Op-ed writers reflect the ideology of their media organizations in their columns using various linguistic strategies. These strategies can be manifested using the analytic tools provided by Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The aim of this study is to analyze how the portrait of Mehmed II painted by the Italian artist Bellini being purchased by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality on 25 June 2020 is reflected in two op-ed articles in the Sözcü and Yeni Akit newspapers which represent contrasting ideologies. The op-ed articles have been analyzed using the Predication strategy within the framework of Discourse-Historical Approach (Reisigl & Wodak, 2009). Our findings have revealed that predication strategy has been used in the op-ed article in Yeni Akit newspaper to present the opposition between us and them, while it has been used in the op-ed article in Sözcü to create a similarity between the social actors with different ideological orientations by mitigating the distinction between us and them. It has been concluded that the topic at hand is the determining factor for the op-ed writers in conveying their ideologies in the text and that the predication strategy is mainly used to persuade the target audience.

Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) syndrome is a rare condition. Surgical intervention is indicated in all diagnosed patients. Successful repair is expected to correct left ventricle (LV) functions and heart failure, reduce mitral regurgitation, and resolve infarct patterns observed on electrocardiogram. For this reason, compared to idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, ALCAPA is considered a curable form of dilated cardiomyopathy. In this article, we present the case of 3-month-old girl who underwent the Takeuchi procedure for ALCAPA syndrome and developed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy despite expectations of improved LV function.

Abstract Aim Elevated levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream, also referred to as hypercholesterolemia, pose a significant risk for the onset of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. Oxysterols, cholesterol-derived oxidized compounds that form enzymatically or non-enzymatically, contribute to the development of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. This study aimed to examine the critical oxysterol levels in children and adolescents with hypercholesterolemia and explore the correlation between these levels, oxidative stress, and atherosclerosis progression. Materials and methods The study included 20 patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) and 20 healthy individuals aged between 6 and 18 years. Participants were categorized into children (6–9 years) and adolescents (10–18 years). Pediatric and adolescent patients were selected from among subjects with LDL-C ≥ 130 mg/dL and diagnosed with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) based on the presence of mutations in the LDL receptor (LDL-R) gene. Patients with HeFH who were receiving regular atorvastatin therapy were included in the study. Results There were no notable differences in catalase and paraoxonase (PON1) activities among the groups. However, the patient group displayed substantially higher levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) (P = 0.0108) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity (P = 0.0103). Compared to the healthy control group, serum chitotriosidase (CHITO) activity (P = 0.037) and chitinase 3-like protein 1 (YKL-40) levels (P = 0.0027) were significantly elevated in the patient group. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of radiation dose reduction with a new-generation biplane angiocardiography system in patients undergoing transcatheter isolated patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure. Materials and methods: Fifty pediatric patients who underwent transcatheter PDA closure were randomly divided into two groups as normal radiation dose and low dose. Patients who required additional procedures other than PDA closure were excluded. PDA closure was performed according to the angiographic measurement of the defect. After the procedure, age, weight, sex, PDA measurements, and radiation measurements such as dose-area product (DAP, Gy.cm2) and air kerma (AK, mGy) were compared between the groups. Results: There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in age, sex, weight, PDA diameter, PDA type, device used, and device diameter (p > 0.05). Aim: This study aimed to detect the carbapenem resistance of the Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, isolated from clinical specimens with genotypic and phenotypic methods. Material and Methods: A total of 87 Klebsiella pneumoniae strains whose carbapenem resistance was determined by disc diffusion method were included in the study. Carbapenemase was investigated using the combined disk method and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: The evaluation of the PCR results demonstrated that OXA was detected in 60 (68.9%) samples, NDM was detected in 20 (22.9%), OXA + NDM in 5 (5.7%), and KPC was detected in 1 (1.1%) out of 87 clinical samples. Carbapenemase was not detected in one specimen with the PCR method. The results were found compatible with the combined disc test results for all isolates which were detected as only OXA, NDM, and KPC type carbapenemase positive. In 5 (5.7%) strains in which the co-existence of NDM and OXA type carbapenemases was detected by PCR, the combined disc method detected only OXA type carbapenemase. Conclusion: The combined disk method is inadequate in the presence of strains that have multiple carbapenemases, and also have OXA which is the most frequently detected carbapenemase in our hospital. EUCAST recommends verification by other methods in the presence of OXA-48. Genotypic methods can be used for confirmation testing. The detections of strains with NDM, multiple carbapenemases, and the first detection of KPC were striking in the study. Monitoring the spread of these strains in the hospital will be necessary for infection control.
