Abstract

A torção do cordão espermático é uma emergência cirúrgica bem reconhecida na prática clínica. Contudo, a sua apresentação clínica num doente com criptorquidia é atípica, podendo simular um abdómen agudo. Isto pode atrasar o diagnóstico e, por conseguinte, o devido tratamento. Perante casos de torção do cordão espermático, a investigação e orientação precoces são fundamentais, de forma a evitar complicações e preservar a função testicular. Desta forma, é essencial o reconhecimento desta entidade clínica pelos clínicos para a sua intervenção atempada. Os autores descrevem um caso de torção de cordão espermático num testículo criptorquídico no canal inguinal numa criança de nove anos, que se apresentou com dor abdominal, inicialmente peri-umbilical, com posterior migração para a fossa ilíaca direita.

Abstract

A massagem infantil é uma terapia complementar que tem suscitado um interesse crescente na comunidade científica pelos seus potenciais benefícios no alívio sintomático de condições pediátricas frequentes. O seu mecanismo fisiopatológico ainda não está completamente estabelecido, porém é uma prática que favorece a comunicação e o vínculo com os cuidadores, promovendo uma sensação de conforto e bem-estar do lactente. Segundo a literatura mais recente, a massagem infantil parece ser promissora no alívio da dor, na diminuição da icterícia, no tratamento adjuvante da obstipação funcional, na melhoria da qualidade do sono e no crescimento e desenvolvimento infantis. Assim, como terapêutica não farmacológica, parece ter benefícios, sendo praticamente desprovida de efeitos adversos. Contudo, atualmente, ainda existem poucos estudos randomizados acerca desta temática, pelo que a qualidade da evidência é baixa, constituindo uma limitação para a sua recomendação universal na prática clínica.

We show that the power-law decay exponents in von Neumann's Ergodic Theorem (for discrete systems) are the pointwise scaling exponents of a spectral measure at the spectral value~$1$. Abstract

We prove sharp estimates on the time-average behavior of the squared absolute value of the Fourier transform of some absolutely continuous measures that may have power-law singularities, in the sense that their Radon-Nikodym derivatives diverge with a power-law order. We also discuss an application to spectral measures of finite-rank perturbations of the discrete Laplacian.

Abstract

The provision of probiotics benefits the health of a wide range of organisms, from humans to animals and plants. Probiotics can enhance stress resilience of endangered organisms, many of which are critically threatened by anthropogenic impacts. The use of so-called 'probiotics for wildlife' is a nascent application, and the field needs to reflect on standards for its development, testing, validation, risk assessment, and deployment. Here, we identify the main challenges of this emerging intervention and provide a roadmap to validate the effectiveness of wildlife probiotics. We cover the essential use of inert negative controls in trials and the investigation of the probiotic mechanisms of action. We also suggest alternative microbial therapies that could be tested in parallel with the probiotic application. Our recommendations align approaches used for humans, aquaculture, and plants to the emerging concept and use of probiotics for wildlife.

Abstract

Understanding the relation between the meanings of words is an important part of comprehending natural language. Prior work has either focused on analysing lexical semantic relations in word embeddings or probing pretrained language models (PLMs), with some exceptions. Given the rarity of highly multilingual benchmarks, it is unclear to what extent PLMs capture relational knowledge and are able to transfer it across languages. To start addressing this question, we propose MultiLexBATS, a multilingual parallel dataset of lexical semantic relations adapted from BATS in 15 languages including low-resource languages, such as Bambara, Lithuanian, and Albanian. As experiment on cross-lingual transfer of relational knowledge, we test the PLMs' ability to (1) capture analogies across languages, and (2) predict translation targets. We find considerable differences across relation types and languages with a clear preference for hypernymy and antonymy as well as romance languages.
