Abstract

The X-IFU is the cryogenic spectrometer onboard the future ATHENA X-ray observatory. It is based on a large array of TES microcalorimeters, which works in combination with a Cryogenic AntiCoincidence detector (CryoAC). This is necessary to reduce the particle background level thus enabling part of the mission science goals. Here we present the first joint test of X-IFU TES array and CryoAC Demonstration Models, performed in a FDM setup. We show that it is possible to operate properly both detectors, and we provide a preliminary demonstration of the anti-coincidence capability of the system achieved by the simultaneous detection of cosmic muons., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Journal of Low Temperature Physics for LTD-19 special issue

5. Unveiling the Implications of Schematisation Choices in Fluvial Flood models : Dike breach induced floods in Betuwe Tieler en Culemborgerwaarden

Abstract

Flood modelling software is constantly updated, and new software is developed. This research showed the impact of several schematization choices on model results in D-HYDRO Large differences between simple weir flow equations for dike breach flow and the more accurate D-HYDRO calculations are found. Sensitivity factors in D-HYDRO make river flow direction very important. Alternative river schematisations, other that a detailed 2D grid are found to produce largely different results. This research has unveiled considerable limitations of the Verheij-vdKnaap equation for breach growth and has introduced viable alternatives. These alternatives include a flow velocity factor and are therefore sensitive to breach initiation moment and the underlying hydraulic conditions in the breach. In the distribution of water, fixed weirs reduce the flow velocity over elevated elements and can largely delay a flood wave compared to elevated grid cells. The effects of fixed weirs and waterways on flood simulation results are largely dependent on their own size, the magnitude of the flood wave and the flooded area. This research can be used as a guide for modelers to improve the accuracy of current flood models and to make the right schematization choices for their modelling goals in future fluvial flood models.

8. The challenge of a rapidly changing regional seismic monitoring network: the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, USA

Abstract

The Pacific Northwest Seismic Network monitors seismicity in the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington as part of the U.S. Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS). The network has been in existence for more than fifty years and was initially focused on the Puget Sound region in western Washington and several of the Cascades volcanoes. It now covers all of Washington and most of Oregon. Over the decades, the instrumentation and processing software has changed significantly. For example, we mostly operated analog vertical-component short-period stations in the 1970s, 80s and 90s. We first added digital three-component broadband stations in the mid to late 1990s, and since 2000, continuously streaming three-component strong-motion stations. In the past five years, as a partner in the USGS ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning system, we have added hundreds of new strong-motion and/or broadband stations. All our data, waveforms as well as derived products, are publicly available. However, users of both our seismicity catalog and old waveform data need to understand that they come with caveats.Here we present several of these caveats including a study of the spatial and temporal variation of the magnitude of completeness of the PNSN catalog.&nbsp, The 28th IUGG General Assembly (IUGG2023) (Berlin 2023)
