Esta tese abordou a demanda por Moedas Sociais Digitais (MSD) e seus níveis de circulação e retenção, procurando identificar quais fatores influenciam esses aspectos e como eles se inter-relacionam. Foram adotadas a teoria de Sistemas Complexos e conceitos da teoria keynesiana aplicados ao contexto da MSD. Para realizar esta pesquisa, utilizei um Modelo Baseado em Agentes (MBA) calibrado para os casos do Banco Preventório, de Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, e da Moeda Sarafu, do Quênia. Para a realização dessa calibragem, foi utilizado um método de aprendizado de máquina por reforço, denominado algoritmo Q-Learning. Dentre os resultados obtidos nesta pesquisa, destaco o fato de que o motivo transacional, proposto pela teoria keynesiana, é uma das causas para aquisição e retenção de MSD, sendo esta retenção definida pelo tempo que um usuário leva para utilizar a MSD em uma operação de compra ou para trocá-la por moeda nacional. Além disso, verifiquei que, quando a retenção de moeda está associada a essa motivação, ela contribui para aumentar seu nível de circulação. Por outro lado, quando está associada a contas inativas, a retenção influencia negativamente a demanda pela moeda e seu nível de circulação. Outros resultados indicam que a cobrança de penalidades por retenção da MSD diminui o nível de circulação da moeda. Os mesmos também indicam que um pequeno aumento mensal no número de usuários que realizam operações e no número de operações realizadas representaria um grande aumento na demanda pela MSD. Como contribuição teórica, esta pesquisa apresenta a associação de conceitos da teoria keynesiana com a teoria dos Sistemas Complexos como uma base conceitual adequada para o estudo de MSD. Como contribuição prática, apresenta o MBA como um instrumento para o estudo das Moedas Sociais Digitais, que pode ser utilizado como ferramenta de planejamento estratégico por gestores de sistemas de MSD e por potenciais doadores para esses sistemas. Esse modelo também pode ser usado como ferramenta de supervisão por órgãos reguladores como o Banco Central do Brasil. This thesis addressed the demand for Digital Social Currencies (DSC), and their levels of circulation and retention, trying to identify which factors influence these aspects and how they interrelate. The theory of complex systems and elements of Keynesian theories applied to the DSC context were adopted. To carry out this research, I used an Agent-Based Model (ABM) calibrated for the cases of Banco Preventório, from Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, and Sarafu Currency, from Kenya. To perform this calibration, a reinforcement machine learning method, called Q-Learning algorithm, was used. Among the results obtained in this research, I highlight the fact that the transactional motive, proposed by Keynesian theory, is one of the causes for the acquisition and retention of DSC, and this retention is defined by the time that a user takes to use the MSD in a purchase operation or to exchange it for national currency. Furthermore, I found that when currency retention is associated with this motive it contributes to increasing its circulation level. On the other hand, when it is associated with inactive accounts, retention negatively influences the demand for the currency and its level of circulation. Other results indicate that charging penalty fees for DSC retention decreases the currency circulation level. They also indicate that a small monthly increase in the number of users performing trades and in the number of trades performed would represent a large increase in demand for DSC. As a theoretical contribution, this research presents the association of concepts from Keynesian theories with the theory of Complex Systems as an adequate conceptual basis for the study of DSC. As a practical contribution this research presents the Agent-Based Models as an instrument for the study of Digital Social Currencies, which can be used as a strategic planning tool by managers of Digital Social Currencies systems and by potential donors for these systems. It can also be used as a supervisory tool by regulators such as the Central Bank of Brazil.

This thesis seeks to understand how we can cooperatively design information infrastructures under the principles of solidarity economy. The focus lies on solidarity cryptocurrency design, a recent phenomenon that connects the social perspective of community currencies with the technological architecture of the cryptocurrencies. Solidarity cryptocurrency is a recent phenomenon that connects the social perspective of community currencies with the technological architecture of the cryptocurrencies. By dealing with logics coming from different universes, the social perspective of community currencies with the technological architecture of the cryptocurrencies, designing a solidarity cryptocurrency is about making possible the connection between these two distinct worlds. To investigate the designing of solidarity cryptocurrency, this thesis develops an alternative view of the cryptocurrency design that emerges from a Solidarity Economy experience, showing how the process of designing a solidarity cryptocurrency holds a dialogic tension between two ways of design. My conceptual background integrated elements of two theoretical traditions. First, the tecnologia social, a Latin American concept that sees the development of technologies for social transformation built and/or appropriated by the population affected by them. Second, the concept of infrastructuring, which denotes a multi-relational and processual perspective of information infrastructures design. I adopt a design ethnography strategy to examine the design of a solidarity cryptocurrency, an infrastructure that adapts the digital payment platform held by the solidarity organization Instituto E-Dinheiro Brasil into a blockchain platform. The results reveal the importance of connecting local resources and knowledge through developing located accountability by experts, direct community participation, and integrating local technologies. We unveil how process of reconfiguration of artefacts, imaginaries and social practices unfold towards a solidary economy landscape. Esta dissertação procura compreender como podemos projetar infraestruturas de informação cooperativamente sob os princípios da economia solidária. Tem como foco principal o design de criptomoedas solidárias, um fenômeno recente que conecta a perspectiva social das moedas comunitárias com a arquitetura tecnológica das criptomoedas. Ao lidar com lógicas oriundas de universos diferentes, da perspectiva social das moedas comunitárias com a arquitetura tecnológica das criptomoedas, projetar uma criptomoeda solidária requer a conexão entre dois mundos distintos. Para investigar o design de uma criptomoeda solidária, esta dissertação desenvolve uma visão alternativa do design de criptomoeda que emerge de uma experiência de Economia Solidária, mostrando como o processo de concepção de uma criptomoeda solidária mantém uma tensão dialógica entre duas formas de design. Minha formação conceitual integrou elementos de duas tradições teóricas. Em primeiro lugar, o conceito de infrastructuring, que uma perspectiva multi-relacional e processual de projeto de infraestruturas de informação. Segundo, a tecnologia social, conceito latino-americano que aborda o desenvolvimento de tecnologias como um processo de transformação social que se dá através da construção e/ou apropriação dessas tecnologias pela população por elas afetada. Adoto uma estratégia de Design Etnográfico para examinar o design de uma criptomoeda solidária, uma infraestrutura que busca adaptar a plataforma de pagamento digital da organização solidária Instituto E-Dinheiro Brasil em uma plataforma blockchain. Os resultados revelam a importância de conectar recursos e conhecimentos locais por meio do desenvolvimento de responsabilização localizada por especialistas, participação direta da comunidade e integração de tecnologias locais. Desvendamos como o processo de reconfiguração de artefatos, imaginários e práticas sociais se desdobra em direção a uma paisagem de economia solidária.
