Rip currents are the single largest cause of beach safety incidents globally, but where an estuary mouth intersects a beach, additional flows are created that can exceed the speed of a typical rip current, significantly increasing the hazard level for bathers. However, there is a paucity of observations of surfzone currents at estuary mouth beaches, and our understanding and ability to predict how the bathing hazard varies under different wave and tide conditions are therefore limited. Using field observations and process-based XBeach modelling at an embayed, estuary mouth beach, we demonstrate how surfzone currents can be driven by combinations of estuary discharge and wave-driven bathymetric and boundary rip currents under various combinations of wave and tide forcing. While previous studies have demonstrated the high hazard that rip currents pose, typically during lower stages of the tide, here we demonstrate that an estuary mouth beach can exhibit flows reaching 1.5 ms-1 – up to 50 % stronger than typical rip current flows – with a high proportion (> 60 %) of simulated bathers exiting the surfzone during the upper half of the tidal cycle. The three-dimensional ebb shoal delta was found to strongly control surfzone currents by (1) providing a conduit for estuary flows that connect to headland boundary rips and (2) acting as a nearshore bar system to generate wave-driven "river channel bathymetric rips". Despite significant spatio-temporal variability in the position of the river channels on the beach face, it was possible to hindcast the timing and severity of past bathing incidents from model simulations, providing a means to forewarn bathers of hazardous flows. Accurately predicting customer churn is considered crucial by businesses in order to take proactive measures to retain their customers and avoid financial losses. In this paper, a customer churn prediction model is proposed that incorporates deep neural networks and imbalanced data techniques. The approach involves applying oversampling and undersampling methods to address class imbalances in the dataset. The model's performance is evaluated using various evaluation metrics and compared to other methods. The results demonstrate that superior performance in predicting customer churn is achieved by the proposed model compared to traditional statistical methods and deep neural networks without imbalanced data techniques. Important implications for businesses seeking to reduce customer churn and improve customer retention are provided by our findings. By using the suggested model, customers can be retained, and financial losses can be avoided proactively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHINESE philosophy - Abstract
This essay presents a refreshing reading of Bertolt Brecht's Stories of Mr. Keuner through the lens of classical Chinese dialectics. Through careful analysis, I uncover not only interesting resonances between Brecht's stories and classical Chinese philosophy but also intriguing dialectic tensions between individual and clusters of stories in the collection, and between Brecht (the man, the artist, and his dramatic oeuvre) and Mr. Keuner (Mr. Nobody), his philosophical alter ego, as the titular character dialogues with his many interlocutors on momentous issues such as knowledge, power, justice, fatherland, and more. ACADEMIC achievement ,GRADE point average ,VOCATIONAL interests ,RESEARCH personnel ,CLASSROOMS - Abstract
Teacher beliefs and environmental conditions influence student performance outcomes. In this non- equivalent comparison quasi-experimental design study, students enrolled in ten secondary Principles of Agriculture courses assigned to a control or treatment group based upon their sexual identity. Teachers were asked periodically about their expectations of student performances. Over the course of the academic semester, students within the treatment group maintained higher grade point averages and better attendance. Boys from the treatment group maintained a higher percent of non-discipline referrals than boys from the control group. In addition, correlations are made between the teachers' expectations, and student performance and career aspirations. The researchers recommend that secondary schools consider single-sex classrooms for entry-level agricultural courses and for additional research to be considered to further strengthen the preliminary findings. Polyphenols exhibit various beneficial biological activities and represent very promising candidates as active compounds for food industry. However, the low solubility, poor stability and low bioavailability of polyphenols have severely limited their industrial applications. Enzymatic glycosylation is an effective way to improve the physicochemical properties of polyphenols. As efficient transglucosidases, glycoside hydrolase family 70 (GH70) glucansucrases naturally catalyze the synthesis of polysaccharides and oligosaccharides from sucrose. Notably, GH70 glucansucrases show broad acceptor substrate promiscuity and catalyze the glucosylation of a wide range of non-carbohydrate hydroxyl group-containing molecules, including benzenediol, phenolic acids, flavonoids and steviol glycosides. Branching sucrase enzymes, a newly established subfamily of GH70, are shown to possess a broader acceptor substrate binding pocket that acts efficiently for glucosylation of larger size polyphenols such as flavonoids. Here we present a comprehensive review of glucosylation of polyphenols using GH70 glucansucrase and branching sucrases. Their catalytic efficiency, the regioselectivity of glucosylation and the structure of generated products are described for these reactions. Moreover, enzyme engineering is effective for improving their catalytic efficiency and product specificity. The combined information provides novel insights on the glucosylation of polyphenols by GH70 glucansucrases and branching sucrases, and may promote their applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Customer retention is one of the challenging issues in different business sectors, and various firms utilize customer churn prediction (CCP) process to retain existing customers. Because of the direct impact on the company revenues, particularly in the telecommunication sector, firms are needed to design effective CCP models. The recent advances in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models enable researchers to introduce accurate CCP models in the telecommunication sector. CCP can be considered as a classification problem, which aims to classify the customer into churners and non-churners. With this motivation, this article focuses on designing an arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) with stacked bidirectional long short-term memory (SBLSTM) model for CCP. The proposed AOA-SBLSTM model intends to proficiently forecast the occurrence of CC in the telecommunication industry. Initially, the AOA-SBLSTM model performs pre-processing to transform the original data into a useful format. Besides, the SBLSTM model is employed to categorize data into churners and non-churners. To improve the CCP outcomes of the SBLSTM model, an optimal hyperparameter tuning process using AOA is developed. A widespread simulation analysis of the AOA-SBLSTM model is tested using a benchmark dataset with 3333 samples and 21 features. The experimental outcomes reported the promising performance of the AOA-SBLSTM model over the recent approaches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The default risk of listed companies not only threatens the interests of enterprises and internal staff but also leads the investors to face significant financial losses. Thus, this study attempts to establish an effective default prediction system for better corporate governance. In present times, it is not uncommon for a senior manager to serve in two or more companies. Our contribution has threefold. First, we construct an indicator system of default prediction for Chinese listed companies by considering the company relationship score. Then, we reversely infer the optimal ratios of the default and nondefault companies' degrees of influence on their related companies with the maximum area under the curve (AUC). Third, the empirical results show that the default prediction accuracy is improved by using our indicator system that includes the company relationship score. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper addresses the use of a customer character model as a determinant of used auto loan churn among a unique population of subprime borrowers. The customer character model (i.e restricted model) is compared to a full model consisting of the 4 Cs of capacity, collateral, credit, and character of churn prediction. The results reveal that there is a difference between the full model and the customer character model. Additionally, different supervised classification methods, such as logistic regression (LR), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), decision trees (DTs), and random forests (RFs), are applied and compared in terms of multiple predictive performance measures. The RF classification measures report the strongest performance. Additionally, different classification methods suggest the importance of different customer character variables. Therefore, from a practical perspective, effective borrower character screening is recommended to determine customer profiles more accurately for the purposes of target marketing and customer retention. This study also deepens understanding of subprime credit markets and reveals additional insights to credit screening using machine learning techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
One of The Smithsonian's Ten Best History Books of the YearA brilliant and daring account of a culture war over the place of theater in American democracy in the 1930s, one that anticipates our current divide, by the acclaimed Shakespeare scholar James ShapiroFrom 1935 to 1939, the Federal Theatre Project staged over a thousand productions in 29 states that were seen by thirty million (or nearly one in four) Americans, two thirds of whom had never seen a play before. At its helm was an unassuming theater professor, Hallie Flanagan. It employed, at its peak, over twelve thousand struggling artists, some of whom, like Orson Welles and Arthur Miller, would soon be famous, but most of whom were just ordinary people eager to work again at their craft. It was the product of a moment when the arts, no less than industry and agriculture, were thought to be vital to the health of the republic, bringing Shakespeare to the public, alongside modern plays that confronted the pressing issues of the day—from slum housing and public health to racism and the rising threat of fascism. The Playbook takes us through some of its most remarkable productions, including a groundbreaking Black production of Macbeth in Harlem and an adaptation of Sinclair Lewis's anti-fascist novel It Can't Happen Here that opened simultaneously in 18 cities, underscoring the Federal Theatre's incredible range and vitality. But this once thriving Works Progress Administration relief program did not survive and has left little trace. For the Federal Theatre was the first New Deal project to be attacked and ended on the grounds that it promoted “un-American” activity, sowing the seeds not only for the McCarthyism of the 1950s but also for our own era of merciless polarization. It was targeted by the first House un-American Affairs Committee, and its demise was a turning point in American cultural life—for, as Shapiro brilliantly argues, “the health of democracy and theater, twin born in ancient Greece, have always been mutually dependent.”A defining legacy of this culture war was how the strategies used to undermine and ultimately destroy the Federal Theatre were assembled by a charismatic and cunning congressman from East Texas, the now largely forgotten Martin Dies, who in doing so pioneered the right-wing political playbook now so prevalent that it seems eternal.

- Abstract
Despite a glut of black and white filters, the digital revolution in videography has all but abandoned the art, science, beauty, and power of cinematic lighting that literally illuminated the Golden Age of motion pictures. Film Noir Light and Shadow explores an era before CGI – a time when every photon mattered and the lighting of a set served a grander purpose than simply rendering its subjects visible. Edited by Alain Silver and James Ursini, the duo behind numerous critically acclaimed studies of other aspects of noir, this anthology presents a series of essays that examine the visual style of the filmmakers of cinema's classic period. Some focus on individual pictures or directors; others discuss elements of style or sub-groups of movies within the movement. All are sharply focused on what makes the noir phenomenon unique in American – and global – cinematic history. Aside from highlighting the innovative work of its editors and their late colleague Robert Porfirio, Film Noir Light and Shadow also shares its light with a bevy of contributors who have written and edited their own books on the subject – a list of luminaries that includes Sheri Chinen Biesen, Shannon Clute and Richard Edwards, Julie Grossman, Delphine Letort, Robert Miklitsch, R. Barton Palmer, Homer Pettey, Marlisa Santos, Imogen Sara Smith, and Tony Williams. As befits the topic, this volume is lavishly illustrated with 500 images that capture the richness and breadth of the classic period's imagery, making it an ideal companion for students of the genre, film historians, sprocket fiends, and the retrospectively inclined.

- Abstract
Drawing Liberalism is the first book-length critical examination of the political and social impact of the political cartoonist Herbert Block—popularly known as Herblock. Working for the Washington Post, Herblock played a central role in shaping, propagandizing, and defending the ideals of postwar liberalism, a normative set of values and assumptions that dominated American politics and culture after World War II.Best remembered for his unrelenting opposition to and skewering cartoons of Joseph McCarthy and Richard Nixon, Herblock introduced the term'McCarthyism'into the American political lexicon. With its unstinting and unapologetic support for the liberal agenda, across a career spanning over fifty years at the Post, Herblock's work affords a unique lens through which to interpret and understand the shifts and contours of twentieth-century American political culture, from the postwar period through the civil rights era into the Nixon presidency.

- Abstract
A razão é exatamente a inversa'.

In 1938, nine-year-old film star Shirley Temple was accused of being a dupe of the Communist Party, because she had waved at a group of communist journalists while in France. This accusation was not an aberration; it was a logical outcome of the right- and left-wing extremism that infected the United States at the time. During times of intense crisis, Americans have been prone to hunt for scapegoats to explain their troubles. Having correct ideas is used as a measure to prove that a person is indeed “100 percent American.” Extremists on both the right and left vie to have their ideas become the moral law of the land. Purges (“witch hunts”), flag waving, and a decreased tolerance for dissent are symptoms of such epochs.
