9. Efficient Fluorescence Utilization and Photon Density of States‐Driven Design of Liquid Crystal Lasers.

Abstract

Liquid‐crystal random lasers (LCRLs) represent a burgeoning field in soft‐matter photonics, holding promise for ushering in an era of ultrathin, versatile laser sources. Such lasers encompass a multitude of remarkable features, including wide‐band tunability, large coherence area and, in some cases, multidirectional emission. In this paper, an LCRL is developed by doping a laser dye, pyrromethene 597 (PM597), into cholesteric LC, but achieving a wide‐range wavelength‐controllable (560–720 nm) bandgap lasing through voltage control. Bandgap lasing intriguingly occurs in media with extremely low dye gain, which is mainly contributed by the extremely high photon density of states (DOS) at the edge of the LC bandgap. In addition, the utilization rate of the fluorescence spectrum (550–750 nm) of laser dye PM597 is as high as 80%. The multivariate linear regression model is used to characterize the inherent relationship between the lasing intensity emitted by LC and the photon DOS, fluorescence quantum yield, and internal scattering under specific pumping energy. This model shows the potential to predict the critical conditions of laser emission accurately and provides the capability to design and fabricate large‐scale multifunctional responsive photonic crystals using a simple fabrication procedure. Abstract

This study first demonstrates that the random distributed feedback fiber laser (RDFL) can be implemented for sensing detection by using the self-mixing effect as a sensing mechanism. By constructing a compact self-mixing velocimeter based on Er-doped RDFL with the integration of a laser, sensing element, and transmission platform, we successfully measured the minimum detectable feedback intensity of 38.65 fW for the velocity signal, corresponding to 0.55 photons per Doppler cycle, exhibiting ultra-high sensitivity dynamics characteristics. In addition, the velocity measurement of a non-cooperative target at a single-channel distance of 100 km is accomplished because of the natural feature of long-distance transmission for the random distributed feedback fiber lasers, which greatly improves the ultra-long detection range in the field of self-mixing sensing. The proposed sensing scheme not only unveils a fresh perspective on the exploration of random fiber laser sensing but also showcases its diverse and wide-ranging applications within the realm of remote sensing measurements. Abstract

Random lasers (RLs), which possess peculiar advantages (e.g., emission and coherence tunable) over traditional lasers with optical resonators, have witnessed rapid development in the past decades. However, it is still a challenge to tune the lasing peak of an RL over a wide range. Here, a temperature-dependent Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) RL is demonstrated in pyrromethene 597 (PM597, “donor”) and Nile blue (NB, “acceptor”) doped chiral liquid crystals. By changing the temperature that drives the liquid crystal bandgap shift, our RL device exhibits a lasing output change from 560 nm (yellow) to 700 nm (red). While the intrinsic FRET efficiency between PM597 and NB is relatively low, the red lasing is weak. By introducing gold nanorods (GNRs) into these RL devices and utilizing GNRs’ localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect, the efficiency of FRET transfer is increased by 68.9%, thereby reducing the threshold of the RL devices. By tuning the longitudinal LSPR to match the emission wavelength of NB, the best 200-fold lasing intensity enhancement is recorded. Our findings open a pathway toward realizing LSPR-enhanced FRET tunable RLs and broaden the range of their possible exploration in photonics research and technologies.

Abstract

Replica symmetry breaking (RSB) has been widely recognized as a statistical analysis approach to understand the disorder and nonlinear interactions in complex systems ranging from atoms to the cosmic scale. However, it is challenging to analyze the nonlinear optical characteristics of random laser (RL) in disordered gain medium via RSB due to the lack of a general RSB-based statistical analysis framework. In this work, we report the tunable RSB in polymer fiber RL, where the effects of temperature and different structures on RSB are investigated experimentally and theoretically. It experimentally proves that RSB in RL is not robust, and disorder and temperature are responsible for tunable RSB in RL, which contributes to the improvement of the statistical analysis framework for investigating the optical principles of RL using RSB. And the finding of the tunable RSB allows to investigate the dynamical differences for various RL systems, which broadens the directions for the use of spin-glass theory to explore the physical mechanism of RL.

26. Coherent Random Lasing Realized in Polymer Vesicles

Abstract

We have demonstrated the realization of a coherent vesicle random lasing (VRL) from the dye doped azobenzene polymer vesicles self-assembled in the tetrahydrofuran-water system, which contains a double-walled structure: a hydrophilic and hydrophobic part. The effect of the dye and azobenzene polymer concentration on the threshold of random laser has been researched. The threshold of random laser decreases with an increase in the concentration of the pyrromethene 597 (PM597) laser and azobenzene polymer. Moreover, the scattering of small size group vesicles is attributed to providing a loop to boost the coherent random laser through the Fourier transform analysis. Due to the vesicles having the similar structure with the cell, the generation of coherent random lasers from vesicles expand random lasers to the biomedicine filed.

27. High-speed space optical communication based on metal halide perovskite single crystals.

Abstract

In recent years, metal halide single crystals (SCs) have attracted increasing attention because of their excellent optical and electrical properties. In this paper, high-quality Cs4PbBr6 SCs were synthesized using a simple HBr-assisted method while possessing outstanding optical properties, including high stability, efficient photoluminescence, and quick radiative recombination rate. The SCs were successfully applied in visible light communication, demonstrating excellent performance. The transmission rate of Cs4PbBr6 SCs can reach up to 50 Mb s−1 at only −24 dBm emission intensity to transmit the signal. Notably, the SCs demonstrated the capability to emit fluorescence over a wide range of angles, while ensuring reliable signal transmission. Abstract

Hundreds of Megabit per second (Mb/s) data transmission over a moderate range (10m) underwater optical wireless channel is implemented with 4-level pulse amplitude modulation scheme using an off-the-shelf light-emitting diode as the optical source and digital equalizers. In particular, the channel nonlinear distortion from light-emitting diode is considered and a matched model is developed. To mitigate these distortions under various 4-level pulse amplitude modulation signal baud rates, the Bit error rate (BER) and Signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performances of the pre-, post- and matchedequalizers are evaluated and compared. The digital matched-equalizer bank is shown and verified to offer the best BER/SNR performance for 4-level pulse amplitude modulation signal using more than 200 MBaud rate. With the proposed equalizer, we have recorded the highest data rate of 600Mb/s at 20% FEC limit over 10m free-space underwater link.

Abstract

In waveguided nematic liquid crystal random lasers (NLCRLs), we realize polarized random laser (RL) emission and discover that the waveguide effect reduces the transmission loss of the RL whose polarization is parallel to the liquid crystal molecules (LCMs). Compared with the traditional liquid crystal random lasers, the waveguide NLCRLs can achieve the regulation of RLs strength, polarization, and wavelength in the same structure. The electric field can drive the rotation of LCMs to control the RL polarization and intensity. The drop of horizontal polarization laser and the increase of vertical polarization laser prove the role of the waveguide effect. In addition, the disorder of the waveguided NLCRLs is highly sensitive to temperature, which makes it easy to control the wavelength and intensity of the RL. As the temperature rises, the waveguide effect is weakened, resulting in a weakening of the restriction along liquid crystal (LC) cell normal direction. Abstract

In contrast to conventional anti‐counterfeiting technologies, which are susceptible to decryption and exhibit limited effectiveness, the utilization of light to dynamically configure soft materials in a fully reversible and programmable manner not only enhances data security but also improves anti‐counterfeiting performance. However, achieving precise control over reflection structural colors and laser wavelengths within a broad dynamic range remains a challenge. In this study, a UV‐responsive soft helical superstructure is established by combining a photochromic compound with chiral liquid crystals (LCs). By manipulating the Bragg reflection angle, structural reflection colors ranging from red to cyan are successfully achieved. The introduction of an anti‐counterfeiting technique that embeds diverse micro‐structures provides features such as color adjustability, erasability, and angle‐dependent stability. Using the unique properties of this soft helical superstructure, the implementation of a wavelength‐tunable LC bandgap laser through optically reconfigurable Förster resonance energy transfer processes is showcased. Furthermore, a straightforward prototype information encoder is developed to mimic the processes of information encoding and decoding, bypassing the need for complex algorithm design. This research underscores the practicality of LC helical soft systems, emphasizing their distinctive responsiveness to light and their applicability in optical programming photonics.
