Abstract

The digitalization of energy sectors has expanded the coding responsibilities for power engineers and researchers. This research article explores the potential of leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) to alleviate this burden. Here, we propose LLM-based frameworks for different programming tasks in power systems. For well-defined and routine tasks like the classic unit commitment (UC) problem, we deploy an end-to-end framework to systematically assesses four leading LLMs-ChatGPT 3.5, ChatGPT 4.0, Claude and Google Bard in terms of success rate, consistency, and robustness. For complex tasks with limited prior knowledge, we propose a human-in-the-loop framework to enable engineers and LLMs to collaboratively solve the problem through interactive-learning of method recommendation, problem de-composition, subtask programming and synthesis. Through a comparative study between two frameworks, we find that human-in-the-loop features like web access, problem decomposition with field knowledge and human-assisted code synthesis are essential as LLMs currently still fall short in acquiring cutting-edge and domain-specific knowledge to complete a holistic problem-solving project.

2. Stability Constrained OPF in Microgrids: A Chance Constrained Optimization Framework with Non-Gaussian Uncertainty

Abstract

To figure out the stability issues brought by renewable energy sources (RES) with non-Gaussian uncertainties in isolated microgrids, this paper proposes a chance constrained stability constrained optimal power flow (CC-SC-OPF) model. Firstly, we propose a bi-level optimization problem, of which the upper level aims to minimize the expected generation cost without violating the stability chance constraint; the lower level concerns about the stability index given by a semi-definite program (SDP). Secondly, we apply the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) to handle the non-Gaussian RES uncertainties and introduce analytical sensitivity analysis to reformulate chance constraints with respect to stability index and operational variables into linear deter-ministic versions. By incorporating linearized constraints, the bi-level model can be efficiently solved by Benders decomposition-based approach. Thirdly, we design a supplementary corrective countermeasure to compensate the possible control error caused by the linear approximation. Simulation results on the 33-bus microgrid reveal that compared to benchmarking approaches, the proposed model converges 30 times faster with more accurate solutions.

Abstract

The increasing growth in installed capacity for renewable energy sources has progressively replaced traditional thermal power units as synchronous power contributors. This transition has led to a reduction in system inertia and resources for frequency regulation, creating a need for renewable energy and energy storage to participate in system frequency modulation. Empirical studies indicate that the current market mechanism for frequency modulation auxiliary services, which predominantly rely on thermal power, is suboptimal for leveraging the unique capabilities of diverse frequency modulation resources. This inadequacy hinders the power industry's pursuit of the "dual carbon" goals -- carbon neutrality and carbon peak. Hence, this paper proposes a joint clearing model for the involvement of renewable energy and energy storage in the frequency modulation auxiliary service market. It considers performance differences and employs the Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to guide the optimization of the weights of frequency modulation performance indicators for various frequency modulation resources. This approach allows renewable energy, energy storage, and thermal power to maximize the benefits of their own differentiated advantages in various frequency modulation performance indicators. Consequently, this fosters an increased share of renewable energy within the system while ensuring frequency stability, thereby expediting the achievement of the power industry's "dual carbon" goals. Finally, computational analyses substantiate that the proposed joint clearing model, accounting for performance differentials, can enhance the renewable energy share in the system and simultaneously reduce the societal costs associated with frequency modulation services. Abstract

The rapid digitalization of energy sectors has led to a significant increase in coding tasks for engineers and researchers. This research article explores the potential of leveraging ChatGPT, an advanced AI language model, to revolutionize programming in the energy domain. Here, we propose a generic interactive programming framework based on ChatGPT, covering three distinct applications in energy systems ranging from simple to complex. For routine tasks such as daily unit commitment, ChatGPT can increase efficiency by automatic modelling, coding, debugging and scaling and thus re-ducing repetitive work. For complex tasks such as decentralized optimization of an integrated energy system (IES) where engineers have no prior knowledge, ChatGPT can reduce the learning cost by recommending appropriate algo-rithms. For new problems without readily available solutions such as ultra-fast unit commitment, ChatGPT can organize potential technology roadmap and provide algorithm recommendation and auto-coding for each step. The findings demonstrate the potential of ChatGPT as a powerful tool in the domain of energy sectors in terms of auto coding, new knowledge learning and new problem solving.

17. Coordinated Operation of the Multiple Types of Energy Storage Systems in the Green-Seaport Energy-Logistics Integrated System

Abstract

The power fluctuations and utilization of renewable energy sources (RESs) in green seaports call for more flexible facilities to reduce their overall operation costs and carbon emissions. This paper proposes a robustly coordinated operation strategy for the multiple types of energy storage systems in the green-seaport energy-logistics integrated system to minimize the daily operation cost and carbon emission under the carbon trading policy, considering the uncertain power of local loads (LLs), photovoltaics (PVs), as well as wind turbines (WTs). At the day-ahead decision stage, the power of all energy storages, electro-thermal conversion (ETC) unit, reefer containers, quay cranes (QCs), yard cranes (YCs) are optimized under the worst case. At the intra-day decision stage, the power of tie line (TL), PVs, and WTs are determined sequentially according to short-leading-time predictions of uncertain values. The day-ahead optimization is formulated as a robust optimization problem solved by column-and-constraint generation (C&CG) algorithm, whereas the intra-day optimization is solved as a deterministic optimization problem. Numerical simulations are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Simulating results show that the proposed strategy can achieve the lowest cost and guarantee the feasibility of the operation scheme under different scenarios.

Abstract

High intermittence of renewable energy resources (RESs) and restriction for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have significantly challenged the operations of traditional diesel generator (DG) based microgirds. This paper considers an emission-free microgid with hybrid hydrogen-battery energy storage (HHBES) and proposes a coordinated operational strategy to minimize its daily operation costs. In addition to the electricity purchase costs in the day-ahead market and the operational costs of RESs, the total degradation cost of HHBES is also included in the cost calculation. The proposed operational strategy consists of two coordinated stages. At the day-ahead stage, the schedule for the tie-line power is exchanged with the main grid, the output power of the fuel cell (FC) and the input power of the electrolysis device (ED) are optimized under the worst case of uncertain power output from RESs and power demand from electricity loads (ELs). At the intra-day stage, the battery power is determined according to the short-term prediction for the power of RESs and ELs. The problem is formulated as a robust optimization model and solved by a two-level column-and-constraint-generation (CCG) algorithm. Numerical simulations using Australian energy market operator (AEMO) data are carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy. Abstract

The complex energy conversion and the volatility of renewable energy/load bring great challenges to the operation of the park‐level integrated energy system (PIES). To overcome this challenge, this paper proposes a multi‐timescale flexible dispatching method to fully exploit the flexibility of PIES in the energy cascade utilization mode. The cascade utilization model for energy flow is firstly established to analyse the coupling and complementary of heterogeneous energy. On this basis, the supply‐demand general equations of multi‐energy flexibility are proposed, which accurately quantify the ability to cope with uncertainty through mutual flexibility. Through coordinated complementation and mutual exchange of multi‐grade flexibility, the system realizes the suppression of random power fluctuations. The scheduling model includes day‐ahead dispatch and intraday multi‐time scale dispatch, which can satisfy the adjustment speed requirements of different energy. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively enhances the flexibility and economy of system operation. The flexible demand for energy of all grades can be satisfied. Compared with the flexible dispatch in the triple energy supply structure, the operating cost is reduced by 9.07%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
