Earthquake recurrence intervals, surface-rupture extents, and interactions between faults provide insight into how faults behave and are critical for seismic hazard mitigation and earthquake forecasting. Investigating the paleoseismology of spatially related faults can reveal strain distribution and whether faults rupture as a system or independently. Summer Lake basin, a graben in the northwestern Basin and Range with four active faults (three of which have prior paleoseismic investigations), provides an opportunity to investigate fault interactions. To expand the paleoseismic record, two trenches were excavated across the previously undocumented Thousand Springs fault, exposing a normal fault zone that offsets a sequence of deep- to shallow-water lake sediments, sand dunes containing reworked Mazama ash, and other Cascades-sourced tephra. Tephra units were correlated to known units by their physical characteristics, stratigraphic sequence, glass chemistry, and two new radiocarbon dates from the uppermost lake sediments. Using trench exposures, measured vertical separations through auguring, colluvial wedges, and extrapolated offsets based on a constant sedimentation rate, we identified at least five surface-rupturing earthquakes with a total offset of 3.4 + 2/-1 m in the past ~65 ka. The oldest event (EH5) occurred at 63.8 ± 1.5 ka, event horizon 4 at 36.2 ± 12.7 ka (which could be more than one event), and event horizon 3 at 24.6 ± 0.3 ka. Event horizon 2, a warping event at our site, is likely more than one event and occurred between 7.5 and 10 ka; and the most recent event (EH1+), most likely more than one event, occurred between 3.3 and 7.7 ka. Several events correlate, within error, with events on other faults in the Summer Lake basin, suggesting that (1) the faults generally rupture together as a system, (2) the most recent earthquake may have ruptured all faults in the region, and (3) fault rupture is influenced by the rapid regression of Lake Chewaucan (~13 ka). The abundance of mantle-derived rocks and lavas, in combination with its tectonic evolution, render Mexico a perfect laboratory to investigate the chemical and the isotopic heterogeneity of the lithospheric mantle. New data on the composition of noble gases and CO2 in Mexican mantle xenoliths and lavas is reported. Our samples consist of six ultramafic nodules from the Durango Volcanic Field (DVF) and the San Quintin Volcanic Field (SQVF), monogenetic complexes belonging to the Mexican Basin and Range province; and four lavas from the Sierra Chichinautzin (SCN), a Quaternary monogenetic volcanic field located in the Mexican volcanic arc. Ne and Ar isotopes in fluid inclusions reveal mixing between atmospheric and MORB-like fluids (e.g., 40Ar/36Ar < 1,200). DVF and SQVF nodules record low 40Ar/36Ar and 4He/20Ne that confirm the existence of recycled atmospheric-derived noble gases in the local mantle. The averages of the Rc/Ra ratios (3He/4He corrected for atmospheric contamination) measured in Mexican localities are within the MORB-like range: DVF= 8.39 ± 0.24 Ra, SQVF = 7.43 ± 0.19 Ra and SCN lavas = 7.15 ± 0.33 Ra (1σ). With the aim of assessing the isotopic variability of the Mexican lithospheric mantle, the above results were compared with similar data previously obtained from ultramafic nodules found in the Ventura Espiritu Santo Volcanic Field (VESVF), another Quaternary monogenetic volcanic complex belonging the Basin and Range. The higher 3He/4He ratios in DVF relative to those reported for the VESVF and the SQVF are explained as reflecting different ages of mantle refertilization, triggered by the retreating of the Farallon slab (∼40 Ma ago) and associated delamination slab processes. Vesicular pores are observed in many different soil-forming environments. They can also be re-created in the lab through exposure to cyclic wetting and drying. However, little is known about the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms involved in vesicular pore formation. This study was conducted to test the hypotheses that 1) microbial activity and 2) thermal expansion are important drivers of vesicular pore growth. These hypotheses were tested through laboratory experiments employing treatments to manipulate the biota (i.e. , sterile, non-sterile, and glucose-amended treatments) and temperature change (i.e. , wetting at 7 °C, 23 °C, and 40 °C before drying at 40 °C). The growth of vesicular pores, as well as vughs and planar voids, was compared among the treatments using bulk densities measured by three-dimensional laser scanning and pore analysis by computed tomography. Pore growth was found to be significantly greater in sterile soils compared to non-sterile and glucose-amended soils. Comparison among the temperature treatments showed the greatest pore growth in the samples that experienced the greatest temperature change between wetting and drying (7 °C to 40 °C).
