This paper examines Urbinati’s theory of populism with the aim of bringing to the fore a lacuna in such theory. The lacuna concerns her appreciation of the role of rhetoric in populism and more in general in democracy. If Urbinati’s general understanding of politics recognizes an important role to rhetoric, such recognition is not accompanied by a systematic analysis of what rhetoric is and how it operates. The effects of such deficiency can be appreciated in her theory of populism. On the one hand, her critical account of populism seems to hinge significantly on the kind of rhetoric and more generally of style it adopts, on the other the question of what precisely characterizes such rhetoric and style is left mostly unaddressed. The result is that Urbinati’s account of populism loses some explanatory power, with regards both to the nature of populism and the responses to it.

Dissertação de Mestrado em Filosofia Política, John Rawls e Alasdair MacIntyre, quando considerados em conjunto, são usualmente considerados personagens da controvérsia entre liberais e comunitaristas. Essa divisão é caracterizada em termos de disputa sobre a relação entre o bom e o justo. No entanto, muito se pode ganhar tomando o projeto de Rawls, que defende a justiça como equidade, e o projeto de MacIntyre, desenvolvido na época de seu trabalho marcante After Virtue, como investigações morais distintas. As teorias do bem em ambos os projetos dos autores são apresentadas para numa reflexão sobre o perfeccionismo e os fins da vida. A conexão entre liberalismo e niilismo é sugerida ou negada com diferentes argumentos. Mesmo reconhecendo que as visões de Rawls e MacIntyre são, em última análise, incompatíveis, estes compartilham várias características. Ambos rejeitam o utilitarismo e o kantismo (isto é, Rawls rejeita Kant como uma visão abrangente); ambos apelam na psicologia moral a uma ideia ou princípio aristotélico de que a excelência contém, em certo sentido, sua própria recompensa; ambos falam sobre a unidade de uma vida, um em termos de planos racionais (Rawls) ou da unidade narrativa de uma vida (MacIntyre); e ambos tentam incorporar a preocupação com os que estão “em pior situação” ou com os particularmente “vulneráveis”. O presente trabalho explora as aplicações de ideias divergentes do justo e do bom no pensamento destes dois pensadores. Essas aplicações divergentes, defende-se neste trabalho, partilham um limite comum nas conceções de “Pior” e “Vulnerável”., John Rawls and Alasdair MacIntyre, when considered together, are frequently taken as characters along the liberal-communitarian divide. This divide is often characterized in terms of dispute over the relationship between the good and the just. Yet much is to be gained by taking Rawls’s project, which is of justice as fairness, and MacIntyre’s project, developed by the time of his landmark work After Virtue, as distinct moral inquiries. The theories of the good are presented in both of the authors’ projects, so that a reflection on perfectionism and the ends of life emerges. The connection between liberalism and nihilism is suggested or denied with different arguments. Even acknowledging that Rawls’s and MacIntyre’s views are ultimately incompatible, they share more than a few characteristics. Both reject utilitarianism and Kantianism (that is, Rawls rejects Kant’s comprehensive view); both appeal, as a matter of moral psychology, to an Aristotelian idea or principle that excellence is in some sense its own reward; both talk about the unity of a life, one in terms of rational plans (Rawls) and the other in terms of the narrative unity of a life (MacIntyre); and both try to incorporate concern for the “worst off” or for the particularly vulnerable. In fact, while the present work seeks to explore the divergent applications of the just and the good in the thought of these two thinkers, these divergent applications nevertheless reach a common limit in conceptions of the “Worst Off” and the “Vulnerable.”

Dissertação de mestrado em Economia Social Trabalho, Fascism was a political, economic and social movement that developed in some European countries in the period after the First World War, especially in those facing serious economic crises such as Italy and Germany. Throughout this dissertation we try to find out if the New State in Portugal fitted in and came close to the policies practiced in these fascist regimes. The Nazi political system was characterized by its extremist ideologies based on racism, totalitarianism, nationalism, anti-communism and anti-liberalism. Salazar’s political system had similarities and differences, hence it is relevant to analyse their correlation and possible influence between the two. The Estado Novo followed anti-democratic, anti-liberal, nationalist, corporatist and above all conservative policies. The objective of this project is to perform an explanatory analysis of the events that occurred consequent to the actions of Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany and highlight them with the practices and ideologies of Salazar in Estado Novo (Portugal) in order to verify their correlation, influence and impact., O fascismo foi um movimento político, económico e social que se desenvolveu em alguns países europeus no período após a Primeira Guerra Mundial, principalmente naqueles que enfrentavam graves crises económicas como Itália e Alemanha. Ao longo desta dissertação procura-se descobrir se o Estado Novo em Portugal se aproximou e enquadrou às políticas praticadas nestes regimes fascistas. O sistema político Nazi caracterizava-se pelas suas ideologias extremistas baseadas no racismo, totalitarismo, nacionalismo, anticomunismo e antiliberalismo. O sistema político Salazarista tinha semelhanças e diferenças, daí ser relevante analisar a sua correlação e possível influência entre ambos. O Estado Novo seguia políticas antidemocráticas, antiliberais, nacionalistas, corporativistas e sobretudo políticas conservadoras. O objetivo desta dissertação é realizar uma análise explicativa dos acontecimentos que ocorreram na sequência das ações de Adolf Hitler na Alemanha Nazi e realçá-los com as práticas e ideologias de Salazar no Estado Novo (Portugal) a fim de verificar a sua correlação, influência e impacto.
