Les premiers témoignages d’une organisation du terroir remontent au début du xie s. La présence de templiers à Gréoux étant définitivement jugée fantaisiste, il est possible que la seigneurie ait alors fait partie des alleux des Pontevès, et qu’elle ait été, avant le milieu du xiiie s., une possession d’un seigneur proche des Castellane. Perceptible dès le xiie s., le phénomène de regroupement et de perchement de l’habitat a connu, à cette époque, une phase non fortifiée. Ce n’est qu’au xiiie s. que l’incastellamento est effectif, avec la construction d’un rempart et d’une nouvelle église paroissiale. À partir de la chronologie établie pour le château, trois seigneurs sont susceptibles d’avoir commandé sa construction au xive s. : le comte de Provence, les Hospitaliers et, plus probablement, Arnaud de Trian, après 1324. Le site villageois était déjà organisé, doté d’une population assez importante et d’un terroir avantageux, peu éloigné de la basse Provence. Les descendants d’Arnaud de Trian tinrent la seigneurie jusqu’en 1379, puis elle passa aux mains des Glandevès, des Clapiers, des Audiffret et des Albertas. Ces familles ont, successivement, complété ou adapté les dispositions de la demeure médiévale et ont fait évoluer les confins du domaine qui ont été fixés vers le milieu du xviie s. Peu marqués par les conflits entre catholiques et protestants de la fin du xvie s., les seigneurs de Gréoux ont, en revanche, connu des heurts avec la communauté villageoise à l’Époque moderne. Après la Révolution, le principal et dernier occupant du château fut un certain Arnoux Guibert. Classé en 1840, le château n’a été soustrait aux pillages que récemment, par un programme de restauration réalisé sous l’égide des Monuments historiques. The first evidence of land organisation dates from the early eleventh century. Now that the presence of Templars at Gréoux is no longer generally accepted, it is possible to consider that the domain belonged to the Pontevès family’s ancestral lands, and that before the middle of the thirteenth century, it had been the property of a lord close to the Castellane family. The phenomenon of clustered and hanging habitat appears in the twelfth century, but with no trace of fortification. It was only in the thirteenth century that incastellamento took place, with the construction of a rampart and a new parish church. It is likely, from the dating established for the castle, that one of three lords commissioned its construction in the fourteenth century : the comte de Provence, the Hospitallers or, most probably, Arnaud de Than, after 1324. The village site was already established with a fairly large population, located on good land quite close to Lower Provence. The descendents of Arnaud de Trian held lordship until 1379, after which it passed into the hands of the Glandevès, Clapiers, Audiffret and Albertas families. These families successively completed or changed the layout of the medieval residence and developed the property’s boundaries whose final form was determined towards the middle of the seventeenth century. The lords of Gréoux were little affected by the conflicts between Catholics and Protestants at the end of the sixteenth century but did clash with the village community during the modern period. After the Revolution, the main and last lord occupying the castle was a certain Arnoux Guibert. Listed in 1840, the castle was only recently protected from pillaging by a restoration program carried out under the aegis of the Ancient Monuments Directorate.

Quelques études anciennes s’étaient arrêtées sur les prestigieux sites d’Avignon (Labande 1925) et de Tarascon (Pressouyre 1963), et les travaux d’envergure de G. Démians d’Archimbaud consacrés à Rougiers (Démians d’Archimbaud 1980) ou de M. Fixot sur la campagne d’Apt à Pélissanne (Fixot 1973-74) ...

L’ancienneté de l’occupation de ce terroir, au riche potentiel naturel, a été reconnue à travers les témoins diffus des périodes pré‑ et protohistoriques. L’établissement, dès l’Antiquité, d’une petite agglomération fréquentée par l’aristocratie romaine est bien attesté en vallée, à proximité d’une source thermale. Méconnu aux siècles suivants, le paysage construit ne redevient perceptible qu’au milieu du Moyen Âge, période durant laquelle s’affirment deux pôles d’occupation : d’une part, le site antique avec la paroisse Saint‑Pierre et un cimetière (xiie‑xiiie s.) et, d’autre part, le château établi sur une hauteur avancée du plateau de Valensole, dans la dépendance duquel s’est regroupé l’habitat. Celui‑ci a été doté d’une église paroissiale au xiiie s. et a été enserré dans deux enceintes successives qui en marquent les extensions aux xiiie et xvie s. There is evidence, albeit sparse, that occupation of this land, with its rich natural potential, dates back to the prehistoric and protohistoric periods. À small town is known to have existed in the valley area from Antiquity : located near hot springs, it was frequented by the Roman aristocracy. There is little evidence for further organisation of the landscape before the middle of the medieval period, at which time two centres of occupation appear. The old Roman site is occupied by the parish of Saint Peter and its cemetery (twelfth to thirteenth century) ; the castle and its associated settlement are built on a prominent rise in the Valensole plateau. The settlement was endowed with a parish church in the thirteenth century and was encircled by two successive surrounding walls marking the thirteenth and sixteenth century boundaries of the site.

Édifié sur une position dominante, le château et sa basse‑cour sont isolés du village par une enceinte. Cet espace fortifié a connu, à différentes époques, des modifications qui ont contribué, notamment au xvie s., à renforcer ses qualités défensives, puis l’ont transformé en un lieu à vocation plus utilitaire et d’agrément. Dans l’enceinte, s’élève la demeure seigneuriale, vaste parallélépipède organisé autour de l’espace de la cour intérieure. Une lecture globale de l’architecture permet de définir les grandes phases d’édification, dont la plus importante est celle qui, au xive s., a vu la structuration de l’édifice sur cour. L’examen des techniques de construction et l’analyse des documents d’archives contribuent à préciser cette chronologie, tout en révélant la présence de structures aujourd’hui disparues. L’entrée principale de la demeure seigneuriale, un porche voûté surmonté d’une salle de herse, a été établie dans le corps de bâtiment septentrional. Au xive s., les pièces se répartissaient sur deux niveaux qui ont été subdivisés à l’Époque moderne. Marquant la silhouette de l’édifice, le volume de plan carré en demi hors œuvre de la tour nord‑ouest se développe sur trois niveaux couronnés par une terrasse. Peu modifiée dans sa structure, cette tour –référence est ici faite aux donjons de pierre– n’a reçu que tardivement des aménagements qui ont surtout concerné le système de communication à ses différents niveaux. Contemporaine de la tour nord‑ouest et du corps de bâtiment nord, l’aile occidentale apparaît postérieure à l’aile méridionale. Ses dispositions assez simples, considérablement oblitérées par les travaux modernes et contemporains, restent en partie restituables. Édifié en 1625, à l’angle des corps de bâtiment ouest et sud, l’ensemble sud‑ouest occupe une surface demeurée curieusement non construite jusqu’à cette date. Il comprend, au premier niveau, deux espaces exigus oblongs voûtés, et, au second, une terrasse crénelée. C’est dans le corps de bâtiment méridional du château qu’ont été retrouvées les plus anciennes élévations correspondant à une église du xiie s., à la fois tournée vers le bourg et associée, au nord, à un premier complexe castrai. La campagne de reconstruction du xive s. l’a intégrée au corps de bâtiment sud. Cette aile a alors été structurée sur trois niveaux qui ont été modifiés à l’Époque moderne. Également compris dans le programme de construction du xive s., le corps de bâtiment oriental était dévolu, dans ses parties basses, aux communs. Comme l’aile sud, son volume intérieur a subi d’importants réaménagements qui ont subdivisé les grandes salles médiévales en espaces plus petits. La tour nord‑est a été édifiée dans la seconde moitié du xvie s. pour appuyer les défenses du château, mais elle fut transformée en pigeonnier dès le début du xviie s. L’espace central de la cour intérieure, abritant une citerne, assurait la distribution de la demeure. Dans la première moitié du xve s., un ensemble monumental, composé de deux niveaux superposés de galeries planchéiées, a été aménagé le long des quatre façades sur cour. On accédait à ces galeries par un escalier de pierre établi dans l’angle sud‑est. The castle and its bailey were built on a site overlooking the village and separated from it by a surrounding wall. This fortified area underwent changes at different periods which were intended, particularly in the sixteenth century, to strengthen its defenses. Later transformations were designed either to embellish the area or to render it more functional. The seigniorial residence, built inside the enclosure, formed an enormous parallelepiped organized around the area of the inner courtyard. An overall reading of the architecture makes it possible to define the castle’s main construction phases. During the most important of these, in the fourteenth century, the building was laid out around a courtyard. An examination of building techniques and the analysis of archival documents have contributed to more precise dating, while at the same time revealing the existence of structures which have today disappeared. The main entrance to the seigniorial residence, a vaulted porch topped by a portcullis room, was placed in the north building. In the fourteenth century, rooms were laid out on two floors which were subdivided in modern times. The building’s outline is punctuated by the northwest tower, whose semi‑projecting, square‑planned volume comprises three levels, crowned by a terrace. The tower –an architectural echo of stone keeps– has received few structural modifications. Later internal alterations mainly involved the communication system between the different floors. Contemporary to the northwest tower and the north side of the building, the west wing appears to be later than the south wing. Its fairly straightforward layout, considerably obliterated by modern and contemporary works, can still be partly reconstructed. Built in 1625, at the junction of the south and west buildings, the southwest complex occupies an area that, for some reason, until this time had not been built upon. On the first level there are two narrow, oblong vaulted areas and, on the second, a crenelated terrace. The oldest elevations have been found in the castle’s south building and correspond to a twelfth century church, which faced the village and was connected, to the north, to the original castle complex. The fourteenth century rebuilding campaign incorporated it into the castle’s south building. At that point, this wing was built on three levels that were altered in modern times. Also part of the fourteenth century building program, the ground floor of the east building was used for domestic activities. Like the south wing, its interior later underwent major alterations which subdivided the large medieval halls into smaller spaces. The northeast tower was put up in the second half of the sixteenth century to reinforce the castle’s defenses, but it was converted into a dovecot early in the seventeenth century. The central area of the inner courtyard, which had a water tank at its centre, was the residence’s main thoroughfare. During the first half of the fifteenth century, a monumental structure composed of two superimposed levels of planked galleries was built against the four façades facing into the courtyard. These galleries were reached by a stone staircase in the southeast corner.

Depuis quelques décennies, l’industrie thermale et tout ce qu’elle sous-entend d’installations hôtelières et d’accueil, ont métamorphosé le terroir grysélien, débordant largement les limites du bourg médiéval et moderne et lui opposant un tissu urbain lâche et éparpillé. C’est autour de ces mêmes eaux thermales que, dès l’Antiquité, s’était fixée une population, en ces lieux. Cette période n’a été évoquée, au cours de l’étude, qu’au travers des découvertes archéologiques qui ont pu l’illustre...

Établi au cœur de la Provence, sur un site dont les eaux thermales furent exploitées dès l’époque gallo-romaine, le château de Gréoux-les-Bains domine de sa puissante silhouette un village qui conserve, dans son parcellaire et son architecture, les traces de son évolution au cours du Moyen-Âge et de l’Époque moderne. Sandrine Claude tente ici, par une analyse conjointe des sources d’archives, des données ponctuelles de fouilles et des vestiges monumentaux - avec une approche systématique relevant de l’archéologie du bâti - , de répondre à la problématique posée par les origines et les ambitions qui ont présidé à la réalisation d’un château démesuré par rapport à ton contexte géographique et humain. Ainsi sont retracées l’histoire - jusqu’à présent méconnue - du château, replacé dans son environnement peuplé, celle de ses commanditaires et de ses propriétaires successifs, ainsi que l’évolution architecturale de l’édifice. The Château de Gréoux-les-Bains was built in the heart of Provence on a site which had been used from early Roman times for its hot springs. The castle’s powerful outline dominates the village whose organisation and architecture has preserved evidence of its development from the Middle Ages to the modern period. In the present work, Sandrine Claude combines analysis of archival sources, selected excavation data and standing remains - making particular use of building archeology - to determine the origins and ambitions that presided over the building of a castle whose size is disproportionate to its geographical and human context. The castle’s little known history and its architectural development are thus retraced and the monument placed in its human environment, that of its commissioners and successive owners.

Cinq grandes phases ont jalonné l’histoire architecturale du château, entre le xiie s. et l’époque contemporaine. Le souvenir de la première est gardé par l’église de l’aile sud et par les témoins archéologiques d’une occupation résidentielle durant le xiiie s. ; les phases suivantes ont été marquées par la reconstruction du château au xive s., par l’aménagement de la cour au xve s. et, à partir du xvie s., par les renforcements militaires et les aménagements intérieurs. Enfin, après la Révolution, le château a été laissé à l’abandon et a souffert de nombreuses déprédations. Seule une identification globale des fonctions des différentes parties du château peut être proposée. Elle met particulièrement en lumière la charge symbolique très forte des galeries, du grand escalier et de la tour nord‑ouest. Issu de la diffusion des innovations de l’architecture gothique dans les régions méridionales au xiiie s., le château seigneurial de Gréoux reste atypique, en Provence, par la régularité et surtout par l’ampleur de son programme. Sa filiation architecturale avec les grandes résidences urbaines est très marquée. Five main phases marked the castle’s architectural history, from the twelfth century to the contemporary period. The first phase is represented by the church in the south wing and by archaeological evidence of residential occupation during the thirteenth century. Subsequent phases were marked by the rebuilding of the castle in the fourteenth century, by the creation of the courtyard in the fifteenth century and, from the sixteenth century on, by military additions and work on the interior. Finally, after the Revolution, the castle was abandoned and suffered much damage. The functions of the various parts of the castle can only be identified in a general way. In particular, attention has been drawn to the galleries, the grand staircase and the northwest tower, with its‑very strong symbolic significance. The seigniorial castle at Gréoux, ‑created as a result of the thirteenth century spread of Gothic architectural innovations to southern regions, remains atypical, in Provence, with respect to the orderliness and sheer size of its architectural programme.
