ABSTRACTThis study was conducted to optimize a process of low-temperature plasma treatment for the decontamination of Aspergillus flavus (A. flavus) on corn kernels. Impacts of plasma-treated time (30, 60, 90 s), plasma-treated power (300, 400, 500 W), and vacuum degree (85, 90, 95 Pa) on the decontamination effect in this process were explored. The optimal conditions included vacuum degree at 90 Pa, plasma treating time of 90 s, and plasma treating power of 500 W, under which the A. flavus spores was 4.03 log (cfu/g). Plasma treatment triggered antioxidative defense system, broke cell structures, and dispersed cell contents. A large number of free radicals act on lipids and proteins, and malondialdehyde (MDA) accumulate in large quantities, further leading to damage to cell structures.

Determining the triboelectric charge and energy density of dielectric materials is generally limited by many factors, failing to reflect their intrinsic behaviour. Here, a standardized strategy is proposed employing contact-separation TENG and supressing air-breakdown to assess max triboelectric charge and energy densities leading to an updated triboelectric series.

Table tennis competition is voted as one of the most popular competitive sports. The referee umpires the competition mainly based on visual observation and experience, which may make misjudgments on competition results due to the referee's subjective uncertainty or imprecision. In this work, a novel intelligent umpiring system based on arrayed self-powered acceleration sensor nodes was presented to enhance the competition accuracy. A sensor node array model was established to detect ball collision point on the table tennis table. This model clearly illuminated the working mechanism of the proposed umpiring system. And an improved particle swarm optimization (level-based competitive swarm optimization) was applied to optimize the arrayed sensor nodes distribution by redefining the representations and update rules of position and velocity. The optimized results showed that the number of sensors decreased from 58 to 51. Also, the reliability of the optimized nodes distribution of the table tennis umpiring system has been verified theoretically. The results revealed that our system achieved a precise detection of the ball collision point with uniform error distances below 3.5 mm. Besides, this research offered an in-depth study on intelligent umpiring system based on arrayed self-powered sensor nodes, which will improve the accuracy of the umpiring of table tennis competition.

Surface charge density has been demonstrated to be significantly impacted by the dielectric properties of tribomaterials. However, the ambiguous physical mechanism of dielectric manipulated charge behavior still restricts the construction of high-performance tribomaterials. Here, using the atomic force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy, an in situ method was conducted to investigate the contact electrification and charge dynamics on a typical tribomaterial (i.e., BaTiO3/PVDF-TrFE nanocomposite) at nanoscale. Combined with the characterization of triboelectric device at macroscale, it is found that the number of transferred electrons increases with contact force/area and tends to reach saturation under increased friction cycles. The incorporated high permittivity BaTiO3 nanoparticles enhance the capacitance and electron trapping capability of the nanocomposites, efficiently inhibiting the lateral diffusion of electrons and improving the output performance of the triboelectric devices. Exponential decay of the surface potential is observed over monitoring time for all dielectric samples. At high BaTiO3 loadings, more electrons can drift into the bulk and combine with the induced charges on the back electrode, forming a large leakage current and accordingly accelerating the electron dissipation. Hence, the charge trapping/storing and dissipating, as well as the charge attracting properties, should be comprehensively considered in the design of high-performance tribomaterials.

Understanding the spatial distributions of soil water, temperature and nutrients as well as their effects on maize growth and grain yield is vital for optimizing drip fertigation regimes. In this study, a 2 year field experiment was conducted on drip-fertigated spring maize with plastic mulching in arid northwestern China in 2015 and 2016. Four irrigation levels were set: as I60 (60% ETc; ETc is crop evapotranspiration), I75 (75% ETc), I90 (90% ETc) and I105 (105% ETc) in 2015; and as I60 (60% ETc), I80 (80% ETc), I100 (100% ETc) and I120 (120% ETc) in 2016. Two fertilization rates of N-P2O5-K2O were set: as F180 (180-90-90) and F240 (240-120-120). The results showed that the average soil water content in the deeper soil layer (80–120 cm) increased with the increase in irrigation level, and the lowest average soil water content in the 0–80 cm soil layer occurred under I95 in 2015 and under I100 in 2016. The irrigation level more significantly influenced the soil temperature at 5 cm than at the other depths. With the decrease in the irrigation level and progression of the growth period, the soil temperature increased. The soil nitrate nitrogen content in the root zone decreased with increasing irrigation level. The largest soil nitrate nitrogen content at the 0–100 cm depth occurred under I60 in both 2015 and 2016. Significant differences were observed for root length density in the 0–20 cm soil layer at various lateral locations. In deeper (60–100 cm) soil layers, the root length density under I75 (2015) and I80 (2016) was greater than at other depths. Grain yield, water use efficiency (WUE) and partial factor productivity (PFP) increased with the increase in irrigation level in 2015, while it increased and then decreased in 2016. I105F180 achieved the maximum grain yield (18.81 t ha−1), WUE (3.32 kg m−3), and PFP (52.26 kg kg−1) in 2015, while I100F180 achieved the maximum grain yield (20.51 t ha−1), WUE (3.99 kg m−3), and PFP (57.02 kg kg−1) in 2016. The optimal drip fertigation regimes for spring maize in arid northwest China were recommended as 90–100% ETc and 180-90-90 (N-P2O5-K2O) kg hm−2.

The piezo-phototronic effect (a coupling effect of piezoelectric, photoexcitation and semiconducting properties, coined in 2010) has been demonstrated to be an ingenious and robust strategy to manipulate optoelectronic processes by tuning the energy band structure and photoinduced carrier behavior. The piezo-phototronic effect exhibits great potential in improving the quantum yield efficiencies of optoelectronic materials and devices and thus could help increase the energy conversion efficiency, thus alleviating the energy shortage crisis. In this review, the fundamental principles and challenges of representative optoelectronic materials and devices are presented, including photocatalysts (converting solar energy into chemical energy), solar cells (generating electricity directly under light illumination), photodetectors (converting light into electrical signals) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs, converting electric current into emitted light signals). Importantly, the mechanisms of how the piezo-phototronic effect controls the optoelectronic processes and the recent progress and applications in the above-mentioned materials and devices are highlighted and summarized. Only photocatalysts, solar cells, photodetectors, and LEDs that display piezo-phototronic behavior are reviewed. Material and structural design, property characterization, theoretical simulation calculations, and mechanism analysis are then examined as strategies to further enhance the quantum yield efficiency of optoelectronic devices via the piezo-phototronic effect. This comprehensive overview will guide future fundamental and applied studies that capitalize on the piezo-phototronic effect for energy conversion and storage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
