1. Ensuring Transient Stability with Guaranteed Region of Attraction in DC Microgrids

Abstract

DC microgrids have promising applications in renewable integration due to their better energy efficiency when connecting DC components. However, they might be unstable since many loads in a DC microgrid are regulated as constant power loads (CPLs) that have a destabilizing negative impedance effect. As a result, the state trajectory displacement caused by abrupt load changes or contingencies can easily lead to instability. Many existing works have been devoted to studying the region of attraction (ROA) of a DC microgrid, in which the system is guaranteed to be asymptotically stable. Nevertheless, existing work either focuses on using numerical methods for ROA approximations that generally have no performance guarantees or cannot ensure a desired ROA for a general DC microgrid. To close this gap, this paper develops an innovative control synthesis algorithm to make a general DC microgrid have a theoretically guaranteed ROA, for example, to cover the entirety of its operating range regarding state trajectories. We first study the nonlinear dynamics of a DC microgrid to derive a novel transient stability condition to rigorously certify whether a given operating range is a subset of the ROA; then, we formulate a control synthesis optimization problem to guarantee the condition's satisfaction. This condition is a linear constraint, and the optimization problem resembles an optimal power flow problem and has a good computational behavior. 44. Distribution Market Including Prosumers: An Equilibrium Analysis

Abstract

We consider a distribution system including a supplying utility, prosumers, and conventional consumers, interacting through a distribution market. In such a market, each prosumer, seeking its maximum profit, uses an optimization problem to determine its hourly production/consumption, and the distribution market operator uses a minimum social-cost problem from which hourly locational marginal prices (LMPs) are derived. Conventional consumers accept these prices and the supplying utility sell energy at given prices at the substation bus. Since these problems (those of the prosumers and the one of the operator) are interdependent, they need to be jointly considered and solved, which constitutes an equilibrium problem. We show that such equilibrium problem is equivalent to an optimization one, solve it, and analyze outcomes using a realistic distribution system. We extract conclusions of the potential impact of this distribution market on the financial outcomes of the utility, the prosumers and the conventional consumers.

45. Robust Capacity Planning for Project Management.

Abstract

We consider a significant problem that arises in the planning of many projects. Project companies often use outsourced providers that require capacity reservations that must be contracted before task durations are realized. We model these decisions for a company that, given partially characterized distributional information, assumes the worst-case distribution for task durations. Once task durations are realized, the project company makes decisions about fast tracking and outsourced crashing, to minimize the total capacity reservation, fast tracking, crashing, and makespan penalty costs. We model the company's objective using the target-based measure of minimizing an underperformance riskiness index. We allow for correlation in task performance, and for piecewise linear costs of crashing and makespan penalties. An optimal solution of the discrete, nonlinear model is possible for small to medium size projects. We compare the performance of our model against the best available benchmarks from the robust optimization literature, and show that it provides lower risk and greater robustness to distributional information. Our work thus enables more effective risk minimization in projects, and provides insights about how to make more robust capacity reservation decisions. Summary of Contribution: This work studies a financially significant planning problem that arises in project management. Companies that face uncertainties in project execution may need to reserve capacity with outsourced providers. Given that decision, they further need to plan their operational decisions to protect against a bad outcome. We model and solve this problem via adjustable distributionally robust optimization. While this problem involves two-stage decision making, which is computationally challenging in general, we develop a computationally efficient algorithm to find the exact optimal solution for instances of practical size.
