline (OTC) tolerance in soil bacterial communities as a result of the addition of OTC to soil amended with well-aged cow manure. To this purpose, soil amended with well-aged cow manure was repeatedly - three times - spiked with different OTC concentrations (0, 2, 20, 60, 150, and 500 mg OTC kg -1 dry weight soil, each time) according to a pollution-induced community tolerance (PICT) assay. The PICT detection phase was conducted in Biolog EcoPlates TM in the presence of the following OTC concentration gradient in the wells: 0, 5, 20, 40, 60, and 100 mg L -1 . For all treatments, the application of OTC in the PICT selection phase resulted in lower values of bacterial metabolic activity (i.e., lower values of average well color development) in the PICT detection phase. A significant increase in OTC tolerance was observed in soil bacterial communities that had been exposed three times to ≥ 20 mg OTC kg -1 DW soil during the PICT selection phase. In general, higher levels of OTC exposure during the PICT selection phase resulted in bacterial tolerance to higher OTC concentrations during the PICT detection phase, pointing to a dose-dependent induced tolerance. It is important to (i) rationalize the amount of antibiotics administered to livestock, and (ii) treat properly the antibiotic-containing manure before its application to agricultural soil as fertilizer., (© 2023.
