The knowledge of impurities is an important issue and the base of quality control in modern drugs. To date, the quality control of the antitumor drug homoharringtonine (HHT) is still not sufficiently solved and needs to be improved. Six main impurities, drupacine, cephalotaxine, desmethylcephalotaxinone, harringtonine, 3-O-acetyl-cephalotaxine and 2'R,3'S-isoharringtonine were traced during HHT drug production by HPLC and LC-MS analyses. Additionally, we were able to isolate and identify three undescribed key trace impurities, neohomoharringtonines A–C. Their structures were established by 1D-, and 2D NMR experiments combined with mass spectrometry. An improved quality inspection ability of HHT was constructed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mimicry of non‐rewarding flowers to rewarding flowers has been accepted as a strategy to improve pollination success in angiosperms. It has been proposed that this mechanism depends on whether potential pollinators can discriminate between the flowers. In this study, the intersexual mimicry and deceit pollination were studied in a threatened dioecious aquatic herb, Ottelia acuminata. Its female flowers resemble male flowers in morphology and odor compounds, to avoid discrimination by pollinators and outcompete male flowers in attracting the pollinators using stronger scents and bigger flowers. However, an obvious visit bias of its pollinator (Apis cerana) to male flowers was detected, suggesting that bees can distinguish the rewarding males from non‐rewarding females. Although the deceit was not successful, pollination was not seriously undermined because pollen limitation was found to be low in the sampled natural population. We speculate that, due to "accidental" visits on female flowers and "mistake" pollinations, pollen limitation could be mitigated by a high frequency of pollen donors, and is correlated with the size and sex ratio of a population. Ottelia acuminata is a threatened dioecious aquatic herb. We suggest that developing multi‐stakeholder coalitions should be encouraged to save the threatened edible and ornamental plant species in China. Four new ursane-type triterpenoids named rosaroxine A-D and 21 known compounds were identified from Rosa roxburghii fruits. The structures of all compounds were established by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. The phenolics catechin (EC 50 13.4 μM), quercetin (13.1 μM), gallic acid (10.0 μM), and protocatechuic acid (15.2 μM) were identified as powerful in vitro antioxidants with EC 50 values lower than ascorbic acid (31.3 μM). The triterpenoids rosaroxine C (EC 50 37.4; 40.3 μM) and 2-oxo-pomolic acid (16.6; 28.2) and the phenolics catechin (53.3; 29.0), quercetin (18.8; 33.1), and gallic acid (26.3; 40.0) exerted partly higher activities in the cyclo-oxygenase (COX 1/2) assay than the positive control acetaminophen (EC 50 45.0; >100 μM). The triterpenoids rosaroxine C and 2-oxo-pomolic acid also performed well in the anti-aging assay using HaCaT cells. Quantification of the bioactive compounds by LC-MS revealed concentrations of 3.08 mg kg -1 rosaroxine C, 17.40 mg kg -1 2-oxo-pomolic acid, 76.29 mg kg -1 catechin, and 5.58 mg kg -1 protocatechuic acid in the dried fruits. Five dimeric Erythrina alkaloids, named erythrivarines J-N, were isolated from the barks of Erythrina variegata L. (Fabaceae). The erythrivarines J-L featured a 6/6/5/6/6/5/6/6/6 ring system and super conjugated double bond systems, causing intense color from blue to wine red, while erythrivarines M-N looked orange. The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR experiments combined with MS and confirmed by the X-ray crystal diffraction technique. The performed bioassay using HEI-OC-1 cells revealed neuroprotective properties of erythrivarine N against the hearing loss causing antibiotics, neomycin.
