Reliable, long-term records of glacier mass change are invaluable to the glaciological and climate-change communities and used to assess the importance of glacier wastage on streamflow. Here we evaluate the in-situ observations of glacier mass change for Place (1982–2020) and Peyto glaciers (1983–2020) in western Canada. We use geodetic mass balance to calibrate a physically-based mass-balance model coupled with an ice dynamics routine. We find large discrepancies between the glaciological and geodetic records for the periods 1987–1993 (Place) and 2001–2006 (Peyto). Over the period of observations, the exclusion of ice dynamics in the model increased simulated cumulative mass change by ~10.6 (24%) and 7.1 (21%) m w.e. for Place and Peyto glacier, respectively. Cumulative mass loss using geodetic, modelled and glaciological approaches are respectively − 30.5 ± 4.5, − 32.0 ± 3.6, − 29.7 ± 3.6 m w.e. for Peyto Glacier (1982–2017) and − 45.9 ± 5.2, − 43.1 ± 3.1, − 38.4 ± 5.1 m w.e. for Place Glacier (1981–2019). Based on discrepancies noted in the mass-balance records for certain decades (e.g. 1990s), we caution the community if these data are to be used for hydrological model development.

The global retreat of alpine glaciers provides visible evidence of industrial-era warming, but how glacier position today compares to glacier length fluctuations over the Holocene is less clear. Glaciers in North America advanced over the Holocene, occupying their maximum Holocene position in the late 19th century before rapidly retreating to their sizes today. We assess when four North American glaciers, located between 38–60° N, were larger or smaller than their modern (2018–2020 CE) sizes during the Holocene. We measure 26 paired cosmogenic in situ 14C and 10Be concentrations in recently exposed proglacial bedrock and applied a Monte Carlo forward model to reconstruct plausible bedrock exposure-burial histories. We find that these glaciers advanced past their modern sizes thousands of years apart during the Holocene: a glacier in the Juneau Ice Field (BC, Canada) by ~2 ka, Kokanee Glacier (BC, Canada) at ~6 ka, and Mammoth Glacier (WY, USA) at ~1 ka; the fourth glacier, Conness Glacier (CA, USA), was larger than its modern size for the duration of the Holocene until present. The disparate Holocene exposure-burial histories are at odds with expectations of similar glacier histories given the presumed shared climate forcings of decreasing Northern Hemisphere summer insolation through the Holocene followed by global greenhouse gas forcing in the industrial era. We interpret the range in histories to be the result of unequal amounts of modern retreat relative to each glacier’s Holocene length history, rather than asynchronous Holocene advance histories. The intensity and rate of modern warming has exacerbated length differences between glaciers that occur due to hypsometry and response time. We hypothesize that highly varying magnitudes of glacier change in North America today is a departure from similar magnitudes of glacier change over the Holocene.

Landslides are major drivers of landscape evolution. Mass-wasting events connect hillslope and channel processes through the downslope transferal of sediment, which can impact fluvial systems in a multitude of ways. Coarse sediment delivered into the channel can impact flow dynamics, alter river incision rates through the tools and cover effect, deflect reach-scale river alignment, and disrupt riverine ecosystems. The feedbacks between landslides, fluvial processes, and landscape evolution remain largely unexplored despite increasingly detailed landslide inventories, enabled by the availability of airborne lidar mapping and high-resolution topographic data. To better understand the nature of these feedbacks across varying lithologies, tectonic conditions and valley morphologies we explore post-glacial landslides (~14 ka to present) in the Fraser River valley in southwest British Columbia, Canada. We created a landslide inventory using existing literature and 2,560 km2 of new airborne lidar along the Fraser Canyon corridor, a 375-km stretch of the Fraser River, which flows through multiple regions with distinct climate, morphology, and geology. We documented ~300 landslides with areas between 2 x 103 and 2 x 106 m2. Failure types include translational bedrock slides, earthflows, and rock avalanches, which vary systematically with bedrock geology and valley morphometrics. We find more translational bedrock and earthflow failures in the broader, U-shaped valley of the northern Fraser River canyons, where sedimentary, metasedimentary, and volcanic bedrock are more common. Rock avalanches are more common in the southern Fraser River canyon, where valley walls are composed of plutonic and metamorphic rocks, however the southern region has fewer landslide features overall. These findings suggest individual failures and their combined impact on the post-glacial evolution of the Fraser River are sensitive to both the geologic and glacial history of a particular stretch of river.

Western Canada contains 72% of the glaciers within the Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI) region 2 (Western Canada and USA), and these glaciers constitute 95% of the region’s total ice cover. Recent studies exploiting stereoscopic imagery from NASA’s Terra satellite (ASTER) have reduced biases in the number, type and distribution of glaciers used to assess regional glacier mass change. The elevation uncertainty of ASTER digital terrain models, in addition to infrequent sampling, confounds its use to detect trends in elevation change at seasonal scales or for small glaciers (< 1km2). Since summer 2014, the Hakai-UNBC Airborne Coastal Observatory (ACO) routinely acquires laser altimetric data at the end of the accumulation (late-April to early May) and ablation (early to late September) over many of western Canada’s glaciers and icefields using an aircraft equipped with an 1064-nm laser scanner and dedicated positional hardware. Post-processed uncertainties of repeated, co-registered elevational data over stable terrain yield uncertainties that are typically below ±0.3 m (±1s). Since 2020, our bi-annual acquisitions sample over 800 glaciers (about 2,000 km2), which constitutes about 15% of the total areal extent of ice in RGI-02. While the area-altitude distribution of ACO sampled glaciers largely accord with those of RGI-02, our sampling program captures fewer glaciers that exist at highest elevations, and the average glacier size surveyed by us is about three times larger than the average glacier size within RGI-02 (0.77 km2). Our archive reveals important aspects of glacier elevation change that cannot be obtained from existing publicly available sources of digital terrain data such as the magnitude of seasonal to inter-annual changes during the accumulation and ablation seasons, short-term horizontal transfers of mass, changes in volume and extent of transient late-lying snow, and the effects of short-term meteorological events (e.g. heat waves or forest fires) on regional melt events for a given year. We plan to release this archive to the public so it can be used to validate in-situ mass balance measurement programs, improve melt models and provide insight into physical factors that drive glacier change.

Seasonal to long-term changes in albedo, or glacier darkening, is a critical parameter for energy and mass balance models. Yet many of these models employ simple parameterization schemes that darken snow and ice surfaces non-linearly through time. This simplification is not representative of the complex controls on albedo that vary spatially and temporally, driven by atmospheric processes, surface-atmosphere interaction, topography, and timing of glacier ice exposure. Albedo also spectrally varies, controlled by concentrations of light absorbing constituents (LACs) in the visible wavelengths and grain size in the near infrared wavelengths. Radiative forcing by LACs can enhance grain growth, leading to more rapid glacier darkening over the full solar spectrum. This process can accelerate as snow and ice melts because LACs tend to accumulate at the surface which can lead to increased radiative forcing over time for some glaciers. As temperatures warm, and aerosols increase due to land use change, drought, fire, and urbanization, it is likely that glacier darkening will intensify. To better quantify seasonal rates of darkening, and understand controls on intra- and interannual variability, we collected and analyzed a rich dataset obtained from imaging spectroscopy and lidar collected over Place Glacier in the Coast Mountains of British Columbia, Canada. Over the years 2021-2022, we acquired monthly data during the period of snow and glacier melt (March to October for 2021 and July to October 2022) using an aircraft with dedicated lidar (Riegl-780) and hyperspectral (Specim-Fenix; 451 bands) sensors. We processed these monthly acquisitions into 1-m, analysis-ready products. We describe our workflow for these products including development of snow and ice surface property retrievals in complex mountainous terrain. Our workflow yields retrievals that include broadband albedo, radiative forcing by LACs, and grain size. Radiative forcing from LACs can originate from abiotic and biotic sources, and we use the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) to interpret our retrievals with respect to contributions from dust and black carbon. We also highlight how these data can be used to understand seasonal glacier darkening events that occurred during a heat dome, snow algae blooms, and a late start to accumulation season. All these events are expected to increase in frequency or intensity due to climate change and hence, a better understanding of these physical processes will lead to improved physical models for future glacier evolution.

Over the last century, northwestern Canada experienced some of the highest rates of tropospheric warming globally, which caused glaciers in the region to rapidly retreat. Our study seeks to extend the record of glacier fluctuations and assess climate drivers prior to the instrumental record in the Mackenzie and Selwyn Mountains of northwestern Canada. We collected 27 10Be surface exposure ages across nine cirque and valley glacier moraines to constrain the timing of their emplacement. Cirque and valley glaciers in this region reached their greatest Holocene extents in the latter half of the Little Ice Age (1600–1850 CE). Four erratics, 10–250 m distal from late Holocene moraines, yielded 10Be exposure ages of 10.9–11.6 ka, demonstrating that by ca. 11 ka, alpine glaciers were no more extensive than during the last several hundred years. Estimated temperature change obtained through reconstruction of equilibrium line altitudes show that since ca. 1850 CE, mean annual temperatures rose 0.2–2.3 °C. We use our glacier chronology and the Open Global Glacier Model (OGGM) to estimate that since 850 CE, glaciers in this region reached a maximum total volume of 34–38 km3 between 1765–1855 CE and have lost nearly half their ice volume by 2019 CE. OGGM was unable to produce modeled glacier lengths that match the timing or magnitude of the maximum glacier extent indicated by the 10Be chronology. However, when applied to the entire Mackenzie and Selwyn Mountain region, past-millennium OGGM simulations using the Max Planck Institute Earth System Model (MPI-ESM) and the Community Climate System Model 4 (CCSM4) yield late Holocene glacier volume change temporally consistent with our moraine and remote sensing record, while the Meteorological Research Institute Earth System Model 2 (MRI-ESM2) and the Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate (MIROC) fail to produce modeled glacier change consistent with our glacier chronology. Finally, OGGM forced by future climate projections under varying greenhouse gas emissions scenarios predict 85 to over 97 % glacier volume loss by the end of the 21st century. The loss of glaciers from this region will have profound impacts to local ecosystems and communities that rely on meltwaters from glacierized catchments.

Snowmelt runoff serves both human needs and ecosystem services and is an important parameter in operational forecasting systems. Sentinel-1 synthetic-aperture-radar (SAR) observations can estimate the timing of melt within a snowpack; however, these estimates have not been applied on large spatial scales. Here we present a workflow to combine Sentinel-1 SAR and optical data from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 to estimate the onset and duration of snowmelt in the La Joie Basin, a 985 km2 watershed in the southern Coast Mountains of British Columbia. A backscatter threshold is used to infer the point at which snowpack saturation occurs and the snowpack begins to produce runoff. Multispectral imagery is used to estimate snow-free dates across the basin to define the end of the snowmelt period. SAR estimates of snowmelt onset form consistent trends in terms of elevation and aspect on the watershed scale and reflect snowmelt records from continuous snow water equivalence observations. SAR estimates of snowpack saturation are most effective on moderate to low slopes (< 30∘) in open areas. The accuracy of snowmelt duration is reduced due to persistent cloud cover in optical imagery. Despite these challenges, snowmelt duration agrees with trends in snow depths observed in the La Joie Basin. This approach has high potential for adaptability to other alpine regions and can provide estimates of snowmelt timing in ungauged basins.

Bedrock inner gorges, or narrow and deeply-incised canyons set within broader valleys, are common features in post-glacial landscapes and may reflect the interaction of glacial-fluvial processes. Though widespread, the origins of bedrock inner gorges are enigmatic and have been variably attributed to subglacial meltwater during deglaciation, outburst floods, and subaerial fluvial incision as a response to base level change. It is also unclear if their morphology reflects erosion from a single deglacial period or evolution over multiple glacial-interglacial cycles.Given widespread inner gorges, quartz-bearing rocks, and a history of multiple glaciations, the Fraser Canyon – a 375-km stretch of the Fraser River in British Columbia (Canada) characterized by alternating bedrock and non-bedrock reaches – is an ideal area to explore the drivers of inner gorge incision. Using topographic analyses to characterize the morphology of these bedrock gorges, we assess incision rates required to form the canyons since deglaciation (~14 – 11.7 ka). Using the morphology (e.g., slope) of glacio-fluvial terraces and channel long profile analyses (e.g., ksn), we evaluate whether inner gorges likely formed through 1) interaction of glacial and fluvial erosion during glaciation, 2) one or more catastrophic outburst floods, or 3) steady subaerial fluvial erosion due to isostatic uplift/base level fall since deglaciation. We conclude by exploring the relative efficacy of these erosional processes and implications for the longevity of fluvial and glacial landscapes.

Glacier mass balance models are needed at sites with scarce long-term observations to reconstruct past glacier mass balance and assess its sensitivity to future climate change. In this study, North American Regional Reanalysis (NARR) data were used to force a physically based, distributed glacier mass balance model of Saskatchewan Glacier for the historical period 1979–2016 and assess its sensitivity to climate change. A 2-year record (2014–2016) from an on-glacier automatic weather station (AWS) and historical precipitation records from nearby permanent weather stations were used to downscale air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, incoming solar radiation and precipitation from the NARR to the station sites. The model was run with fixed (1979, 2010) and time-varying (dynamic) geometry using a multitemporal digital elevation model dataset. The model showed a good performance against recent (2012–2016) direct glaciological mass balance observations as well as with cumulative geodetic mass balance estimates. The simulated mass balance was not very sensitive to the NARR spatial interpolation method, as long as station data were used for bias correction. The simulated mass balance was however sensitive to the biases in NARR precipitation and air temperature, as well as to the prescribed precipitation lapse rate and ice aerodynamic roughness lengths, showing the importance of constraining these two parameters with ancillary data. The glacier-wide simulated energy balance regime showed a large contribution (57 %) of turbulent (sensible and latent) heat fluxes to melting in summer, higher than typical mid-latitude glaciers in continental climates, which reflects the local humid “icefield weather” of the Columbia Icefield. The static mass balance sensitivity to climate was assessed for prescribed changes in regional mean air temperature between 0 and 7 ∘C and precipitation between −20 % and +20 %, which comprise the spread of ensemble Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) climate scenarios for the mid (2041–2070) and late (2071–2100) 21st century. The climate sensitivity experiments showed that future changes in precipitation would have a small impact on glacier mass balance, while the temperature sensitivity increases with warming, from −0.65 to −0.93 m w.e. a−1 ∘C−1. The mass balance response to warming was driven by a positive albedo feedback (44 %), followed by direct atmospheric warming impacts (24 %), a positive air humidity feedback (22 %) and a positive precipitation phase feedback (10 %). Our study underlines the key role of albedo and air humidity in modulating the response of winter-accumulation type mountain glaciers and upland icefield-outlet glacier settings to climate.

The Cordilleran Ice Sheet in western North America was of comparable size and topographic setting to the modern Greenland Ice Sheet and exhibited similar dynamics. Ice streams channelled rapid flow and the western ice margin terminated in both marine and terrestrial environments. Reconstructing Cordilleran Ice Sheet retreat can therefore provide a helpful analogue for how the Greenland Ice Sheet may respond to changing climate and underlying topography in the future. Moreover, deglaciation in this region controlled routes available for early human migration into the Americas. Here, we present cosmogenic 10Be nuclide exposure ages from glacial erratics and bedrock on the west coast of British Columbia (53.4°N, 129.8°W) that add to existing chronologies along ~600 km of coastal North America. Collectively, these data show deglaciation back to the present coastline by ca. 18–16 ka. Retreat then slowed and ice seemingly stabilised close to the present coastline for several thousand years until ca. 14–13 ka. Ice may still have been lost during this period of relative stability, but through vertical thinning rather than lateral retreat. We attribute initial retreat to destabilisation and grounding line retreat resulting from rising sea level and/or ocean warming in the northern Pacific. Subsequent stability at the present coast was likely due to the transition from marine to terrestrial margins despite increasing temperatures that may have driven ice sheet thinning. Hence, we show the importance of understanding both climatic and non-climatic drivers of ice sheet change through time. We also show that hundreds of kilometres of coastline were free of ice prior to an important period of early human migration into the Americas.
