Abstract

Two density-dependent branching processes are considered to model predator-prey populations. For both models, preys are considered to be the main food supply of predators. Moreover, in each generation the number of individuals of each species is distributed according to a binomial distribution with size given by the species population size and probability of success depending on the density of preys per predator at the current generation. The difference between the two proposed processes lies in the food supply of preys. In the first one, we consider that preys have all the food they need at their disposal while in the second one, we assume that the natural resources of the environment are limited and therefore there exists a competition among preys for food supplies. Results on the fixation and extinction of both species as well as conditions for the coexistence are provided for the first model. On the event of coexistence of both populations and on the prey fixation event, the limiting growth rates are obtained. For the second model, we prove that the extinction of the entire system occurs almost surely. Finally, the evolution of both models over the generations is illustrated by simulated examples. 22. From Bildungsroman to Bildungsromance: Physical and Affective War in Chinelo Okparanta’s Under the Udala Trees

Abstract

The bildungsroman has dominated the Nigerian literary landscape since the 1990s with novels such as Chimamanda N. Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus (2004), Unoma Azuah’s Sky-High Flames (2005), Chika Unigwe’s Night Dancer (2012), and Chinelo Okparanta’s Under the Udala Trees (2015). These coming-of-age stories place a special emphasis on the national evolution of Nigeria. Thus, by delving into such interrelation of the national and personal domains, I propose to theorize Under the Udala Trees as a “bildungsromance,” or novel of affective and romantic development. I use the term “bildungsromance” to describe the growth of Okparanta’s protagonist, Ijeoma, as intrinsically associated with the experiences gathered from her affective attachments both in the public and the private spheres. I will analyze Ijeoma’s sentimental relationships as she discovers and naturalizes her queer identity. For this, I will delve into the negative affects − in the form of fear, shame and guilt (Braidotti 2009, 50) − that influence Ijeoma’s experience as a result of her non-conforming to the dictums of Nigerian customary laws. Ironically, such negative affects will be introduced as tightly associated with “the promise of happiness” (Ahmed 2010, 14). In turn, I shall underline the role of Ijeoma’s intimate and romantic relationships in prompting positive forms of affect such as self-love and pride. These affective experiences allow Ijeoma to acquire a critical perspective towards Nigerian customary laws and their impact on identity formation and on what has been referred to as the “democratisation of the private sphere” (Giddens 1992, 184). Ultimately, I will hinge upon Ijeoma’s awareness of her own affective advancements as a key element in her bildungsromance.

Abstract

The objective of this work was to study the socioeconomic, educational, work performance and leadership style impact in a paired sample of students from the 2021 edition and two years later in 2023 to the same participants of Leadership for Transformation in order to evaluate the impact on training after the process. An adaptation of the MLQ-5X instrument from (Bass and Avolio, 1995) was used. The results suggest that the main predominant leadership style is transformational, specifically the dimensions of motivation by inspiration, idealized influence by behaviors and individual considerations. Men are more likely than women to employ the transactional leadership style, specifically passive management by exception. In response to the hypothesis posed in this work, we can mention that, if there was a significant change between the leadership styles of the participants after 2 years of having finished the training program in Leadership for Transformation, virtual edition 2021, and that the main style of leadership that is adopted is the transformational one, giving better results in work performance, as well as in the results and that these social leaders achieve that the collaborators commit to the achievement of the mission of the organization, leaving aside each of their personal interests and focuses on collectives.

Abstract

The prevalence of multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections, particularly carbapenem-resistant strains, has become a significant global health concern. Ceftazidime–avibactam (CZA) has emerged as a promising treatment option. However, data on its efficacy and safety in children are scarce, necessitating further investigation. We conducted a descriptive case series at a tertiary hospital in Spain from February 2019 to January 2022. Pediatric patients (<16 years) treated with CZA for confirmed or suspected multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections were included. The clinical and microbiological characteristics, treatment approaches, and outcomes were examined. Eighteen children received CZA treatment. All had complex chronic conditions, with the most frequent underlying main diseases being liver transplantation (n = 8) and biliary atresia (n = 4). The predominant type of infection for which they received CZA was intra-abdominal infection caused or suspected to be caused by OXA-48-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. CZA was generally well tolerated. Within the first month of starting CZA therapy, two patients died, with one case directly linked to the infection's fatal outcome. Some patients needed repeated courses of therapy due to recurrent infections, yet no resistance development was noted. In summary, the use of CZA showed effectiveness and safety, while the lack of resistance development highlights CZA's potential as a primary treatment option against OXA-48-producing infections. Abstract

Severe droughts limit tree growth and forest productivity worldwide, a phenomenon which is expected to aggravate over the next decades. However, how drought intensity and climatic conditions before and after drought events modulate tree growth resilience remains unclear, especially when considering the range-wide phenotypic variability of a tree species. We gathered 4632 Aleppo pine (Pinus halepensis Mill.) tree-ring width series from 281 sites located in 11 countries across the Mediterranean basin, representing the entire geographic and bioclimatic range of the species. For each site and year of the period 1950–2020, we quantified tree-growth resilience and its two components, resistance and recovery, to account for the impact of drought and the capacity to recover from it. Relative drought intensity of each year was assessed using SPEI (Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index), a climatic water deficit index. Generalized additive mixed models were used to explore the non-linear relationships between resilience and its two components and drought intensity, preceding and following years climatic conditions. We found that P. halepensis radial growth was highly dependent on the SPEI from September of the previous year to June of the current year. Trees growing under more arid bioclimates showed higher inter-annual growth variability and were more sensitive to drought, resulting in an increased response magnitude to pre-, during and post-drought conditions. In contrast to our expectations, drought intensity only slightly affected resilience, which was rather negatively affected by favorable preceding conditions and improved by favorable following conditions. 41. The Benevolent Dictator: Love and Masculine Performativity in Stay with Me

Abstract

This article analyzes the male protagonist of Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀’s Stay with Me (2017) as an embodiment of the internal contradictions that customary laws and the masculine performativity exert upon Nigerian men. The novel retells Yejide and Akin’s relationship and their struggles to conceive as Akin hides his erectile dysfunction from Yejide and his family. I analyze Akin under Elnathan John’s satiric label of “the benevolent dictator” (2020) exploring how this term engages with the idea of masculinity and male performativity in contemporary Nigeria. For this, I take as a point of departure Patrick K. Uchendu’s study on Nigerian masculinity (2008) and Daniel J. Smith’s notion of “performativity” in Nigerian men (2016). The role of the family in the imposition of customary practices is underlined as essential in Akin progressively becoming a “benevolent dictator”. Akin’s trust in the potential of love and intimacy is measured against the weight of the pressures exerted by the Nigerian family as an institution. In turn, I delve into the role of fear and shame as “prevent[ing] the subject from betraying ‘ideals’” (Ahmed 2014, 106). Ultimately, I claim that the actions of the benevolent dictator in the private sphere echo Adébáyọ̀’s narration of Ibrahim Babangida’s military dictatorship (1985-1993).

Abstract

Background: Data on the benefits of rapid microbiological testing on antimicrobial consumption (AC) and antimicrobial resistance patterns (ARPs) are scarce. We evaluated the impact of a protocol based on rapid techniques on AC and ARP in intensive care (ICU) patients. Methods: A retrospective pre- (2018) and post-intervention (2019–2021) study was conducted in ICU patients. A rapid diagnostic algorithm was applied starting in 2019 in patients with a lower respiratory tract infection. The incidence of nosocomial infections, ARPs, and AC as DDDs (defined daily doses) were monitored. Results: A total of 3635 patients were included: 987 in the pre-intervention group and 2648 in the post-intervention group. The median age was 60 years, the sample was 64% male, and the average APACHE II and SOFA scores were 19 points and 3 points. The overall ICU mortality was 17.2% without any differences between the groups. An increase in the number of infections was observed in the post-intervention group (44.5% vs. 17.9%, p < 0.01), especially due to an increase in the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (44.6% vs. 25%, p < 0.001). AC decreased from 128.7 DDD in 2018 to 66.0 DDD in 2021 (rate ratio = 0.51). An increase in Pseudomonas aeruginosa susceptibility of 23% for Piperacillin/tazobactam and 31% for Meropenem was observed. Conclusion: The implementation of an algorithm based on rapid microbiological diagnostic techniques allowed for a significant reduction in AC and ARPs without affecting the prognosis of critically ill patients. Abstract

This essay analyzes representations of (anti)romantic relationships and episodes of "forced intimacy" in Chinelo Okparanta's Under the Udala Trees (2015) and Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀'s Stay with Me (2017). I will establish a parallelism between the intimate and romantic relationships described in the novels and the social and political evolution of the Nigerian nation, placing the focus onto the female protagonists and their obligation to conform to preestablished feminine and heterosexual models in agreement with Nigerian traditional practices. Through the analysis of the affective and sociocultural evolution of these women, I aim to prove that there is a direct association between demystified representations of the nation and a disillusionment with the romantic ideals of the couples featured in the novels. I will refer to their evolution as "postromantic" since it transcends the performativity linked to romanticization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
