Abstract We present a flora and fauna dataset for the Mira-Mataje binational basins. This is an area shared between southwestern Colombia and northwestern Ecuador, where both the Chocó and Tropical Andes biodiversity hotspots converge. We systematized data from 120 sources in the Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A) standard and geospatial vector data format for geographic information systems (GIS) (shapefiles). Sources included natural history museums, published literature, and citizen science repositories across 13 countries. The resulting database has 33,460 records from 6,821 species, of which 540 have been recorded as endemic, and 612 as threatened. The diversity represented in the dataset is equivalent to 10% of the total plant species and 26% of the total terrestrial vertebrate species in both hotspots. The dataset can be used to estimate and compare biodiversity patterns with environmental parameters and provide value to ecosystems, ecoregions, and protected areas. The dataset is a baseline for future assessments of biodiversity in the face of environmental degradation, climate change, and accelerated extinction processes.

Hydrophobic admixtures protect concrete from water-related degradation, although they may have negative effects over cement hydration, mechanical properties and have low miscibility with water. Aiming to overcome these drawbacks, this work studies the properties of concretes containing admixtures based on a water-soluble fluoroalkylsilane and fumed silica to densify the structure. The effects of the admixture were evaluated in terms of hydrophobic, mechanical and chemical properties.The admixture decreased capillary absorption by over 70% while also increasing the internal cohesion, despite an increased porosity. Raman and XRD analysis indicated it promoted the consumption of C3S and the formation of portlandite and C–S–H gels with higher silicon content, compensating the effect of porosity on the concrete resistance. Incorporation of fumed silica in the admixture delayed the early development of hydrated phases, but after full curing promoted a more compact structure of the cement matrix, decreasing water absorption rate and improving mechanical properties.

Gradual degradation of cementitious materials by exposure to the environment decreases the lifespan of buildings, increasing maintenance andrepair costs. Surface treatments based on alkoxysilanes may prevent weathering effects and repair onset damages, though little attention is paid to how the physical-chemical alterations caused by weathering affect their performance.This work reports a comprehensive characterization/validation of an alkoxysilane-based protective treatment on a mortar subjected to different artificial aging processes (freeze-thaw, thermal cycles, carbonation and chlorides), including measurements of water transport, mechanical properties, reaction products and durability under freeze-thaw and sulfate exposure cycles.Formation of compact silica and C-S-H gel structures decreases porosity and water absorption rate with minimal effect on vapor permeability. Bulk mechanical reinforcement and waterproofing are substantially limited on freeze-thaw aged mortars, whereas surface hardness is barely increased for carbonated mortars. These properties were found to effectively increase the mortar resistance against sulfate and freeze-thaw induced damages.

Addiction is commonly characterized by escalation of drug intake, compulsive drug seeking, and continued use despite harmful consequences. However, the factors contributing to the transition from moderate drug use to these problematic patterns remain unclear, particularly regarding the role of sex. Many preclinical studies have been limited by small sample sizes, low genetic diversity, and restricted drug access, making it challenging to model significant levels of intoxication or dependence and translate findings to humans. To address these limitations, we characterized addiction-like behaviors in a large sample of >500 outbred heterogeneous stock (HS) rats using an extended cocaine self-administration paradigm (6 hr/daily). We analyzed individual differences in escalation of intake, progressive ratio (PR) responding, continued use despite adverse consequences (contingent foot shocks), and irritability-like behavior during withdrawal. Principal component analysis showed that escalation of intake, progressive ratio responding, and continued use despite adverse consequences loaded onto a single factor that was distinct from irritability-like behaviors. Categorizing rats into resilient, mild, moderate, and severe addiction-like phenotypes showed that females exhibited higher addiction-like behaviors, with a lower proportion of resilient individuals compared to males. These findings suggest that, in genetically diverse rats with extended drug access, escalation of intake, continued use despite adverse consequences, and PR responding are highly correlated measures of a shared underlying construct. Background: The development of Raspberry Pi-based recording devices for video analyses of drug self-administration studies has been shown to be promising in terms of affordability, customizability, and capacity to extract in-depth behavioral patterns. Yet, most video recording systems are limited to a few cameras making them incompatible with large-scale studies., New Method: We expanded the PiRATeMC (Pi-based Remote Acquisition Technology for Motion Capture) recording system by increasing its scale, modifying its code, and adding equipment to accommodate large-scale video acquisition, accompanied by data on throughput capabilities, video fidelity, synchronicity of devices, and comparisons between Raspberry Pi 3B+ and 4B models., Results: Using PiRATeMC default recording parameters resulted in minimal storage (∼350MB/h), high throughput (< ∼120 seconds/Pi), high video fidelity, and synchronicity within ∼0.02 seconds, affording the ability to simultaneously record 60 animals in individual self-administration chambers for various session lengths at a fraction of commercial costs. No consequential differences were found between Raspberry Pi models., Comparison With Existing Method(s): This system allows greater acquisition of video data simultaneously than other video recording systems by an order of magnitude with less storage needs and lower costs. Background: The World Health Organization and the Global Burden of Disease study estimate that almost 800 000 people die from suicide yearly. The role of non-traditional risk factors such as climate and high-altitude exposure are poorly understood., Aims: This study aims to determine a potential relationship between altitude exposure and suicide rates among 221 cantons located at different altitudes ranging from 0 to 4300 m., Method: We conducted an 11-year, country-wide, population-based analysis on age- and gender-standardised suicide rates in Ecuador, based on the official data from the National Institute of Statistics, using all available self-harm death codes (ICD-10 codes X60-X84)., Results: A total of 11 280 cases of suicide were reported during 2011-2021. Suicide rates were higher among men (11.48/100 000). In terms of elevation, suicide rates were significantly higher among people from high-altitude cantons (3.7/100 000) versus those from low-altitude cantons. When applying the International Society Mountain Medicine categorisation, suicide rates were significantly higher at moderate- (4.3/100 000), high- (3.6/100 000) and very-high-altitude cantons (4.4/100 000) when compared with low-altitude locations (2.5/100 000)., Conclusions: Ecuador is one of the few countries that has a vast range of cantons located at different altitudes. We found that living at higher elevations is positively associated with greater suicide rates. Although the rates are significantly greater as elevation increases, a clear linear relationship is not apparent, likely because of the interplay of socioeconomic factors, including urbanicity. The effect of chronic hypobaric hypoxia on mood cannot be ruled out, although the existence of causal mechanisms remains to be elucidated.

Imine self-assembly stands as a potent strategy for the preparation of molecular organic cages. However, challenges persist, such as water insolubility and limited recognition properties due to constraints in the application of specific components during the self-assembly process. In this study, we addressed these limitations by initially employing a locking strategy, followed by a postassembly modification. This sequential approach enables precise control over both the solubility and host-guest properties of an imine-based cage. The resulting structure demonstrates water solubility and exhibits an exceptional capacity to selectively interact with anionic surfactants, inducing their precipitation. Remarkably, each cage precipitates 24 equiv of anionic surfactants even at concentrations much lower than the surfactant's critical micelle concentration (CMC), ensuring their complete removal. Molecular simulations elucidate how anionic surfactants specifically interact with the cage to facilitate aggregation below the surfactant CMC and induce precipitation as a micellar cross-linker. Gap junctions, membrane-based channels comprised of connexin proteins (Cxs), facilitate direct communication among neighbouring cells and between cells and the extracellular space through their hemichannels. The normal human breast expresses various Cxs family proteins, such as Cx43, Cx30, Cx32, Cx46, and Cx26, crucial for proper tissue development and function. These proteins play a significant role in breast cancer development, progression, and therapy response. In primary tumours, there is often a reduction and cytoplasmic mislocalization of Cx43 and Cx26, while metastatic lesions show an upregulation of these and other Cxs. Although existing research predominantly supports the tumour-suppressing role of Cxs in primary carcinomas through channel-dependent and independent functions, controversies persist regarding their involvement in the metastatic process. This review aims to provide an updated perspective on Cxs in human breast cancer, with a specific focus on intrinsic subtypes due to the heterogeneous nature of this disease. Additionally, the manuscript will explore the role of Cxs in immune interactions and novel forms of intercellular communication, such as tunneling nanotubes and extracellular vesicles, within the breast tumour context and tumour microenvironment. Recent findings suggest that Cxs hold potential as therapeutic targets for mitigating metastasis and drug resistance. Obtaining value-added products from renewable resources is limited by the lack of specific operating conditions optimized for the physico-chemical characteristics of the biomass and the desired end product. A mathematical model and statistical optimization were developed for the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) by anaerobic digestion of municipal sewage sludge. The experimental tests were carried out in triplicate and investigated a wide range of conditions: pH 9.5, 10.5, and 11.5; temperatures 25 °C, 35 °C, 45 °C, and 55 °C; primary sludge with organic loading (OL) of 10 and 14 g VS (volatile solids); and digested sludge with 4 and 6 g VS. Subsequently, a statistical search was performed to obtain optimal production conditions, then a statistical model of VFA production was developed and the optimal conditions were validated at pilot plant scale. The maximum VFA concentration predicted was 6975 mg COD (chemical oxygen demand)/L using primary sludge at 25 °C, initial OL of 14 g VS, and pH 10.5. The obtained third-degree model (r 2  = 0.83) is a powerful tool for bioprocess scale-up, offering a promising avenue for sustainable waste management and biorefinery development., (© 2024. Background Obese patients are at an increased risk of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery is an important therapeutic measure in obese patients for the management of weight and comorbidities. Data are scarce in inner-city Hispanic and Black patients who undergo bariatric surgery, which eventually leads to health disparity in this minority population. Differences between patients with and without OSA have not been assessed in this population. This study aims to answer these questions. Methodology The study was conducted in a high-volume hospital in the Bronx, New York. Before bariatric surgery, patients underwent a preoperative evaluation that included a variety of blood tests, a sleep study, esophagogastroduodenoscopy, and echocardiography. They also underwent basic anthropometric measurements, such as weight, height, and body mass index (BMI), before surgery and 6 months and 12 months postoperatively. Additional calculations were made using these anthropometric measures, namely, total weight loss, excess weight loss, and delta BMI. Results Most patients were Hispanic (85.2%), with a mean age of 41.9 ± 10.8 years. We found that of the 108 patients included in the study, 69.4% (70/108) had OSA. Preoperative BMI in the study was 43.9 ± 13 kg/m 2 . Postoperatively, the mean decrease in BMI was 12.3 ± 14.5 kg/m 2 . Total weight loss and excess weight loss were 30.2 ± 14.3 and 52.6 ± 16.6, respectively. In the absence of any complaints in early childhood, preterm children remain more at risk of encountering academic difficulties, but their clinical picture remains not well characterized. We screened visuospatial perception in 70 children born preterm consulting for scholar complaints. Developmental Coordination Disorder (with or without comorbidities) was associated with high prevalence (27%) of impaired perception of spatial relationship. Prematurely born children who obtained no diagnosis of Neuro-Developmental Disorder exhibited a high prevalence (31%) of impaired perception of object magnitude. Regression revealed that low gestational age and fetal growth restriction significantly predicted the magnitude but not the spatial relationship perception.

Solubility is an essential concept in chemistry that describes the ability of a substance to dissolve in a particular solvent. Despite its importance in many fields of science, understanding the basic principles of solubility is challenging for many undergraduate students. Notably, students often encounter difficulties in comprehending the role of counterions when dealing with charged molecules. Here, we bring the opportunity to assimilate the key concepts of solubility regarding the role of counterions by developing a straightforward, cheap, and visually appealing experiment that focuses on the strategic use of counterions to control solubility. A student questionnaire delivered encouraging results with most of students giving positive feedback in both interest and training their hands-on skills. Introduction: The LIPI, based on pretreatment derived neutrophils/[leukocytes-neutrophils] ratio (dNLR) and LDH, is associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) outcomes in advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We aimed to assess baseline LIPI correlation with durvalumab consolidation outcomes in the locally advanced setting., Material and Methods: Multicentre retrospective study (330 patients) with stage III unresectable NSCLC treated with durvalumab after chemo-radiotherapy between April 2015 and December 2020; 65 patients treated with chemo-radiotherapy only. Baseline LIPI characterized 3 groups: good (dNLR≤3+LDH≤ULN), intermediate (dNLR>3/LDH>ULN) and poor (dNLR>3+LDH>ULN). Primary endpoint was overall survival (OS)., Results: In the durvalumab cohort, median age was 67 years, 95% smokers, 98% with a performance status of 0-1; 60% had nonsquamous histology and 16% a PD-L1 expression <1%. Radiotherapy was delivered concurrently in 81%. LIPI was evaluable in 216 patients: 66% good, 31% intermediate, 3% poor. LIPI significantly correlated with median OS (median follow-up: 19 months): 18.1 months vs. 47.0 months vs. not reached in poor, intermediate and good LIPI groups, respectively (P = .03). A trend between objective response rate and LIPI groups was observed: 0% vs. 41% vs. 45%, respectively (P = .05). The pooled intermediate/poor LIPI group was associated with shorter OS (HR 1.97; P = .03) and higher risk of progressive disease (OR 2.68; P = .047). Objective: Metformin (MET) is a drug used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes due to its insulin receptor sensitizing properties and anti-hepatic gluconeogenesis effect. One of the comorbidities in diabetes is the depression. This review aimed at summarizing the results of the available MET, depression and diabetes studies to clarify the possible role of MET in the depression during diabetes., Methods: A bibliographic search on PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Central for studies referring to MET, depression and diabetes., Results: Several studies have associated depression to the chronic inflammation that characterizes diabetes. Additionally MET is an anti-inflammatory molecule that generally acts by activating AMPK and inhibiting the NF-kB factor. In the context of diabetes, MET can act directly as an anti-inflammatory drug as well as inhibiting other pro-inflammatory molecules. In this regard, MET may inhibit the pro-inflammatory effects of angiotensin II. By facilitating the action of insulin and reducing hepatic gluconeogenesis, MET reduces circulating glucose levels, decreasing the formation of advanced glycation end products and therefore inflammation. During diabetes, the gut microbiota and the permeability of the intestinal barrier are altered, causing high levels of circulating lipopolysaccharides (LPS), which induce inflammation. MET can normalize the microbiota and the intestinal barrier permeability reducing the levels of LPS and inflammation. Clinical and experimental studies show the anti-depressant effect of MET mediated by different mechanisms both at the peripheral level and in the central nervous system., Conclusion: Therefore, MET as an anti-inflammatory drug can decrease symptoms of depression and represents a therapeutic approach to improve the psychological state of patients with diabetes. The aim was to understand the way of life and self-care practices in mental health among adult male farmers living in a municipality in the Risaralda department, located in the coffee axis of Colombia, marked by a high incidence of suicides. An ethnographic study was conducted between March and December 2021, employing a combination of methods including interviews, participant observation, document review, and field diaries. Economic and social aspects undergoing transformations were identified, impacting gender roles, family dynamics, and caregiving possibilities for these men. By observing how men discuss their suffering and the resources available to address it, it can be concluded that mental health practices function more as self-care resources, while health services often provide symptom-based care, neglecting attentive listening. These findings are valuable for shaping services and life care strategies that align with the conditions of rural men in Colombia.
