24. Improved Utilization for “Smart Parking Systems” Based on Paging Technique

Abstract

Considering the rapid urbanization and the road congestion, the development of smart parking solutions becomes more crucial, especially in terms of economic interests. Thanks to IoT-connectivity and the cloud-integrated platforms, drivers can easily find a vacant parking lot with smart parking services. This paper intervenes in the profit of parking management systems. The paper proposes a new technique “paging technique” which increases the utilization factor of parking slots. The proposed method takes advantage of the idle time that exists between two successful parking services in the same slot. Besides, it investigates the possibility of using the idle times from different parking slots to provide a continuous parking time for an additional car. The paging technique is optimally implemented using mixed-integer linear programming that maximizes the utilization factor for the parking slots with minimum car transitions. Moreover, a data model for the parking management system has been constructed while considering the three major customers, namely, regular, prepaid, and walk-in customers. The difference between fixed and dynamic pricing for parking has been investigated. The technique has been validated using GAMS optimization software and hardware using DSP with Coin-or branch and cut solver (CBC) under real-life conditions. The statistical results prove that the revenue for the proposed parking system has increased significantly. Finally, a comparative analysis is performed, benchmarking our proposed method against recent competing algorithms in real world applications to demonstrate its superiority.

25. Hysteresis Current Control for Six-Phase Induction Motor Drives With Reduced Ripple and Improved Tracking Based on Subspace Decomposition and Restrained Voltage Vectors

Abstract

Six-phase induction motor (6PIM) drives offer enhanced fault tolerance and reduced per-phase ratings. Hysteresis current control (HCC) is attractive for 6PIMs because it is simple, robust and fast. HCC is conventionally implemented so that each leg voltage is directly set based on the respective phase-current error. However, this approach does not consider that, in multiphase drives, phase voltages and currents are related through a combination of equivalent impedances corresponding to various subspaces. In general, there is a notable dissimilarity between these impedances, being typically small for secondary ($\bm {xy}$) subspaces. This can cause large current distortion and poor reference tracking. This article proposes an improved HCC for 6PIM drives. Instead of directly inputting the per-phase current error to the hysteresis comparator and directly applying the switching states chosen by it, the input and output components associated with different subspaces are segregated. The input and output $\bm {xy}$ components are nullified in open loop so that the $\bm {xy}$ impedance no longer affects the HCC behavior, even if low. This prevents the disrupting $\bm {xy}$ currents, ensures effective tracking of the torque/flux-producing $\bm {\alpha \beta }$ reference current, and enables reconfiguration-less fault tolerance. Experiments using 6PIMs with different winding configurations corroborate the significant advantages of the proposal.

Abstract

Accurately estimating the state-of-charge (SOC) of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in electric vehicles is a challenging task due to the complex dynamics of the battery and the varying operating conditions. To address this, this paper proposes the establishment of an Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT)-based digital twin (DT) through the Microsoft Azure services, incorporating components for data collection, time synchronization, processing, modeling, and decision visualization. Within this framework, the readily available measurements in the LIB module, including voltage, current, and operating temperature, are utilized, providing advanced information about the LIBs' SOC and facilitating accurate determination of the electric vehicle (EV) range. This proposed data-driven SOC-estimation-based DT framework was developed with a supervised voting ensemble regression machine learning (ML) approach using the Azure ML service. To facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of historical driving cycles and ensure the SOC-estimation-based DT framework is accurate, this study used three application programming interfaces (APIs), namely Google Directions API, Google Elevation API, and OpenWeatherMap API, to collect the data and information necessary for analyzing and interpreting historical driving patterns, for the reference EV model, which closely emulates the dynamics of a real-world battery electric vehicle (BEV). Notably, the findings demonstrate that the proposed strategy achieves a normalized root mean square error (NRMSE) of 1.1446 and 0.02385 through simulation and experimental studies, respectively. Abstract

The move towards serious adoption of solar energy is now beginning to take shape. The use of solar energy is now being seen as part of the energy mix for the marine sector in the Nile river and solar power will most likely play an important role in helping to reduce fuel consumption and emissions from marine units, especially as further solar energy- related technologies are developed. In fact, the sea freight shipping industry has begun to practically look at ways to reduce fuel consumption and operate in a more environmentally friendly way. This paper reports on a project which is concerned with the utilization of solar power to run cruise ships (floating hotel) in the Nile river. The main concern is the performance of PV modules in the Aswan/ Luxor area where the ambient temperature is elevated most of the year which reduces solar panel efficiency, and consequently, the rewarding returns on the investment and shortening the payback periods. In this paper, this concern is addressed and a new methodology to cooldown the PV modules and maintain the PV power output figures within an acceptable margin is presented. The proposed system is a mix of forced air draft and water injection at the backside of the P V module, in addition, a film of absorbent foam sheet is fitted to maintain the contact of water injected with the back sheet of the PV module and secure the continuous cooling of water injected with the forced air draft. A special experimental setup is designed, fabricated and arranged to carry on two different cooling techniques to cool down the solar panels one with airflow alone and the second with airflow and water injection at the backside of the panel. Abstract

The results of an analysis to minimize the energy usage of the Middle East Oil Tankage & Pipelines Company (MIDTAP) marine port in Alexandria, Egypt are presented in this paper. The project takes a comprehensive approach to data collection from the MIDTAP marine port's maintenance department, an energy analysis, and the development of a building simulation model. Many energy-saving measures have been found during the energy audit, including replacing existing florescent lights with LED lamps and a lighting control system, as well as reflecting solar radiation with window film. The building energy model was created with DesignBuilder and then calibrated based on the field observations and measurements. Several energy management options were assessed using the calibrated model, based on a calculation of simulation and real electricity usage in KWh for the year 2020.
