Abstract

With the global rise in populism over the last decade, there has been an increase in political commentaries (PC) by leaders that criticize their central banks and argue for lower interest rates. We analyse the effects of PCs on exchange rates, bond yields, and the risk premium for six countries that are subject to political pressures. Utilizing a specification with time‐varying parameters, we show that PCs affect the level and the volatility of exchange rates, bond yields and the risk premium in Turkey. The response increases over time. In other countries, there is a significant impact on exchange rate volatility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Has the Financial Crisis affected the Real Interest Rate Dynamics in Europe?

Abstract

We investigate the effects of the financial crisis on the stationarity of real interest rates for a group of Euro area countries. We use a new unit root test developed by Pesaran et al. (J Econom 115(1): 53–74, 2013) that allows for multiple unobserved factors in a panel set up. In this multifactor framework, we make use of a number of additional variables such as the stock price volatility and monetary policy expectations that are assumed to share common factors with the real interest rate. Based on recursive (Pesaran et al. 2013) test statistics, our results suggest that while short-term and long-term real interest rates were stationary before the financial crisis, they became non-stationary during the crisis period. Robustness analysis shows that the results are not sensitive to the use of ex-post real interest rates versus ex-ante real interest rates.

Abstract

Objective: this study considered the role of institutional, cultural and economic factors in the effectivemess of lockdown measures during the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier studies focusing on cross-sectional data found an association between low case numbers and a higher level of cultural tightness. Meanwhile, institutional strength and income levels revealed a puzzling negative relationship with the number of cases and deaths. Methods: data available at the end of September 2021 were used to analyse the dynamic impact of these factors on the effectiveness of lockdowns. The cross-sectional dimension of country-level data was combined with the time-series dimension of pandemic-related measures, using econometric techniques dealing with panel data. Findings: greater stringency of lockdown measures was associated with fewer cases. Institutional strength enhanced this negative relationship. Countries with well-defined and established laws performed better for a given set of lockdown measures compared with countries with weaker institutional structures. Cultural tightness reduced the effectiveness of lockdowns, in contrast to previous findings at cross-sectional level. Conclusion: institutional strength plays a greater role than cultural and economic factors in enhancing the performance of lockdowns.
