We study the transport properties of underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ with doping level p = 0.10–0.12 in magnetic field up to 88 T. We report for the first time in a cuprate superconductor a dramatic change of the quantum oscillation spectrum versus temperature, which is accompanied by a sign change of the Hall effect below T ≈10 K. Based on numerical simulations, we infer a Fermi surface reconstruction in the inner plane from an antiferromagnetic state (hole pockets) to a biaxial charge density wave state (electron pockets). We show that both orders compete and share the same hotspots of the Fermi surface, and we discuss our result in the context of spin-fermion models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multilayered cuprates possess not only the highest superconducting temperature transition but also offer a unique platform to study disorder-free CuO2 planes and the interplay between competing orders with superconductivity. Here, we study the underdoped trilayer cuprate HgBa2Ca2Cu3O8+δ and we report quantum oscillation and Hall effect measurements in magnetic field up to 88 T. A careful analysis of the complex spectra of quantum oscillations strongly supports the coexistence of an antiferromagnetic order in the inner plane and a charge order in the outer planes. The presence of an ordered antiferromagnetic metallic state that extends deep in the superconducting phase is a key ingredient that supports magnetically mediated pairing interaction in cuprates. The interplay between superconductivity and competing orders in multi-layered cuprates can shed light on the nature of the superconducting pairing. Purpose: This study aimed to develop and validate a Monte Carlo (MC) model for the Papillon+ contact x-ray brachytherapy (CXB) device, producing 50 kilovolt (kV) X-rays, specifically focusing on its application with a 25 mm diameter rectal applicator for contact therapy., Material and Methods: The validation process involved depth dose and transverse dose profile measurements using EBT3 gafchromic films positioned in a plastic water low energy range phantom. The half-value layer (HVL) was further measured and derived from the simulated X-ray spectra., Results: Excellent agreement within ±2% was achieved between the measured and simulated on-axis depth dose curves for the 25 mm rectal applicator. Transverse dose profile measurements showed a high level of agreement between the simulation and measurements, on average 3.1% in contact with the applicator at the surface of the phantom and on average 1.7% at 10 mm depth. A close agreement within 5.5% was noticed concerning the HVL between the measurement and simulation. The simulated gamma spectra and 2D-dose distribution demonstrated a soft X-ray energy spectrum and a uniform dose distribution in contact with the applicator., Conclusions: An MC model was successfully developed for the Papillon+ eBT device with a 25 mm diameter rectal applicator. Spontaneous isolated dissection of the superior mesenteric artery (SIDSMA) is a rare condition, particularly when complicated by hemorrhagic shock. This case report describes the discovery of SIDSMA in an 88-year-old woman through CT angiography. The patient initially presented with acute abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea, which later progressed to hemorrhagic shock. Objective: This study evaluates a compact Monte Carlo (MC) model of a pencil beam scanning clinical proton beam using TOPAS to estimate the dose out-of-field (OOF). Compact modelling means that the model starts from a pristine proton beam at the nozzle exit, customised based on acceptance and commissioning data, instead of modelling the full treatment head and room. Approach : First, in-field validation tests were performed. Then, the OOF dose was validated in an RW3 phantom with bubble detectors for personal neutron dosimetry (measuring the neutron dose equivalent) and thermoluminiescent detectors (measuring the absorbed dose by protons and gammas). Measurements were performed at 15 and 35 cm from the distal edge of the field for five different irradiation plans, covering different beam orientations, proton energies and a 40 mm range shifter. TOPAS simulations were performed with QGSP Binary Cascade HP (BIC) and QGSP Bertini HP (Bertini) hadron physics lists. Main results : In-field validation shows that MC simulations agree with point dose measurements within -2.5 % and +1.5 % at locations on- and off-axis and before, in and after the Bragg peak or plateau. The gamma passing rate 2%/3mm of four simulated treatment plans compared to the dose distribution calculated by the TPS exceeds 97 % agreement score. OOF dose simulations showed an average overestimation of 27 % of the neutron dose equivalent for the BIC hadron physics list and an average underestimation of 20 % for the Bertini hadron physics list. The simulated absorbed dose of protons and gammas showed a systematic underestimation which was on average 21 % and 51 % for BIC and Bertini respectively. Significance : Our study demonstrates that a compact MC model can reliably produce in-field data, while out-of-field dose data are within the uncertainties of the detector systems and MC simulations nuclear models, and do so with shorter modelling and faster calculation time., (© 2023 Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.)

More than twenty years ago, multiferroic compounds combining in particular magnetism and ferroelectricity were rediscovered. Since then, BiFeO_{3} has emerged as the most outstanding multiferroic by combining at room temperature almost all the fundamental or applicative properties that may be desired: electroactive spin wave excitations called electromagnons, conductive domain walls, or a low band gap of interest for magnonic devices. All these properties have so far only been discontinuously strain engineered in thin films according to the lattice parameter imposed by the substrate. Here we explore the ferroelectricity and the dynamic magnetic response of BiFeO_{3} bulk under continuously tunable uniaxial strain. Using elasto-Raman spectroscopy, we show that the ferroelectric soft mode is strongly enhanced under tensile strain and driven by the volume preserving deformation at low strain. The magnonic response is entirely modified with low energy magnon modes being suppressed for tensile strain above pointing out a transition from a cycloid to an homogeneous magnetic state. Effective Hamiltonian calculations show that the ferroelectric and the antiferrodistortive modes compete in the tensile regime. In addition, the homogeneous antiferromagnetic state becomes more stable compared to the cycloidal state above a +2% tensile strain close to the experimental value. Finally, we reveal the ferroelectric and magnetic orders of BiFeO_{3} under uniaxial strain and how the tensile strain allows us to unlock and to modify in a differentiated way the polarization and the magnetic structure.

We report on the formation of topological defects emerging from the cycloidal antiferromagnetic order at the surface of bulk BiFeO_{3} crystals. Combining reciprocal and real-space magnetic imaging techniques, we first observe, in a single ferroelectric domain, the coexistence of antiferromagnetic domains in which the antiferromagnetic cycloid propagates along different wave vectors. We then show that the direction of these wave vectors is not strictly locked to the preferred crystallographic axes as continuous rotations bridge different wave vectors. At the junctions between the magnetic domains, we observe topological line defects identical to those found in a broad variety of lamellar physical systems with rotational symmetries. Our work establishes the presence of these magnetic objects at room temperature in the multiferroic antiferromagnet BiFeO_{3}, offering new possibilities for their use in spintronics.

This paper presents a study of the lattice dynamics in BaFe 2 Se 3 . We combined first-principle calculations, infrared measurements and a thorough symmetry analysis. Our study confirms that Pnma cannot be the space group of BaFe 2 Se 3 , even at room temperature. The phonons assignment requires Pm to be the BaFe 2 Se 3 space group, not only in the magnetic phase, but also in the paramagnetic phase at room temperature. This is due to a strong coupling between a short-range spin-order along the ladders, and the lattice degrees of freedom associated with the Fe-Fe bond length. This coupling induces a change in the bond-length pattern from an alternated trapezoidal one (as in Pnma ) to an alternated small/large rectangular one. Out of the two patterns, only the latter is fully compatible with the observed block-type magnetic structure.
