Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs), such as poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), have good flexibility when compared to ceramic-type solid electrolytes. Therefore, it could be an ideal solid electrolyte for zero-excess all-solid-state Li metal battery (ZESSLB), also known as anode-free all-solid-state Li battery, development by offering better contact to the Cu current collector. However, the low Coulombic efficiencies observed from polymer type solid-state Li batteries (SSLBs) raise the concern that PEO may consume the limited amount of Li in ZESSLB to fail the system. Here, we designed ZESSLBs by using all-ceramic half-cells and an extra PEO electrolyte interlayer to study the reactivity between PEO and freshly deposited Li under a real battery operating conduction. By shuttling active Li back from the anode to the cathode, the PEO SPEs can be separated from the ZESSLBs for experimental studies without the influence from cathode materials or possible contamination from the usage of Li foil as the anode. Electrochemical cycling of ZESSLBs shows that the capacities of ZESSLBs with solvent-free and solvent-casted PEO SPEs significantly degraded compared to the ones with Li metal as the anode for the all-solid-state Li batteries. The fast capacity degradation of ZESSLBs using different types of PEO SPEs is evidenced to be associated with Li reacting with PEO, residual solvent, and water in PEO and dead Li formation upon the presence or absence of residual solvent. The results suggest that avoiding direct contact between the PEO electrolyte and deposited lithium is necessary when there is only a limited amount of Li available in ZESSLBs.

Advances in lithium-ion battery (LIB) research have strived for high-energy, safe, and sustainable materials. Li-rich Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2(LRNM) cathodes have shown great promise with high voltages and excellent specific capacities. Obstacles preventing the viability and commercialization of LRNM are the initial capacity loss of roughly 30% and rapid voltage decay upon cycling. Herein, lithium oxalate (Li2C2O4) is investigated as a pre-lithiation additive to utilize the first-cycle lithium re-intercalation losses of LRNM to compensate the irreversible lithium consumption in graphite and high-capacity a-Si on copper silicide nanowire (a-Si/CuSi NW) anodes. Specifically, the decomposition process of Li2C2O4as well as the interaction between the electrode components inside the cell are comprehensively examined. This concept allows us to extend the cycle life of graphite||LRNM cells at 1 C from less than 500 cycles (142 mAh g−1, 78%) to more than 900 cycles (143 mAh g−1, 82%) before reaching the 80% capacity retention threshold. Finally, LRNM electrodes with a precisely balanced concentration of Li2C2O4are prepared in order to compensate the high irreversible losses of a-Si/CuSi NW anodes, achieving a capacity retention of almost 50% with a remaining specific capacity of 82 mAh g−1after 400 cycles in high-energy a-Si/CuSi NW||LRNM lithium-ion cells.

BackgroundChest CT displays chest pathology better than chest X-ray (CXR). We evaluated the effects on health outcomes of replacing CXR by ultra-low-dose chest-CT (ULDCT) in the diagnostic work-up of patients suspected of non-traumatic pulmonary disease at the emergency department.MethodsPragmatic, multicentre, non-inferiority randomised clinical trial in patients suspected of non-traumatic pulmonary disease at the emergency department. Between 31 January 2017 and 31 May 2018, every month, participating centres were randomly allocated to using ULDCT or CXR. Primary outcome was functional health at 28 days, measured by the Short Form (SF)-12 physical component summary scale score (PCS score), non-inferiority margin was set at 1 point. Secondary outcomes included hospital admission, hospital length of stay (LOS) and patients in follow-up because of incidental findings.Results2418 consecutive patients (ULDCT: 1208 and CXR: 1210) were included. Mean SF-12 PCS score at 28 days was 37.0 for ULDCT and 35.9 for CXR (difference 1.1; 95% lower CI: 0.003). After ULDCT, 638/1208 (52.7%) patients were admitted (median LOS of 4.8 days; IQR 2.1–8.8) compared with 659/1210 (54.5%) patients after CXR (median LOS 4.6 days; IQR 2.1–8.8). More ULDCT patients were in follow-up because of incidental findings: 26 (2.2%) versus 4 (0.3%).ConclusionsShort-term functional health was comparable between ULDCT and CXR, as were hospital admissions and LOS, but more incidental findings were found in the ULDCT group. Our trial does not support routine use of ULDCT in the work-up of patients suspected of non-traumatic pulmonary disease at the emergency department.Trial registration numberNTR6163.

Tuberculosis (TB) lesions in humans have been proven to be severely hypoxic with hypoxia leading to latency and dormancy of disease. Dormant TB lesions become less susceptible to standard TB treatment regimens with varying responses to treatment but may have increased susceptibility to nitroimidazole drugs. This in turn implies that positron emission tomography / computed tomography (PET/CT) imaging with radiolabelled nitroimidazoles may identify patients who will benefit from treatment with antimicrobial agents that are active against anaerobic bacteria. This case series aims to highlight the hypoxic uptake and retention of a novel 68Ga‐labelled hypoxia‐seeking agent in TB lesions at different time points during anti‐TB therapy using PET/CT imaging. Patients with confirmed TB underwent whole‐body PET/CT after administration of a 68Ga‐nitroimidazole derivative at baseline and follow‐up. Images were analysed both qualitatively and semi‐quantitatively. Hypoxic uptake and change in uptake over time were analysed using lesion‐to‐muscle ratio (LMR) and lesion‐to‐blood ratio (LBR). 68Ga‐nitroimidazole avid lesions were demonstrated most frequently in the upper lobes of the lung. Low‐grade hypoxic uptake was visualised in areas of consolidation, cavitation, nodules and lymph nodes. From baseline to follow‐up imaging, the LMR increased with persistent hypoxic load despite morphologic improvement. This case series highlights the dynamic hypoxic microenvironment in TB lesions. From these initial data, it appears that 68Ga‐nitroimidazole is a promising candidate for monitoring hypoxic load in patients diagnosed with TB. Such imaging could identify patients who would benefit from individualised therapy targeting other mechanisms in the TB microenvironment with the intention to predict or improve treatment response. There is increasing application of PET/CT imaging in infectious diseases such as tuberculosis. Imaging potential stressors such as hypoxia, using a novel Ga‐68 labelled hypoxia seeking agent, has the potential to identify patients who may benefit from individualised treatment strategies. This case series highlights promising initial results of hypoxia PET/CT imaging in tuberculosis.
