Background: Acute application of adjunctive negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) significantly improves time to re-epithelialization in pediatric burn patients. This adjunctive treatment has not yet been broadly or routinely adopted as a standard primary burns dressing strategy. The Implementation of Negative PRessurE for acute Pediatric burns (INPREP) trial will implement and evaluate the impact of adjunctive NPWT in parallel with co-designed implementation strategies and resources across four major pediatric hospitals. Methods: We will conduct a multi-center, prospective, stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial to implement adjunctive NPWT for acute pediatric burns. Participants will include pediatric burn patients presenting to one of four Australian tertiary pediatric hospitals for burn treatment. The intervention is adjunctive NPWT in parallel with co-designed and tailored implementation strategies and a suite of NPWT implementation resources, which form the INPREP toolkit. Using a hybrid type III design, this trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness of NPWT implementation in parallel with the INPREP toolkit using (i) implementation outcomes (e.g., adoption, appropriateness, acceptability, feasibility, and sustainability) and (ii) clinical outcomes (e.g., days to re-epithelialization, scar management requirements, skin grafting requirements). The primary outcome of this trial is treatment adoption–the proportion of eligible patients who receive NPWT. Discussion: This manuscript outlines a protocol for a hybrid type III stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial of adjunctive NPWT implementation in acute pediatric burn care. We anticipate that NPWT implementation in parallel with the INPREP toolkit will be generalizable to emergency departments and burn services across Australia, and evidence generated will inform pediatric burn care internationally. Aim: This study aimed to gain a better understanding of nursing/midwifery students' perspectives on a pedagogy of caring and online learning during the COVID‐19 pandemic. In addition, it aimed to determine if the COVID‐19 pandemic impacted students' perceptions and experience of online learning and students' desire to enter the nursing/midwifery workforce. Design: Mixed methods. Methods: A multi‐centre cross‐sectional survey of Australian nursing and midwifery students was undertaken to explore students' experience of learning during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Results: There are several key findings from this study that may be relevant for the future delivery of undergraduate health education, students transitioning to practice and healthcare workforce retention. The study found that although students were somewhat satisfied with online learning during COVID‐19, students reported significant issues with knowledge/skill acquisition and barriers to the learning process. The students reported feeling less prepared for practice and identified how clinical staff were unable to provide additional guidance and support due to increased workloads and stress. The textual responses of participants highlighted that connection/disconnection, empathy and engagement/disengagement had an impact on learning during COVID‐19. Conclusion: Connection, engagement and isolation were key factors that impacted nursing students' online learning experiences. In addition, graduates entering the workforce felt less prepared for entry into practice due to changes in education delivery during COVID‐19 that they perceived impacted their level of clinical skills, confidence and ability to practice as new graduate nurses/midwives. Background: Peripheral intravenous catheters (PIVCs) are the most used invasive medical device in healthcare. Yet around half of insertion attempts are unsuccessful leading to delayed medical treatments and patient discomfort of harm. Ultrasound-guided PIVC (USGPIVC) insertion is an evidence-based intervention shown to improve insertion success especially in patients with Difficult IntraVenous Access (BMC Health Serv Res 22:220, 2022), however the implementation in some healthcare settings remains suboptimal. This study aims to co-design interventions that optimise ultrasound guided PIVC insertion in patients with DIVA, implement and evaluate these initiatives and develop scale up activities. Methods: A stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial will be conducted in three hospitals (two adult, one paediatric) in Queensland, Australia. The intervention will be rolled out across 12 distinct clusters (four per hospital). Intervention development will be guided by Michie's Behavior Change Wheel with the aim to increase local staff capability, opportunity, and motivation for appropriate, sustainable adoption of USGPIVC insertion. Eligible clusters include all wards or departments where > 10 PIVCs/week are typically inserted. All clusters will commence in the control (baseline) phase, then, one cluster per hospital will step up every two months, as feasible, to the implementation phase, where the intervention will be rolled out. Implementation strategies are tailored for each hospital by local investigators and advisory groups, through context assessments, staff surveys, and stakeholder interviews and informed by extensive consumer interviews and consultation. Outcome measures align with the RE-AIM framework including clinical-effectiveness outcomes (e.g., first-time PIVC insertion success for DIVA patients [primary outcome], number of insertion attempts); implementation outcomes (e.g., intervention fidelity, readiness assessment) and cost effectiveness outcomes. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research framework will be used to report the intervention as it was implemented; how people participated in and responded to the intervention; contextual influences and how the theory underpinning the intervention was realised and delivered at each site. A sustainability assessment will be undertaken at three- and six-months post intervention. Discussion: Study findings will help define systematic solutions to implement DIVA identification and escalation tools aiming to address consumer dissatisfaction with current PIVC insertion practices. Such actionable knowledge is critical for implementation of scale-up activities. Importance: Emergency triage is prone to error, and quality assurance measures to detect errors are mostly retrospective. Undetected triage practice errors may expose patients to unsafe delays in care, contributing to patient deterioration and harm., Objective: To map the academic and gray literature on the impact of emergency triage practice errors on patient outcomes., Evidence Review: The scoping review will incorporates reports of patient outcomes related to emergency triage practice errors. Studies reporting patient outcomes of triage (case and cohort), patient experience surveys, and reviews will be included. Studies will be excluded if they omit patient outcomes of triage or report only accuracy, reliability, validity, or clinician opinion. The search will include the academic literature databases of Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health literature; PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science; Australasian Legal Information Institute; British and Irish Legal Information Institute; and the gray literature search engines of Google Advanced, Patient Safety Network, and the Clinical Excellence Commission. Two reviewers will independently screen titles and abstracts, then full-text papers, with a third reviewer resolving any conflicts. Data extraction and summary will be presented in charts, tables, and narrative formats., Discussion: This protocol details our planned scoping review of the impact of triage practice errors on patient outcomes. Background: Transitioning into the first year of clinical practice as a nurse or changing specialties in the nursing career presents a critical phase for novice nurses characterized by excitement, apprehension, and the phenomenon of "transition shock." Within perioperative nursing, this transition phase takes on distinctive challenges. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence on transition programs and arrangements., Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the current transition-to-practice (TTP) arrangements available to new graduate and novice nurses within Australian perioperative nursing settings., Methods: This study uses an exploratory mixed-method, multilevel triangulation with a sequential phase design to address 4 research questions. Phases 1 to 3 will use document analysis, surveys, and semistructured interviews to establish the findings of the research questions. Phase 4 will use meta-inference and triangulation to aggregate and analyze the data from all preceding phases. These findings will be the foundation for developing a framework to inform future TTP arrangements. This robust framework will embed empirical evidence, existing literature, and sound learning and teaching pedagogy. Results emerging from this study will be reported using the Good Reporting of Mixed Methods Study guidelines., Results: This project received approval in June 2023. Following this, Human Research Ethics Committee approval was sought for phases 1 and 2, and recruitment began. As of August 2024, phase 1 has collected 50 responses and phase 2 has collected 69 responses. Data collection for phase 3 is projected to commence in May 2025 once data from phases 1 and 2 have been analyzed. Phase 4 is projected to occur in 2026.
