Abstract Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a well‐studied illness defined by clinical features (e.g., headache and nausea), as assessed by the Lake Louise score (LLS). Although obvious in its severe form, early stages of AMS are poorly defined and easily confused with common travel‐related conditions. Measurement of hypoxaemia, the cause of AMS, should be helpful, yet to date its utility for identifying AMS susceptibility remains unclear. This study quantified altitude‐induced hypoxaemia in individuals during an ascent to 4800 m to determine the utility of nocturnal pulse oximetry measurements for prediction of AMS. Eighteen individuals (36 ± 16 years of age) ascended to 4800 m over 12 days. Symptomology of AMS was assessed each morning via LLS criteria, with participants categorized as either AMS‐positive (LLS ≥ 3 with headache) or AMS‐negative. Overnight peripheral oxygen saturations (ov‐SpO2) were recorded continuously (1 Hz) using portable oximeters. Derivatives of these recordings were compared between AMS‐positive and ‐negative subjects (Mann–Whitney U‐test). Abstract Background The number of children who require palliative care has been estimated to be as high as 21 million globally. Delivering effective children’s palliative care (CPC) services requires accurate population-level information on current and future CPC need, but quantifying need is hampered by challenges in defining the population in need, and by limited available data. The objective of this paper is to summarise how population-level CPC need is defined, and quantified, in the literature. Methods Scoping review performed in line with Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Six online databases (CINAHL, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline, PsycINFO, and Web of Science), and grey literature, were searched. Inclusion criteria: literature published in English; 2008–2023 (Oct); including children aged 0–19 years; focused on defining and/or quantifying population-level need for palliative care. Results Three thousand five hundred seventy-eight titles and abstracts initially reviewed, of which, 176 full-text studies were assessed for eligibility. Overall, 51 met the inclusion criteria for this scoping review. No universal agreement identified on how CPC need was defined in population-level policy and planning discussions. In practice, four key definitions of CPC need were found to be commonly applied in quantifying population-level need: (1) ACT/RCPCH (Association for Children with Life-Threatening or Terminal Conditions and their Families, and the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health) groups; (2) The ‘Directory’ of Life-Limiting Conditions; (3) ‘List of Life-Limiting Conditions’; and (4) ‘Complex Chronic Conditions’. In most cases, variations in data availability drove the methods used to quantify population-level CPC need and only a small proportion of articles incorporated measures of complexity of CPC need. Conclusion Overall, greater consistency in how CPC need is defined for policy and planning at a population-level is important, but with sufficient flexibility to allow for regional variations in epidemiology, demographics, and service availability. Improvements in routine data collection of a wide range of care complexity factors could facilitate estimation of population-level CPC need and ensure greater alignment with how need for CPC is defined at the individual-level in the clinical setting.

Abstract Based on plasma observations from Juno's Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment instrument and forward modeling, we investigate the dawn‐dusk asymmetries within Jupiter's magnetosphere between 10 and 40 RJ. On the dawnside, the flux tubes are depleted characterized by low density and near rigid‐corotation velocity, with a low temperature and thin plasma sheet. On the duskside, the flux tubes are assimilated characterized by high density and sub‐corotation velocity, with a hotter and thicker plasma sheet. Super‐corotating hot inflows originating from reconnection events are identified in the pre‐dawn sector. These observations are consistent with the Vasyliūnas cycle, suggesting it operates in a region closer to Jupiter than previous studies suggested. Outflows are locally coupled with swept‐back magnetic fields and are frequently observed near midnight. Inflows are locally coupled with swept‐forward fields with higher temperatures. The discernible temperature difference between inflows and outflows reveals their distinct origins. Plasma beta increases with radial distance, suggesting increased instabilities at larger distances.

Abstract Background Nursing homes and other long-term care services account for a disparate share of COVID-19 cases and casualties worldwide. During COVID-19 there is a distinct need to preserve a holistic view of the wellbeing of residents of nursing homes, be mindful of their rights as citizens, and to be aware of protecting residents from infection. The delivery of health and social care throughout a pandemic must remain person-centred and adhere to a human rights-based approach. Methods This study aimed to capture nursing home residents, their families and staff’s perspective of the nursing homes residents experience, approaches of staff and the nursing home environment. An online survey was distributed via stakeholder networks and online platforms across Ireland. This study was performed and reported in line with the Consensus-Based Checklist for Reporting of Survey Studies (CROSS). Results 25 residents, 42 family members and 51 staff completed the survey (n = 118). Across the domains measured all but one aspect scored above 50% (residents get up and go to bed when they want 41.5%) with the highest score of 89.1% scored for the nursing home is comfortable and well-kept. Results highlight evidence of positive experiences and endeavours to preserve social connections, residents were in a safe place cared for by staff who did their best in a difficult position and who went above and beyond their duty of care. However, some families reported poor communication, no internet connections, not enough phones or tablets, and that staff were busy and unable at times to assist residents who needed help using phones/tablets. Conclusion This study highlights the importance of human rights and how they ought to inform and shape the advancement of public health advice and policy documents. Overall, nursing home residents, their families and staff reported favourably on the study measures. However, issues pertaining to communication are essential and there is a need to address issues such as the provision of accurate timely information, communication infrastructure and resources, and inconsistencies in communications. Of note is that while healthcare professionals have a duty to uphold the rights of nursing home residents, they themselves have human rights which must also be protected and supported.

Abstract Jupiter's magnetosphere exhibits notable distinctions from the terrestrial magnetosphere. The structure and dynamics of Jupiter's dawnside magnetosphere can be characterized as a competition between internally driven sunward flow and solar wind‐driven tailward flow. During the prime mission, Juno acquired extensive data from dawn to midnight, sampling the magnetodisc and higher latitude regions. Numerical moments from the Jovian Auroral Distributions Experiment (JADE‐I) plasma (ion) instrument revealed a mid‐latitude region of anticorotational (−vϕ) flow. While the magnitude of the flow is subject to uncertainty due to low count rates in these rarefied regions, we demonstrate in the raw JADE‐I data that the sign of vϕ is a robust measurement. Global Grid Agnostic Magnetohydrodyamics for Extended Research Applications simulations show a similar region of strongly reduced flow in proximity to open field lines. Additionally, we use Jupiter Energetic‐particle Detector Instrument integral moments to determine the Hen+/H+ ratio (where n refers to He+ or He++) and show that a transition to solar wind‐like composition occurs in the same region as the anticorotational flow. We conclude that the global simulations are consistent with the Juno data, where the simulations show a crescent of open magnetic flux that is bounded by the magnetodisc and a closed high‐latitude polar region (nominally the polar cap), which is never observed in the terrestrial magnetosphere. The distinct distribution of open flux in Jupiter's dawnside magnetosphere suggests the significance of planetary rotation and may represent a characteristic feature of rotating giant magnetospheres for future exploration.

The magnetospheric systems of ice giants, as the ideal and the unique template of a typical class of exoplanets, have not been sufficiently studied in the past decade. The complexity of these asymmetric and extremely dynamic magnetospheres provides us a great chance to systematically investigate the general mechanism of driving the magnetospheres of such common exoplanets in the Universe, and the key factors of influencing the global and local magnetospheric structures of this type of planets. In this paper, we discuss the science return of probing magnetospheric systems of ice giants for the future missions, throughout different magnetospheric regions, across from the interaction with upstream solar wind to the downstream region of the magnetotail. We emphasize the importance of detecting the magnetospheric systems of ice giants in the next decades, which enables us to deeply understand the space enviroNMent and habitability of not only the ice giants themselves but also the analogous exoplanets which are widely distributed in the Universe.

Abstract The Jovian magnetosphere is highly dynamic, influenced by both solar wind and internal processes associated with the rapid planetary rotation and Io's volcanic activities. Accompanying the mass and energy circulations driven by the magnetospheric dynamics, the magnetic configuration also changes dramatically. One of the crucial parameters to characterize the magnetic configuration is magnetic field line curvature (FLC), which generally describes how stretched the field line is. The curvature is pivotal to influence particle behaviors, for example, pitch angle scattering which may lead to auroral particle precipitation. In this work, a method is proposed to investigate the real‐time magnetic FLC in Jovian current sheet using the magnetic field data from the Juno spacecraft. The results indicate that the FLC scattering of ions and relativistic electrons are common in Jovian magnetosphere, providing a crucial insight to understand the particle behaviors.

Abstract Jupiter's auroral emission is a spectacular phenomenon that provides insight into energy release processes related to the coupling of its magnetosphere and ionosphere. This energy release is influenced by solar wind conditions. Using joint observations from Juno and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), we statistically investigate the relationship between auroral power and current sheet variations under different solar wind conditions. In this study, we reveal that during global main auroral brightening events that are closely connected to solar wind compressions, the dawn side current sheet is substantially thinner than during times when a quiet auroral morphology is present. Furthermore, the total current intensity in the current sheet is found to increase under solar wind compression conditions compared to the quiet period. These findings provide important observational evidence for how magnetospheric dynamics driven by solar wind behavior affect auroral activity, deepening our understanding of the coupling between Jupiter's magnetosphere and ionosphere.

In this study, we employ the Grid Agnostic Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) for Extended Research Applications (GAMERA), a high-resolving-power, three-dimensional global MHD model, to simulate magnetotail reconnection in Jupiter's magnetosphere. While previous satellite observations have provided initial statistics on magnetotail reconnection properties at Jupiter, they have been limited in spacetime coverage, leaving the dynamic process of Jovian magnetotail reconnection and its response to the solar wind (SW) poorly understood. Using MHD simulations, we quantitatively analyze the temporal evolution and spatial dependence of nightside reconnection in Jupiter's magnetotail under ideal quiet and enhanced SW conditions. Our results demonstrate that magnetotail reconnection tends to occur in the midnight and postmidnight sectors, with a low occurrence in the premidnight sector, consistent with both Galileo and Juno observations and predictions by Delamere & Bagenal. The magnetic local time (MLT)–radial distribution of magnetotail reconnection is broad, indicating that Jovian magnetotail reconnection is always dynamic rather than steady state. Enhanced SW ram pressure can decrease the MLT coverage of magnetotail reconnection by compressing Jupiter's magnetosphere. However, the occurrence of magnetotail reconnection near the midnight and postmidnight sectors is enhanced by SW compression beyond 60 R _J , but is not significantly impacted by SW compression within 60 R _J . Conversely, SW compression suppresses reconnection in the premidnight sector, leading to a stronger dawn–dusk asymmetry in the occurrence and location of magnetotail reconnection. This study validates the applicability of the GAMERA code for simulating Jupiter’s magnetosphere and provides complementary insights into the dynamic structure and the SW response of Jupiter’s magnetosphere.

TRPM3 belongs to the melastatin sub-family of transient receptor potential (TRPM) cation channels and has been shown to function as a steroid-activated, heat-sensitive calcium ion (Ca2+) channel. A missense substitution (p.I65M) in the TRPM3 gene of humans (TRPM3) and mice (Trpm3) has been shown to underlie an inherited form of early-onset, progressive cataract. Here, we model the pathogenetic effects of this cataract-causing mutation using ‘knock-in’ mutant mice and human cell lines. Trpm3 and its intron-hosted micro-RNA gene (Mir204) were strongly co-expressed in the lens epithelium and other non-pigmented and pigmented ocular epithelia. Homozygous Trpm3-mutant lenses displayed elevated cytosolic Ca2+ levels and an imbalance of sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) ions coupled with increased water content. Homozygous TRPM3-mutant human lens epithelial (HLE-B3) cell lines and Trpm3-mutant lenses exhibited increased levels of phosphorylated mitogen-activated protein kinase 1/extracellular signal-regulated kinase 2 (MAPK1/ERK2/p42) and MAPK3/ERK1/p44. Mutant TRPM3-M65 channels displayed an increased sensitivity to external Ca2+ concentration and an altered dose response to pregnenolone sulfate (PS) activation. Trpm3-mutant lenses shared the downregulation of genes involved in insulin/peptide secretion and the upregulation of genes involved in Ca2+ dynamics. By contrast, Trpm3-deficient lenses did not replicate the pathophysiological changes observed in Trpm3-mutant lenses. Collectively, our data suggest that a cataract-causing substitution in the TRPM3 cation channel elicits a deleterious gain-of-function rather than a loss-of-function mechanism in the lens.

Abstract It is generally believed that variations in the upstream solar wind (SW) and interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions are the main cause of changes of Jupiter's magnetopause (JM) location. However, most previous pressure balance models for the JM are axisymmetric and do not consider internal drivers, for example, the dynamics of the magnetodisc. We use three‐dimensional global magnetosphere simulations to investigate the variation of the JM under constant SW/IMF conditions. These simulations show that even without variations in the upstream driving conditions, the JM can exhibit dynamic variations, suggesting a range as large as 50 Jupiter radii in the subsolar location. Our study shows that the interchange structures in the Jovian magnetodisc will introduce significant radial dynamic pressure, which can drive significant variation in the JM location. The results provide important new context for interpreting the JM location and dynamics, with key implications for other internally mass‐loaded and/or rapidly rotating systems.

Abstract We show the possible existence of a significant axial asymmetry in the reconnection separator at the Jovian magnetopause using first‐principle, physics‐based global simulations. Under eastward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) conditions near Jupiter's orbit, reconnection occurs at the southern‐dusk and northern magnetopause with large shear angles between the magnetospheric and magnetosheath magnetic fields. When driven by the westward IMF, the reconnection position switches to the northern‐dusk and southern magnetopause. Component reconnection at the southern‐dusk/northern‐dusk magnetopause is associated with the interaction of the IMF with the nearly‐dipolar background fields. Nearly‐antiparallel reconnection near the noon‐midnight plane at the northern/southern magnetopause is related to the dawn‐dusk asymmetric, helical, closed lobe magnetic fields, which is a consequence of significant planetary corotation effects and not expected at Earth. Such configuration is testable as Juno has proceeded its orbit to the high‐altitude cusps and provides new insight into the interpretation of measurements from other rotationally‐driven systems.

Abstract Dysregulation of ion flux across membranes and glutamate-induced excitotoxicity appear to be important pathophysiologic abnormalities in bipolar illness. Understanding ion control and responses to ionic stress is important to decipher the pathogenesis of this disorder. Monensin alone significantly increased [Na]i in ONPs from bipolar individuals (5.08 ± 0.71 vs baseline 3.13 ± 0.93, P = 0.03) and AP5 had no effect (2.0 ± 1.2 vs baseline 3.13 ± 0.93, P = 0.27). However, the combination of AP5 and monensin resulted in normalization of [Na]i (3.25 ± 1.28 vs baseline 3.13 ± 0.93, P = 0.89). This effect was not observed in cells from non-bipolar individuals (monensin alone, 1.72 ± 1.10 vs baseline 2.42 ± 1.80, P = 0.25; AP5 alone, 1.37 ± 0.74 vs baseline 2.42 ± 1.80; AP5 combined with monensin, 1.53 ± 0.98 vs baseline 2.42 ± 1.80, P = 0.31). Sodium regulation is central to neuronal function and may be disturbed in patients with bipolar disorder. Monensin is an ionophore, meaning that it incorporates itself into the membrane and allows sodium to enter independent of cellular membrane proteins. While the mechanism remains obscure, the observation that the NMDA receptor antagonist, AP5, normalizes [Na]i only in olfactory neuroepithelial precursors obtained from bipolar illness may provide novel insights into ion regulation in tissues from subjects with bipolar illness.

Active plasma experiments can be used to strongly perturb the space plasma environment. During the early phase of a chemical release (e.g., few to several seconds), the injected plasma cloud can excite a variety of waves rather than acting as "inert" tracer particles. It is during this early phase of the release that fundamental plasma processes can be studied. For example, the Trigger [Holmgren et al., J. Geophys. Res. 85, 5043 (1980)] and recent KINetic-scale Energy and momentum Transport eXperiment (KiNET-X) missions were both designed to study processes related to auroral electron energization. Early experiments relied primarily on ground-based optics to diagnose the plasma interaction. Advances in optical sensors have dramatically improved imaging capability of both the ion and neutral components of the injected cloud; therefore, optics remain an important part of these types of experiments. However, advances in plasma (fields and particles) instruments have enabled a new generation of possible experiments from the sounding rocket platform. In this article, we discuss previous sounding rocket (and orbital) active experiments, the related science objectives, and an overview of select results from the KiNET-X rocket mission. Specifically, KiNET-X produced an Alfvénic perturbation, a variety of high frequency waves, energized thermal electrons, and produced a field-aligned electron beam of ∼ 200 eV. The findings highlight the potential for overnight oximetry to predict AMS susceptibility during ascent to high altitude. Further investigation is required to develop, evaluate and optimize predictive models to improve AMS management and prevention. Context. Dayside magnetodisc reconnection is a unique process that may occur in rapidly rotating magnetospheres with internal plasma sources, and it is not expected at Earth. Several observations suggest that dayside magnetodisc reconnection could be driven in the Kronian magnetosphere. This raises the question as to whether it can occur at Jupiter, the fastest rotating planet in the Solar System. Recent reports have suggested its occurrence, but the limited number of identified events leaves the overall global picture in the Jovian magnetosphere uncertain. Aims. The primary objective of this study is to answer whether dayside magnetodisc reconnection could exist within the Jovian magnetosphere through the use of global magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations. Additionally, we aim to conduct a numerical investigation to reveal its general distribution for possible future exploration. Methods. The numerical simulations for Jovian magnetospheric dynamics are based on three-dimensional MHD calculations, which enable magnetic reconnection through numerical resistivity. In post-processing procedures, the simulated magnetodisc reconnection event is primarily identified by equatorial Bθ reversals, accompanied by an analysis of local plasma flows and global magnetic field lines. Results. Our global MHD simulations reveal the existence of magnetodisc reconnection within the dayside Jovian magnetosphere. The simulation results indicate that dayside magnetodisc reconnection is more likely to occur during solar wind rarefaction, primarily due to the rapid expansion of the dayside magnetospheric volume. This expansion allows a rotation-driven centrifugal force to generate sufficient magnetic field line stretching for current sheet thinning and reconnection. In simulated dayside events, Bθ reversals may occur locally or non-locally through rotational transport from reconnection sites at earlier magnetic local times. Conclusions. The existence and the features derived from simulations are testable as Galileo/Juno has accumulated a considerable amount of dayside magnetospheric data. These results are valuable for future Jovian missions, such as JUICE and Europa Clipper, and provide new insights into interpreting measurements from other rapidly rotating systems. Previously we showed hyperosmotic solution caused TRPV1‐dependent NKCC1 activation in the lens by a mechanism that involved ERK1/2 signaling. In various tissues, integrins and the cytoskeletal network play a role in responses to osmotic stress. Here, we examined the association between integrins and TRPV1‐dependent activation of NKCC1 in mouse lens epithelium. Wild‐type (WT) lenses exposed to the integrin agonist leukadherin‐1 (LA‐1) for 10 min displayed a ~33% increase in the bumetanide‐sensitive rate of Rb uptake indicating NKCC activation. Paclitaxel, a microtubule stabilizing agent, abolished the Rb uptake response. In primary cultured lens epithelium LA‐1 caused a robust ERK1/2 activation response that was almost fully suppressed by paclitaxel. The TRPV1 agonist capsaicin caused a similar ERK1/2 activation response. Consistent with an association between integrins and TRPV1, the TRPV1 antagonist A889425 prevented the Rb uptake response to LA‐1 as did the ERK inhibitor U0126. LA‐1 did not increase Rb uptake by lenses from TRPV1 knockout mice. In cells exposed to a hyperosmotic stimulus, both the ERK1/2 activation and Rb uptake responses were prevented by paclitaxel. Taken together, the findings suggest TRPV1 activation is associated with integrins and the tubulin cytoskeleton. This aligned with the observation that LA‐1 elicited a robust cytoplasmic calcium rise in cells from WT lenses but failed to increase calcium in cells from TRPV1 knockout lenses. The results are consistent with the notion that integrin activation by LA‐1, or a hyperosmotic stimulus, causes TRPV1 channel opening and the consequent downstream activation of the ERK1/2 and NKCC1 responses. For the first time, this asymmetry is validated within 40 Jupiter radii using plasma observations from the Juno mission. Compared to the duskside, the dawnside plasma exhibits lower density, higher temperature, and larger corotational velocity (even exceeds rigid corotation sometimes). These results indicate distinct origins for inflows and outflows. This study brings us a step forward in our understanding of the dynamics of Jupiter's magnetosphere and provides a data set for comparison with simulations. Abstract Juno satellite observations have illustrated substantial examples of broadband electron energization up to 105–106 eV levels. In order to explain these observations, we use a hybrid gyrofluid kinetic‐electron model in an untilted dipolar topology to illustrate energization to high levels in weak current conditions by inertial Alfvén waves close to the Jupiter ionosphere for ambient plasma densities and magnetic field perturbations inferred from Juno satellite observations. The key to the high energization is the extremely low densities evident in the observations which necessitates the acceleration of electrons to very high velocities in order to carry the field‐aligned current.

ATP release from the lens via hemichannels has been explained as a response to TRPV4 activation when the lens is subjected to osmotic swelling. To explore the apparent linkage between TRPV4 activation and connexin hemichannel opening we performed patch-clamp recordings on cultured mouse lens epithelial cells exposed to the TRPV4 agonist GSK1016790A (GSK) in the presence or absence of the TRPV4 antagonist HC067047 (HC). GSK was found to cause a fast, variable and generally large non-selective increase of whole cell membrane conductance evident as a larger membrane current (Im) over a wide voltage range. The response was prevented by HC. The GSK-induced Im increase was proportionally larger at negative voltages and coincided with fast depolarization and the simultaneous disappearance of an outward current, likely a K+ current. The presence of this outward current in control conditions appeared to be a reliable predictor of a cell’s response to GSK treatment. In some studies, recordings were obtained from single cells by combining cell-attached and whole-cell patch clamp configurations. This approach revealed events with a channel conductance 180–270 pS following GSK application through the patch pipette on the cell-attached side. The findings are consistent with TRPV4-dependent opening of Cx43 hemichannels.

Aside from a monolayer of epithelium at the anterior surface, the lens is formed by tightly compressed multilayers of fiber cells, most of which are highly differentiated and have a limited capacity for ion transport. Only the anterior monolayer of epithelial cells has high Na, K-ATPase activity. Because the cells are extensively coupled, the lens resembles a syncytium and sodium-potassium homeostasis of the entire structure is largely dependent on ion transport by the epithelium. Here we describe recent studies that suggest TRPV4 and TRPV1 ion channels activate signaling pathways that play an important role in matching epithelial ion transport activity with needs of the lens cell mass. A TRPV4 feedback loop senses swelling in the fiber mass and increases Na, K-ATPase activity to compensate. TRPV4 channel activation in the epithelium triggers opening of connexin hemichannels, allowing the release of ATP that stimulates purinergic receptors in the epithelium and results in the activation of Src family tyrosine kinases (SFKs) and SFK-dependent increase of Na, K-ATPase activity. A separate TRPV1 feedback loop senses shrinkage in the fiber mass and increases NKCC1 activity to compensate. TRPV1 activation causes calcium-dependent activation of a signaling cascade in the lens epithelium that involves PI3 kinase, ERK, Akt and WNK. TRPV4 and TRPV1 channels are also evident in the ciliary body where Na, K-ATPase is localized on one side of a bilayer in which two different cell types, non-pigmented and pigmented ciliary epithelium, function in a coordinated manner to secrete aqueous humor. TRPV4 and TRPV1 may have a role in maintenance of cell volume homeostasis as ions and water move through the bilayer.

CANWA (Comparative Analytical Numerical Wave Algorithm), written in MATLAB, provides a fast, direct comparison of a general finite volume solution to the 1+1 shallow water wave equations with a robust analytical solution recently presented by Nicolsky et al. (2018). The implementation of the method for data projection, introduced in Nicolsky et al. (2018), solves the initial value problem produced by the Carrier-Greenspan transformation, allows for highly accurate simulations of waves with nonzero initial velocities. Additionally, an L2analysis of error grants a comparison of solutions across the entire spatial domain. Simulations of both solitary and N-waves reveal that the numerical method consistently yields larger inundation zones than the analytical solution.

The flow shear-driven Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instability is ubiquitous in planetary magnetospheres. At Earth these surface waves are important along the dawn and dusk flanks of the magnetopause boundary while at Jupiter and Saturn the entire dayside magnetopause boundary can exhibit KH activity due to corotational flows in the magnetosphere. Kelvin-Helmholtz waves can be a major ingredient in the so-called viscous-like interaction with the solar wind. In this paper, we review the KH instability from the perspective of hybrid (kinetic ions, fluid electrons) simulations. Many of the simulations are based on parameters typically found at Saturn’s magnetopause boundary, but the results can be generally applied to any KH-unstable situation. The focus of the discussion is on the ion kinetic scale and implications for mass, momentum, and energy transport at the magnetopause boundary.
