This study, guided by the theory of planned behavior (TPB), aimed to investigate whether attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control can predict parents' intentions to reduce or stop adding sugar to their child's beverages, such as tea or milk. The research also seeks to determine the predictive power of the TPB on the actual behavior of parents in reducing or halting sugar intake in their children's drinks. A questionnaire was developed to assess sweetening beverage behavior variables by mothers of children aged 3–7 years attending Lebanese public schools, with 184 responses retained with no missing values for analysis. Regression analysis was utilized to examine determinants of self-reported practice and intentions regarding sweetening beverages. Results showed that attitude and perceived behavioral control were significant predictors of intention to reduce or stop adding sugar to a child's beverages. The perception of behavioral control was found to predict the behavior of adding sugar to a child's beverages, even though the intention to reduce or stop did not. The study findings suggest that individuals with low perceived behavioral control and strong habits would be more likely to be actual performers of the adding sugar behavior regardless of their intention level. When adding sugar to a child's beverages is a common parental habit in low-income Lebanese families, our findings offer valuable insights for developing culturally and socially tailored health promotion strategies to reduce or stop adding sugar to children's beverages and raise parental awareness about the health risks associated with excessive sugar consumption in children. Background: The commensal skin bacterium Cutibacterium acnes plays a role in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris and also causes opportunistic infections of implanted medical devices due to its ability to form biofilms on biomaterial surfaces. Poly-β-(1→6)-N-acetyl-D-glucosamine (PNAG) is an extracellular polysaccharide that mediates biofilm formation and biocide resistance in a wide range of bacterial pathogens. The objective of this study was to determine whether C. acnes produces PNAG, and whether PNAG contributes to C. acnes biofilm formation and biocide resistance in vitro. Methods: PNAG was detected on the surface of C. acnes cells by fluorescence confocal microscopy using the antigen-specific human IgG1 monoclonal antibody F598. PNAG was detected in C. acnes biofilms by measuring the ability of the PNAG-specific glycosidase dispersin B to inhibit biofilm formation and sensitize biofilms to biocide killing. Results: Monoclonal antibody F598 bound to the surface of C. acnes cells. Dispersin B inhibited attachment of C. acnes cells to polystyrene rods, inhibited biofilm formation by C. acnes in glass and polypropylene tubes, and sensitized C. acnes biofilms to killing by benzoyl peroxide and tetracycline. Conclusion: C. acnes produces PNAG, and PNAG contributes to C. acnes biofilm formation and biocide resistance in vitro. Objectives: Reports of unsafe school drinking water in the United States highlight the importance of ensuring school water is safe for consumption. Our objectives were to describe (1) results from our recent school drinking water sampling of 5 common contaminants, (2) school-level factors associated with exceedances of various water quality standards, and (3) recommendations. Methods: We collected and analyzed drinking water samples from at least 3 sources in 83 schools from a representative sample of California public schools from 2017 through 2022. We used multivariate logistic regression to examine school-level factors associated with lead in drinking water exceedances at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendation level (1 part per billion [ppb]) and state action-level exceedances of other contaminants (lead, copper, arsenic, nitrate, and hexavalent chromium). Results: No schools had state action-level violations for arsenic or nitrate; however, 4% had ≥1 tap that exceeded either the proposed 10 ppb action level for hexavalent chromium or the 1300 ppb action level for copper. Of first-draw lead samples, 4% of schools had ≥1 tap that exceeded the California action level of 15 ppb, 18% exceeded the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) bottled water standard of 5 ppb, and 75% exceeded the AAP 1 ppb recommendation. After turning on the tap and flushing water for 45 seconds, 2%, 10%, and 33% of schools exceeded the same standards, respectively. We found no significant differences in demographic characteristics between schools with and without FDA or AAP exceedances. Conclusions: Enforcing stricter lead action levels (<5 ppb) will markedly increase remediation costs. A calcium phosphate solid formed as an unintended consequence of a novel high-pH orthophosphate lead corrosion control strategy in Providence, RI, resulting in some consumer complaints and clogged plumbing. Investigations were carried out at pH levels of 8.9–10.4, at temperatures of 5–60°C, and with orthophosphate concentrations ranging from 0 to 4.0 mg/L as orthophosphate (PO4) to examine this phenomenon. During field testing, the calcium phosphate initially precipitated at orthophosphate doses above about 2 mg/L as PO4, and the extent of precipitation increased with water age and higher temperature. Laboratory-scale tests confirmed that doses above about 2 mg/L as PO4 were required to form the precipitate in the absence of preexisting calcium phosphate solids and that the solid formed quickly at 60°C (upper range for hot water heaters) and tended to dissolve at lower pH. Solubility studies and solids characterization indicate that the particles are a mixture of noncrystalline compounds containing calcium and phosphate. For water systems currently practicing a high pH/low alkalinity corrosion control strategy, orthophosphate dosing can enhance plumbosolvency control without the risk of pH reduction, but formation of this solid can place an upper limit on the maximum orthophosphate residual level in the distribution system. Objective Special education enrollment increased in Flint following the 2014–2015 Flint Water Crisis, but lead exposure is not plausibly responsible. Labeling Flint children as lead poisoned and/or brain damaged may have contributed to rising special education needs (ie, nocebo effect). To better document this possibility, we surveyed schoolteachers and reviewed neuropsychological assessments of children for indications of negative labeling. Methods A survey of Flint and Detroit (control) public schoolteachers using a modified Illness Perception Questionnaire was conducted 5 years post-crisis. We also examined neuropsychological assessments from a recently settled class lawsuit. Results Relative to Detroit (n = 24), Flint teachers (n = 11) believed that a higher proportion of their students had harmful lead exposure (91.8% Flint vs 46% Detroit; P = 0.00034), were lead poisoned (51.3% vs 24.3%; P = 0.018), or brain damaged (28.8% vs 12.9%; P = 0.1), even though blood lead of Flint children was always less than half of that of Detroit children. Neuropsychological assessments diagnosed lead poisoning and/or brain damage from water lead exposure in all tested children (n = 8), even though none had evidence of elevated blood lead and a majority had prior learning disability diagnoses. Conclusion Teachers' responses and neuropsychological assessments suggest Flint children were harmed by a nocebo effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
