BACKGROUND // Despite the global reduction in smoking, the consumption of roll-your-own tobacco has increased in recent years in many countries, which may be slowing down the downward trend in smoking. The aim of this paper was to analyse the evolution of the number of people who use roll-your-own tobacco and tobacco of any type between 2013 and 2018 in the Basque Country and measure whether there were socioeconomic inequalities in its consumption. METHODS // We carried out an observational and cross-sectional study of a representative sample of the population living in the Basque Country aged 16 to 59 years (n2013=6929 y n2018=7961) from the Basque Health Survey (2013 and 2018) and the Basque Addictions Survey (2018). We calculated prevalences of regular tobacco smoking in general and of roll-your-own cigarettes according to different socioeconomic variables for the years 2013 and 2018, as well as prevalence ratios for the estimation of change between these years and according to the above variables through robust Poisson regression models. We stratified analyses by sex and two age groups. RESULTS // Overall smoking prevalence decreased between 2013 (men=27.7% and women=24.1%) and 2018 but remained the same for those who used roll-your-own tobacco (in 2013, men=5.1% and women=3.2%; in 2018=5.4% and 3.5%, respectively). In contrast to tobacco in general, which showed a clear socio-economic gradient, roll-your-own tobacco use was more prevalent among young people (in 2018, men=6.4% and women=4.1%), a group where the pattern by socio-economic status was less evident. CONCLUSIONS // Considering the persistence of roll-your-own tobacco consumption, we also should direct tobacco control towards this kind of product, and its use should be monitored and supervised, especially among young people., FUNDAMENTOS // A pesar de la reducción del número de personas fumadoras a nivel mundial, el consumo de tabaco de liar ha aumentado en los últimos años en muchos países, lo que puede frenar la tendencia descendente del hábito tabáquico. El objetivo de este trabajo fue analizar la evolución del número de personas que consumen tabaco de liar y tabaco de cualquier tipo entre 2013 y 2018 en el País Vasco y determinar si existían desigualdades socioeconómicas en su consumo. MÉTODOS // Se realizó un estudio observacional y transversal de una muestra representativa de la población residente en el País Vasco de dieciséis a cincuenta y nueve años (n2013=6.929 y n2018=7.961) a partir de la Encuesta de Salud del País Vasco (años 2013 y 2018) y de la Encuesta sobre Adicciones de Euskadi (2018). Se calcularon las prevalencias de consumo habitual de tabaco en general y de tabaco de liar según diferentes variables socioeconómicas para los años 2013 y 2018, así como las razones de prevalencia para la estimación del cambio entre esos años y según las variables anteriores mediante modelos de regresión de Poisson robusto. Los análisis se estratificaron por sexo y por dos grupos de edad. RESULTADOS // La prevalencia de consumo de tabaco en general disminuyó entre 2013 (hombres=27,7% y mujeres=24,1%) y 2018 (hombres= 24,1% y mujeres=18,6%), pero se mantuvo en el caso del consumo de tabaco de liar (en 2013, hombres=5,1% y mujeres=3,2%; en 2018, 5,4% y 3,5%, respectivamente). A diferencia del consumo de tabaco en general, que presentó un claro gradiente socioeconómico, el consumo de tabaco de liar fue más prevalente entre las personas jóvenes (en 2018, hombres=6,4% y mujeres=4,1%), grupo en el que el patrón por posición socioeconómica era menos evidente. CONCLUSIONES // Considerando la persistencia en el consumo de tabaco de liar, es preciso dirigir también la lucha contra el tabaquismo hacia este tipo de productos, así como vigilar y monitorizar su consumo, especialmente entre las persona

Esta contribución pretende utilizar los datos de siniestralidad del seguro de riesgos extraordinarios por causa de inundación entre 1996 y 2022 y los datos de valores asegurados, ambos con resolución código postal, para hacer un análisis del riesgo de inundación en España, tanto espacial, con resolución de código postal, y también agregado por demarcación hidrográfica, como de la estacionalidad de esas inundaciones a partir de la estación en la que se abonan, de media, mayor porcentaje de indemnizaciones en cada código postal.

Textbooks play a fundamental role in teaching and learning in school science classrooms. In this paper, we investigate the presentation of the nature of the electromagnetic field in a dozen of the world’s most popular introductory university physics textbooks. We analyze, from an epistemologically based teaching approach, the didactic treatment of the electromagnetic field in relation to its sources, Maxwell’s laws and electromagnetic waves. With this objective, we elaborate a rational reconstruction of the developments that led to the formulation of the nature of the electromagnetic field, Maxwell’s laws and their meaning, as well as electromagnetic waves. Next, we formulate criteria based on the key aspects derived from the reconstruction that are useful in the evaluation of electromagnetism textbooks at the introductory level and apply them to the sample of selected books. In light of the results, we reflect on their consequences for teaching. Our analysis indicates the existence of certain inconsistencies in the approach to the electromagnetic field and its relationship with its sources, Maxwell’s laws and electromagnetic waves in many of the books analyzed.

130 p., Debido al envejecimiento de las presas y el mayor interés por restaurar los ecosistemas fluviales, el número de proyectos de desmantelamiento de presas ha aumentado en las últimas décadas. Aunque el objetivo del desmantelamiento de presas es mejorar el hábitat, la biodiversidad y el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas fluviales alargo plazo, también puede causar impactos ecológicos a corto plazo, principalmente debido a la movilización del sedimento acumulado en el embalse. En todo el mundo ya se han eliminado más de 2.000 presas, pero los impactos y beneficios de esta importante intervención han sido poco estudiados, especialmente en el caso de las grandes presas.Además, hay aún menos información sobre los efectos de la demolición de presas en el funcionamiento de ecosistemas que en otras variables. No obstante, los impactos son probables ya que la hidrología, la morfología del cauce y la biodiversidad están estrechamente vinculados a los procesos ecosistémicos. Esta tesis explora los efectos del desmantelamiento de Enobieta, una presa de gran tamaño localizada en el norte de la Península Ibérica, en la estructura y el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas fluviales. Para ello se aplicó un diseño experimental denominado multipe before-after/control-impact (mBACI), que permite controlar la variabilidad espacial y temporal. Antes de que comenzara el desmantelamiento de la presa, observamos la falta de sedimento aguas abajo de la presa. También se midieron altas concentraciones de manganeso y hierro, causadas por la hipoxia creada en el hipolimnion durante la estratificación. Sin embargo, estas concentraciones disminuyeron conforme aumentaba la distancia desde la presa,llegando en el punto más lejano a la presa a valores similares a los medidos en los tramos control. La concentración de amonio siguió un patrón similar al observado para los metales. Droughts, or severe reductions of water flow, are expected to become more frequent and intense in rivers in many regions under the ongoing climate change scenario. It is therefore important to understand stream ecosystem functioning under drought conditions. We performed a meta-analysis of studies addressing drought effects on litter decomposition in streams (50 studies contributing 261 effect sizes) to quantify overall drought effects on this key ecosystem process and to identify the main moderators controlling these effects. Drought reduced litter decomposition by 43% overall, which can impact energy and matter fluxes along heterotrophic food webs. The magnitude of drought effects on litter decomposition depended on the type of drought (natural drought > human-induced drought), type of decomposer community (microbes + macroinvertebrates > microbes) under natural drought, climate (warm and humid > temperate and Mediterranean) under human-induced drought, and on litter identity. The magnitude of drought effects on litter decomposition also increased with the severity of the drought. The effects of ongoing climate change will likely be strongest in streams with abundant shredders undergoing natural drought, especially if the streams become temporary. The composition of the riparian vegetation may modulate the magnitude of drought effects on litter decomposition, which may have management applications.

Population estimation implies considering the biology of the species, but also the constraints of logistic aspects such as cost. While common methods based on individual counts can provide precise estimates, they require an extensive sampling effort. An alternative to these methods is using cues linked to the species abundance. In that case, producing absolute estimates requires assessing the relationship between the individuals and these cues. In this paper, we propose a model based on data on spawning behaviour and Approximate Bayesian Computation to estimate the number of sea lamprey spawners using nest counts data. By counting the daily number of occupied nests and using parameters from a behavioural study, we set up a model simulating a spawning season and returning a population estimate by comparison with field data. Our model gives realistic estimates and we discuss the parameters on which to prioritize data collection with a sensitivity analysis, and show that halving the sample size provides a still satisfactory accuracy. We made an easily parametrizable application to run the model for any people interested in sea lamprey population estimation, and believe this framework to be a good way to increase data collection for both endangered and invasive sea lamprey.

Aging dams and the rising efforts to restore stream ecosystems are increasing the number of dam decommissioning programs. Although dam decommissioning aims at improving in-stream habitat, biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning in the long term, it might also cause ecological impacts in the short term due to the mobilization of the sediment accumulated in the reservoir. Benthic biofilm in particular can be impaired by episodes of high turbidity and scouring. We conducted a multiple before-after/control-impact experiment to assess the effects of the drawdown of a large dam (42 m tall), a first step to its decommissioning, on biofilm structure (biomass and chlorophyll-a) and functioning (metabolism, nutrient uptake, and organic matter breakdown). Our results show that the reservoir drawdown reduced the autotrophic biofilm biomass (chlorophyll-a) downstream from the dam, which in turn lowered metabolism. However, nitrogen and phosphorus uptake by the biofilm was not affected. Organic matter breakdown was slower below the dam than in nearby undammed reaches before and during drawdown. All drawdown effects quickly disappeared and reaches downstream from the dam approached values found in nearby undammed reaches. Thus, our results indicate that the effects of reservoir drawdown on stream biofilms exist but may be small and disappear rapidly.

he amount of wastewater processed in treatment plants is increasing following more strict environmental regulations. Treatment facilities are implementing upgrades to abate the concentrations of nutrients and contaminants and, thus, reduce their effects on receiving systems. Although many studies characterized the chemical composition and ecotoxicological effects of treated wastewater, its environmental effects are still poorly known, as receiving water bodies are often subjected to other stressors. We performed a field manipulative experiment to measure the response of invertebrate assemblages to one year of tertiary-treated wastewater discharges. We poured treated wastewater from an urban wastewater treatment plant into the lower-most 100-m of a previously unpolluted stream (3.6 % daily flow on average) while using another upstream reach as control. The positive correlation between effect sizes of abundance changes and IBMWP scores suggested assemblage modifications were following taxa tolerance to ecological impairment. The treatment increased the temporal variability of SPEARorganic, EPT relative abundance, and invertebrate functional redundancy. Our results show that even in this best-case scenario of tertiary-treated and highly diluted wastewater, the abundance of the most sensitive taxa in the aquatic assemblages is reduced. Further improvements in wastewater treatments seem necessary to ensure these effluents do not modify receiving water ecosystems.
