With the continuous development and maturity of the fifth-generation mobile network (5G) technology, the demand for multimedia service access is increasing, which poses huge challenges to the connectivity, caching capabilities, and computing capabilities of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Therefore, edge computing, as the key to achieving efficient edge data preprocessing and improving data access and response, is considered to be a hot technology for the next generation of mobile networks and future development. However, the current imbalance of computing resources on the edge, the lack of collaboration between nodes, and the lack of adaptability of optimization methods in a dynamic environment pose challenges to the development of edge computing. To strengthen the collaboration of nodes in the edge environment, we designed a collaborative task offloading and resource scheduling framework, including macro base station collaborative space (ξ BSCS) and micro base station collaborative space (μ BSCS) to balance computing and caching resources in heterogeneous wireless networks. In addition, we formulate the collaborative computing offloading problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP), and deep reinforcement learning (DRL) agents are deployed to make task offloading and resource allocation decisions. The DRL agent is deployed in each base station (BS) in a decentralized manner, observing the available computing and caching resources on the edge side, and designing an optimal resource allocation strategy for task offloading to maximize the benefits of the long-term system. The data-driven simulation results verify that the proposed scheme is effective in reducing the overall consumption of the system, maximizing the long-term benefits of edge resource allocation, and improving the success rate of task completion. Poor stability and difficult uptake of natural polysaccharides have been the main problems in their application. The purpose of this study was to optimize the preparation conditions of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua polysaccharides liposomes (PCPL) and to investigate the immune enhancement activity of PCPL in vitro and in vivo, with a view to discovering new ways of natural polysaccharide application. The optimal preparation conditions of PCPL were as follows: the adding amount of Tween 80 of 0.5 %, the ultrasound time of 2 min and the ultrasound times of once. Under these conditions, the entrapment efficiency, drug loading rate and particle size of PCPL were 38.033 %±0.050, 2.172 %±0.003 and 146 nm, which indicated that PCPL with small particle size could be prepared by the reverse-phase evaporation method. Furthermore, PCPL promoted proliferation, phagocytosis, and secretion of nitric oxide and related cytokines in RAW264.7 cells. Moreover, PCPL improved spleen and thymus indices, increased the number or proportion of red blood cells, platelets, and lymphocytes in the blood, and ameliorated spleen and thymus atrophy in immunosuppressed mice. Background: Plasma biomarkers have emerged as a promising approach for characterizing pathophysiology in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Objective: We aimed to characterize plasma biomarkers for AD and neurodegeneration across the AD clinical continuum, and to assess their ability to differentiate between AD, MCI, and normal cognition. Methods: This population-based study engaged 1,446 rural-dwelling older adults (age ≥60 years, 61.0% women) derived from MIND-China; of these, 402 were defined with MCI and 142 with AD. Plasma amyloid-β (Aβ), total tau (t-tau), and neurofilament light chain (NfL) concentrations were analyzed using the Simoa platform. Data were analyzed using linear and logistic regression models, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis. Results: Across the AD clinical spectrum, plasma Aβ40 and NfL increased, whereas Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio decreased. Plasma t-tau was higher in people with AD dementia than those with MCI or normal cognition. Plasma NfL outperformed other biomarkers in differentiating AD from normal cognition (area under the ROC curve [AUC] = 0.75), but all plasma biomarkers performed poorly to distinguish MCI from normal cognition (AUC <0.60). Plasma NfL in combination with age, sex, education, and APOE genotype yielded the AUC of 0.87 for differentiating between AD and normal cognition, 0.79 between AD and MCI, and 0.64 between MCI and normal cognition. Conclusions: In this Chinese population, AD plasma biomarkers vary by age, sex, and APOE genotype. An iron‐catalyzed trifluoromethylation of indole‐tethered alkene with Togni's reagent to construct CF3‐containing spiro[indole‐3,3′‐pyrrolidine] and tetrahydrocarbazole derivatives under mild and convenient conditions has been disclosed. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction proceed through a CF3 radical addition to the alkene, followed by sequential dearomatizing spiocyclization of the indole and oxidation to afford the spiro[indole‐3,3′‐pyrrolidine] derivatives. Current knowledge of Alzheimer's disease (AD) etiology and effective therapy remains limited. Thus, the identification of biomarkers is crucial to improve the detection and treatment of patients with AD. Using robust rank aggregation method to analyze the microarray data from Gene Expression Omnibus database, we identified 1138 differentially expressed genes in AD. We then explored 13 hub genes by weighted gene co-expression network analysis, least absolute shrinkage, and selection operator, and logistic regression in the training dataset. The detection model, which composed of CD163, CDC42SE1, CECR6, CSF1R, CYP27A1, EIF4E3, H2AFJ, IFIT2, IL10RA, KIAA1324, PSTPIP1, SLA , and TBC1D2 genes, along with APOE gene, showed that the area under the curve for detecting AD was 0.821 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.782–0.861) and the model was validated in ADNI dataset (area under the curve = 0.776; 95%CI = 0.686–0.865). The confusing use of Polygonati Rhizoma (PR) and Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (POR) poses an unpredictable threat to the health of consumers. Sensitive, nondestructive, rapid, and multicomponent techniques for their detection are sought after. In this study, a low-cost, short-wavelength (898–1668 nm), and handheld near-infrared (NIR) spectrometer combined with multivariate spectral evaluation methods was used to establish calibration models for identifying PR and POR. NIR spectra were treated with a standard normal variate (SNV) before performing chemometric approaches. Then principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were tested for calibration model development. The PCA results showed that spectral differences existed between the two herbs. However, the evaluation techniques could not separate them with the required accuracy. The PLS-DA calibration model, on the other hand, could separate the two herbs according to their spectral information with the prediction accuracy of >98.3%. Thus, it has been proven that a rapid, green, and low-cost method to support on-site and practical inspection through a handheld NIR instrument has been established to identify PR and POR and ensure the safety of the clinical medication. This study investigated the capability for fin regeneration in zebrafish larvae with the mechanism of FCS isolated from green and purple sea cucumbers Apostichopus japonicus (G-FCS and P-FCS). HPGPC determined that mean molecular weight of purified G-FCS and P-FCS is 19.5 and 18.8 kDa, and the FT-IR spectrum displayed similar characteristic absorption peaks. AFM images presented that G-FCS was shown as a spherical polysaccharide, while P-FCS molecules exhibited elongated chains. For the regeneration examination, FCS increased the regrowth area of the larval fin at 48 hours postamputation with enhanced locomotor behaviors, and the transcription levels of regeneration-related genes (Wnt10a, msx1b, fgf20a, bmp2a, bmp4, and igf2b) were upregulated. Moreover, FCS promoted the mRNA expression of inflammatory factors (iNOS, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-10, and IFN-γ) and TLR/NF-κB pathway-related genes (TLR3, TLR4a, NF-κb, and MyD88). The Western blot analyses of TNF-α and IL-1β supported that FCS enhanced immune response. ELISA results indicated that FCSs increased the contents of NO, CAT, SOD, and G6PD. To develop agar derivatives with good antibacterial activity and decreased gelling and melting temperatures, two agar–gentamycin conjugates with 9.20% and 12.68% gentamicin immobilized were fabricated by oxidation, Schiff base and reduction reaction, and characterized by a Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance and an elemental analyzer. It was found that the modifications changed the intermolecular interactions, leading to decreased gelling and melting temperatures for the oxidized agar and slightly increased gelling and melting temperatures for agar–gentamycin conjugates. Further studies of antimicrobial properties showed that the two agar–gentamycin conjugates possessed good antibacterial activity, which was positively correlated with the dosage and the immobilization rate of gentamicin. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of agar–gentamycin conjugates with higher immobilization rates of gentamicin against Escherichia coli were 39.1 μg/mL and 156.2 μg/mL, respectively, and the MICs and MBCs against Staphylococcus aureus were 19.5 μg/mL and 78.1 μg/mL, respectively. A biofilm test indicated that certain concentrations of agar–gentamycin conjugate could effectively inhibit the biofilm formation of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a widely-used plasticizer that is dispersed in various environments, causing significant pollution and health risks. The toxic mechanism of DBP has been discussed in recent years, while the susceptibility of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) to DBP exposure and the resulting damage remain unclear. In this study, maternal zebrafish were exposed to environmentally relevant concentration of DBP for 0, 2, 4, and 6 weeks. Results showed that DBP exposure impaired health status, leading to the reduced body length and weight, condition factor, hepatosomatic index, and gonadosomatic index. Furthermore, DBP exposure induced oxidative stress and ATP deficiency in the gill and liver in a time-dependent manner. The oxidized mtDNA (ox-mtDNA) levels in the D-loop and ND1 regions were assessed in different tissues, showing distinct response patterns. The high energy-consuming tissues such as heart, brain, gill, and liver exhibited elevated susceptibility to mitochondrial damage, with a rapid increase in ox-mtDNA levels in the short term. Conversely, in muscle, ovary, eggs, and offspring, ox-mtDNA gradually accumulated over the exposure period. Notably, the ox-mtDNA levels in the D-loop region of blood showed a prompt response to DBP exposure, making it convenient for evaluation. Additionally, decreased hatching rates, increased mortality, lipoperoxidation, and depressed swimming performance were observed in offspring following maternal DBP exposure, suggesting the inherited impairments of maternal mtDNA. These findings highlight the potential for ox-mtDNA to serve as a convenient biomarker for environmental contamination, aiding in ecological risk assessment and forewarning systems in aquatic environment. Heritability, the proportion of phenotypic variance explained by genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in unrelated individuals, is an important measure of the genetic contribution to human diseases and plays a critical role in studying the genetic architecture of human diseases. Linear mixed model (LMM) has been widely used for SNP heritability estimation, where variance component parameters are commonly estimated by using a restricted maximum likelihood (REML) method. REML is an iterative optimization algorithm, which is computationally intensive when applied to large-scale datasets (e.g. UK Biobank). To facilitate the heritability analysis of large-scale genetic datasets, we develop a fast approach, minimum norm quadratic unbiased estimator (MINQUE) with batch training, to estimate variance components from LMM (LMM.MNQ.BCH). In LMM.MNQ.BCH, the parameters are estimated by MINQUE, which has a closed-form solution for fast computation and has no convergence issue. Batch training has also been adopted in LMM.MNQ.BCH to accelerate the computation for large-scale genetic datasets. Through simulations and real data analysis, we demonstrate that LMM.MNQ.BCH is much faster than two existing approaches, GCTA and BOLT-REML. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Automatic classification is one of the hot topics in the field of information retrieval and natural language processing, but it still faces many problems to be solved. The classic automated classification approach has a sluggish classification speed and poor processing accuracy for resources with a large quantity of data. Based on this, an automated classification approach based on the integration of various neural networks for fundamental nursing teaching materials was presented. The automatic classification method of teaching resources was designed by extracting the characteristics of teaching resources, establishing the model of multiple neural network integration, and designing the classification index of basic nursing teaching resources. The experimental findings suggest that this technique has higher chi-square test parameters and better outcomes for the automated classification of large instructional materials than the classic rough set automatic classification method. Herein, Mn–W dual‐metal sites on WO3 are designed toward efficient N2 photoreduction via controlled Mn doping. Impressively, the optimal 2.3% Mn‐doped WO3 (Mn‐WO3) exhibits a remarkable ammonia (NH3) production rate of 425 µmol gcat.−1 h−1, representing the best catalytic performance among the ever‐reported tungsten oxide‐based photocatalysts for N2 fixation. Quasi in situ synchrotron radiation X‐ray spectroscopy directly identifies that the Mn–W dual‐metal sites can enhance the polarization of the adsorbed N2, which is beneficial to the N2 activation. Further theoretical calculations reveal that the increased polarization is originated from the electron back‐donation into the antibonding orbitals of the adsorbed N2, hence lowering the reaction energy barrier toward the N2 photofixation. Little research has been done on the failure of oil booms when wave-current coupling is present. This study investigates the motion response and oil-stopping failure of the oil containment boom experimentally and numerically. The oil containment effect under wave-current and the motion response of the oil containment boom were investigated through experiments. Using CFD software FLUENT for simulation, the study established a multiphase flow analysis model to simulate the oil containment of an oil containment boom and used the volume of fluid method (VOF) to track the oil-water interface. The study compares the experimental and numerical results, which are coincident with each other, and validates the validity of the numerical model. Numerical methods are used to analyze the effects of various working conditions (water flow rate, wave parameter, wave reversal, skirt height, and initial oil spill volume) on the oil containment effect of the oil containment boom. The results show that the presence of waves accelerates the oil containment failure; compared to the wave-current flowing in the same direction, wave-current reversal is better for oil containment, and the initial oil spill volume primarily affects the thickening of the oil layer, which provides an important reference for the design of an effective oil containment boom. • This study investigates the oil-stopping effect of the boom experimentally and numerically. • Increased oil film thickness accelerates oil-stopping failure under pure water flow conditions. • Wave height and wave period can affect the oil-stopping effect of booms. • The oil-stopping effect of the boom is improved as the height of the boom's skirt. • The initial oil spill volume can affect the amount of oil loss and the velocity of oil-stopping. For paired binary data, the hybrid method and the score method are often recommended for use to calculate the confidence interval for risk difference. These asymptotic intervals do not control the coverage probability. We propose to develop a new score interval with continuity correction to further improve the performance of the existing intervals. The traditional correction value may be too large which leads to a wide interval. For that reason, we propose three different correction values to identify the optimal correction interval with balanced coverage probability and interval width. From simulation studies, we find that a small correction value for the score interval has good performance. Nanobubble water (NBW) could improve methane production from anaerobic digestion (AD) of corn straw without secondary contamination. In this study, the effect of carbon dioxide nanobubble water (CO 2 -NBW) volumes (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%) on methane production from corn straw was investigated. The results showed that addition of CO 2 -NBW could improve methane production and promote substrate degradation in AD process. The highest cumulative methane production of 132.16 mL g−1VS added was obtained in the 100% CO 2 -NBW added reactor, which was 17% higher than that in the control group. Additionally, the addition of CO 2 -NBW could mitigate the sharp decrease in pH by acting as a buffer. CO 2 -NBW could also enhance microorganism activity throughout the AD process. The electron transport system (ETS) activity was increased by 23%, while the β-glucosidase, dehydrogenase (DHA), and coenzyme F 420 activities were increased by 15%, 23%, and 11%, respectively, at optimum addition of CO 2 -NBW. Meanwhile, addition of CO 2 -NBW accelerated the production and consumption of reducing sugar and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), promoting the reduction rates of TS (Total solid) and VS (Volatile solid). Background: Evidence has emerged that altered ventricular electrocardiogram profiles are associated with dementia, but the neuropathological mechanisms underlying their associations are poorly understood. Objective: To investigate the interrelationships of ventricular electrocardiogram profiles with dementia and plasma Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers among older adults. Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study included 5,153 participants (age ≥65 years; 57.3% women) living in rural communities in China; of these, 1,281 had data on plasma amyloid-β (Aβ)40, Aβ42, total-tau, and neurofilament light chain (NfL) protein. The QT, QTc, JT, JTc, QRS intervals, and QRS axis were derived from the 10-second electrocardiogram recording. The DSM-IV criteria were followed for clinical diagnosis of dementia, the NIA-AA criteria for AD, and the NINDS-AIREN criteria for vascular dementia (VaD). Data were analyzed using general linear models, multinomial logistic models, and restricted cubic splines. Results: Of the 5,153 participants, 299 (5.8%) were diagnosed with dementia, including 194 with AD and 94 with VaD. Prolonged QT, QTc, JT, and JTc intervals were significantly associated with all-cause dementia, AD, and VaD (p < 0.05). Left QRS axis deviation was significantly associated with all-cause dementia and VaD (p < 0.01). In the subsample of plasma biomarkers (n = 1,281), prolonged QT, JT, and JTc intervals were significantly associated with a lower Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio and higher plasma NfL concentrations (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Alterations in ventricular repolarization and depolarization are independently associated with all-cause dementia, AD, VaD, and AD plasma biomarkers in older adults (age ≥65 years). Here, we studied how anthropogenic impacts alter nitrogen metabolism in river sediments by comparing the metagenomic function of microbial communities between relatively primitive and human-disturbed sediments. The contents of organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (TN), NO 3 −−N and NO 2 −−N were higher in primitive site than in polluted sites, which might be due to vegetation density, sediment type, hydrology, etc. Whereas, NH 4 +−N content was higher in midstream and downstream, indicating that nitrogen loading increased in the anthropogenic regions and subsequently leading higher NH 4 +−N. Hierarchical cluster analyses revealed significant changes in the community structure and functional potential between the primitive and human-affected sites. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated that Demequina , Streptomyces , Rubrobacter and Dechloromonas were the predominant denitrifiers. Ardenticatena and Dechloromonas species were the most important contributors to dissimilatory nitrate reduction. Furthermore, anthropogenic pollution significantly increased their abundance, and resulting in a decrease in NO 3 −, NO 2 −−N and an increase in NH 4 +−N contents. Air-nanobubble water (NBW) was applied to pre-acclimate anaerobically digested sludge that was then used as the inoculum in the two-stage anaerobic digestion (AD) of high saline (20 g NaCl/L) food waste (FW) to optimize NBW application in the AD of high saline FW. K+ was simultaneously supplemented during the methanogenic stage to resist the inhibition of salt on methanogens. Results showed that after the second pre-acclimation cycle, the inoculum activity was increased 27% in the Air-NBW supplemented reactor in comparison to the deionized water (DW) supplemented one. In the first-stage AD, H 2 yield was enhanced by 46% in the Air-NBW pre-acclimated sludge reactor compared with the DW pre-acclimated sludge reactor. Besides, supplementation of KOH in the methanogenic stage could enhance methane production by 17–25% in the DW reactors at initial pH 7.5, 8.0, and 9.0 when compared to the control reactor (using NaOH adjusted initial pH to 7.5), respectively. Background: The longitudinal associations of sleep timing and time in bed (TIB) with dementia and cognitive decline in older adults are unclear. Methods: This population‐based cohort study used data from 1982 participants who were aged ≥60 years, free of dementia, and living in rural communities in western Shandong, China. At the baseline (2014) and follow‐up (2018) examinations, sleep parameters were assessed using standard questionnaires. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE). Dementia was diagnosed following the DSM‐IV criteria, and the NIA‐AA criteria for Alzheimer disease (AD). Data were analyzed using restricted cubic splines, Cox proportional‐hazards models, and general linear models. Results: During the mean follow‐up of 3.7 years, dementia was diagnosed in 97 participants (68 with AD). Restricted cubic spline curves showed J‐shaped associations of sleep duration, TIB, and rise time with dementia risk, and a reverse J‐shaped association with mid‐sleep time. When sleep parameters were categorized into tertiles, the multivariable‐adjusted hazard ratio (HR) of incident dementia was 1.69 (95%CI 1.01–2.83) for baseline sleep duration >8 hours (vs. 7–8 h), 2.17 (1.22–3.87) for bedtime before 9 p.m. (vs. 10 p.m. or later), and 2.00 (1.23–3.24) for mid‐sleep time before 1 a.m. (vs. 1–1.5 a.m.). Early bedtime and mid‐sleep time were significantly associated with incident AD (HR range: 2.25–2.51; p < 0.05). Among individuals who were free of dementia at follow‐up, baseline long TIB, early bedtime and mid‐sleep time, early and late rise time, and prolonged TIB and advanced bedtime and mid‐sleep time from baseline to follow‐up were associated with a greater decline in MMSE score (p < 0.05). These associations with cognitive decline were statistically evident mainly among men or participants who were aged 60–74 years. Conclusions: Long TIB and early sleep timing are associated with an increased risk of dementia, and the associations with greater cognitive decline are evident only among older people aged 60–74 years and men. Most previous studies have focused on the effects of salt on anaerobic digestion (AD) for hydrogen or methane production. However, the effects of salt on two-stage AD and the related approaches to mitigate the adverse effects of high salinity on hydrogen and/or methane production were seldom addressed. In this study, addition of Air-nanobubble water (Air-NBW) was adopted to mitigate the inhibition of high salinity on co-production of hydrogen and methane from two-stage AD of food waste (FW). In the Air-NBW added reactors with 0–30 g NaCl/L, hydrogen yield was increased by 21–65% with the subsequent methane yield elevated by 14–43% when compared to the corresponding deionized water (DW) group. This study for the first time confirmed that when two-stage AD of FW was exposed to the same salinity level, addition of Air-NBW could enhance enzymatic activities at the individual stage. Results of electron transport system (ETS) activity further demonstrate that addition of Air-NBW may promote the electron transfer associated with the synthesis of hydrogen and methane. To develop a novel asymmetric nanofiber membrane with antioxidant and antibacterial activities, biocompatible polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) and polycaprolactone (PCL) were used as carriers to load water-soluble tea tree extract (TTE) and hydrophobic tea tree oil (TTO) via electrospinning and electrostatic spraying, respectively, which was named as TTE-PVP-3/TTO-PCL. The results show that uniform TTE-PVP nanofibers with an average diameter of 95 ± 27 nm could be obtained when the mass ratio of TTE to PVP was set as 1:3. Homogeneous TTO/PCL microspheres with an average size of 4.38 ± 0.79 µm could be obtained when the propulsion speed was 0.08 mm/min and the voltage was 10 KV. The activity study showed that TTE could only improve the antioxidant activity of TTE-PVP-3/TTO-PCL, while TTO could improve the antibacterial activity effectively. Under experimental conditions, the inhibition zones of TTE-PVP-3/TTO-PCL against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were 7.50 ± 0.48 mm and 9.55 ± 0.45 mm, respectively, and its scavenging rates for 2,2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DHPP) and hydroxyl radical were 59.79 ± 4.10% and 61.02 ± 4.95%, respectively. Background: Little is known about how the obesogenic environment influences emotional states associated with glial responses and neuronal function. Here, we investigated glial reactivation and neuronal electrophysiological properties in emotion-related brain regions of high-fat diet (HFD) and ob/ob mice under chronic stress.Methods: The glial reactivation and neuronal activities in emotion-related brain regions were analyzed among normal diet mice (ND), HFD mice, wild-type mice, and ob/ob mice. To further activate or inhibit astrocytes in medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), we injected astrocytes specific Gq-AAV or Gi-AAV into mPFC and ongoing treated mice with CNO.Results: The results showed that obesogenic factors per se had no significant effect on neuronal activities in emotion-related brain regions, or on behavioral performance. However, exposure to a chronic stressor profoundly reduced the frequency of spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic currents (sIPSCs) and spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSCs) in the mPFC; depressive-like behaviors were seen, accompanied by significant upregulation of astrocyte reactivation. We identified resilient and susceptible mice among chronic social defeat stress-exposed HFD mice. As expected, astrocyte reactivity was upregulated, while neuronal activity was depressed, in the mPFC of susceptible compared to resilient mice. Furthermore, activating astrocytes resulted in similar levels of neuronal activity and depressive-like behaviors between resilient and susceptible mice. Additionally, inhibiting astrocyte reactivation in the mPFC of HFD mice upregulated neuronal activities and inhibited depressive-like behaviors.Conclusions: These observations indicate that obesogenic factors increase the risk of depression, and improve our understanding of the pathological relationship between obesity and depression. Catalytic reduction of nitrophenol is an important reaction for both the removal of nitrophenol-containing pollutants and the achievement of aminophenol chemicals. Bimetallic AuPd nanoparticles are studied as catalysts in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. Colloidal and inorganic material–supported AuPd catalysts are synthesized, and their catalytic activities are evaluated. The formation and structure of the catalysts are characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectronic spectroscopy. Layered materials including Mg(OH)2/MgO and graphene serve as supporters. Their remarkable promotion effects are confirmed on catalytic activities of AuPd nanoparticles. The apparent reaction rate constants are enhanced with low activation energies over the supported AuPd catalysts. Transformation of MgO to Mg(OH)2/MgO occurs during the supporting process of AuPd nanoparticles, resulting in the enhanced catalytic activity. Graphene with poly(vinylpyrrolidone) helps the formation of uniform and small-sized AuPd nanoparticles. The graphene-supported AuPd shows the most superior catalytic activity. The apparent rate constant is 10.5 min−1 in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol. The present layered materials would be suitable supporters for improving catalytic activities of other metal nanoparticles. Background: Few studies have examined occurrence and progression of cognitive impairment, no dementia (CIND) in rural China.Objective: To determine the prevalence and incidence of CIND in rural-dwelling Chinese older adults, and to examine risk and protective factors associated with progression to CIND and dementia.Methods: This population-based study included 2,781 dementia-free participants (age≥65 years) who were examined at baseline (2014) and followed in 2018. Demographic, epidemiological, clinical, and neuropsychological data were collected following a structured questionnaire. We defined CIND according to subjective cognitive complaints and the age- and education-specific Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score. Data were analyzed with the multinomial logistic regression models.Results: The overall prevalence of CIND was 10.54% and the incidence was 28.26 per 1,000 person-years. CIND at baseline was associated with the multi-adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 2.06 (95% confidence interval = 1.23-3.47) for incident dementia. Multinomial logistic regression analysis suggested that compared with no CIND, the multi-adjusted OR of incident CIND was 2.21 (1.51-3.23) for women and 0.62 (0.38-0.99) for high social support, whereas the multi-adjusted OR of incident dementia was 1.14 (1.09-1.18) for older age, 0.29 (0.16-0.53) for high education, and 2.91 (1.47-5.74) for having a stroke history.Conclusion: CIND affects over one-tenth of older adults living in rural communities of western Shandong province. People with CIND are twice as likely to progress to dementia as people without CIND. Background The relationships of neutrophils and cytokines with cognitive dysfunction are poorly defined. We aimed to investigate the association of peripheral blood absolute neutrophil count (ANC) with cognitive function in older adults and to further explore the mediating role of serum cytokines in this association. Methods This population-based cohort study included 1 666 dementia-free participants (age ≥60 years) derived from baseline examinations (March–September 2018) of the Multimodal Intervention to Delay Dementia and Disability in Rural China (MIND-China); of these, 1 087 participants completed follow-up examinations in October–December 2019. We used a neuropsychological test battery to assess episodic memory, verbal fluency, attention, and executive function at the baseline and follow-up examinations. We used Mindray BC-6800 automated hematology analyzer to measure ANC and Meso Scale Discovery to measure serum interleukin-6 (IL-6) and eotaxin-3. Results The linear regression analysis of cross-sectional data at baseline (n  = 1 666) suggested that increased ANC was significantly associated with a lower episodic memory z score (β coefficient: −0.149, 95% CI: −0.274 to −0.023) and lower long-delayed free recall z score (−0.216, −0.361 to −0.070). Serum IL-6 and eotaxin-3 could mediate 16.16% to 20.21% and 7.55% to 9.35%, respectively, of these associations. The analysis of longitudinal data (n  = 1 087) showed a J-shaped relationship of ANC with decline in episodic memory z score (p for nonlinear = .049), and a U-shaped relationship between ANC and decline in long-delayed free recall z score (p for nonlinear = .043). Surveillance is an intricate challenge worldwide especially in those complicated environments such as nuclear plants, banks, crowded areas, barns, etc. Deploying self‐powered wireless sensor nodes can increase the system's event detection capabilities by collecting environmental changes, while the incompatibility among components (energy harvesters, sensors, and wireless modules) limits their application. Here, a broadly compatible self‐powered visualized platform (SPVP) is reported to construct a passive internet of events (IoE) network for surveillance systems. By encoding electric signals into reference and working LEDs, SPVP can visualize resistance change generated by commercial resistive sensors with a broad working range (<107 Ω) and the transmission distance is up to 30 meters. Visible light signals are captured by surveillance cameras and processed by the cloud to achieve real‐time event monitoring and identification, which forms the passive IoE network. It is demonstrated that the passive‐IoE‐based surveillance system can detect intrusion, theft, fire alarm, and distress signals quickly (30 ms) for 106 cycles. Moreover, the confidential information can be encrypted by SPVPs and accessed through a phone application. This universal scheme may have huge potential for the construction of safe and smart cities. Background: Sedentary behavior is associated with cognitive impairment, but the neuropathological mechanisms underlying their associations are poorly understood. Objective: To investigate the associations of accelerometer-measured sedentary behavior patterns with brain structure and cognition, and further to explore the potential mechanisms. Methods: This community-based study included 2,019 older adults (age≥60 years, 59% women) without dementia derived from participants in the baseline examination of MIND-China (2018–2020). We assessed sedentary parameters using an accelerometer and cognitive function using a neuropsychological test battery. Structural brain markers were assessed on the structural brain MRI scans in a subsample (n = 1,009). Data were analyzed using the general linear, isotemporal substitution, and mediation models. Results: In the total sample (n = 2,019), adjusting for multiple covariates and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity, longer mean sedentary bout duration was linearly related with lower z-scores of global cognition, verbal fluency, and memory (ptrend < 0.05), whereas greater total sedentary time was linearly associated with lower z-scores of global cognition, verbal fluency, and memory only among individuals with long sedentary time (>10 h/day) (ptrend < 0.05); Breaking up sedentary time with same amount of light-intensity physical activity was significantly associated with higher verbal fluency and memory z-scores (p < 0.05). In the MRI subsample (n = 1,009), separately entering structural brain MRI markers into the mediation models substantially attenuated the associations of mean sedentary bout duration with global cognition, verbal fluency, and memory z-scores. Conclusion: Prolonged uninterrupted sedentary time is associated with poor global cognition, memory, and verbal fluency among rural older adults, and structural brain markers could partially mediate the association. The cross-sectional association between late-life obesity and dementia is often explained by the obesity paradox. We assessed the potential differential associations of various adiposity indices with dementia and subtypes of dementia in rural Chinese older adults. A population-based cross-sectional study. A total of 5277 participants (age ≥60 years; 57.23% female) who were living in rural communities and were examined in March–September 2018 for MIND-China. We used weight, height, and waist circumference (WC) to calculate 6 adiposity indices: body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), A Body Shape Index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), and Conicity Index (ConI). Dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD) were clinically diagnosed following the international criteria. Data were analyzed with logistic regression models. Of the 5277 participants, 303 were diagnosed with dementia, including 193 with AD and 99 with VaD. The multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (95% CI) of dementia associated with the highest (vs lowest) quintile of adiposity index was 2.32 (1.40–3.85) for WWI, 1.56 (1.03–2.36) for ABSI, and 1.40 (0.92–2.11) for ConI. Similarly, higher levels of these 3 adiposity indices were significantly associated with an increased likelihood of AD, whereas a higher BMI was associated with a decreased likelihood of AD. None of the 6 examined adiposity indices was significantly associated with VaD when adjusting for multiple confounders. The adiposity index WWI is linearly associated with the likelihood of dementia and AD. An increased WWI may be a clinical marker for the dementia syndrome and Alzheimer's dementia. Rationale: Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) shows promise for enhancing motor recovery in chronic spinal cord injuries and neurodegenerative diseases. However, human trials of AIH have reported significant variability in individual responses. Objectives: Identify individual factors (eg, genetics, age, and sex) that determine response magnitude of healthy adults to an optimized AIH protocol, acute intermittent hypercapnic-hypoxia (AIHH). Methods: In 17 healthy individuals (age = 27 ± 5 yr), associations between individual factors and changes in the magnitude of AIHH (15, 1-min O2 = 9.5%, CO2 = 5% episodes) induced changes in diaphragm motor-evoked potential (MEP) amplitude and inspiratory mouth occlusion pressures (P0.1) were evaluated. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes linked with mechanisms of AIH induced phrenic motor plasticity (BDNF, HTR2A, TPH2, MAOA, NTRK2) and neuronal plasticity (apolipoprotein E, APOE) were tested. Variations in AIHH induced plasticity with age and sex were also analyzed. Additional experiments in humanized (h)ApoE knock-in rats were performed to test causality. Results: AIHH-induced changes in diaphragm MEP amplitudes were lower in individuals heterozygous for APOE4 (i.e., APOE3/4) compared to individuals with other APOE genotypes (P = 0.048) and the other tested SNPs. Males exhibited a greater diaphragm MEP enhancement versus females, regardless of age (P = 0.004). Additionally, age was inversely related with change in P0.1 (P = 0.007). In hApoE4 knock-in rats, AIHH-induced phrenic motor plasticity was significantly lower than hApoE3 controls (P < 0.05). Conclusions: APOE4 genotype, sex, and age are important biological determinants of AIHH-induced respiratory motor plasticity in healthy adults. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is commonly applied plasticizer in plastic products such as face masks, easily leaches or migrates into environment and its widespread contamination posed profound health risks. Further concerns rise regarding to the toxicity of DBP at subcellular level, while little is known about the ranging effects on mitochondrial susceptibility. Present study investigated the mitochondrial impairments with implicated cell death upon DBP exposure on zebrafish cells. Elevated mitochondrial oxidative stress reduced its membrane potential and count, enhanced fragmentation, and impaired ultrastructure that showed smaller size and cristae rupture. Afterwards, the critical function of ATP synthesis was damaged and the stabilized binding capacity between DBP with mitochondrial respiratory complexes was simulated by the molecular docking. And the top pathways enrichment of mitochondrion and metabolism by transcriptome analyses verified the mitochondrial dysfunction that indicated the human diseases risks. The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication and transcription with DNA methylation modifications were also disrupted, reflecting the genotoxicity on mtDNA. Moreover, the activated autophagy and apoptosis underlying mitochondrial susceptibility integrated into cellular homeostasis changes. Background: Evidence has linked self-reported sedentary behavior (SB) and physical activity (PA) with cognitive impairment; however, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We examined the associations of the accelerometer-measured movement behaviors with plasma neurofilament light chain (NfL) among older adults and the role of systemic low-grade inflammation in the associations. Results: This population-based study included 1,029 dementia-free older adults (age ≥ 60 years, range 60–88 years; 59.48% women) who undertook the ActiGraph substudy (March 2018-December 2020) in MIND-China. There were nonlinear relationships of daily SB and PA time with plasma NfL concentration, such that more daily SB time or less time spent in daily light-intensity physical activity (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) was significantly associated with increased plasma NfL only when SB time ≥ 8.00 h/day or LPA time < 5.00 h/day or MVPA time < 2.00 h/day. Furthermore, more daily SB time or less daily LPA and MVPA time was significantly associated with higher serum low-grade inflammation score, a composite measure generated from serum IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and ICAM-1 (P < 0.05). Finally, low-grade inflammation score accounted for 14.5% to 17.8% of the associations between movement behaviors and plasma NfL. Conclusions: More daily SB and less PA time are associated with neurodegeneration and systemic low-grade inflammation in older adults. Methods: This population-based cohort study included 2,127 dementia-free participants (≥60 years; 59.4% women; 81.5% with no or elementary school) who were examined at baseline (August-December 2014) and follow-up (March-September 2018). Lifelong CR score at baseline was generated from six lifespan intellectual factors. Dementia, MCI, and their subtypes were defined according to the international criteria. Data were analyzed using Cox proportional-hazards models. Results: During the total of 8,330.6 person-years of follow-up, 101 persons were diagnosed with dementia, including 74 with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 26 with vascular dementia (VaD). The high (vs. low) tertile of lifelong CR score was associated with multivariable-adjusted hazards ratios (95% confidence interval) of 0.28 (0.14–0.55) for dementia and 0.18 (0.07–0.48) for AD. The association between higher CR and reduced AD risk was significant in people aged 60–74 but not in those aged ≥75 years (p for interaction = 0.011). Similarly, among MCI-free people at baseline (n = 1,635), the high (vs. low) tertile of lifelong CR score was associated with multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios of 0.51 (0.38–0.69) for MCI and 0.46 (0.33–0.64) for amnestic MCI. Lifelong CR was not related to VaD or non-amnestic MCI. Discussion: High lifelong CR is associated with reduced risks of dementia and MCI, especially AD and amnestic MCI. To investigate the ability of the ratio of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) to serum albumin ratio (BAR) in patients with sepsis in intensive care units (ICUs) to predict the prognosis of short-and long-term death. Data are from the Marketplace for Intensive Care Medical Information IV (MIMIC-IV v2.0) database for patients with sepsis as defined by SEPSIS-3. The primary outcome was 30-day mortality and the secondary outcome was 360-day mortality. Kaplan–Meier (KM) survival curves were plotted to describe differences in BAR mortality in different subgroups and area under the curve (AUC) analysis was performed to compare the predictive value of sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA), BAR, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and albumin. Multivariate Cox regression models and subgroup analysis were used to determine the correlation between BAR and 30-day mortality and 360-day mortality. A total of 7656 eligible patients were enrolled in the study with a median BAR of 8.0 mg/g, including 3837 in the ≤ 8.0 group and 3819 in the BAR > 8.0 group, with 30-day mortality rates of 19.1% and 38.2% (P < 0.001) and 360-day mortality rates of 31.1% and 55.6% (P < 0.001). Multivariate Cox regression models showed an increased risk of death for 30-day mortality (HR = 1.219, 95% CI 1.095–1.357; P < 0.001) and 360-day mortality (HR = 1.263, 95% CI 1.159–1.376; P < 0.001) in the high BAR group compared to the low BAR group. For the 30-day outcome, the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.661 for BAR and 0.668 for 360-day BAR. In the subgroup analysis, BAR remained an isolated risk factor for patient death. Background: Few community-based studies have examined occurrence and progression of subjective cognitive decline (SCD). Objective: To investigate prevalence and progression of SCD among rural-dwelling Chinese elderly people. Methods: This cohort study included 2,488 cognitively unimpaired adults (age≥65 years) who were examined at baseline (2014-2015) and followed in 2018. Demographic, epidemiological, clinical, and neuropsychological data were collected via in-person interviews and clinical examinations following a structured questionnaire. At baseline, SCD was assessed using the self-rated Ascertain Dementia 8-item Questionnaire. At follow-up, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) were clinically diagnosed following the international criteria. Data were analyzed using logistic regression models. Results: The prevalence of SCD was 40.07%. SCD at baseline was associated with the multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 1.51 (95% confidence interval 1.10–2.07) for incident cognitive impairment, no dementia (CIND) and 3.11 (1.64–5.93) for incident AD. Among people with SCD at baseline, the multivariable-adjusted OR of incident CIND was 0.55(0.32–0.96) for hyperlipidemia; the multivariable-adjusted OR of incident AD was 1.21 (1.14–1.30) for older age, 0.32 (0.12–0.88) for high education, 2.60 (1.11–6.08) for carrying APOEɛ4 allele, and 0.34 (0.13–0.86) for high social support, whereas the multivariable-adjusted OR of incident VaD was 6.30 (1.71–23.18) for obesity. Conclusion: SCD affects over 40% of rural-dwelling cognitively unimpaired older adults in China. SCD is associated with accelerated progression to CIND and AD. Older age, lack of school education, APOEɛ4 allele, and low social support are associated with an increased risk of progression from SCD to AD, whereas obesity is related to accelerated progression to VaD. Background: Microvascular dysfunction (MVD) may contribute to cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease, but evidence is limited. Objective: To investigate the association of composite and organ-specific MVD burden with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and cognition among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults. Methods: In this population-based cross-sectional study, we assessed MVD makers using optical coherence tomographic angiography for retinal microvasculature features, brain magnetic resonance imaging scans for cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), and serum biomarkers for MVD. A composite MVD score was generated from the aforementioned organ-specific parameters. We used a neuropsychological test battery to assess memory, verbal fluency, attention, executive function, and global cognitive function. MCI, amnestic MCI (aMCI), and non-amnestic MCI (naMCI) were diagnosed following the Petersen's criteria. Data was analyzed with the linear and logistic regression models. Results: Of the 274 dementia-free participants (age≥65 years), 56 were diagnosed with MCI, including 47 with aMCI and 9 with naMCI. A composite MVD score was statistically significantly associated with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.70 (95% confidence interval 1.12–6.53) for MCI and β-coefficient of –0.29 (–0.48, –0.10) for global cognitive score after adjustment for socio-demographics, lifestyle factors, APOE genotype, the Geriatric Depression Scale score, serum inflammatory biomarkers, and cardiovascular comorbidity. A composite score of retinal microvascular morphology was associated with a multivariable-adjusted OR of 1.72 (1.09–2.73) for MCI and multivariable-adjusted β-coefficient of –0.11 (–0.22, –0.01) for global cognitive score. A composite CSVD score was associated with a lower global cognitive score (β= –0.10; –0.17, –0.02). We sought to examine the associations of common WWC1 variants with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD) among rural-dwelling older adults in China. This population-based study used data from the baseline assessments (March –September 2018) of MIND-China. AD and VaD were diagnosed following the international criteria. Of the 5455 participants (age≥60 years, 57.27% women), 182 were diagnosed with AD and 88 with VaD. Logistic regression analysis suggested that WWC1 rs17070145 C allele (vs. T) was associated with multivariable-adjusted odds ratio of 1.23 (95% confidence interval 0.96–1.58) for AD, and that CC genotype (vs. TT) was associated with multivariable-adjusted odds ratio of 2.19(1.10–4.39) for VaD, but the association with VaD became non-significant when further adjusting for stroke history. Furthermore, exonic SNPs rs3822660 and rs3822659 were in strong linkage disequilibrium (LD) with rs17070145 (D' = 0.88). These results suggest that the strong LD between rs17070145 and 2 exonic SNPs may explain the association of WWC1 rs17070145 C allele with AD and that stroke may partly explain the association of WWC1 rs17070145 CC genotype with VaD. Background: Emerging evidence has linked electrocardiographic parameters with serum adhesion molecules and cognition; however, their interrelationship has not been explored. Objective: We sought to investigate the associations of ventricular depolarization and repolarization intervals with serum adhesion molecules and cognitive function among rural-dwelling older adults. Methods: This population-based study engaged 4,886 dementia-free participants (age ≥60 years, 56.2% women) in the baseline examination (March-September 2018) of MIND-China. Of these, serum intercellular and vascular adhesion molecules (ICAM-1 and VCAM-1) were measured in 1591 persons. We used a neuropsychological test battery to assess cognitive function. Resting heart rate, QT, JT intervals, and QRS duration were assessed with electrocardiogram. Data were analyzed using general linear models adjusting for multiple confounders. Results: Longer JT interval was significantly associated with lower z-scores of global cognition (multivariable-adjusted β= –0.035; 95% confidence interval = –0.055, –0.015), verbal fluency (–0.035; –0.063, –0.007), attention (–0.037; –0.065, –0.010), and executive function (–0.044; –0.072, –0.015), but not with memory function (–0.023; –0.054, 0.009). There were similar association patterns of QT interval with cognitive functions. In the serum biomarker subsample, longer JT and QT intervals remained significantly associated with poorer executive function and higher serum adhesion molecules. We detected statistical interactions of JT interval with adhesion molecules (pinteraction <0.05), such that longer JT interval was significantly associated with a lower executive function z-score only among individuals with higher serum ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. Conclusion: Longer ventricular depolarization and repolarization intervals are associated with worse cognitive function in older adults and vascular endothelial dysfunction may play a part in the associations. Background: Cognitive reserve (CR) partly explains cognitive variability in the presence of pathological brain aging. Objective: We investigated the interplay of lifelong CR with age, sex, and brain aging markers in cognitive phenotypes among older adults with very limited education. Methods: This population-based cross-sectional study included 179 dementia-free participants (age ≥65 years; 39.7% women; 67.0% had no or elementary education) examined in 2014–2016. We assessed lacunes and volumes of hippocampus, ventricles, grey matter, white matter (WM), and white matter hyperintensities. Lifelong CR score was generated from six lifespan intellectual factors (e.g., education and social support). We used Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score to assess cognition and Petersen's criteria to define mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Data were analyzed using general linear and logistic models. Results: The association of higher lifelong CR score (range: –4.0–5.0) with higher MMSE score was stronger in women (multivariable-adjusted β-coefficient and 95% CI: 1.75;0.99–2.51) than in men (0.68;0.33–1.03) (pinteraction = 0.006). The association of higher CR with MCI (multivariable-adjusted odds ratio and 95% CI: 0.77;0.60–0.99) did not vary by age or sex. Among participants with low CR (<1.4[median]), greater hippocampal and WM volumes were related to higher MMSE scores with multivariable-adjusted β-coefficients being 1.77(0.41–3.13) and 0.44(0.15–0.74); the corresponding figures in those with high CR were 0.15(–0.76–1.07) and –0.17(–0.41–0.07) (pinteraction <0.01). There was no statistical interaction of CR with MRI markers on MCI. Conclusion: Greater lifelong CR capacity is associated with better late-life cognition among people with limited education, possibly by compensating for impact of neurodegeneration. Chemokines may promote neuroinflammation following traumatic brain injury (TBI), thereby exacerbating secondary injury. This study was designed to investigate the contributions of chemokines (CCL2, CCL5, CXCL1, CXCL10, and CXCL13) to TBI severity and clinical outcome. Peripheral blood was drawn from 92 TBI patients on admission, and 40 controls were recruited. Serum concentrations of CCL2, CCL5, CXCL1, CXCL10, and CXCL13 on admission were measured by ELISA. Preoperative clinical severity was evaluated using the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS), and clinical outcome at 90 days post-TBI was evaluated using the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS). The associations were evaluated by calculating Spearman's correlation coefficients. A binary logistic regression model was used to identify clinicodemographic factors influencing outcome, and ROC curves were constructed. Serum concentrations of CCL2, CCL5, CXCL1, CXCL10, and CXCL13 were elevated significantly after TBI and negatively correlated with GCS and GOS scores except CCL5. CCL2 may be considered as an independent predictor to predict severity and outcome. Moreover, combination of GCS score, CCL2, and CXCL10 can be a better assessment prognosis of moderate and severe TBI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The breakdown of the blood–brain barrier, which develops early in Alzheimer's disease (AD), contributes to cognitive impairment. Exercise not only reduces the risk factors for AD but also confers direct protection against cognitive decline. However, the exact molecular mechanisms remain elusive, particularly whether exercise can liberate the function of the blood–brain barrier. Here, we demonstrate that long‐term exercise promotes the clearance of brain amyloid‐β by improving the function of the blood–brain barrier in 5XFAD mice. Significantly, treating primary brain pericytes or endothelial cells with exosomes isolated from the brain of exercised 5XFAD mice improves cell proliferation and upregulates PDGFRβ, ZO‐1, and claudin‐5. Moreover, exosomes isolated from exercised mice exhibit significant changes in miR‐532‐5p. Administration or transfection of miR‐532‐5p to sedentary mice or primary brain pericytes and endothelial cells reproduces the improvement of blood–brain barrier function. Exosomal miR‐532‐5p targets EPHA4, and accordingly, expression of EphA4 is decreased in exercised mice and miR‐532‐5p overexpressed mice. A specific siRNA targeting EPHA4 recapitulates the effects on blood–brain barrier‐associated cells observed in exercised 5XFAD mice.
