The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration aims to measure for the first time the shift and width induced on the $1s$ level of kaonic deuterium by the strong interaction. In the preliminary phase to the experiment, a test run using a Helium-4 target was performed to optimize the performance of the full experimental apparatus. This preliminary study highlighted the possibility to measure transition lines coming from intermediate mass kaonic atoms, such as kaonic carbon and kaonic aluminum. In order to measure transitions where strong interaction is manifesting at higher energies, out of the energy range of the SIDDHARTA-2 apparatus, the collaboration is testing a new detector system which exploits a novel compound semiconductor, the Cadmium Zinc Telluride. The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration built a new cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT, CdZnTe)-based X-ray detection system, used for the first time in the DA$\Phi$NE electron-positron collider at INFN-LNF. The aim of this work is to show that these detectors present optimal long- and short-term linearity and stability to perform precise spectroscopic measurements in a collider environment. The spectra used as references for calibration are reported, and the results about the linearity and stability studies are presented. It is also discussed and showed what is the proper function to describe all the effects that alter the Gaussian shape in semiconductors, particularly evident in the CZT case. Good residuals and resolutions were obtained for all the calibrations. In a test run with the source and the collider beam on, it was demonstrated that the calibrations made with beam off are optimal also when the beam is on, and the actual systematics in a physics run were estimated. These promising results show the potentialities of this detector in the high rate environment of a particle collider, and pave the way for the use of CZT detectors in kaonic atoms researches and in accelerators, with applications for particle and nuclear physics., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables

Sound is an essential sensing element for many organisms in nature, and multiple species have evolved organic structures that create complex acoustic scattering and dispersion phenomena to emit and perceive sound unambiguously. To date, it has not proven possible to design artificial scattering structures that rival the performance of those found in organic structures. Contrarily, most sound manipulation relies on active transduction in fluid media rather than relying on passive scattering principles, as are often found in nature. In this work, we utilize computational morphogenesis to synthesize complex energy-efficient wavelength-sized single-material scattering structures that passively decompose radiated sound into its spatio-spectral components. Specifically, we tailor an acoustic rainbow structure with "above unity" efficiency and an acoustic wavelength-splitter. We prove a large deviations principle for the solution to the beating NLS equation on the torus with random initial data supported on two Fourier modes. When these modes have different initial variance, we prove that the resonant energy exchange between them increases the likelihood of extreme wave formation. Our results show that nonlinear focusing mechanisms can lead to tail fattening of the probability measure of the sup-norm of the solution to a nonlinear dispersive equation.

In this work we present the study of $p\Lambda$ and $pp\Lambda$ scattering processes using femtoscopic correlation functions. This observable has been recently used to access the low-energy interaction of hadrons emitted in the final state of high-energy collisions, delivering unprecedented precision information of the interaction among strange hadrons. The formalism for particle pairs is well established and it relates the measured correlation functions with the scattering wave function and the emission source. In the present work we analyze the $NN\Lambda$ scattering in free space and relate the corresponding wave function to the $pp\Lambda$ correlation measurement performed by the ALICE collaboration. The three-body problem is solved using the hyperspherical adiabatic basis. Regarding the $p\Lambda$ and $pp\Lambda$ interactions, different models are used and their impact on the correlation function is studied. The three body force considered in this work is anchored to describe the binding energy of the hypertriton and to give a good description of the two four-body hypernuclei. As a main result we have observed a huge, low-energy peak in the $pp\Lambda$ correlation function, mainly produced by the $J^\pi=1/2^+$ three-body state. The study of this peak from an experimental as well as a theoretical point of view will provide important constraints to the two- and three-body interactions., Comment: Submitted for publication

We provide a rigorous justification of various kinetic regimes exhibited by the nonlinear Schr\"{o}dinger equation with an additive stochastic forcing and a viscous dissipation. The importance of such damped-driven models stems from their wide empirical use in studying turbulence for nonlinear wave systems. The force injects energy into the system at large scales, which is then transferred across scales, thanks to the nonlinear wave interactions, until it is eventually dissipated at smaller scales. The presence of such scale-separated forcing and dissipation allows for the constant flux of energy in the intermediate scales, known as the inertial range, which is the focus of the vast amount of numerical and physical literature on wave turbulence. Roughly speaking, our results provide a rigorous kinetic framework for this turbulent behavior by proving that the stochastic dynamics can be effectively described by a deterministic damped-driven kinetic equation, which carries the full picture of the turbulent energy dynamic across scales (like cascade spectra or other flux solutions). The analysis extends previous works in the unperturbed setting arXiv:1912.09518-arXiv:2301.07063 to the above empirically motivated damped driven setting. Here, in addition to the size $L$ of the system, and the strength $\lambda$ of the nonlinearity, an extra thermodynamic parameter has to be included in the kinetic limit ($L\to \infty, \lambda\to 0$), namely the strength $\nu$ of the forcing and dissipation. Various regimes emerge depending on the relative sizes of $L$, $\lambda$ and $\nu$, which give rise to different kinetic equations. Two major novelties of this work is the extension of the Feynman diagram analysis to additive stochastic objects, and the sharp asymptotic development of the leading terms in that expansion.

In this short article we present the theory of sparse representations recovery in convex regularized optimization problems introduced in (Carioni and Del Grande, arXiv:2311.08072, 2023). We focus on the scenario where the unknowns belong to Banach spaces and measurements are taken in Hilbert spaces, exploring the properties of minimizers of optimization problems in such settings. Specifically, we analyze a Tikhonov-regularized convex optimization problem, where $y_0$ are the measured data, $w$ denotes the noise, and $\lambda$ is the regularization parameter. By introducing a Metric Non-Degenerate Source Condition (MNDSC) and considering sufficiently small $\lambda$ and $w$, we establish Exact Sparse Representation Recovery (ESRR) for our problems, meaning that the minimizer is unique and precisely recovers the sparse representation of the original data. We then emphasize the practical implications of this theoretical result through two novel applications: signal demixing and super-resolution with Group BLASSO. These applications underscore the broad applicability and significance of our result, showcasing its potential across different domains.

Probabilistic prediction aims to compute predictive distributions rather than single point predictions. These distributions enable practitioners to quantify uncertainty, compute risk, and detect outliers. However, most probabilistic methods assume parametric responses, such as Gaussian or Poisson distributions. When these assumptions fail, such models lead to bad predictions and poorly calibrated uncertainty. In this paper, we propose Treeffuser, an easy-to-use method for probabilistic prediction on tabular data. The idea is to learn a conditional diffusion model where the score function is estimated using gradient-boosted trees. The conditional diffusion model makes Treeffuser flexible and non-parametric, while the gradient-boosted trees make it robust and easy to train on CPUs. Treeffuser learns well-calibrated predictive distributions and can handle a wide range of regression tasks -- including those with multivariate, multimodal, and skewed responses. We study Treeffuser on synthetic and real data and show that it outperforms existing methods, providing better calibrated probabilistic predictions. We further demonstrate its versatility with an application to inventory allocation under uncertainty using sales data from Walmart. Topological Data Analysis (TDA) allows us to extract powerful topological and higher-order information on the global shape of a data set or point cloud. Tools like Persistent Homology or the Euler Transform give a single complex description of the global structure of the point cloud. However, common machine learning applications like classification require point-level information and features to be available. In this paper, we bridge this gap and propose a novel method to extract node-level topological features from complex point clouds using discrete variants of concepts from algebraic topology and differential geometry. An HPGe detector equipped with a transistor reset preamplifier and readout with a CAEN DT5781 fast pulse digitizer was employed in the measurement of X-rays from kaonic lead at the DA$\Phi$NE $e^+e^-$ collider at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of INFN. A thin scintillator in front of a lead target was used to select kaons impinging on it and to form the trigger for the HPGe detector. We present the results of the kaonic lead feasibility measurement, where we show that the resolution of the HPGe detector in regular beam conditions remains the same as that without the beam and that a satisfactory background reduction can be achieved. This study provides accurate results for the electronic stopping cross-sections of H, He, N, and Ne in silicon in low to intermediate energy ranges using various non-perturbative theoretical methods, including real-time time-dependent density functional theory, transport cross-section, and induced-density approach. Recent experimental findings [Ntemou \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 107}, 155145 (2023)] revealed discrepancies between the estimates of density functional theory and observed values. We show that these discrepancies vanish by considering the nonuniform electron density of the silicon deeper bands for ion velocities approaching zero ($v \to 0$). This indicates that mechanisms such as ``elevator'' and ``promotion,'' which can dynamically excite deeper-band electrons, are active, enabling a localized free electron gas to emulate ion energy loss, as pointed out by [Lim \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 116}, 043201 (2016)]. The observation and the description of a velocity-proportionality breakdown in electronic stopping cross-sections at very low velocities are considered to be a signature of the deeper-band electrons' contributions.

Transport phenomena (e.g., fluid flows) are governed by time-dependent partial differential equations (PDEs) describing mass, momentum, and energy conservation, and are ubiquitous in many engineering applications. However, deep learning architectures are fundamentally incompatible with the simulation of these PDEs. This paper clearly articulates and then solves this incompatibility. The local-dependency of generic transport PDEs implies that it only involves local information to predict the physical properties at a location in the next time step. However, the deep learning architecture will inevitably increase the scope of information to make such predictions as the number of layers increases, which can cause sluggish convergence and compromise generalizability. This paper aims to solve this problem by proposing a distributed data scoping method with linear time complexity to strictly limit the scope of information to predict the local properties. The numerical experiments over multiple physics show that our data scoping method significantly accelerates training convergence and improves the generalizability of benchmark models on large-scale engineering simulations. Specifically, over the geometries not included in the training data for heat transferring simulation, it can increase the accuracy of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) by 21.7 \% and that of Fourier Neural Operators (FNOs) by 38.5 \% on average.

In this paper, we consider the long-term behavior of some special solutions to the Wave Kinetic Equation (WKE). This equation provides a mesoscopic description of wave systems interacting nonlinearly via the cubic NLS equation. Escobedo and Vel\'azquez showed that, starting with initial data given by countably many Dirac masses, solutions remain a linear combination of countably many Dirac masses at all times. Moreover, there is convergence to a single Dirac mass at long times. The first goal of this paper is to give quantitative rates for the speed of said convergence. Estimating the sound absorption in situ relies on accurately describing the measured sound field. Evidence suggests that modeling the reflection of impinging spherical waves is important, especially for compact measurement systems. This article proposes a method for estimating the sound absorption coefficient of a material sample by mapping the sound pressure, measured by a microphone array, to a distribution of monopoles along a line in the complex plane. The proposed method is compared to modeling the sound field as a superposition of two sources (a monopole and an image source). The obtained inverse problems are solved with Tikhonov regularization, with automatic choice of the regularization parameter by the L-curve criterion. The sound absorption measurement is tested with simulations of the sound field above infinite and finite porous absorbers. The approaches are compared to the plane-wave absorption coefficient and the one obtained by spherical wave incidence. Experimental analysis of two porous samples and one resonant absorber is also carried out in situ. Four arrays were tested with an increasing aperture and number of sensors. It was demonstrated that measurements are feasible even with an array with only a few microphones. The discretization of the integral equation led to a more accurate reconstruction of the sound pressure and particle velocity at the sample's surface. In this study, we introduce a method for estimating sound fields in reverberant environments using a conditional invertible neural network (CINN). Sound field reconstruction can be hindered by experimental errors, limited spatial data, model mismatches, and long inference times, leading to potentially flawed and prolonged characterizations. Further, the complexity of managing inherent uncertainties often escalates computational demands or is neglected in models. Our approach seeks to balance accuracy and computational efficiency, while incorporating uncertainty estimates to tailor reconstructions to specific needs. By training a CINN with Monte Carlo simulations of random wave fields, our method reduces the dependency on extensive datasets and enables inference from sparse experimental data. The CINN proves versatile at reconstructing Room Impulse Responses (RIRs), by acting either as a likelihood model for maximum a posteriori estimation or as an approximate posterior distribution through amortized Bayesian inference. Compared to traditional Bayesian methods, the CINN achieves similar accuracy with greater efficiency and without requiring its adaptation to distinct sound field conditions.

The advent of Large Language Models (LLMs) started a serious discussion among educators on how LLMs would affect, e.g., curricula, assessments, and students' competencies. Generative AI and LLMs also raised ethical questions and concerns for computing educators and professionals. This experience report presents an assignment within a course on professional competencies, including some related to ethics, that computing master's students need in their careers. For the assignment, student groups discussed the ethical process by Lennerfors et al. by analyzing a case: a fictional researcher considers whether to attend the real CHI 2024 conference in Hawaii. The tasks were (1) to participate in in-class discussions on the case, (2) to use an LLM of their choice as a discussion partner for said case, and (3) to document both discussions, reflecting on their use of the LLM. Students reported positive experiences with the LLM as a way to increase their knowledge and understanding, although some identified limitations. The LLM provided a wider set of options for action in the studied case, including unfeasible ones. The LLM would not select a course of action, so students had to choose themselves, which they saw as coherent. From the educators' perspective, there is a need for more instruction for students using LLMs: some students did not perceive the tools as such but rather as an authoritative knowledge base. Therefore, this work has implications for educators considering the use of LLMs as discussion partners or tools to practice critical thinking, especially in computing ethics education., Comment: accepted at ITiCSE 2024, Milan, Italy

Recent developments in acoustic signal processing have seen the integration of deep learning methodologies, alongside the continued prominence of classical wave expansion-based approaches, particularly in sound field reconstruction. Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) have emerged as a novel framework, bridging the gap between data-driven and model-based techniques for addressing physical phenomena governed by partial differential equations. This paper introduces a PINN-based approach for the recovery of arbitrary volumetric acoustic fields. The network incorporates the wave equation to impose a regularization on signal reconstruction in the time domain. This methodology enables the network to learn the underlying physics of sound propagation and allows for the complete characterization of the sound field based on a limited set of observations. The proposed method's efficacy is validated through experiments involving speech signals in a real-world environment, considering varying numbers of available measurements. Moreover, a comparative analysis is undertaken against state-of-the-art frequency-domain and time-domain reconstruction methods from existing literature, highlighting the increased accuracy across the various measurement configurations.

We introduce a conditional implicit neural atlas (CINA) for spatio-temporal atlas generation from Magnetic Resonance Images (MRI) of the neurotypical and pathological fetal brain, that is fully independent of affine or non-rigid registration. During training, CINA learns a general representation of the fetal brain and encodes subject specific information into latent code. After training, CINA can construct a faithful atlas with tissue probability maps of the fetal brain for any gestational age (GA) and anatomical variation covered within the training domain. Thus, CINA is competent to represent both, neurotypical and pathological brains. Furthermore, a trained CINA model can be fit to brain MRI of unseen subjects via test-time optimization of the latent code. CINA can then produce probabilistic tissue maps tailored to a particular subject. We evaluate our method on a total of 198 T2 weighted MRI of normal and abnormal fetal brains from the dHCP and FeTA datasets. We demonstrate CINA's capability to represent a fetal brain atlas that can be flexibly conditioned on GA and on anatomical variations like ventricular volume or degree of cortical folding, making it a suitable tool for modeling both neurotypical and pathological brains. We quantify the fidelity of our atlas by means of tissue segmentation and age prediction and compare it to an established baseline. CINA demonstrates superior accuracy for neurotypical brains and pathological brains with ventriculomegaly. Moreover, CINA scores a mean absolute error of 0.23 weeks in fetal brain age prediction, further confirming an accurate representation of fetal brain development., Comment: Submitted to MICCAI 2024

Monitoring the coastal area of the Venice Lagoon is of significant importance. While the impact of global warming is felt worldwide, coastal and littoral regions bear the brunt more prominently. These areas not only face the threat of rising sea levels but also contend with the escalating occurrence of seaquakes and floods. Additionally, the intricate ecosystems of rivers, seas, and lakes undergo profound transformations due to climate change and pollutants. Employing devices like the SENSWICH floating wireless sensor presented in this article and similar measurement instruments proves invaluable to automate environmental monitoring, hence eliminating the need for manual sampling campaigns. The utilization of wireless measurement devices offers cost-effectiveness, real-time analysis, and a reduction in human resource requirements. Storing data in cloud services further enhances the ability to monitor parameter changes over extended time intervals. In this article, we present an enhanced sensing device aimed at automating water quality assessment, while considering power consumption and reducing circuit complexity. Specifically, we will introduce the new schematic and circuit of SENSWICH which had changes in circuit and electronic aspects. Furthermore, we outline the methodology for aggregating data in a cloud service environment, such as Amazon Web Service (AWS), and using Grafana for visualization., Comment: 12 pages

Motivated by the modeling of the spatial structure of the velocity field of three-dimensional turbulent flows, and the phenomenology of cascade phenomena, a linear dynamics has been recently proposed able to generate high velocity gradients from a smooth-in-space forcing term. It is based on a linear Partial Differential Equation (PDE) stirred by an additive random forcing term which is delta-correlated in time. The underlying proposed deterministic mechanism corresponds to a transport in Fourier space which aims at transferring energy injected at large scales towards small scales. The key role of the random forcing is to realize these transfers in a statistically homogeneous way. Whereas at finite times and positive viscosity the solutions are smooth, a loss of regularity is observed for the statistically stationary state in the inviscid limit. We here present novel simulations, based on finite volume methods in the Fourier domain and a splitting method in time, which are more accurate than the pseudo-spectral simulations. We show that the novel algorithm is able to reproduce accurately the expected local and statistical structure of the predicted solutions. We conduct numerical simulations in one, two and three spatial dimensions, and we display the solutions both in physical and Fourier spaces. The Extreme Universe Space Observatory on a Super Pressure Balloon 1 (EUSO-SPB1) was launched in 2017 April from Wanaka, New Zealand. The plan of this mission of opportunity on a NASA super pressure balloon test flight was to circle the southern hemisphere. The primary scientific goal was to make the first observations of ultra-high-energy cosmic-ray extensive air showers (EASs) by looking down on the atmosphere with an ultraviolet (UV) fluorescence telescope from suborbital altitude (33~km). After 12~days and 4~hours aloft, the flight was terminated prematurely in the Pacific Ocean. Before the flight, the instrument was tested extensively in the West Desert of Utah, USA, with UV point sources and lasers. The test results indicated that the instrument had sensitivity to EASs of approximately 3 EeV. Simulations of the telescope system, telescope on time, and realized flight trajectory predicted an observation of about 1 event assuming clear sky conditions. The effects of high clouds were estimated to reduce this value by approximately a factor of 2. A manual search and a machine-learning-based search did not find any EAS signals in these data.
