Objective: Facial paralysis (FP), which resulted from head and neck cancer resection, significantly impacts patients' quality of life. Traditional assessments rely on subjective evaluations and electromyography, whereas functional magnetic resonance imaging offers a noninvasive alternative for enhanced rehabilitation. Acupuncture has shown promise in promoting cerebral cortex reorganization, yet the precise relationship between acupuncture-induced structural and functional changes remains unclear, necessitating further investigation into therapeutic mechanisms., Methods: Fifty-five patients afflicted with FP underwent evaluations using voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) and tract-based spatial statistics and were divided into the acupuncture intervention group (n = 35) and pseudo intervention group (n = 20). Comparative analyses of metrics pre and postintervention were conducted to delineate therapy-induced modifications in acupuncture intervention. The postacupuncture effect between groups to verify the necessity of accurate positioning for the rehabilitation of FP., Results: Patients with FP showed deficits in VMHC in regions of the postcentral, precentral, and parietal areas. Corpus callosum and internal capsule showed significantly increased fractional anisotropy of the white matter skeleton in tract-based spatial statistics after treatment. Comparison postintervention results between groups exhibited deficits in VMHC and increased fractional anisotropy in regions of the corpus callosum in the acupuncture intervention group., Conclusions: Early acupuncture intervention may suppress cortical hyperactivation and restore interhemispheric inhibition across the corpus callosum to inhibit maladaptive structural plasticity. Marmosets are becoming more utilized in biomedical research due to multiple advantages including (1) a nonhuman primate of a smaller size with less cost for housing, (2) physiologic similarities to humans, (3) translatable hepatic metabolism, (4) higher numbers of litters per year, (5) genome is sequenced, molecular reagents are available, (6) immunologically similar to humans, (7) transgenic marmosets with germline transmission have been produced, and (8) are naturally occurring hematopoietic chimeras. With more use of marmosets, disease surveillance over a wide range of ages of marmosets has been performed. This has led to a better understanding of the disease management of spontaneous diseases that can occur in colonies. Knowledge of clinical signs and histologic lesions can assist in maximizing the colony's health, allowing for improved outcomes in translational studies within biomedical research. The claustrum is the most densely interconnected region in the human brain. Despite the accumulating data from clinical and experimental studies, the functional role of the claustrum remains unknown. Here, we systematically review claustrum lesion studies and discuss their functional implications. Claustral lesions are associated with an array of signs and symptoms, including changes in cognitive, perceptual and motor abilities; electrical activity; mental state; and sleep. The wide range of symptoms observed following claustral lesions do not provide compelling evidence to support prominent current theories of claustrum function such as multisensory integration or salience computation. Conversely, the lesions studies support the hypothesis that the claustrum regulates cortical excitability. We argue that the claustrum is connected to, or part of, multiple brain networks that perform both fundamental and higher cognitive functions. As a multifunctional node in numerous networks, this may explain the manifold effects of claustrum damage on brain and behaviour. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The primate cerebral cortex is organized into specialized areas representing different modalities and functions along a continuous surface. The functional maps across the cortex, however, are often investigated a single modality at a time (e.g., audition or vision). To advance our understanding of the complex landscape of primate cortical functions, here we develop a polarization-gated wide-field optical imaging method for measuring cortical functions through the un-thinned intact skull in awake marmoset monkeys (Callithrix jacchus), a primate species featuring a smooth cortex. Using this method, adjacent auditory, visual, and somatosensory cortices are noninvasively parcellated in individual subjects with detailed tonotopy, retinotopy, and somatotopy. An additional pure-tone-responsive tonotopic gradient is discovered in auditory cortex and a face-patch sensitive to motion in the lower-center visual field is localized near an auditory region representing frequencies of conspecific vocalizations. This through-skull landscape-mapping approach provides new opportunities for understanding how the primate cortex is organized and coordinated to enable real-world behaviors.
