11. Salient deliberative norm types in comment sections on news sites.

Abstract

Civil and argumentative public discussions are considered crucial for functioning democracies. Among other factors, the quality of user discussions of political issues on news sites depends on prevalent discussion norms. We integrate injunctive and descriptive norms into news comment research, assuming that the degree of salience of the respective norm influences the commenting behavior. Furthermore, we discuss how technical affordances such as default comment sorting determine the comment visibility and thus the salience of norms. Using data from a content analysis of 8162 comments on eight German news sites, we investigate how the two norm types influence deliberative forms of commenting. The results show that different types of salient injunctive and descriptive norms promote norm-compliant commenting. Furthermore, the default comment sorting can determine which comments are more or less salient. The results underline the importance of distinguishing different norm types in analyzing the quality of user comments in comment sections. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Visibility and its counterpart, invisibility, are critical concepts in digital communication, although research on these concepts in communication studies has rarely been reflected on in an integrative way. This article aims to map key discussions in current research on in/visibility from a communication studies perspective. Therefore, through a literature review, we elaborate on these discussions in research areas dealing extensively with in/visibility. The resulting mapping highlights similarities and differences between definitions of in/visibility and systematizes the various approaches according to three essential understandings (perceptibility, presence, and valuation) and three paradigmatic perspectives (functionalist, interpretive, and critical). The article offers a deeper understanding of the range of previous studies on the undertheorized concepts of in/visibility and demonstrates the concepts' potential for future research within communication studies. 14. Populistisch und verschwörungstheoretisch?

Abstract

Parallel zu rechtspopulistischen Bewegungen und Parteien sind in Deutschland in den vergangenen zehn Jahren auch rechtsalternative Online-Medien entstanden. Während zur Entstehung und Verbreitung von Populismus und Falschinformationen in und durch etablierte und soziale Medien bereits einige empirische Erkenntnisse vorliegen, wissen wir bislang nur wenig über das Ausmaß von Populismus und Verschwörungstheorien in solchen rechtsalternativen Online-Angeboten. Deshalb beleuchtet der Beitrag am Beispiel der Covid-19-Pandemie, wie häufig Populismus und Verschwörungstheorien in diesen Medien vorkommen. Dafür untersucht die Studie Medienbeiträge der rechtsalternativen Online-Medien Compact, Journalistenwatch, PI News, Politikstube, Zuerst!und Junge Freiheitin einer standardisierten manuellen Inhaltsanalyse (N= 202). Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Populismus und Verschwörungstheorien dort eher selten vorkommen. Primär sind die Inhalte durch eine spezifisch anti-elitäre Haltung gekennzeichnet. Weiterhin unterscheiden sich die rechtsalternativen Online-Medien im Ausmaß verschiedener Populismusformen und in den Verschwörungstheorien. Darüber hinaus liefern die Ergebnisse Anhaltspunkte dafür, das Konzept des Populismus operational neu zu denken.

Abstract

To comprehensively understand online communication behavior, a theoretical framework applied must capture the whole range of ambivalence between toxic and prosocial forms of online engagement. Although the concept of the Online Disinhibition Effect (ODE) provides a useful ground, it is theoretically underdeveloped. Building on the ODE and adding relevant aspects through a literature review, we propose a comprehensive model consisting of three analytical dimensions: (1) (intra-)individual and social antecedents including personal traits, attitudes, group characteristics, and cultural contexts and values, (2) communication and media environments as antecedents comprising platform affordances as well as news characteristics, and (3) (situational) correlates which include individuals’ situational states as well as user interactions and dynamics. Our Online Communication Disinhibition Model (OCDM) is able to capture individual and public communication on diverse platforms and in different modalities and can be used to study disinhibition in various subdisciplines of media and communication studies.

22. Rational-Critical User Discussions: How Argument Strength and the Conditions Set by News Organizations Are Linked to (Reasoned) Disagreement

Abstract

AbstractDue to their potential influence on the individual and societal formation of opinions, the quality of online discussions has been a subject of widespread interest. From a deliberative perspective, rational argumentation and critical reflection are central criteria for good discourse. Drawing on research on the perception of arguments and the conditions of disagreement, we ask how argument strength is linked to the likelihood of receiving (reasoned) disagreement and whether the discussion norms and technical features set by the news organizations moderate this effect. Based on a manual content analysis of 14.690 user comments on nine German news websites, we find that comments with a higher argument strength are more likely to receive disagreement in general and reasoned disagreement in particular. Further, the levels of (reasoned) disagreement are higher on platforms with strong discussion norms and supporting technical features. The results show that the quality of a discussion can be related to both users’ argumentation and the decisions of the news organizations.
