4. The Impact of Brief Reflective Responses on Student Performance

Abstract

One-minute papers allow students to process what they learned during class and improve student performance. However, this activity can become monotonous and takes significantly longer than the name implies. The research described here tests the effectiveness of a briefer, more flexible version of this technique to increase the perceived relevance of the material and, in turn, performance. Students were randomly assigned to either self-generate a reflective response or answer a content-specific question generated by the instructor at the end of class. Students positively evaluated the brief reflective response activity. Moreover, answering the self-generated reflective responses was associated with greater perceived relevancy of course material to students' daily lives compared to answering the content-specific questions. Perceived relevancy, in turn, was associated with higher examination grades. Thus, brief reflective responses are a useful tool to increase meaningful connections to course material which enhances examination performance.

Abstract

Exposure to adversity or maltreatment is known to correlate with high-risk behaviors that can increase the risk of contact with the criminal justice system; however, few studies have focused on the role of trauma symptoms and other behaviors that may develop in response to exposure to adverse life events. We also know far less about the role of these experiences in young men compared to young women who have been in contact with the youth justice system. In this study, we examine the associations between different patterns of trauma symptomatology and adverse childhood experienced (ACEs), substance use, behavioral difficulties, and re-offending in a sample of 141 young men under the supervision of a Youth Justice (YJ) agency in Australia. Trauma symptoms were reported by over ninety percent of participants, with Latent Class Analysis used to identify four subgroups of young men based on their clustering of trauma symptomatology: internalizing, externalizing, high, and low trauma symptoms groups. The characteristics of young men across these groups were, however, remarkably similar. Over four-fifths scored in the clinical range for substance use and externalizing behavior problems, while recidivism was reported in over three-quarters of young men across all groups. These findings have implications for the development of trauma-informed responses by specialist adolescent mental health services as well as for adult forensic services that seek to understand the developmental origins of psychopathology and offending behavior. Abstract

Objective: Drink offers are related to increased alcohol consumption, which is linked to sexual activity among college students. However, offers of alcohol may increase the odds of sexual activity that night independent of the amount of alcohol consumed. Participants: 540 undergraduate students were recruited for a longitudinal study of daily experiences. Method: Participants completed up to four annual waves of a measurement burst daily diary study. Using these longitudinal data, we examined whether receiving a drink offer on a given night was related to greater odds of having sex. Results: Receiving a drink offer (but not the number of drinks accepted) is related to greater odds of having sex, controlling for drinking level. Conclusions: Receiving a drink offer is uniquely related to odds of having sex when controlling for the amount of alcohol participants consumed. Abstract

Objective: The Theory of Planned Behavior has been applied to COVID-19 protective behaviors, but evidence suggests this theory may be less predictive over time and less valid in individualistic societies. The current study applied this theory among American college students as vaccines became available and added perceived risk. Participants: 242 undergraduate students at two universities. Methods: Participants completed an online survey and analyses were conducted using PROCESS. Results: Perceived risk was indirectly related to protective behavior via intentions which were significantly impacted by positive attitudes, descriptive norms, and perceived behavioral control. Conclusions: Even within an individualistic culture and when vaccines were becoming available, the Theory of Planned Behavior predicts protective behaviors. Including risk perception also furthers understanding of this theory by identifying one factor related to norms and perceived behavioral control. These results may inform the design of interventions designed to increase compliance with pandemic-related policies and other positive behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a source of stress that may have increased drinking level overall and, more specifically, drinking to cope motivation. The current study tests whether specific domains of pandemic-related experiences are related to drinking to cope motivation and drinking level and whether drinking to cope motivation moderates the association between pandemic experiences and alcohol consumption. Participants (N = 292, 57% women) reported on their positive and negative experiences during the pandemic, their drinking to cope motivation, and their typical weekly alcohol consumption. Regression analyses revealed that negative emotional health and well-being experiences were related to higher levels of drinking to cope motivation. Negative social activity experiences were related to higher weekly alcohol consumption. In addition, negative home life experiences were related to higher consumption among individuals with high drinking to cope motivation and positive experiences were related to lower consumption among individuals with high drinking to cope motivation. These findings underscore the importance of considering the domain of experiences during the current pandemic and future mass crisis events and may provide insight for designing interventions to prevent drinking to cope. Abstract

One reason cited for heavy drinking during college is the lack of parental oversight as emerging adults leave home (Merrill & Carey, 2016). College is often the first time that individuals have lived away from their parents and the physical and social environments of college set the stage for risky drinking (Wilkinson & Ivsins, 2017). However, most college students communicate with their parents regularly and such communication is related to lower alcohol consumption (Small et al., 2011). Students who live near home may also continue to interact with parents in person even if they no longer live at home. Thus, the current study extends this literature by examining face-to-face parental contact as a factor in college students’ alcohol consumption.

Abstract

Considerable research examining the stress-alcohol link has examined social-learning based individual difference factors (e.g., expectancies, motives) as potential moderators and mediators of this association (see Greeley & Oei, 1999; Cooper et al., 2015). Relatively less work has examined the influence of the social environment. For college students, who are more likely to drink with others versus alone (Christiansen et al., 2002), we argue that the social environment in which drinking occurs is a necessary component in understanding alcohol consumption. Given the fundamental role of the need to belong in motivating human behavior (see Baumeister & Leary, 1995), we also posit that social stress is more likely to motivate social alcohol consumption than other forms of stress (i.e., academic stress). Specifically, the current study uses daily diary methodology to examine whether daily social and academic stress are related to college students’ nightly alcohol consumption with others, whether these associations are moderated by peer drinking that night, and whether social alcohol consumption buffers against next-day social stress.

Abstract

Although models of health behavior posit intentions as a primary predictor of drinking behavior (Cooke et al., 2016), there remains an intention-behavior gap (Sheeran & Webb, 2016) such that alcohol consumption cannot be fully explained by drinking intentions. To better understand the intention-behavior link with respect to alcohol use, the current studies examine possible moderators of this association (i.e., past drinking behavior and the individuals’ current social environment) using a micro-longitudinal (daily) design. In addition, consistent with research indicating that less intentional drinking is more strongly related to drinking-related problems (Fairlie et al., 2019), we examine whether daily intentions moderate the effect of drinking on next day negative outcomes.

Abstract

Narcissism and Hook-up Behavior during COVID. Main effect of Narcissism (Primary Hypotheses): 1.) Narcissism will be positively associated with hook-up frequency during COVID. Specifically, people higher (vs. lower) in narcissism will report a greater frequency of hook-ups during COVID with people inside and outside their pods. 2.) Narcissism will be negatively associated with precautionary behaviors prior to hooking up during COVID. Specifically, people higher (vs. lower) in narcissism will report engaging in fewer precautionary behaviors (e.g., getting tested) prior to hooking up. Potential Mechanisms (Mediation Hypotheses): We will test three potential explanations for the relationships between Narcissism and risky hook-up behavior during COVID. That is, we will explore whether decreases in empathy for vulnerable populations, decreases in inclusion of important others in the self, and increased approval of casual sex mediate the relation between narcissism and hook-up frequency and the relation between narcissism and precautionary hook-up behavior.

Abstract

Objective: Research links approval-contingent self-worth to college drinking but has not differentiated social and solitary consumption. High approval-contingent self-worth individuals might drink socially to derive approval. Method: In a sample of 832 undergraduates, approval-contingent self-worth and drinking motives were measured in an initial questionnaire, and social and solitary consumption were reported daily for 30 days. Results: Results indicated an overall positive association between approval-contingent self-worth and social consumption and positive indirect effects via social and enhancement motivations, but a negative indirect effect via conformity motivation. The association between approval-contingent self-worth and solitary alcohol consumption was nonsignificant because of a negative direct effect counteracted by a positive total indirect effect. Conclusions: Results highlight the importance of drinking motives and of distinguishing between social and solitary consumption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The relation between religiosity and well-being is one of the most researched topics in the psychology of religion, yet the directionality and robustness of the effect remains debated. Here, we adopted a many-analysts approach to assess the robustness of this relation based on a new cross-cultural dataset (N = 10, 535 participants from 24 countries). We recruited 120 analysis teams to investigate (1) whether religious people self-report higher well-being, and (2) whether the relation between religiosity and self-reported well-being depends on perceived cultural norms of religion (i.e., whether it is considered normal and desirable to be religious in a given country). In a two-stage procedure, the teams first created an analysis plan and then executed their planned analysis on the data. For the first research question, all but 3 teams reported positive effect sizes with credible/confidence intervals excluding zero (median reported beta = 0.120). For the second research question, this was the case for 65% of the teams (median reported beta = 0.039). While most teams applied (multilevel) linear regression models, there was considerable variability in the choice of items used to construct the independent variables, the dependent variable, and the included covariates.

38. Love Sick: Attachment Anxiety and COVID-Era Romantic Encounters Among College Students

Abstract

The current research explored how attachment anxiety influences attitudes and behaviors in romantic contexts among single emerging adults during COVID-19. Study 1 (n= 242) revealed that, despite increased risk perceptions, emerging adults high in attachment anxiety report decreased cautiousness and a greater percentage of hook-ups outside their pod/bubble. Attitudes about masking with a romantic partner mirrored those of low anxiety emerging adults. In study 2 (n= 186), we used a quasi-experimental design to explore whether romantic (vs. control) contexts differentially impact attitudes toward masking. High anxiety emerging adults reported somewhat increased risk perceptions across condition, but more negative attitudes toward masking and less confidence in helping a partner mask in the romantic (vs. control) condition. Low anxiety emerging adults’ attitudes and confidence were unaffected by condition. Results suggest that emerging adults high in anxiety, while generally more concerned about COVID, appeared to reduce cautiousness in romantic contexts.

40. Too Tired to Drink? Daily Associations of Sleep Duration and Fatigue With Own and Others' Alcohol Consumption.

Abstract

Objective: To better understand how sleep is associated with alcohol consumption among college students, the present study tested whether last night's sleep duration and current day fatigue were associated with being around others who were drinking that night and, if so, with alcohol consumption. Method: College student drinkers (N = 540; mean age = 18.78 years; 52% female; 86% White) reported daily for 30 days yearly for up to 4 years on aspects of their sleep, their own alcohol use, and the perceived drinking of others in an intensive longitudinal burst design. Results: Participants were less likely to report that they were with others who were drinking on evenings following higher than average sleep duration or greater than average daytime fatigue. In addition, experiencing greater than average daytime fatigue was associated with a lower likelihood of consuming any alcohol and lower levels of alcohol consumption at the daily level. Thus, daytime fatigue may be protective against alcohol consumption through both selection and behavior moderation. Conclusions: Results may be useful in the development of interventions to prevent heavy drinking among college students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objectives: We examined daily associations between drinking intentions and drinking behaviour and tested past drinking behaviour and current social environment as potential moderators of the daily intention‐behaviour association. We expected both more frequent past drinking and being in a high drinking environment to weaken the intention‐behaviour association. We also tested intentionality as a moderator of the association between alcohol consumption and next‐day negative outcomes, expecting that less intentional alcohol consumption would be related to greater stress and regret. Design: We tested these hypotheses using two separate micro‐longitudinal studies of college students (Ns = 1,641, 540). Methods: In two samples, participants completed bursts of data collection in which they indicated their previous alcohol consumption and then completed 30 days of diary surveys in which they reported their alcohol consumption and social environment the previous evening and their levels of stress, regret, and drinking intentions that day. Result: Consistent with our predictions, drinking intentions more strongly predicted drinking behaviour among individuals with less frequent past drinking behaviour, and, in Sample 1, drinking intentions more strongly predicted drinking behaviour among individuals in a low drinking environment. Contrary to hypotheses, results indicated that individuals with low drinking intentions were more likely to experience stress the next day, particularly if they consumed less alcohol. Greater consumption, however, was related to greater odds of experiencing regret, but this was stronger among individuals with higher drinking intentions. Conclusions: Findings are discussed in terms of the complex interplay between intentions and both social environment and contextual factors with respect to predicting drinking level and related problems.
