Dirofilariasis is a zoonotic disease of domestic and wild carnivores and humans. Subcutaneous migration of the parasite Dirofilaria repens Railliet & Henry, 1911 may cause local swelling with variable localisation. In humans, this parasite can cause damage to the lungs, male genitalia and eyes. The range of D. repens is constantly expanding into new areas and, considering the zoonotic potential of this parasite, it is important to extend the existing data on the morphology of D. repens. The present study provides a morphometric description of D. repens nematodes obtained from subcutaneous tissues of dogs in Ukraine. The aim of this study was to highlight the key features for the identification of parasites of this species. For males, 27 morphometric characteristics were identified, characterising the overall size of the body and the oesophagus, the thickness of the cuticle in the region of the mouth opening, the localisation of the nerve ring and the cloaca, the morphological structure and metric parameters of the spicules, and the length of the tail. For females, 18 morphometric traits were identified that, in addition to common parameters, characterize cuticle thickness in the region of the vulva, localisation of the vulva and anus, body width in the regions of the anus and vulva, and tail length. Congenital fibrinogen disorders encompass a broad range of fibrinogen defects characterized by a wide molecular and clinical spectrum. From the first clinical description of afibrinogenemia in 1920, many major achievements have contributed to a better understanding of these complex disorders. The finding of causative mutations in all three fibrinogen genes has contributed to reveal the molecular mechanisms involved in biosynthesis of the fibrinogen molecule and to clarify the basic processes of fibrin polymerization and fibrinolysis. The compilation of abundant cases with detailed genetic, biological, and clinical features has enabled the classification of congenital fibrinogen disorders into several types and subtypes. Thus, the recent classification of congenital fibrinogen disorder is based not only on the clottable and antigenic fibrinogen levels but also on the patient's clinical phenotype and genotype. Fibrinogen supplementation is the cornerstone of bleeding management in fibrinogen disorders. Since the discovery of blood fractionation, the method of production of fibrinogen concentrate has been progressively modified to significantly improve purity and safety. Nevertheless, the availability of such products is still limited to a few countries and the optimal threshold of fibrinogen to target is still not established. This case study reviews the first archeological cases of avascular femoral head necrosis, known as Legg–Calve–Perthes disease, on two small Roman dogs from ancient Gaul (France). LCPD diagnosis is difficult in advanced degenerative stages of the disease and one of its differential diagnoses is slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE). In both cases presented here, the development of this disease is probably related to the small morphology of the two dogs. Small dogs appeared to emerge in the Roman Empire when the dog became highly specialized. This disease raises questions about the health conditions of these small dogs in Roman times. Background. It was gradually accepted that endoscopic fragment biopsy (EFB) diagnosis cannot accurately guarantee the absence of higher-grade neoplasms within the lesion of the digestive tract. There are no well-established predictors for histopathologically upgrade discrepancies between EFB diagnosing colorectal low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (LGIN) and endoscopic resection (ER) specimens. Methods. A total of 918 colorectal LGINs was histopathologically diagnosed by EFB, including 162 cases with upgrade discrepancy and 756 concordant cases. We compared clinicopathological data of EFB and ER specimens between these two groups. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify predictors for this upgrade histopathology. Results. The predominant upgrade discrepancy of LGINs diagnosed by EFB was upgrades to high-grade dysplasia (114/918, 12.4%), followed by upgrades to intramucosal carcinoma (33/918, 3.6%), submucosal adenocarcinoma (10/918, 1.1%), and advanced adenocarcinoma (5/918, 0.5%). NSAID history (OR 4.83; 95% CI, 2.27-10.27; p < 0.001), insufficient EFB number (OR 2.99; 95% CI, 1.91-4.68; p < 0.001), maximum diameter ≥ 1.0 cm (OR 6.18; 95% CI, 1.32-28.99; p = 0.021), lobulated shape (OR 2.68; 95% CI, 1.65-4.36; p < 0.001), erythema (OR 2.42; 95% CI, 1.50-3.91; p < 0.001), erosion (OR 7.12; 95% CI, 3.91-12.94; p < 0.001), surface unevenness (OR 2.31; 95% CI, 1.33-4.01; p = 0.003), and distal location of the target adenoma (OR 3.29; 95% CI, 1.68-6.41; p < 0.001) were associated with the histologically upgrade discrepancies. Conclusion. NSAID history, insufficient EFB number, adenoma size and location, and abnormal macroscopic patterns are potential predictors for upgrade histopathology of LGINs diagnosed by EFBs. The standardization of EFB number and advanced imaging techniques could minimize the risk of neglecting the potential of this upgrade histopathology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Posttraumatic osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) affects patients at different ages and may lead to functional limitation and joint replacement, with total hip arthroplasty, which is a costly procedure. Proposed methods to optimize ischemic tissue regeneration have been reported. Phosphodiesterase‐5 inhibitors act by inhibiting the degradation of guanosine 3′,5′‐cyclic monophosphate in the nitric oxide pathway, increasing its bioavailability and promoting vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)‐mediated neovascular recruitment and the induction of tissue regeneration in the traumatized bone. Thirty male Sprague–Dawley rats (6 months old) were subjected to an experimental model of traumatic ONFH divided into two groups, according to the administration of 5 mg/kg sildenafil or water (control group). Rats were then killed at 7, 14, and 21 days. Histological (Goldner's trichrome), histochemical (periodic acid–Schiff [PAS]), and immunohistochemical (VEGF and osteopontin [OPN]) techniques were used to quantify bone and vascular responses. Higher levels of VEGF (p < 0.01) and OPN (p < 0.01) immunostaining in the epiphysis, the greater formation of osteoid tissue (p < 0.01 on Day 7; p < 0.05 on Day 14), and higher levels of PAS staining (p < 0.01 on Day 7) were observed in the sildenafil‐treated group. The present study demonstrated that sildenafil optimized bone tissue regeneration by increasing VEGF signaling and OPN expression, with increased bone formation (osteoid and carbohydrate macromolecule deposition) in the early stages following traumatic ischemic insult.
