9. 'Dukunú Môlé, zogô cúnxença': a serious game to reconcile biodiversity conservation and economic development in isolated tropical islands. The case of São Tomé and Principe

Abstract

The republic of São Tomé and Principe (STP), a small island developing state (SIDS) is at a crossroads. The island faces major environmental and economic challenges posing threats to its unique biodiversity and primary forests. The island's fast-growing population, combined with poor environmental governance, has led to huge pressure on natural resources. Demand for timber, charcoal and firewood for cooking and overexploitation of non-timber forest products are leading to forest loss and fragmentation and habitat degradation of endemic species. A consortium led by an environmental NGO started a participatory process using a serious game approach to explore alternative land use trajectories and reconcile economic opportunities with conservation measures. The tabletop role-playing game was co-designed, co-constructed, tested and implemented over one year (dec 2021 – jan 2023). Nine game sessions were played, gathering a total of 130 participants from various economic sectors (e.g. agriculture, tourism, forestry) and background (e.g. students, farmers, policymakers). Despite its apparent simplicity and compact layout, the game successfully allows for the exploration of diverse trajectories and pathways within a limited time of 3 hours. It fostered exchanges on alternative scenarios, policy implications, and highlighted a general lack of understanding on environmental rules and regulations and on interdependencies and feedback loop in the system.

Abstract

While the scientific community documents environmental degradation and develops scenarios to identify the operational margins of system Earth, less attention is given to how decisions are made that steer the system in one direction or the other. We propose to use strategy games for this purpose, increasing the representation of human agency in scenario development and creating spaces for deliberation between different worldviews. Played by the right people, strategy games could help break free from established norms and support more transparent democratic dialogues, responding to the human and social limitations of current decision-making. The question is, who gets to play?

Abstract

Non-PR, IFPRI1; 1 Fostering Climate-Resilient and Sustainable Food Supply; CRP5, EPTD, CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE), This note summarizes the results of interviews with 17 farmers in France to identify the motivations and challenges that impact farmers’ adoption of practices that improve biodiversity. Respondents were identified through the Chamber of Agriculture Nord Pas de Calais and through the farmer network of the team leader with a further snowballing approach to find additional potential participants, and thus were not representative. All interviews were conducted either in-person or on Zoom. This work was part of the Enhancing Biodiversity and Resilience in Crop Production project, which was commissioned by Bayer and implemented in collaboration with ETH Zurich and IFPRI. The project analyzed information that can contribute to guidance on using agricultural practices to improve biodiversity and resilience of farming systems. It focused on intensive maize, wheat, and soy production systems in France, Germany, Brazil, and the United States.
