Objectives: Chlorhexidine (CHX)‐based products are the most effective chemical agents used in plaque control and oral disinfection. One of their side effects is tooth and restoration staining. For this reason, CHX products with anti‐discolouration systems (ADS) have been developed. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare different CHX‐based products (gel and mouthwash) with or without ADS in composite colour modification. Methods: Two hundred specimens were created, 100 of which were made of packable composite and 100 of flowable composite. After 24 h, colour coordinates (L*, a*, b*, C*, h°) were recorded using a spectrophotometer (T0). Then, all samples were subjected to a CHX/tea staining model and immersed in human saliva for 2 min. Composite specimens were divided in 10 groups (N = 20). Control groups (PC, FC) were soaked in distilled water and test groups (PG, PGads, FG, FGads, PM, PMads, FM and FMads) were immersed in CHX‐based solutions or brushed with CHX gel. Then the cycle was repeated 6 times, and colour differences (ΔEab and ΔE00) were finally calculated. Results: Through flowable composites, FC and FG showed the highest colour differences, respectively ΔEab = 3.48 ± 1.0, ΔE00 = 2.24 ± 0.6 and ΔEab = 2.95 ± 1.3, ΔE00 = 1.53 ± 0.6. In the composite groups instead, PM and PMads showed the highest colour differences, respectively ΔEab = 2.78 ± 1.3, ΔE00 = 1.94 ± 0.8 and ΔEab = 2.71 ± 1.4, ΔE00 = 1.84 ± 0.9. Conclusions: CHX‐containing products are able to cause stains on restorative composite materials. Discolouration is more likely to occur in flowable composites than packable composites, and ADS‐containing products cause fewer pigmentations than CHX products without ADS. Packable composites showed more staining after mouthwash treatment, whereas flowable composites underwent higher discolouration after treatment with gels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: It is crucial to distinguish type-1 myocardial infarction (T1MI) from type-2 myocardial infarction (T2MI) at admission and during hospitalization to avoid unnecessary invasive exams and inappropriate admissions to the acute cardiac care unit., Objectives: The purpose of the study was to define a simple profile derived from commonly used biomarkers to differentiate T1MI from T2MI., Methods: We prospectively enrolled in an observational study 213 iconsecutive patients with a provisional diagnosis of non-ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) admitted to the Cardiology Department. A final diagnosis of T1MI, T2MI, and non-ischemic acute myocardial injury (NAMI) was given based on clinical and instrumental findings. We assessed high-sensitivity Troponin I (hs-cTnI), Creatine Kinase MB (CK-MB), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), N-Terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP)., Results: A final diagnosis of T1MI was assigned to 77 patients, T2MI to 60 patients, and NAMI to 76 patients; mean age was not significantly different between groups (73 vs. 71 years), female were more prevalent in the T2MI/NAMI group (53 % vs. 34 %, p < 0.01). Hs-cTnI peak/upper limit of normal (ULN) (559 ± 770 vs. 286 ± 429; p = 0.04), hs-cTnI peak/CRP ratio (114 ± 337 vs. 83 ± 430; p < 0.001), hs-cTnI peak/PCT ratio (12,592 ± 21,467 vs. 4,609 ± 17,284; p < 0.001), and hs-cTnI peak/NTproBNP ratio (0.7 ± 1.6 vs. 0.3 ± 0.6; p < 0.01) differentiated T1MI from T2MI Hs-cTnI peak/ULN (559 ± 770 vs. 271 ± 412; p < 0.01), hs-cTnI peak/PCT ratio (12,592 ± 21,468 vs. 3,570 ± 12,469; p < 0.001), hs-cTnI peak/NTproBNP ratio (0.7 ± 1.6 vs. 0.3 ± 1.3; p < 0.001) and hs-cTnI peak/CRP (114 ± 337 vs. 48 ± 288; p < 0.001) differentiated T1MI from T2MI + NAMI. Hs-cTnI peak/PCT ratio was a predictor of T1MI, a multivariable logistic regression analysis (OR 1.03, 95 % CI 1.01-1.06, p < 0.05) with an accuracy of 0.704 (95 % CI 0.626-0.782, p < 0.001). Composite resins are the material of choice for direct restorations, and their success depends mainly on their color stability, since discoloration causes color mismatch, and consequent patient dissatisfaction. A single- and a multi-shade resin were compared in order to evaluate their pigmentation after immersion in staining substances and to investigate the effect of the polymerization time on their color stability. Two-hundred-and-forty composite specimens were created, half made of a single-shade (Group ONE, n = 120) and half of a multi-shade composite (Group OXP, n = 120). Each group was further divided into ONE30 (n = 60) and OXP30 (n = 60), polymerized for 30″, and ONE80 (n = 60) and OXP80 (n = 60), polymerized for 80″. Randomly, the specimens were immersed in turmeric solution, soy sauce, energy drink, or artificial saliva. By means of a spectrophotometer, ΔE 00 and WI d were calculated at 24 h (T 0 ), at 7 (T 1 ), and 30 (T 2 ) days. Single-shade composites showed statistically significant differences in color change from the turmeric solution, energy drink, and soy sauce than the multi-shade composites ( p < 0.005), showing a higher discoloration potential. The polymerization time did not have significative effects on color stability. Single-shade composites showed more color change than multi-shade systems after immersion in staining substances, and the curing time did not influence color variations.

Impaired pulmonary circulation hemodynamics are characteristic of pulmonary hypertension (PH). We therefore sought to evaluate possible correlations between endothelial function noninvasively assessed by brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and hemodynamic parameters at right-sided cardiac catheterization in patients with clinically suspected PH. Consecutive outpatients with suspected PH were enrolled in the study. In all patients, endothelial function was assessed by FMD and hemodynamic parameters (pulmonary artery pressure [PAP]); pulmonary vascular resistances [PVR]) were derived by right-sided cardiac catheterization. For this study, 95 consecutive patients with suspected PH were enrolled (mean age 63 ± 13 years, 58% male) and included in the analysis. FMD values were significantly correlated with systolic (s)PAP levels (r = -0.29, p = 0.016); correlation with PVR was of borderline significance (r = -0.21, p = 0.78). After multivariable regression analysis including age, gender, tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion and peak tricuspid regurgitation velocity (peak TRV), and FMD, the latter remained significantly correlated with systolic pulmonary artery pressure (sPAP) values (B = -47, p = 0.02). After classifying patients according to median levels of peak TRV and FMD into 3 groups (neither, either, or both impaired), progressively increased levels of sPAP, mean PAP, and PVR were found (p for trend <0.001 in all cases). FMD values were inversely related to sPAP levels in a small population of patients with clinically suspected PH. We tested an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy to control European foulbrood (EFB) in honey bees. Colonies affected by EFB were assigned to two homogenous groups: an oxytetracycline-treated group (1.5 g OTC/hive) that underwent partial shook swarm (PSS) in combination with queen caging (QC) and an untreated group where only two beekeeping techniques, PSS and QC, were applied. The consumption of sucrose solution, the strength of the colonies, side effects of the mentioned techniques, clinical as well as subclinical relapses of EFB, and the amount of OTC residues in the honey were assessed over a 7-month-long monitoring period. Regarding the consumption of the sucrose solution, there was no significant difference between the OTC-treated and untreated groups. The strength of the untreated colonies was consistently but not significantly higher than those treated with OTC. PSS combined with QC resulted in various side effects in both groups: queen loss (52%), absconding (8%), and drone-laying queen (4%). Untreated colonies (16.7%) showed clinical EFB relapses 4 months after the application of PSS along with QC, while 15.4% of the OTC-treated colonies were confirmed EFB-positive by PCR. OTC residues were detected in the honey yielded in the cases of both groups. Two months after the PSS, the amount of OTC residues in the untreated group was 0.6 ± 0.2 µg/kg, while that in the OTC-treated group amounted to 5.8 ± 11.6 µg/kg; both results are below the maximum residue limit (MRL) of 100 ppb considered in the EU for cascade use.

Food supplements should not contain substances considered unsafe or pose a health risk to consumers. In recent years illegal adulterants have been found in various functional foods without notification of their presence or amount in the labelling. In this study, a validated method was developed and applied as a screening method to detect 124 forbidden substances belonging to 13 classes of compounds in food supplements. Liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and a simple and rapid extraction protocol was applied to 110 food supplements collected from the internet market or during official controls in Italy. The percentage of non-compliant samples was 4.5%, relatively high compared with the official control results for these substances usually obtained on other food matrices. The results suggested the need to strengthen controls in this field to detect food supplement adulteration, which represents a potential health risk for the consumer.

A new, simple and sensitive method for determining and confirming methylene blue and its analogues such as azure A, azure B, azure C, thionine, and new methylene blue in fish muscles have been developed. The method is based on acetonitrile extraction followed by extract purification using dispersive solid-phase extraction (dSPE) with basic aluminium oxide (ALN) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) using primary and secondary amines (PSA) sorbent in matrix adsorption mode. The separation and detection of the dyes in the fish extract are achieved within 5 min by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) using an octadecyl analytical column with a mixture of acetonitrile, methanol and 0.1% formic acid as a mobile phase in gradient elution. The developed method has been in-house validated according to European law. The method recovery for fish muscle was 98.3-103.1%, whereas the decision limit (CCα) was from 0.45 to 0.49 µg kg -1 .

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the occlusal precision of computer-aided-design/ computer-assisted-manufacturing (CAD/CAM) milled versus 3D printed polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) temporary prosthetic crowns , starting from the same digital CAD design., Materials and Methods: The study sample included 34 patients presenting 34 premolars in need of prosthetic rehabilitation: a total of 68 temporary crowns were manufactured, 34 of which milled and 34 printed. Immediately after manufacturing, the milled and printed provisionals were scanned with a desktop scanner (E1, 3Shape) to obtain STL files, that were superimposed to the original CAD design in order to identify the occlusal trueness (Analysis A). A second occlusal comparison was performed by scanning both kind of provisional after being placed intraorally with Trios scanner (3 Shape); intraoral scans were obtained in order to compare STL files of provisionals before and after occlusal adjustments (Analysis B).  The occlusal trueness was identified at three reference points, P1 (vestibular cusp), P2 (palatal / lingual cusp), P3 (central fossa). The statistical analysis was performed using the R 3.4.3 statistical software (The R Foundation for Statistical Computing), with a significance level of p <0.05., Results: Overall, the printed crowns showed lower occlusal differences than the milled crowns, when compared to the CAD design file, with a statistically significant difference in P1 (difference of 0.025 ± 0.046 mm), P2 (difference of 0.027 ± 0 0.044 mm) and P3 ( difference of 0.018 ± 0.050) for Analysis A (p <0.05). In the Analysis B the direct comparison between the degree of average difference between the pre-adjustment and the post-occlusal adjustment of the milled and printed crowns shows that the printed crowns have lower occlusal mean difference values in all three points compared to the milled ones (difference of 0.146 ± 0.273 mm in P1, 0.285 ± 0.360 mm in P2 and 0.257 ± 0.277 mm in P3)., Conclusions: Within the limitation of this study, the data obtained showed a better occlusal surface dimensional accuracy of the 3D printed provisional crowns, when compared to the milled ones. Comparing the results obtained, it is possible to assume that the intraoral scans also had a contribution to occlusion, beside the manufacturing method. 3D printing can be successfully applied for manufacturing temporary PMMA crowns., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
