Multispecies swards, comprised of different plant functional groups have comparable production potential to high N input L. perenne swards at reduced N when legumes are included. However, information on the appropriate management of multispecies swards is limited. The effect of differing management practices on the herbage dry‐matter (DM) production and botanical composition of different sward types was investigated using a 3 × 2 × 2 factorial design plot experiment. The experiment consisted of three sward types: L. perenne‐only receiving (LP; 250 kg N ha−1 a−1); L. perenne‐Trifolium repens (LP‐TR); multispecies sward containing L. perenne, Phleum pratense, Trifolium repens, Trifolium pratense, Plantago lanceolata and Cichorium intybus (MSS). LP‐TR and MSS received 90 kg N ha−1 a−1. Harvesting of plot herbage took place every 21 or 28 days to a defoliation height of 4 or 6 cm, over two growing seasons (March to November 2020 and 2021 inclusive). Annual herbage produced by both LP and LP‐TR was not significantly affected by defoliation frequency. However, MSS produced 1923 kg DM ha−1 a−1 more herbage when harvested less frequently. Unsown species contributed significantly less to the herbage DM of MSS compared to LP and LP‐TR and remained similar in 2020 and 2021, whereas the contribution of unsown species to herbage DM increased in LP and LP‐TR from 2020 to 2021, with noxious species more associated with LP and LP‐TR than MSS. Results demonstrate the role of multispecies swards in improving the sustainability of grass‐based agricultural systems in an environment of reduced fertilizer inputs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: In the Western Highlands of Cameroon (WHC), information on the nutritional value of fodder species consumed by ruminants is very limited. Methods: Through interviews with farmers and monitoring of animals on the range, information was obtained on the types of fodder resources consumed by the ruminants. Samples of each forage species were collected in 15 districts, mixed, chopped, and dried in a ventilated oven at 60°C, and then ground for chemical composition analysis. Results: Twenty‐two forage species were identified. Among these species, Vernonia amygdalina (29.43% ± 0.45% dry matter [DM]) and Pennisetum clandestinum (87.21% ± 1.33% DM) were, respectively, the highest in protein and neutral detergent fiber contents. Manihot esculenta was one of the most energy‐rich forages in terms of forage unit for lactation and forage unit for meat production. Hierarchical ascending classification revealed three main groups of forages, respectively, rich in crude fiber (Group 1), protein (Group 2), and energy (Group 3). Conclusions: The present study identified 22 forage species browsed by ruminants in WHC. Further studies should be carried out to determine the antinutritional factors and to evaluate their nutrient value using in vitro or in situ digestibility techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ruminants are born with a finite number of healthy ovarian follicles and oocytes (ovarian reserve) and germ cell proliferation in the developing foetal gonad predominantly occurs during early gestation. Two markers have been established to reliably estimate the size of the ovarian reserve in cattle: the number of antral follicles ≤3 mm in diameter recruited per follicular wave (Antral Follicle Count, AFC) and peripheral concentrations of the Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH). Studies that used one or both indicators show that the size of ovarian reserve varies greatly among age-matched individuals, but is highly repeatable in the same animal. Conditions during prenatal life are likely among the causes of such variation in the ovarian reserve. In addition, the size of the ovarian reserve is a moderately heritable trait in cattle. The association between ovarian reserve and fertility is controversial. Several studies indicate that cattle with a low ovarian reserve have phenotypic characteristics that are associated with suboptimal fertility. On the contrary, the presence and absence of a positive association between AFC and/or AMH and fertility measures (i.e. no. on services/conception, pregnancy rates, pregnancy loss) have been equally reported in cattle. In conclusion, the size of the ovarian reserve in the progeny can be enhanced by improving management of the dam from preconception to early gestation and also through genetic selection. However, although the ovarian reserve may be among the determinants of reproductive success in ruminants, the use of AFC/AMH as reliable predictors of fertility is yet to be established. Furthermore, the possibility that there is a complex interaction of AFC, AMH and reproduction has yet to be fully characterised and exploited to improve fertility in cattle., (Copyright © 2023 The Author(s).
