Background: Systematic reviews (SRs) worldwide suffer from methodological deficiencies, potentially biasing intervention decisions, and Peruvian SRs are no exception. Evaluating SRs led by Peruvian researchers is a crucial step to enhance quality and transparency in decision-making and to identify topics where SRs are either scarce or prioritized for research. Objective: To describe the characteristics and assess the methodological quality of SRs with Peruvian first authors. Methods: We conducted a scoping review within the Scopus database on January 5, 2023. We aimed to identify published SRs of interventions in which the first author had a Peruvian affiliation, published between 2013 and 2022. We evaluated the methodological quality of these SRs using the AMSTAR 2 tool. We assessed the factors associated with the AMSTAR 2 score using adjusted mean differences (aMD), including their 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI). Results: We identified 95 eligible SRs, with a clear upward trend. SRs were primarily published in Q1 (43.2 %) and Q2 (23.2 %) journals, predominantly affiliated with institutions in Lima (90.5 %). Areas like infectious diseases (20.0 %) and dentistry (18.9 %) were most frequent. AMSTAR 2 assessments highlighted deficiencies, with few SRs reporting prior protocols (37.9 %), comprehensive search strategies (23.2 %), explanations for excluded studies (20.0 %), adequate descriptions of included studies (38.3 %), or funding sources (19.1 %). Notably, SRs in Q4 journals (aMD: −19.7, 95 % CI: −33.8 to −5.5) and those on surgical interventions (aMD: −22.6, 95 % CI: −34.7 to −10.4) had lower AMSTAR 2 scores. Conclusions: Although Peruvian-led SRs are increasingly being published, critical deficiencies are common, especially in reporting protocols, search strategies, study descriptions, and funding sources. Addressing these gaps is pivotal for enhancing the credibility and utility of these SRs in informing decision-making.

Primary cardiac angiosarcomas (PCA) are highly aggressive malignant heart tumors. Previous reports have shown a poor prognosis regardless of management, and no consensus or guidelines exist. It is necessary to clarify this information since patients with PCA have a short survival. Therefore, we aimed to systematically review clinical manifestations, management, and outcomes. We systematically searched in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EMBASE. We intended to include cross-sectional studies, case-control studies, cohort studies, and case series that reported clinical characteristics, management, and outcomes of patients with PCA. As a methodological approach, we used the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Case Series and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for cohorts. We included six studies (five case series, one cohort). The mean/median age ranged from 39 to 48.9 years. Male sex was predominant. The most frequent manifestations were dyspnea (range: 50%-80%), pericardial effusion (29% & 56%), and chest pain (10%-39%). The mean tumor size ranged from 5.8 to 7.2 cm, with the majority of these localized in the right atrium (70-100%). The most common locations of metastasis were the lung (20%-55.6%), liver (10%-22.2%), and bone (10%-20%). Resection (22.9%-94%), and chemotherapy as neoadjuvant or adjuvant (30%-100%) were the most commonly used methods of treatment. Mortality ranged from 64.7% to 100%. PCA often presents late in its course and usually results in poor prognosis. We strongly recommend performing multi-institutional prospective cohorts to better study disease course and treatments to develop consensus, algorithms, and guidelines for this type of sarcoma.

BackgroundCoronary disease (CD) is the main cause of mortality worldwide. Data about trends and geographical variation in CD mortality is available in some American countries. This information varies among countries since CD risk factors frequencies vary.ObjectiveTo describe the trend and geographical variation of coronary disease (CD) mortality in Peru, 2005-2017.MethodsAnalysis of secondary data of the Peruvian Ministry of Health's registry of deaths. We analyzed CD mortality. We described the absolute and relative frequency of deaths and age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) by natural regions, departments, age, sex, and year. We also described the change of ASMR between two periods (2005-2010 vs. 2011-2017).ResultsThere were 64,721 CD deaths between 2005 and 2017 (4.12% among all deaths). The absolute frequency of CD deaths was 5,665 and 6,565 in 2005 and 2017, respectively. CD mortality was more frequent in men and older adults. The ASMR varied among natural regions, being higher in the Coast (19.61 per 100,000 inhabitants). The change between the two periods revealed that almost all departments reduced their ASMRs, except for Callao, Lambayeque, and Madre de Dios.ConclusionCD mortality has increased in Peru. Mortality was higher in men and older adults, and it varied among departments. More political efforts are needed to reduce these trends.
