Skywave refers to the electromagnetic wave reflected or refracted from the ionosphere and propagated in the form of a guided wave between the ionosphere and the Earth's surface. Since the skywave can propagate over large distances, it has been widely used in long-distance communication. This paper explores and demonstrates the feasibility of skywave for deep resource and energy exploration at depths of up to 10 km. Theoretical and technical advancements were accomplished in furthering skywave applications. A new solution method based on Green's function has been developed to study skywave propagation in a fully coupled lithosphere-air-ionosphere full space model. For the first time, the model allows one to study skywave distribution characteristics in the lithosphere containing inhomogeneity such as ore deposits or oil and gas reservoirs. This model also lays a foundation for skywave data processing and interpretation. On a parallel line, we have developed a multi-channel, broadband, low-noise, portable data acquisition system suitable for receiving skywave signals. Using the skywave field excited by a high-power fixed source located in central China, actual field surveys have been carried out in some areas in China including the Biyang depression of Henan Province. The initial results appear encouraging—the interpreted resistivity models prove to be consistent with those of seismic exploration and known geological information, and the exploration cost is only ∼1/4 to 1/10 that of seismic surveys. A summation technique has been developed based on the continuous fractional expansion to accelerate the convergence of infinite series involving the product of Riccati-Bessel functions, which are common to electromagnetic applications. The series is transformed into a new and faster convergent sequence with a continued fraction form, and then the continued fraction approximation is used to accelerate the calculation. The well-known addition theorem formula for spherical wave function is used to verify the correctness of the algorithm. Then, some fundamental aspects of the practical application of continuous fractional expansion for Mie scattering theory and electromagnetic exploration are considered. The results of different models show that this new technique can be applied reliably, especially in the electromagnetic field excited by the vertical electric dipole (VED) source in the "earth-ionospheric" cavity. The comparison among the new technology, theWatsontransform, and the spherical harmonic series summation algorithm shows that this new technology only needs less than 120 series items which is already enough to obtain a small relative error, which greatly improves the convergence speed, and provides a new way to solve the problem. We have carried out microseismic forward modelling in orthorhombic poroelastic medium. The seismic response to isotropic (ISO) source, double couple (DC) source and compensated linear vector dipole (CLVD) source was solved by finite-difference algorithm in time domain, respectively. We used analytical solution to test our numerical algorithm and find that the match between the analytical solutions and numerical solutions is sufficiently close. We then designed several different models to calculate the seismic response and analyse the effect of medium parameters and source mechanism on the propagation of seismic waves. We observed from the modelling results that ISO source excites two kinds of waves in isotropic medium, which are fast longitudinal wave and slow longitudinal wave, while the DC and CLVD sources excite three kinds of waves in isotropic medium, including a transverse wave in addition to the fast and slow longitudinal waves. All of these three kinds of sources generate four kinds of seismic waves in orthorhombic poroelastic medium. These are two separable transverse waves in addition to the fast and slow longitudinal waves. The fluid viscosity and medium tortuosity has an effect on the propagation of the slow longitudinal wave. The slow longitudinal wave appears in propagating mode under the effect of low fluid viscosity and appears at the source location in a static mode under the effect of high fluid viscosity. The wavefield snapshot of the slow longitudinal wave has a circular shape when the tortuosity is isotropic, whereas it has an oval shape when the tortuosity is anisotropic. As far as the anisotropic parameters are concerned, the anisotropy of the fast longitudinal wave is more sensitive to the value of |$\varepsilon ({{\varepsilon _1},{\varepsilon _2}})$|⁠ , while the value of |${\rm{\delta }}({{{\rm{\delta }}_1},{{\rm{\delta }}_2},{{\rm{\delta }}_3}})$| has more effect on the anisotropic behaviour of the two separable transverse waves.
