12. Efficient oxidation attenuates porewater‐derived methane fluxes in mangrove waters

Abstract

Mangroves store significant amounts of carbon in both sediment and water. Methane (CH4) is often produced in anoxic, organic‐rich sediments during carbon degradation and released to overlying waters via porewater exchange. Yet, a portion of CH4can be oxidized to CO2before emission. Here, we investigate whether CH4oxidation impacts its emissions using high‐temporal resolution CH4concentration and stable isotope (δ13C‐CH4) observations collected over 14 tidal cycles in 2 Brazilian mangrove creeks with no river inputs. We found higher CH4concentrations (~ 150 nM) more depleted in 13C (−75‰) during low tide than high tide at both creeks. Similar δ13C‐CH4values between low tide surface waters and porewaters further suggest tidally driven porewater exchange as the main source of CH4. More 13C‐enriched CH4in surface waters and surface sediments than deep sediments indicate partial CH4oxidation prior to exchange with the atmosphere. A stable isotope mass balance revealed that 17–58% of CH4was oxidized at rates of 3–25 μmol m−2d−1in the water column of tidal creeks. A larger portion of deep porewater CH4(45–61%) was oxidized in sediments prior to porewater exchange with surface creek waters. The two mangrove creeks had average water–air CH4fluxes of 51–109 μmol m−2d−1over spring‐neap tidal cycles. These aquatic CH4emissions offset only < 3% of the mangroves' soil carbon sequestration. Overall, CH4oxidation in both surface water and sediment attenuated CH4emissions to the atmosphere.

Abstract

Measurements of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorus (DOP) concentrations are used to characterize the dissolved organic matter (DOM) pool and are important components of biogeochemical cycling in the coastal ocean. Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOM v1; available at https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.964012, Lønborg et al., 2023) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP in coastal waters. These data are complemented by hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables (e.g. chlorophyll a, inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g. dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations of concentrations from all continents. However, most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in DOM measurements from the Southern Hemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62 338 data points for DOC, 20 356 for DON, and 13 533 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequence DOC > DON > DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focus on carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average ± standard deviation (SD): 182±314 µmol C L−1; median: 103 µmol C L−1) is 13-fold higher than the average coastal DON concentration (13.6±30.4 µmol N L−1; median: 8.0 µmol N L−1), which is itself 39-fold higher than the average coastal DOP concentration (0.34±1.11 µmol P L−1; median: 0.18 µmol P L−1). 17. Dissolved greenhouse gas (CO2, CH4, and N2O) emissions from highland lakes of the Andes cordillera in Northern Ecuador.

Abstract

We report, in 15 Ecuadorian mountainous lakes, dissolved concentrations of CO2, CH4, and N2O and a suite of ancillary biogeochemical variables (dissolved inorganic nutrients, oxygen, major cations, dissolved and particulate organic carbon, and the stable isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon and water). The sampled lakes were located in the páramos of Salve Facha and Antisana y Mojanda (northern region of Ecuadorian Andes), along an elevational gradient from 2213 to 4361 m above sea level, as well as a gradient of lake surface area (0.003–6.1 km2) and depth (1–74 m). Most lakes were characterized by lower values of the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) (644–2152 ppm) than usually attributed to tropical lakes (~ 1900 ppm). Three lakes influenced by volcanic inputs were characterized by the highest pCO2 values (3269–10,069 ppm), while two lakes bordered by large cities were characterized by the lowest pCO2 values (208–254 ppm). Dissolved CH4 concentrations ranged between 170 and 24,908 nmol/L and were negatively correlated to lake area and depth. N2O saturation levels ranged between 64% and 101%. The surface waters were undersaturated in N2O with respect to atmospheric equilibrium, probably due to inputs of soil–water with low N2O levels owing to denitrification in soils. The data obtained in the sampled highland lakes was combined with published data from lowland lakes (elevation < 500 m, n = 17 for CO2 and n = 16 for CH4) to derive relations between CO2 and CH4 and lake surface area, allowing to compute CO2 and CH4 lacustrine emissions at the scale of the Amazon basin using the HydroLAKES spatial data set. The CO2 and CH4 emissions from highland lakes (elevation > 500 m) only represented 0.4% and 2% of the total lacustrine emissions at the scale of the Amazon basin, respectively. Total CO2 and CH4 emissions from lakes represented a small fraction (8.6%) of total lentic and lotic CO2 and CH4 emissions at the scale of the Amazon basin. The lake and river emissions of CH4 represented ~ 3% of total CH4 emissions from all compartments of the Amazon basin, mainly attributable to wetlands. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

To ensure the long-term sustainable use of African Great Lakes (AGL), and to better understand the functioning of these ecosystems, authorities, managers and scientists need regularly collected scientific data and information of key environmental indicators over multi-years to make informed decisions. Monitoring is regularly conducted at some sites across AGL; while at others sites, it is rare or conducted irregularly in response to sporadic funding or short-term projects/studies. Managers and scientists working on the AGL thus often lack critical long-term data to evaluate and gauge ongoing changes. Hence, we propose a multi-lake approach to harmonize data collection modalities for better understanding of regional and global environmental impacts on AGL. Climate variability has had strong impacts on all AGL in the recent past. Although these lakes have specific characteristics, their limnological cycles show many similarities. Because different anthropogenic pressures take place at the different AGL, harmonized multi-lake monitoring will provide comparable data to address the main drivers of concern (climate versus regional anthropogenic impact). To realize harmonized long-term multi-lake monitoring, the approach will need: (1) support of a wide community of researchers and managers; (2) political goodwill towards a common goal for such monitoring; and (3) sufficient capacity (e.g., institutional, financial, human and logistic resources) for its implementation. This paper presents an assessment of the state of monitoring the AGL and possible approaches to realize a long-term, multi-lake harmonized monitoring strategy. Key parameters are proposed. The support of national and regional authorities is necessary as each AGL crosses international boundaries.

Here, we present the first edition of a global database (CoastDOM v1 ; available at https://figshare.com/s/512289eb43c4f8e8eaef) compiling previously published and unpublished measurements of DOC, DON, and DOP collected in coastal waters. These data are complemented by hydrographic data such as temperature and salinity and, to the extent possible, other biogeochemical variables (e.g., Chlorophyll-a, inorganic nutrients) and the inorganic carbon system (e.g., dissolved inorganic carbon and total alkalinity). Overall, CoastDOM v1 includes observations from all continents however, most data were collected in the Northern Hemisphere, with a clear gap in coastal water DOM measurements from the Southern Hemisphere. The data included were collected from 1978 to 2022 and consist of 62339 data points for DOC, 20360 for DON and 13440 for DOP. The number of measurements decreases progressively in the sequence DOC > DON > DOP, reflecting both differences in the maturity of the analytical methods and the greater focus on carbon cycling by the aquatic science community. The global database shows that the average DOC concentration in coastal waters (average (standard deviation; SD): 182 (314) µmol C L-1; median: 103 µmol C L-1), is 13-fold greater than the average coastal DON concentrations (average (SD): 13.6 (30.4) µmol N L-1; median: 8.0 µmol N L-1), which was itself 39-fold greater than the average coastal DOP concentrations (average (SD): 0.34 ± 1.11 µmol P L-1; median: 0.18 µmol P L-1). This dataset will be useful to identify global spatial and temporal patterns in DOM and to facilitate reuse of DOC, DON and DOP data in studies aimed at better characterising local biogeochemical processes, closing nutrient budgets, estimating carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous pools, as well as identifying a baseline for modelling future changes in coastal waters. Abstract

A number of species of Chydorus Leach, 1816 (Crustacea: Cladocera) need improvements in their taxonomy much more than any other genus within the family Chydoridae Dybowsky & Grochowski, 1894 emend. Frey, 1967, which makes the systematics of the genus still a puzzle that lacks several pieces. Here, we redescribe the African species Chydorus tilhoi Rey & Saint-Jeans, 1969 and compare its morphology with that of Chydorus sphaericus (O.F. Mller, 1776). The two taxa might be easily differentiated because C. tilhoi has a single and relatively large major head pore with a wide rim, labral keel elongated with a large spine, and postabdomen with postanal part elongated, narrowing distally and with denticles near its anal margin, organized in groups. These morphological traits are absent in C. sphaericus. Chydorus tilhoi and C. sphaericus also differ in the morphology of the first (Inner Distal Lobe setae), third (exopodite proportion), and fifth (exopodite shape) limbs. Based on the literature and our observations, the limb morphology of C. tilhoi has important similarities with that of C. breviceps, C. nitidulus and C. dentifer, and their translocation to a new genus seems to be a fundamental piece in the puzzle of Chydorus.
