The charophytes in many regions of the world are still poorly understood. This hampers the synthesis of distributional and ecological datasets at worldwide and continental scales, as well as complicates the generalization of species concepts for widely distributed and local taxa. To fill in the blanks for charophytes in the Caucasus and to improve our knowledge of species distribution areas in Eurasia, a field survey and study of available specimens from Dagestan (North Caucasus, Russia) was conducted based on morphological observation using light and scanning electron microscopy and molecular genetic analyses allowing for the precise identification and testing of the presence of cryptic and undescribed taxa. Nineteen new localities for seven Chara species and one Tolypella species, seven new species, and one new genus were identified in the studied region, and one new species in the Caspian Sea region was found. Some species records changed the outline or filled in the gaps in species distribution data. The presence of species distributed mainly in central Eurasia (C. globata, C. neglecta) with mainly Mediterranean–Middle Eastern species (C. gymnophylla) is notable for this region, as well as for other studied regions of the Caucasus characterized by a mixture combination of species with different distribution patterns. Chara gymnophylla was frequent in Dagestan, similar to the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern regions. Small brackish waterbodies on the coast of the Caspian Sea, freshwater mountain rivers, small associated waterbodies, and water reservoirs are the main habitats of charophytes in the studied region. Based on habitat preference and distribution in the Caucasus, recommendations for the protection of some species were suggested. The lack of endemic species among charophytes from Dagestan and Caucasus contrasts with the flora of terrestrial magnoliophytes that is rich in species endemism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

CHAROPHYTA ,FLOODPLAINS ,HABITATS ,WATER temperature ,ALTITUDES - Abstract
In Serbia, almost all charophyte species belong to one of the IUCN categories. This study aimed to gather more knowledge about their floristic richness, distribution and ecology. During the survey, 262 localities were investigated in the Vojvodina province, northern Serbia. Seventeen charophyte species were found, out of which 16 were included in the analyses. The environmental matrix included 38 localities, each characterized by habitat type and 35 environmental parameters. The canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed six parameters as being statistically significant: substrate, altitude, depth, water temperature, temperature annual range and precipitation of the driest month. Together, these explain the 32.34% variability in the species composition and abundance data. Altitude and substrate contributed the most to this. Two main types of habitats were outlined by the analysis. Small and shallow temporary habitats in the river floodplains, at lower altitudes, with muddy and clayish substrate, belong to one type. These areas are inhabited by either very tolerant species, such as Chara vulgaris and C. globularis, or the so-called "spring" species of the genera Tolypella and Nitella. Habitats which are located at higher altitudes, when deeper and more permanent with a sandy substrate, such as sandpits and river habitats, belong to the second one. These areas are inhabited by species like Chara papillosa, C. hispida, and Nitellopsis obtusa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The French national strategy for biodiversity (2011–2020) identified Invasive Alien Species (IAS) as one of the main threats. Therefore, to provide practical measures in order to prevent and to control IAS is one of the main tasks. In this context, the administration of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region (PACA, south of France) wanted to bring consistency into the regional actions carried out on IAS. We present several steps needed to develop a regional strategy and an action plan adapted to the environmental, social, economic and political realities of this study area. Firstly, the lists of invasive and potential invasive alien plant species in the region have been established using two different scales: administrative and biogeographic. Those lists, identifying several groups of invasive and potential invasive alien species are based on three criteria for invasiveness. A regional survey of different professional sectors has also been carried out to identify all the stakeholders involved as well as their perceptions and expectations and to elaborate a regional assessment of action priorities concerning IAS. The development of the strategy took into account the status of the species, the type of environment in which they may be present (natural, semi-natural and anthropized areas) and the type of actions involved (prevention of introduction, management and control). This enables to guide and to hierarchize management actions according to the ecological, health and economic constraints. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A critical revision of charophytes collected in Slovakia from 1887 up to present, based on herbaria specimens, provided us with the opportunity to compile an updated checklist and to revaluate their threat status in order to obtain the current red list of charophytes of Slovakia. The data obtained will fill the gap in knowledge about these macroscopic algae in Central Europe. The revised list of charophytes includes 19 representatives of three genera: Chara (11), Nitella (7), and Nitellopsis (1). Following the latest IUCN red-list categories and criteria (version 3.1) and using the modified category regionally extinct (RE), derived from the category extinct (EX), 36.8% of charophytes are classified as RE (Chara connivens, C. subspinosa (=rudis), Nitella capillaris, N. confervacea, N. flexilis, N. gracilis, and N. opaca); 21% as EN (endangered; Chara braunii, Nitella mucronata, N. syncarpa, and Nitellopsis obtusa); 21% as VU (vulnerable; Chara contraria, C. gymnophylla, C. hispida, and C. virgata); 10.6% as NT (near-threatened; Chara globularis, C. vulgaris); and 5.3% as CR (critically endangered; Chara canescens) species; finally, 5.3% species could not be assessed (DD; Chara aspera). - Abstract
The maritime legal framework of General Average (GA) remains an enigmatic and overlooked process within the history of seaborne trade. An ancient rule that redates Roman Law, it continues to be operational today, in a largely unchanged state, mandating the redistribution of unexpected costs that arise during a maritime expedition amongst shipowners and merchants. In this detailed examination of Average procedures within the Italian maritime republic of Genoa, between the years 1590 and 1700, Through the Water and the Storm demonstrates how this rich data can be used to investigate the dynamics of Mediterranean seaborne trade.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Charophyta--Europe
- Abstract
This book covers whole Europe within its geographical limits, providing not only an overview about biogeography and recent taxonomic status of Charophyte species but also in-depth information about recent knowledge about ecology, ontogenesis, morphology, palaeontology and systematics of this group of algae. This is the first comprehensive treatment of European Charophytes. In addition, the reader for the first time is provided by definitions of terms applied to Charophytes, sorting out several previous confusions about terminology. Special attention was paid on oospores in order to exploit their potential for supporting species delineation as well as analysis of sediment records. A red list, dealing also with threats and habitat conditions, completes the book.Altogether more than 70 taxon are described in detail, each of the descriptions giving full information about morphology, habitat conditions, distribution as well as variability; important characters for determination are illustrated by photographs and drawings. Hints for correct determination are given in a separate para, allowing correct species delineation even for critical species. This, together with a set of determination keys, will allow beginners and practitioners to get familiar with the determination of Charophytes, being often regarded notoriously difficult in the past.Authored by a large group of 70 specialists from all over Europe and Overseas, a commonly agreed taxonomy is provided, and all debates about taxonomic status and nomenclatural problems have been discussed beforehand extensively. By this, a sound reference for applied aspects is given, allowing for reliable cross-country comparisons especially with respect to bioindication purposes but also serving ground for biogeographical research, biodiversity issues and the emerging field of elucidating the process of territorialisation of land plants. The authors hope that this book will become the reference work for the coming decades it was designed for.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This book offers a new look at the transformation of the classical world in Late Antiquity. It focuses on a particular region, rich in both archaeological and literary evidence, and examines the social, cultural and religious history of late antique southern Gaul through the lens of popular culture. Using material culture, comparative and theoretical material alongside the often dominant normative and prescriptive texts produced by the late antique church, Lucy Grig shines a fresh light on the period. She explores city and countryside alike as contexts for late antique popular culture, and consider a range of case-studies, including the vibrant late antique festival of the Kalends of January. In this way important questions of continuity, change and historical agency are brought to the fore. This title is part of the Flip it Open Programme and may also be available Open Access. - Abstract

- Abstract
This book seeks to contribute a multi-dimensional, multi-layered and gendered approach to the illicit economy in the historiography of early modern Europe.Using original source material from several countries, this volume concentrates on a border and transnational area—approximately the Lyon-Geneva-Turin triangle—located at the heart of European trade. It focuses on three products—salt, cotton and silk—all of which fuelled the black market between the last decades of the seventeenth century and the French Revolution. This volume offers an original contribution to wider studies of smuggling, illicit markets and women's economic roles by taking into account the economic life of remote mountain communities and industrious cities.Showing that irregular practices were a structural characteristic of early modern economies, it provides insight into the opportunities offered to women in a highly flexible economy where licit and illicit activities were intermingled in a very complex way. This research monograph is aimed at a historical audience and constitutes a useful resource for students and scholars interested in gender history, social and economic history, urban history and French studies.

- Abstract
The Hypogeum of Calaforno is one of the most intriguing structures of prehistoric Sicily, an underground sequence of 35 chambers preceded by a vestibule and a megalithic entrance, built in the Late Copper Age. The book presents the results of the investigations directed by Pietro Militello on behalf of the University of Catania inside the hypogeum between 2013-2017. In the first section, written by Pietro Militello, a description of the hypogeum is given. Through an architectural, functional and energetics analysis of the inner part of the hypogeum and the results of archaeological soundings, a complex history of use, reuse, abandonment and changes in use (funerary, religious, residential etc.) is reconstructed, spanning almost three millennia. At the same time, the publication of other previously unknown hypogea resituates the Hypogeum from its isolation in Sicilian prehistory. In the second section, written by the members of the research team, a detailed analysis is presented of the geology of the area, and the publication of prehistoric, protohistoric and medieval pottery recovered in the excavations, together with studies on architectural, faunal and anthropological remains. Two final chapters present a preliminary report on the work of the archaeological service of Ragusa in the outdoor area of the Hypogeum and in the wider region.

- Abstract
A dual approach, combining social anthropology and archaeology, reveals the banquet or ceremonial feast as a fully social phenomenon. In extraordinary circumstances, banquets - usually held in stratified societies with a sacrificial religion - bring together large numbers of guests, who are fed and watered on rare and expensive foods in large quantities, in order to honor someone or something, and to ostentatiously assert the power of the organizers. While this practice has been recognized in many societies around the world, living, ancient or extinct, it had not yet been the subject of a large-scale synthesis. It was therefore appropriate to take an interdisciplinary look at the ins and outs of the festive banquet in relation to the cosmogonies and social practices of the social spaces concerned. The nine essays collected here, from papers given at study days held in Strasbourg, contribute to the debate on important questions relating to the banquet, such as its temporality (cultural cycles or cosmogonic myths), its location (public or private sphere, open-air or indoors), commensality, hospitality, the type of products consumed and table manners, and finally the hypothesis that the organization of a banquet implies the existence of a hierarchical, sedentary society, with wealth (or chrematism), if not ostentation. The diversity of geo-cultural areas, chronological periods and case histories covered enable us to apprehend the banquet in all its multiple aspects, offering new food for thought and avenues for research.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
This second volume of the Tell el-Iswid excavations is devoted to the Naqada period remains in sector 4. It concerns a mud-brick building, dating essentially to the Naqada III A-B period. Three major phases of transformation were detected. The best represented is phase 2, which was reworked several times. Particular attention was paid to the structures which were burned. These architectural transformations are mirrored by changes in material culture (ceramics, lithic industry, small finds) in connection with data relating to the subsistence economy (fauna and plant micro-remains). Ceramics have been studied according to new approaches, in which classifications are based primarily on manufacturing techniques and the reconstruction of the'chaine operatoire', which makes it possible to better understand cultural identities and to go beyond the essentially chronological aims of traditional morpho-stylistic classifications. The work presented here is part of the review of data from excavations at the neighboring site of Tell el-Farkha and at Bouto in the western Delta. They contribute to shedding new light from the Delta on the socio-cultural transformations that affected the whole Nile valley in the last third of the 4th millennium BC.

Argiles. De la physique du matériau à l'expérimentation brings together the proceedings of four study days of the ‘Clay'Collective Program (2018-2020) of the CNRS Joint Research Unit, Archaeology and Sciences of Antiquity (UMR 7041 - ArScAn, Nanterre), on the theme of ‘studying materiality'. The study of this polymorphic material has focused on four complementary areas: physical properties, construction, artefacts and texts relating to clay. As a forum for cross-disciplinary exchange, the meetings and then the volume itself form and opportunity to share the continuities, specifics, technical and cultural convergences or divergences of working with clay. The three parts correspond to the themes covered during these days: I. Formation, structure, characterization, definitions of a material deals with the physics of clays, the geomorphology of clay landscapes, clay construction, the restoration of architectural remains, cuneiform tablets and clay objects, and finally mentions of clay in Mesopotamian texts, Linear B and Egyptian hieroglyphs. II. Uses of clays and clay soils: from ‘unfired'to ‘fired'is devoted to these two states of clay: ‘unfired'clay is explored through the geomorphology of the ‘clay country'that is Mesopotamia, and earthen architecture from Cyprus to Western Europe, from the Neolithic to Roman times is investigated; ‘fired'clay focuses on bricks and ceramics, which illustrate the transition between the two states, then on ovens and cooking devices, and the possible connections between Mesopotamian texts, the archaeology of the ancient Near East and experimentation. III. Reproduction in clay: reconstruction, protocol, experimentation retraces several experimental approaches around ceramics and construction in the Near Eastern, Minoan, Egyptian and Western worlds. Overall the book brings together 28 contributors, including university teachers, researchers, engineers, doctoral and post-doctoral students, attached to several teams of the Argiles unit as well as other laboratories and institutes in France and abroad. Each has enriched, through their specialism, their knowledge or their individual experience, an aspect of or an approach to clay and clay soils.

- Abstract
Normative, Atypical or Deviant? Interpreting Prehistoric and Protohistoric Child Burial Practices, the tenth volume in the SSCIP monograph series, explores the response of the living when dealing with the death of a child. This response is strongly connected to belief systems and concern for the fate of the deceased in the afterlife. The funerary rituals for each culture generally follow a prescribed format that will both satisfy the needs of the dead and ensure there are no negative consequences for the living. But how do we interpret burials that do not adhere to the recognised formula for their society? Can we find evidence that such differences involved positive or, indeed, negative emotions? Should atypical rites for children actually be considered normal since they are typical for their age cohort, differing only from those of adults, and perhaps simply reflect adult-centric interpretations of the past? The papers within the volume discuss these issues by focusing on juvenile burial practices in Europe and the Near East during recent prehistory and protohistory. The interpretation of normative, atypical or deviant is interrogated based on the context of the burials and the intentionality of the practice.

- Abstract
In the Footsteps of the Etruscans describes the archaeology of the countryside within a ten km radius of the small town of Tuscania near Rome, throwing light on the unrecorded lives of the generations of farmers and shepherds who have lived there. What was the character of prehistoric settlement prior to Etruscan urbanization? How did urbanization shape the lives of the'ordinary Etruscans'working the land, hardly ever addressed in Etruscan archaeology? What was the impact on these people of being absorbed into the expanding Roman empire and its globalised economic structures? How did the empire's collapse and the subsequent emergence of the nucleated medieval village affect Tuscania's rural population? The project's 7500-year'archaeological history', from the first farmers to those grappling with globalisation today, contributes eloquently to our understanding of how Mediterranean peoples have constantly shaped their landscape, and been shaped by it.

- Abstract
Mediterranean inhabitants depend on natural resources for their livelihoods. Livestock production and forestry are key sources of income yet are carried out under harsh conditions such as limited land resources, marginal agricultural conditions, isolation, and scant equipment and infrastructure. Livestock is of particular importance in mountain production systems as they convert plant biomass into useful products for humans such as milk, meat and draught power. These products are key to the regions'sustainability. The main topics discussed in this book are: Human geography of Mediterranean mountain territories. Livestock production and natural resources. Improving the efficiency of livestock systems in Mediterranean mountain areas. Applications of new technologies for environmentally sound management of livestock and natural resources. The role livestock plays in rural development and in safeguarding natural resources.

- Abstract

- Abstract
This book studies the change in Mediterranean port cities, from the nineteenth century when they flourished as a result of international economic relations and advances in transportation technology, through the twentieth century when the nation-states were at their prime time. This trajectory with two distinct parts belongs as a whole to what we call the modern times. Whereas in the first phase, Mediterranean port cities became hubs of spontaneous urban complexity and social diversity thanks to reciprocal relations that made them the places of cultural exchange, where people from different parts of the Mediterranean met one another, during the second, because of the interruption of such connectivities and major demographic changes the same cities experienced by way of massive migration, they became less and less unlike other cities with which they shared the same geography in general and the nation-state territory, in particular. Over the last few decades, with a new roundof globalization, port cities increasingly find themselves facing new opportunities and connectivities, the realization of which would make them once again different, albeit in variegated ways and to degrees. Our narrative foregrounds contexts and connectivities with specific attention paid to mobility, fragility, and precarity. The purpose of this book is to highlight commonalities of and differences among the select Mediterranean port cities, with a focus on the role of social actors, changing economic relations and spatial characteristics and practices.

- Abstract
The archaeological study of quarries focuses mainly on the reconstruction of the extraction process, while rock-hewn spaces have often been approached from the point of view of architectural styles or art-history. Nevertheless, a holistic structural approach to the study of these spaces could allow a better understanding of the agency of those who carved the stone. Stone quarries and rock-cut sites have rarely been included in global studies of historical landscapes and few are the forums dedicated to the theoretical and methodological debate over the importance that these sites have for the understanding of past societies. To fill the gap, the proceedings volume aims at providing new data on sites located in Africa (Ethiopia, and Egypt), Europe (France, Croatia, Italy, Spain) and Asia (Turkey, Saudi Arabia) studied with a diachronic approach, as well as new theoretical reflections for the international debate on the archaeological investigation of rock-cut spaces and stone quarries. Two directions structure this volume: the analysis of the individual rock walls, considering the study of tool traces as a proxy for understanding the carving phases, as well as the analysis of the structure (site/quarry) as a whole, by contextualizing the results of the study of the single walls. The volume mainly targets researchers who are willing to discover quarries and rock-cut sites as aspects of the same mining phenomenon: places in which specific empirical and handcrafting knowledge related to stone working is expressed and conveyed, but also a wider audience that is interested in these peculiar and impressive sites.

- Abstract

- Abstract

- Abstract
Perchement et Réalités Fortifiées en Mediterranee et en Europe, Vème-Xème Siècles / Fortified Hilltop Settlements in the Mediterranean and in Europe (5th-10th centuries) is the result of the International Congress held in October 2019 in Roquebrune-sur-Argens about the fortified hilltop settlements of Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. The congress brought together many of the most prominent scholars in the field (principally archaeologists) to present both brand new data and syntheses on wide contexts throughout the European continent, the Mediterranean basin and beyond. The book stands as the most recent and comprehensive update on the ‘perchement'(i.e. the fortified hilltop settlement) and it will represent a benchmark for scholars working on this topic for decades to come.
