Abstract The interaction between lattice vibrations and electrons plays a key role in various aspects of condensed matter physics — including electron hydrodynamics, strange metal behavior, and high-temperature superconductivity. In this study, we present systematic investigations using Raman scattering and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to examine the phononic and electronic subsystems of the topological superconductor candidate 2M-WS2. Raman scattering exhibits an anomalous nonmonotonic temperature dependence of phonon linewidths, indicative of strong phonon–electron scattering over phonon–phonon scattering. The ARPES results demonstrate pronounced dispersion anomalies (kinks) at multiple binding energies within both bulk and topological surface states, indicating a robust and mode-selective coupling between the electronic states and various phonon modes. These experimental findings align with previous calculations of the Eliashberg function, providing a deeper understanding of the highest superconducting transition temperature observed in 2M-WS2 (8.8 K) among all transition metal dichalcogenides as induced by electron–phonon coupling. Furthermore, our results may offer valuable insights into other properties of 2M-WS2 and guide the search for high-temperature topological superconductors.

This study examines the clinically comprehensive effects of Wuzi Shenqi Decoction, an acupoint application that combines traditional Chinese medicine with western medicine on male infertility with oligoasthenospermia of kidney-yang deficiency type. A total of 184 male infertiles with oligoasthenospermia who came to our hospital from April 2022 to June 2023 were randomly assigned to a study group (n = 92) and an experimental group (n = 92). The experimental group was treated with L-carnitine oral solution, while the study group was treated with Wuzi Shenqi Decoction combined with acupoint application based on the experimental group. Before and after treatment, clinical efficacy, semen parameters (semen volume, sperm density, sperm survival rate, sperm motility), sexual hormone parameters (follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), testosterone (T), prolactin (PRL), estradiol), and TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) syndrome scores were observed and compared between both groups. Before treatment, there was no significant difference in semen parameter index, sexual hormone index and TCM syndrome score between both groups (p > 0.05); after treatment, the semen parameter index and sexual hormone index in both groups were higher than before treatment, and the TCM syndrome score was diminished with a significant difference (p < 0.05). The overall response rate of the study group was 92.39%, which was significantly higher than that of the experimental group (72.83%) (p < 0.05). For male infertility patients with oligoasthenospermia of kidney-yang deficiency type, the use of Wuzi Shenqi Decoction combined with traditional Chinese medicine acupoint application plus L-carnitine oral solution can effectively improve the clinical symptoms of patients, improve semen quality, regulate sex hormone levels, which is worthy of clinical application.

Abstract The effect of double filtration plasma apheresis (DFPP) on improving the outcomes of patients with hypertriglyceridaemia-induced acute pancreatitis (HTG-AP) remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the initiation time of DFPP and the risk of persistent organ failure (POF) in an HTG-AP cohort in China. We retrospectively evaluated data from HTG-AP patients treated with DFPP 48 h after diagnosis between January 2017 and January 2022. Comparisons across tertiles of the interval from diagnosis to completion of one DFPP session (DTD) were analysed. Logistic regression models and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to determine the correlation between the DTD time and risk of POF. Of the 89 patients enrolled, 46 patients (51.69%) suffered POF in the first week of HTG-AP. DFPP was initiated at a median of 17 h after the diagnosis was confirmed. The patients in the highest tertile of DTD time had a significantly increased prevalence of POF. After multivariate adjustment, the logistic regression models found a significant decrease in the odds ratios (OR) of POF from the highest to the lowest DTD tertile (P for trend = 0.006). Moreover, the RCS curves showed a nonlinear relationship in the adjusted OR of POF and DTD time, which remained relatively low and flat during the early DTD time but increased sharply afterwards. Early initiation of DFPP treatment correlates with a reduced risk of POF in HTG-AP patients.

Abstract This study was conducted in the Central Himalayan middle hills to understand the nature of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) embedded in aerosol particles, their sources and human health risk assessments. The level of sum of 15 particle-phase PAHs was between 9 and 335 ng/m3, with an average concentration of 73±66 ng/m3. There were strong seasonal differences in total suspended particles (TSP) and particle-bound PAH concentrations with higher concentrations in winter, followed by pre-monsoon and lowest in monsoon. The main contributor to the suspended particles was 5-ring PAHs (32%), followed by 4-ring (29%), 6-ring (28%), and 3-ring PAHs (11%). Conversely, the gas-phase PAHs showed that 3-ring PAHs contributed utmost to the total particles. The molecular ratios and principal component analysis indicated that both petrogenic and pyrogenic sources, particularly fossil fuel combustion, biomass combustion, and car exhausts, were the major sources of PAHs. The overall average Benzo (a)pyrene equivalent concentration of particulate PAHs was 11.71 ng/m3, which substantially exceeded the WHO guideline (1 ng/m3), and indicated the potential health risks for local residents. The average lifetime inhalation cancer risk (ILCR) estimates associated with carcinogenic PAHs was 8.78×10−6 for adults, suggesting the possible cancer risk and 2.47×10−5 for children, signifying extreme carcinogenic effects of PAHs on children’s health. Therefore, strict measures should be taken to reduce PAHs emissions in the region.

Duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV), an emergent flavivirus, causes domestic waterfowls to suffer from severe egg-drop syndrome and fatal encephalitis, greatly threatens duck production globally. Like other mosquito-borne flaviviruses, the envelope (E) protein of all DTMUV strains was N-glycosylated at the amino acid position 154. Thus far, the biological roles of DTMUV E glycosylation have remained largely unexplored. Herein, we demonstrated the key roles of E glycosylation in the replication and pathogenicity of DTMUV in ducks by characterizing the reverse-genetics-derived DTMUV wild-type MC strain and MC bearing mutations (N154Q and N154I) that abolish the E glycosylation. Our data showed that the disruption of E glycosylation could substantially impair virus attachment, entry, and infectivity in DEFs and C6/36 cells. Notably, ducks inoculated intracerebrally with the wild-type virus exhibited severe disease onset. In contrast, those inoculated with mutant viruses were mildly affected as manifested by minimal weight loss, no mortality, lower viral loads in the various tissues, and reduced brain lesions. Attenuated phenotypes of the mutant viruses might be partly associated with lower inflammatory cytokines expression in the brains of infected ducks. Our study offers the first evidence that E glycosylation is vital for DTMUV replication, pathogenicity, and neurovirulence in vivo.

ABSTRACT In China, the duck industry has been severely impacted by the newly emerging duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV). For DTMUV to successfully infect host cells, it employs several strategies that subvert the host's innate immune response. It has been found that several viral proteins encoded by DTMUV have strategically targeted the crucial molecules of the RIG-I-like Receptor (RLR) signaling pathway to antagonize host antiviral responses. However, it is not well known how the host proteins manipulated by DTMUV contribute to innate immune evasion. The present study reports that duck TRIM35 (duTRIM35) antagonizes DTMUV-induced innate immune responses by targeting duck RIG-I (duRIG-I) in duck embryo fibroblasts. A significant increase in duTRIM35 expression occurred during DTMUV infection. DuTRIM35 overexpression suppressed DTMUV-triggered expression of interferon beta (IFN-β) and interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), promoting viral replication, whereas knockdown of duTRIM35 augments the innate immune response, reducing viral replication. Furthermore, duTRIM35 significantly impaired the IFN-β expression mediated by duRIG-I but not by other RLR signaling molecules. Mechanistically, duTRIM35 interfered with duRIG-I-duTRIM25 interaction and impeded duTRIM25-mediated duRIG-I ubiquitination by interacting with both duRIG-I and duTRIM25. Our findings indicate that duTRIM35 expression induced by DTMUV infection interfered with the duRIG-I-mediated antiviral response, illustrating a novel strategy in which DTMUV can evade the host's innate immunity. IMPORTANCE Duck Tembusu virus (DTMUV), an emerging flavivirus pathogen causing a substantial drop in egg production and severe neurological disorders in duck populations, has led to massive economic losses in the global duck industry. DTMUV has employed various strategies to subvert the host's innate immune response to establish a productive infection in host cells. In this study, we report that duck TRIM35 (duTRIM35) expression was upregulated upon DTMUV infection in vitro and in vivo, and its expression antagonized DTMUV-induced innate immune responses by targeting duck RIG-I (duRIG-I) in duck embryo fibroblasts. Further studies suggest that duTRIM35 interfered with duRIG-I-duTRIM25 interaction and impeded duTRIM25-mediated duRIG-I ubiquitination by interacting with both duRIG-I and duTRIM25. Together, these results revealed that duTRIM35 expression induced by DTMUV infection downregulated duRIG-I-mediated host antiviral response, which elucidated a novel strategy of DTMUV for innate immune evasion.

Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is a critical illness characterized by a severe systemic inflammatory response resulting in persistent multiple organ failure and sepsis. The intestinal microbiome is increasingly appreciated to play a crucial role in modulation of AP disease outcome, but limited information is available about the identity and mechanism of action for specific commensal bacteria involved in AP-associated inflammation. Here we show that Bifidobacteria, particularly B. animalis, can protect against AP by regulating pancreatic and systemic inflammation in germ-free (GF) and oral antibiotic-treated (Abx) mouse models. Colonization by B. animalis and administration of its metabolite lactate protected Abx and GF mice from AP by reducing serum amylase concentration, ameliorating pancreatic lesions and improving survival rate after retrograde injection of sodium taurocholate. B. animalis relieved macrophage-associated local and systemic inflammation of AP in a TLR4/MyD88- and NLRP3/Caspase1-dependent manner through its metabolite lactate. Supporting our findings from the mouse study, clinical AP patients exhibited a decreased fecal abundance of Bifidobacteria that was inversely correlated with the severity of systemic inflammatory responses. These results may shed light on the heterogeneity of clinical outcomes and drive the development of more efficacious therapeutic interventions for AP, and potentially for other inflammatory disorders.

The dynamic characteristics of bridge structures are important in wind stability analysis, seismic design, fatigue assessment, health inspection, and maintenance of bridge structures; however, the mechanical and dynamic properties of different bridge types are different. A long-span cable-stayed bridge has the advantages of large flexibility, long natural vibration period, low natural frequency, dense spectrum, and denser modal than those of general structures. In this paper, the dynamic characteristics of a cable-stayed bridge with single pylon and single cable plane in the maximum cantilever stage and the complete bridge are analyzed. The single-tower cable-stayed bridge has some unique characteristics, such as lower cost, and a more beautiful appearance, but its torsional rigidity is lower, which increases the risk of wind damage and earthquake damage. Therefore, a finite element analysis of this bridge in the maximum cantilever state is carried out, and the influences of the main components’ rigidity, the inclination angles of the stayed cables, the supporting conditions, and the locations of the auxiliary piers are analyzed for the sustainability of this type of cable-stayed bridge. The analysis results show that a cable-stayed bridge with single pylon and single cable plane has more flexibility, and that the lateral rigidity and torsional rigidity are smaller. Structure rigidity, dip angles of the stayed cables, and positions of the auxiliary piers all have significant influences on the dynamic characteristics of cable-stayed bridges.

The dilation of concrete in the radial direction is crucial in understanding the failure process and the key to predicting the confining level of passively confined concrete. To better understand this problem, we established a mesoscale model of concrete by considering the random distribution of coarse aggregate and the different properties between mortar and concrete. The model’s validity was demonstrated by comparing with the stress–strain curves in code and the lateral–axial strain curves in test. The simulation results show that the lateral dilation is non-uniformly distributed along the specimen height and the circumferential direction of sections. Moreover, the deformation mainly occurs in the middle part of the specimen ranging from 3/8 to 5/8. The strength of concrete influences the stress ratio at maximum compressive strain, while it slightly influences the stress ratio at zero volumetric strain. The secant strain ratio is about 0.5 as the compressive stress reaches the strength of concrete. Compared with the simulation, the relationship between lateral strain and axial strain proposed by Teng and Binici shows excellent performance on the dilation trend prediction of plain concrete.
