La Rivista abbandona la cadenza semestrale, ma esce e uscirà nel corso di ciascun anno solare ogni volta che sia pronto per la pubblicazione un gruppo di contributi che riterremo opportuno rendere subito disponibile per la comunità scientifica.

This study aims to provide an epigraphic and contextual analysis of the graffiti on the pier of the acropolis of Monte Sannace. The data, of exceptional significance, are valuable especially considering the extensive research conducted on abecedaria and ancient languages of the Mediterranean. The document includes four abecedaria and other six graffiti which are analyzed in relation to their regional epigraphic landscape and through a comparison coherent with their micro-epigraphic context.

The paper discusses eight partly unpublished clay objects kept at MArTa and provides the first edition of the Greek inscriptions on three of them. These objects belong to a group of morphologically heterogeneous tools used for working with clay, which are given different names both in the Museum’s records and in literature (kneaders, pestles, sanders, etc.). However, there is no exact correspondence between shapes and names, which shows that the functions of these tools are not fully understood. The paper is therefore an attempt at a more thoughtful insight into this topic and discusses the role of inscriptions.

This paper examines some unpublished braziers, currently stored at the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto. Three of them are inscribed with the same anthroponym in the genitive case (Ἑκαταίου), while the remaining eight are anepigraphic. Braziers, which were used both in daily life and as domestic furnishings, were widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean during the Hellenistic period. These new findings further confirm the involvement of Taranto, along with some other Italian cities, in the trade and circulation of these objects throughout the Mediterranean area. This paper aims to provide an overview of this phenomenon, with a particular focus on the identity of Hekataios and the characteristics of his production.

L’epigramma funerario di Pollis è iscritto su una stele che, su basi epigrafiche, è riconducibile a Megara e databile alla prima metà del V secolo a.C. (480-470). Il soggetto dell’iscrizione è identificato con l’oplita in armi raffigurato sulla stele. Nei due esametri dell’epigramma è specificato che Pollis morì per mano di στίκται (tatuatori). Sulla base della cronologia e della probabile provenienza dell’iscrizione, è possibile postulare che il greco Pollis morì nel contesto della seconda guerra persiana. Se si presta fede alla nota testimonianza di Erodoto relativa agli στίγματα βασιλήια, gli στίκται dell’iscrizione possono essere identificati con i Persiani. Tuttavia, altre identificazioni sono plausibili.

L’iscrizione conserva un decreto demotico forse da attribuire al demo attico di Myrrhinous. I doveri e i compiti del demarco sembrano essere al centro della delibera, che tocca tre temi principali: l’euthyna del demarco uscente che aveva luogo a inizio anno, la procedura di prestito di denaro sacro e infine i sacrifici compiuti in occasione di alcune festività e dei quali il demarco era responsabile. L’epigrafe permette dunque di riflettere sul funzionamento interno dell'amministrazione demotica, mettendo al tempo stesso in evidenza i vari ambiti di competenza del demarco, che toccavano la sfera politica, amministrativa e religiosa.

Nella prima metà del IV secolo a.C. (369 o 363/362 a.C.), nel santuario panellenico di Delfi, i Tessali dedicano un’iscrizione e una statua bronzea in onore del comandante tebano Pelopida, probabilmente per celebrarne le gesta contro Sparta, in difesa della Tessaglia. L’offerta reca inoltre la firma dell’artista Lisippo.

Il testo, inciso su una stele rinvenuta nei pressi dell’altare dell’Amphiareion di Oropos, raccoglie una serie di norme che disciplinavano la vita del santuario occupandosi di regolamentare la presenza del sacerdote durante l’anno, di chiarirne l’autorità sul neokoros, di definirne le competenze giuridiche e sanzionatorie circa il comportamento improprio dei postulanti, oltre a fissare le modalità del versamento dell’eparche, imposta al fedele per accedere all’enkoimeterion.

I.Milet VI, 3 nr. 1039 è un decreto onorario milesio per Eirenias figlio di Eirenias il Vecchio, un notabile della città di Mileto, attivo nella prima metà del II sec. a.C. Eirenias è noto per la sua attività diplomatica di raccordo tra Seleucidi e Attalidi. In particolare, il decreto in esame testimonia il suo ruolo di intermediario nel contesto delle donazioni di Eumene II a Mileto per la costruzione di un Ginnasio, e nella concessione di ateleia alla città da parte di Antioco IV e di sua moglie Laodice. Il contributo presenta anche un’analisi del ricco dossier di iscrizioni relative ad Eirenias, che illustra le principali tappe della sua carriera politica, dall’elezione a synedros nel trattato tra Mileto e Eraclea al Latmo, all’incarico di presbeutes nell’ambasceria a Eumene II, alla curatela degli onori per il medesimo sovrano.

This bronze plaque, found in 1879, contains two monetary deposits made by an individual named Zeuxias at the sanctuary of Olympia in the second half of the fifth century BC. It constitutes one of the few preserved documents of this type, making it a valuable testimony of banking activities at Panhellenic sanctuaries. Due to the fragmentary status of the text, a comparison with other analogous inscriptions and literary testimonies is here offered, with the aim of casting some light on the reason behind the deposit, and the formulaic language used.

This study delves into the only three Hellenistic civic inscriptions of Kephaloidion (modern Cefalù), a secondary harbour in northern Sicily. The inscriptions, despite their fragmentary nature, reveal unique linguistic and historical features that align with regional trends, including the role of civic officials. Two of these inscriptions are rather early examples of civic epigraphy in Kephaloidion, and appear to be dedications of local officials with some unique features. The third one, a statue base honouring a Roman individual of the gens Domitia, may be one of the oldest examples of honorific epigraphy for a provincial governor in Sicily, if identified with L. Domitius Ahenobarbus (pr. 97 BC).

L’iscrizione è inserita tra i conti dei naopoioi di Delfi, che documentano le offerte destinate alla ricostruzione del tempio di Apollo dopo la catastrofe naturale che colpì il sito intorno al 373 a.C. La lastra di marmo è parte di una grondaia pertinente al tempio d’età arcaica. L’epigrafe attesta una lista di eparchai inviate al santuario da Sparta e da alcuni cittadini negli anni 337/336 e 336/335 a.C. Il carattere straordinario dell’offerta spartana è dovuto alla menzione di re Cleomene II, che recò in dono personalmente 510 dracme per il tempio in un momento cruciale per Sparta, subito dopo l’assassinio del rivale Filippo II di Macedonia.

The paper discusses the first edition of a list of personal names inscribed on a terracotta tile. The document, which dates back to the early Hellenistic period, was brought to light in 1988 from a craft area site in Taranto (via Leonida 52). The type of inscription seems to refer to the genre of defixiones written in the form of a nominal list, while the type of medium appears to be rather unusual for a magical text. Comparison with a coeval defixio from Taranto and similar documents shows that magic lists are known to have been used in Taranto during the Hellenistic period, as well as in other areas of Magna Graecia and Sicily.

The article discusses Andreas Empeirikos' poem titled "The White Whale" and examines it as a poetic response to Herman Melville's novel Moby Dick. In this poem, Empeirikos portrays an "epiphany of the past recaptured", which is experienced by Ishmael, the narrator of both Melville's and Empeirikos' works. Through his deep connection with the ocean and the world around him, Ishmael, Empeirikos' poetic persona, recaptures the emotional richness inspired by the sight of a re-enchanted world and seeks to glorify the white whale. This pursuit involves a rejection of materialism and an embrace of a visionary and idealised surreal world embodied by the white whale - a symbol of a New Jerusalem.

This paper attempts to provide a descriptive analysis of the newly coined [Ν. + Ν.] compound lexemes in Constantine Manasses's Synopsis Chronike (12th cent.) with a view to tracing the innovations and similarities to the Ancient Greek compound system. First, it provides a brief outline of the main types of Greek compounds according to the underlying syntactic relations between the immediate constituents, referring to the related notion of 'syntagma' (Section 1). Then, it deals with the phonological and morphosyntactic criteria that distinguish compounds from syntactic groups (Section 2). The subsequent section addresses the stress patterns of compounds (Section 3). The final section gives a description of the compounds based on i. the morphemic status of the immediate constituents, namely whether they are free or bound elements, ii. the linear order of the determinatum (dm) and determinant (dt) inside the combination, and iii. the lexical class of the compound as a whole, and equally the class of the compound components (Section 4).

Based on a bibliography of translations from Czech into Modern Greek created by the author of the article, the text offers insights into the appearance of Czech literature on the Greek book market since the beginning of the 20th century. It first briefly compares the book markets in both countries and subsequently analyses the content of the bibliography from the following angles: The existent translations are projected onto a timeline with a historical explanation of the resulting pattern. An overall commentary is given on the publishers involved in producing these translations, the source languages with which the translators worked and the subsequent editions and new translations that have appeared in Greece. The final chapter presents the most significant translations and the possible motivation for their creation, the most translated authors and the most active or otherwise important translators.

The apparent or latent French notes-citations in the manuscripts of Solomos's The Free Besieged reveal both the multilingual nature of Solomos as a reader-copyist and the translingual character of his writing process. Relevant to the latter is the fact that Solomos often proceeds in translating the French passages he reproduces into Italian, without necessarily the context revealing the existence of the French original. More specifically, in recording the notes-citations, Solomos exhausts both the monolingual option of copying (French) and the interlingual possibilities of translating word for word into Italian or of faithfully rendering it in a mixed language (French-Italian). The target of this paper is to compare the Italian translations to the French original texts, aiming on the one hand to identify any discrepancies in Solomos's translation options, and on the other, to examine Solomos's interlingual, if not translingual, process of translating as well as the phenomena of code switching and cross-linguistic influence resulting from it.

The current face of the Greek community in Hungary was undoubtedly shaped by the political refugees who arrived in Hungary due to the Greek Civil War and their descendants. However, this Greek community recognises the legacy of the Greek merchant diaspora of the 18th and 19th centuries, which played a decisive role in the modernisation of Hungary as its own heritage. Therefore, I will briefly describe what this heritage consists of and how contemporary Greeks relate to it. I will then review the history of the resettlement of Greek political refugees in Hungary, with a particular focus on Greek children who arrived in Hungary without parental care. I will present their forced departure from Greece, their arrival in Hungary, their settlement, and their integration, partly based on archival materials and mainly on life history interviews.

Il decreto ateniese qui discusso presenta alcuni aspetti problematici, tra cui la datazione, che oscilla tra il 440 e il 424 a.C. e lo stesso contenuto del documento. Il decreto, molto lacunoso, garantisce il pasto a spese pubbliche (sitesis) per alcuni beneficiari, tra cui si annoverano i discendenti dei tirannicidi, Armodio e Aristogitone; forse i pythochrestoi o, meglio, gli indovini scelti da Apollo; i vincitori di almeno uno dei quattro agoni della periodos e probabilmente gli strateghi. Infine si discute l'eventualità della concessione della proedria insieme alla sitesis.

Sul pendio di Monte di Vico a Ischia si trovava un’iscrizione che ricordava l’erezione di una fortificazione ad opera di due personaggi con nomi oschi e di alcuni soldati. Nel riportare le diverse ipotesi avanzate sul suo contesto storico, si condivide la più recente e altrettanto trascurata: i due personaggi erano arconti di Neapolis che approntarono le difese di Aenaria in occasione della Prima o Seconda guerra punica. Riprendendo questa tesi, si forniscono nuove riflessioni sull’arcontato a Neapolis e un completo commento storico del documento, del quale si vuole evidenziare l’importanza per la storia della costituzione della città.

Il re Antioco IV, insediatosi sul trono paterno grazie al determinante supporto di Eumene II re di Pergamo e dei suoi fratelli, viene onorato in un decreto di Atene. Presentandosi come la versione ufficiale dell’ascesa al trono di Siria da parte di Antioco IV, succeduto al defunto fratello Seleuco IV nel 175, l’iscrizione offre l’opportunità di fare maggiore chiarezza su un complesso momento di transizione dell’oriente ellenistico e in particolare della dinastia seleucide, sul versante tanto politico-militare quanto dinastico-matrimoniale.

Au lendemain de la défaite de la Ligue achéenne et de la destruction de Corinthe en 146 av. J.-C., le général romain Lucius Mummius Achaïcus effectua un tour de Grèce afin de réorganiser le territoire grec désormais sous la domination romaine. En plus de régler des différents politiques entre cités, on constate que Mummius laissa sur son passage plusieurs offrandes et monuments dans d’importants villes, temples et sanctuaires. En prenant comme point de départ cette inscription, une dédicace de Lucius Mummius d’une statue équestre à Zeus Olympien, nous analyserons les différentes médiums et stratégies de communication employés par Lucius Mummius pour marquer sa victoire et ses exploits dans la mémoire collective des Grecs.

In 130 BC, the Cretan archisomatophylax Soterichos made a complex dedication to Pan of Fair Paths (Euodos) on behalf of Ptolemy VIII, Cleopatra III, and their children. From a historical point of view, this Upper Egyptian inscription testifies the dynastic conflict between Ptolemy VIII and Cleopatra II, but also the movement of men and goods in the Egyptian Eastern Desert at a crucial moment in Ptolemaic history. Furthemore, it can also be interpreted as a revealing autobiographical statement and a certificate of loyalty in which the contours of the god (an interpretatio Graeca of Min) and the king seem to merge together.

L’iscrizione, rinvenuta a Smirne, è datata tra la fine del II e il I secolo a.C. Presenta una serie di prescrizioni atte a tutelare i beni del santuario di un’anonima dea, in particolare i suoi pesci sacri e il loro allevamento (ichthyotrophion). Sulla base di questi elementi, è possibile ipotizzare che si tratti della siriana Atargatis, del cui culto siamo informati da autori quali Luciano di Samosata ed Eliano, che ricordano il legame della dea con i pesci e menzionano l’esistenza di vivai nei suoi santuari. In età ellenistica, il culto degli dèi siriani si diffonde capillarmente nel mondo greco, importato da comunità di negotiatores siro-fenici che si stabiliscono nelle principali città portuali dell’Egeo, dove fondano, come a Delo, santuari e associazioni di culto.

The paper provides a new reading of a mould-made inscription on the back of two clay statuettes found at the end of the 19th century in the Taranto necropolis of Contrada Santa Lucia and dated between the second half of the 1st c. BC and the beginning of the 1st c. AD. The technique of making the inscription, which was imprinted inside the mould after being scratched on the patrix, is not widespread in the Taranto area. The inscription, a Roman anthroponym written in Greek language (a signature), represents an element of complex interpretation, because it remains uncertain whether it is to be attributed to a coroplast or to a workshop owner.

Research activities conducted within the Aragonese Castle of Taranto over the last fifteen years have yielded numerous data that have proved useful for the integration of the cognitive framework of the eastern sector of the acropolis of the Greek polis. In particular, the discovery of two new vascular graffiti, as part of an unloading of ceramic and architectural evidence probably belonging to the sacred sphere, seems to offer new insights into the reconstruction of the topography and the cultic attribution of the sacred area of the Doric Temple in Piazza Castello.

The contribution offers the first edition of a small lead olla preserved in the storerooms of the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto, made from a bivalve matrix and intended for the trade of medicinal ointments or eye drops. The discreetly preserved object bears a matrix inscription consisting of an idionym in genitive case: Παμφίλου, from Pamphilos, identifying the φαρμακοπώλης according to whose recipe the medicamentum was made. The name is massively attested in Attica and the object therefore seems referable, in terms of form and material of manufacture, to the ‘Athenian or Central-Mediterranean’ area.

Axon è come una tessitura: le iscrizioni disegnano il profilo di un tema o di un contesto, e man mano che il corpus va crescendo contribuiscono ad arricchire un panorama già tratteggiato in qualche suo aspetto. Con la sua iscrizione d’apertura, così, questo numero si collega idealmente a quello che l’ha preceduto, in cui un posto speciale era riservato all’epigrafia ateniese di età classica. Qui si tratta di un decreto dai numerosi aspetti problematici, a cominciare dalla datazione: nonostante l’assetto lacunoso del testo vediamo emergere figure note (i discendenti dei tirannicidi o, forse, gli strateghi) e meno note (specifiche categorie di indovini) del panorama sociale della città, comunque destinatari di privilegi pubblici che ribadiscono la centralità di spazi e pratiche condivise sullo sfondo della democrazia periclea.

By the end of the Greek Civil War (1946–1949), about 50,000 Greeks had fled to Eastern Europe. The complex conditions of this massive exodus have been thoroughly discussed by historians and social scientists. However, much less is known about the conditions under which a large number of political refugees eventually returned to Greece. The few available studies on the repatriation of such refugees have shown that returning home was a more complicated and demanding process than adjusting to a "host" country. Repatriation was the primary desire of the majority of Greek refugees. However, as the years in Czechoslovakia passed, the hopes of free repatriation diminished. What the refugees were most fearful of was dying in a foreign country, away from their homeland and relatives, something they considered to be a "double death". Thus, some refugees expressed a "last wish" that at least their bones would be taken back home. The work I present here concerns the difficulties that this kind of repatriation faced. I attend to the meanings as well as the hopes and fears attached to the notion of "home" as a place of origin to which one yearns to return.

The ‘Three Kings’ Inscription’ bears the fragment of a Rhodian arbitration between Bargylia and another town in Caria. It is an important document, for it described major political events which affected western Caria on the eve of the Second Macedonian War (200‑197 BC). Above all, it makes it evident that Rhodes eventually came to know about the same Syro-Macedonian connivance against Egypt and the child king Ptolemy V which Polybius (3.2.8; 15.20) later described in big words. After a detailed status quaestionis, the importance of comparing the Rhodian, Ptolemaic, and Polybian perspectives on Antiochus III and Philip V’s conduct is stressed here.

L’iscrizione metrica, scoperta a Tirreo in Acarnania e trascritta da un abitante del luogo, è risultata immediatamente irreperibile. Il testo narra le gesta eroiche del soldato Timocrito, caduto in uno scontro con gli Etoli; nel distico elegiaco finale vi è un esplicito riferimento al poeta Tirteo. Sin da Klaffenbach, editore principe, l’epigramma è stato concordemente datato alla fine del III secolo a.C. sulla base dello stile e del contenuto: si è ipotizzato che l’evento bellico sia da collegare a uno degli assalti che gli Etoli compirono contro l’Acarnania durante la guerra sociale del 220‑217 a.C. Un riesame del testo e un confronto con le altre epigrafi metriche rinvenute in loco e con le fonti storiche permette di avanzare una proposta di datazione alternativa. Secondo quanto racconta Tito Livio, la polis di Tirreo fu assaltata nuovamente nel 192‑191 a.C. dalle truppe etolo-siriache di Antioco III. In assenza di un esame autoptico o di immagini del reperto, sembra dunque plausibile ascrivere l’iscrizione tanto alla fine del III secolo a.C., legata agli eventi della guerra sociale del 220‑217 a.C., quanto all’inizio del II secolo a.C., connessa all’attacco etolo-siriaco del 192‑191 a.C.

Come le altre, anche la ϝράτρα per gli Elei è un oracolo di Zeus Olimpio; in questo caso, il dio ordina di trattare lo straniero – e segretario – Patrias come fosse un eleo, quando sia vittima di una maledizione. Il protagonismo dell’ellanodica nella procedura di giustizia che viene stabilita e il ricorso alla punizione della frusta ambientano inoltre quella procedura (che dimostra anche una certa competenza ‘panellenica’ degli Elei) e il reato che deve punire nel santuario di Olimpia. Appare infine richiesta anche da un più rigoroso rispetto dello spazio a disposizione la nuova proposta di integrazione della lacuna all’inizio della linea 9.

La stele con bassorilievo, rinvenuta a Cihanköy, a nord-ovest del lago di İznik, e conservata presso il Museo Archeologico di Istanbul dal 1901, riporta un’iscrizione doppia composta da due epitafi in distici elegiaci dedicati all’ufficiale (hegemon) Menas di Bitinia, caduto in una battaglia svoltasi verosimilmente nella piana di Curupedio, nei pressi del fiume Frigio in Lidia. Sull’identificazione della battaglia, si è ipotizzato la battaglia di Curupedio tra Lisimaco e Seleuco I (281 a.C.), la battaglia di Magnesia tra Roma e Antioco III (190/189 a.C.), i conflitti tra il regno di Bitinia e quello di Pergamo (208‑183 a.C.; 156‑154 a.C.).

Il documento presenta l’epigramma dedicato dalla città di Atene ai caduti in guerra nella battaglia di Potidea. Ritrovata nel 1802 in prossimità del Ceramico, lungo il Demosion Sema, l’epigrafe doveva essere parte integrante di un monumento commemorativo (un polyandr(i)on). Il testo, sebbene frammentario, è databile con un buon margine di sicurezza al 432-431 a.C., dato confermato da un passo tucidideo che riporta della morte in battaglia di 150 Ateniesi e del generale Callia. L’iscrizione rappresenta un importante esemplare per la riflessione sulle pratiche rituali per i caduti in guerra e sul sentire greco riguardo a motivi escatologici.
