The vast majority of star-forming galaxies are surrounded by large reservoirs of gas ejected from the interstellar medium. Ultraviolet absorption and emission lines represent powerful diagnostics to constrain the cool phase of these outflows, through resonant transitions of hydrogen and metal ions. The interpretation of these observations is often remarkably difficult as it requires detailed modelling of the propagation of the continuum and emission lines in the gas. To this aim, we present a large public grid of ≈20 000 simulated spectra that includes H I Lyα and five metal transitions associated with Mg II, C II, Si II, and Fe II which is accessible online. The spectra have been computed with the RASCAS Monte Carlo radiative transfer code for 5760 idealised spherically symmetric configurations surrounding a central point source emission, and characterised by their column density, Doppler parameter, dust opacity, wind velocity, as well as various density and velocity gradients. Designed to predict and interpret Lyα and metal line profiles, our grid exhibits a wide diversity of resonant absorption and emission features, as well as fluorescent lines. We illustrate how it can help better constrain the wind properties by performing a joint modelling of observed Lyα, C II, and Si II spectra. Using CLOUDY simulations and virial scaling relations, we also show that Lyα is expected to be a faithful tracer of the gas at T ≈ 104 − 105 K, even if the medium is highly ionised. While C II is found to probe the same range of temperatures as Lyα, other metal lines merely trace cooler phases (T ≈ 104 K). As their gas opacity strongly depends on gas temperature, incident radiation field, metallicity and dust depletion, we caution that optically thin metal lines do not necessarily originate from low H I column densities and may not accurately probe Lyman continuum leakage. 1,1,1-trichloroethane (TCA) is a chlorinated aliphatic compound that was increasingly applied as a replacement for trichloroethylene. TCA can simultaneously follow two abiotic degradation processes: hydrolysis and dehydrochlorination, where the latter lead to the formation of a relatively recalcitrant product 1,1-dichloroethylene (DCE). The abiotic processes are relatively rapid and can be assessed based on the ratio between TCA and DCE. Using national data collected in Israel since the year 2000, this work aimed to examine the abiotic degradation extent of TCA nationally and whether it is affected by the aquifer type and unsaturated zone thickness. We have also examined temporal shifts in TCA and DCE concentrations and tested whether they follow expected trends. Our results show that the abiotic degradation of TCA is significant on a national scale, with higher DCE over TCA concentrations in ≈ 89 % of the wells. Furthermore, in ≈ 85 % of the data points, TCA over DCE concentrations indicate that TCA underwent three or more half-lives. Comparing the different lithologies of contaminated groundwater, higher concentrations are observable in karst relative to unconsolidated aquifers. Nevertheless, the ratio between the two and correspondingly the degradation rates are not affected by lithology. Finally, temporal shifts in TCA and DCE concentrations, as well as the ratio between the two, are different than expected in an idealized closed system. Purpose: This qualitative study explored First Nations (FN) women's perceptions about breast reconstruction (BR) after breast cancer surgery. Method: Participants were recruited through purposive and snowball sampling via Aboriginal health and community organizations, breast and plastic surgeons, an Aboriginal health liaison and an FN elder. Semistructured one-on-one interviews and an FN sharing circle were conducted, transcribed, and analyzed using thematic content analysis. Results: Nine women participated in the interviews. Three (33%) had been offered and had pursued BR, while 6 (67%) were either not offered or had not pursued breast reconstruction. Two of these 6 stated that they were not interested in BR. Four women participated in the sharing circle; 2 had been interviewed prior and 2 were new participants who shared similar themes and experiences to other participants also interviewed. Four key themes were identified: identity, information gaps, financial and transportation barriers, and consequences of colonization. Reasons cited to pursue BR were consistent with non-FN women such as improving self-image, concepts of femininity, and sense of normalcy. All participants reported that accessible, appropriate, and timely and culturally sensitive BR information was lacking. Living on reserve and the attendant expenses related to attending medical appointments was another barrier experienced by women in our study. The devastating impacts of colonization also deeply impacted several women in our study. Conclusion: When offered, FN women were receptive to pursuing BR. FN women have a particular set of obstacles related to consequences of colonization. Culturally sensitive and relevant oral communications grounded in first-hand experiences are desired. Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a genetic blinding disease with over 80 causative genes. Disease progression varies between patients with similar genetic backgrounds. We assessed the association between environment, gut microbiota, and retinal degeneration in the RP rat model Royal College of Surgeons (RCS). The rats were born and raised for two generations under specific pathogen-free (SPF, n = 69) or non-SPF conditions (n = 48). At the age of four weeks, SPF rats had significantly shorter dark-adapted a-wave and dark and light-adapted b-wave implicit times by electroretinogram (p = 0.014, p = 9.5*10 -6 , p = 0.009, respectively). The SPF rats had significantly less photoreceptor apoptosis at ages four, eight, and twelve weeks (all p < 0.022), significantly thicker debris zone at age 14 weeks, and smaller hypofluorescent lesions in SPF rats at ages 10-16 weeks, especially in the inferior retina. The non-SPF rats had significantly higher microbiota alpha diversity (p = 0.037) and failed to present the age-related maturation of Proteobacteria, Spirochaetes, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes seen in SPF conditions. Specific microbial amplicon sequence variants were reduced in rats with more severe retinal degeneration. Our data suggest an environmental effect on retinal deterioration in RCS rats. Background/objectives: Although there is a need for evidence-based physical activity programs in rural communities, evaluating such programs is often challenging due to access-related barriers and measurement tools that are not designed for rural contexts. This study aimed to explore and better understand the day-to-day experiences of rural-dwelling children using wrist-worn PA trackers as part of a study to develop a health promotion program., Methods: Ten caregivers and child dyads were enrolled ( n = 20). The children wore accelerometers pre- and post-intervention. Semi-structured interviews were completed post-intervention and were audio recorded, transcribed, and summary reports were generated based on recurring themes., Results: The children had a mean age of 8.7 (SD = 1.4) years and the majority were male (80%). The caregivers were female, white, and had a mean age of 43.6 (SD = 8.5) years, with an annual income of ≥USD 40,000. Factors contributing to device wear times included low caregiver burden, device functioning as a watch, and device interactivity. The children reported that the devices were acceptable, but may have changed their physical activity behaviors, with children regularly checking their step count. The caregivers preferred devices that monitored the children's activity levels without sharing location data., Conclusions: Identifying acceptable and feasible strategies to measure physical activity is vital to developing effective health promotion efforts. The lessons learned may help develop evaluation plans for implementing rural physical activity programming.

The year 2023 in Israel started with illiberal constitutional change efforts by the new right-wing government and concluded with a brutal attack by Hamas terrorists and the subsequent war. Both occurrences galvanized two massive surges of civil society activism. The first was a mass protest that impeded the government's undemocratic legislation. The second was a large-scale mobilization to support a variety of populations affected by the war, providing services and goods that supplanted the failed governmental crisis response. Using a Serving Elite perspective and elaborating on this concept in the Israeli context, the paper analyzes the organizations that transitioned overnight from protest to service delivery. While these are two known roles played by civil society in general, such a transition from protest to support within the same organization is unusual, if at all existent. The paper analyses nineteen (19) in-depth interviews with leaders of 10 prominent organizations active in the protest and the aid phases. It explores their participants, forms of organizing, activities, ideologies, and interconnections, particularly emphasizing the transition. Thematic analysis of the interviews revealed the emergence of a new Serving Elite in the making, liberal in orientation, and developed during the crises. This perspective provides an opportunity to highlight processes deeply embedded in Israel's social, political, and cultural landscapes, changing elites and power relations, and Israel's culture of entrepreneurship. Purpose: Physical activity (PA) can provide multiple benefits for children with visual impairments (VI). To date, little research has explored the retention effects of PA interventions for children with VI. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the PA experiences of parents of children with VI three months after completing a PA intervention., Method: This descriptive-qualitative study was situated in the Theory of Planned Behavior. Five parents completed semi-structured interviews that were transcribed and analyzed using a thematic line-by-line analysis., Results: Four themes characterizing how parents created PA opportunities for their children with VI were constructed: (a) Teaching from Awareness (b) Advocating for Needs, (c) Engaging Family through Community, and (d) Seeking More PA Opportunities., Conclusion: Parent's awareness of their child's abilities, parents' advocacy, and parents' teaching skills all helped to expose their children to new types of PA in the community. Parents reflected about a lack of consistently offered community-based PA for their children. Researchers must consider the importance of educating parents on how to teach skills, increase awareness, and advocate for more community-based PA programs.

Objective: An important component to effective fibromyalgia treatment is patient education about the condition. While previous educational interventions have been developed, these have not incorporated the lived experiences of patients and may not address common misunderstandings among those who may benefit from these interventions. This study aimed to explore understanding, confusion, and gaps in knowledge about fibromyalgia among those who report a fibromyalgia diagnosis., Methods: Participants were recruited via clinic flyers and the social media page of a chronic pain research laboratory. Participants completed an online survey that assessed their knowledge of fibromyalgia via open-ended questions. Responses were analyzed via thematic analysis to identify, analyze, and report themes., Results: Thirty-eight participants completed the survey (63% female, ages 18-68). Farmworkers, a group of essential workers, experience a disproportionately high burden of COVID-19 due to their living and working conditions. This project characterized farmworker mobility in and around Yuma County, Arizona, to identify opportunities to improve farmworker access to COVID-19 vaccination. We collected qualitative and geospatial data through a series of in-person and virtual focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and intercept interviews with participatory mapping. Participants included farmworkers, employers, and representatives of local institutions who serve or interact with farmworkers. We identified participants through purposive and referential sampling and grouped people by sociodemographic characteristics for interviews. We used qualitative and geospatial analyses to identify common themes and mobility patterns. The team interviewed 136 people from February 26 to April 2, 2021. Common themes emerged about how farmworkers have little or no access to COVID-19 vaccination unless offered at their workplaces or at locations where they congregate at convenient times. Further, farmworkers described how their demanding work schedules, long commute times, and caretaker commitments make it challenging to access vaccination services. Geospatial analyses identified three geographic areas in Yuma County where farmworkers reported living and working that did not have a COVID-19 vaccine clinic within walking distance. Coordination between local public health authorities and key partners, including employers and trusted representatives from local community-based organizations or the Mexican consulate, to offer vaccination at worksites or other locations where farmworkers congregate can help improve access to COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses for this population.

Background and Importance: Racial bias is found in both physicians and medical students. Immigrants in many parts of the world face challenges similar to racial minorities. Identification of immigrants might however be more subtle than identification by race, and currently, no data are available on a possible bias against the large minority group of migrants in Europe., Design: Randomized control trial., Settings and Participants: Second-year medical students were randomized into four groups to watch a video of either a male or female patient with pain, with or without immigrant status., Intervention: Students were asked whether they would administer pain medication (primary outcome)., Outcome Measures and Analysis: Immigrant status, patient's gender, student's gender, age, and language skills were covariates in a logistic regression model. Secondary outcomes included pain medication potency and the student's rating of the patient's pain intensity., Main Results: We recruited 607 students [337 females (56%), 387 (64%) between 18 and 22 years old]. Analgesia was administered in 95% (n = 576). Immigrant status was not associated with the probability of receiving pain medication [95 vs. 95%, odds ratio (OR) 0.81, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.39-1.70, P  = 0.58]. Immigrants received high-potency analgesia less often (26 vs. 33%, OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.50-0.96, P  = 0.03). Female students administered pain medication more frequently (96 vs. 93%, OR 2.29, 95% CI 1.05-5.02, P  = 0.04), and rated the patients' pain higher (mean numeric rating scale 7.7, SD 0.9 vs. 7.4, SD 1.0, OR 1.36, 95% CI 1.16-1.60, P  < 0.001)., Conclusion: Medical students showed no immigration bias with regard to administering pain medication but were less likely to choose high-potency analgesia in immigrants. We also found a gender difference in pain management. Introduction: One of the important factors in achieving gender equity is ensuring equitable surgical training for all. Previous studies have shown that females get significantly lower surgical exposure than males in certain surgical specialties. Gender gap in surgical exposure has never been assessed in plastic surgery. To that end, the goal of this study was to assess if there are any differences in plastic surgery training between male and female residents. Methods: A survey was sent to all plastic surgery residency programs in Canada to assess the No. of surgeries residents operated on as a co-surgeon or primary assistant during their training. The survey also assessed career goals, level of interest in the specialty, and subjective perception of gender bias. Results: A total of 89 plastic surgery residents (59.3% participation rate) completed the survey and were included in the study. The average No. of reconstructive cases residents operated on as a co-surgeon or primary assistant was 245 ± 312 cases. There was no difference in either reconstructive or aesthetic surgery case logs between male and female residents ( p  > .05). However, a significantly larger proportion of females (39%) compared to males (4%) felt that their gender limited their exposure to surgical cases and led to a worsening of their overall surgical training ( p  < .001). Finally, a larger proportion of male residents were interested in academic careers while a larger proportion of female residents were interested in a community practice ( p  = .024). Conclusion: While there is no evidence of differences in the volume of logged cases between genders, female surgical residents still feel that their respective gender limits their overall surgical training. Purpose: Ischemic brain injury occurs when there is reduced or complete disruption of blood flow to a brain region, such as in stroke or severe traumatic brain injury. Even short interruptions can lead to devastating effects including excitotoxicity and widespread cell death. Despite many decades of research, there are still very few therapeutic options for patients suffering from brain ischemia., Methods: We developed an in vitro brain ischemia model using our previously established 3D spheroids derived from primary postnatal rat cortex. These spheroids provide an in vivo-relevant model containing a similar cellular composition to the native cortex and a cell-synthesized extracellular matrix. This model is cost-effective, highly reproducible, and can be produced in a high-throughput manner, making it an ideal candidate for screening potential therapeutics. To study the cellular and molecular mechanisms of stroke in this model, spheroids were deprived of glucose, oxygen, or both oxygen and glucose for 24 h., Results: Both oxygen and oxygen-glucose deprived spheroids demonstrated many of the hallmarks of ischemic brain injury, including a decrease in metabolism, an increase in neural dysfunction, breakdown in the neurovascular unit, and an increase in reactive astrocytes. Thromboembolic events (TEEs) can be classified into two types: venous TEEs (vTEEs), such as pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and arterial TEEs (ATEs), such as acute myocardial infarction and cerebral infarction. Ovarian cancer has a high incidence of venous thromboembolism, with the clear cell subtype carrying the highest risk. However, the incidence of ATEs, especially cerebral infarction, in patients with ovarian carcinoma, of all subtypes, is much lower. This report is of a rare case of a 35-year-old Asian woman who presented with sudden onset of left hemiplegia and right gaze as the first presenting signs of an underlying ovarian malignancy. The patient had no pertinent medical history and no underlying cardiovascular risk factors. Final diagnosis was stage 2B clear cell carcinoma of the ovary without lymphovascular invasion arising from endometriosis. Professional identity formation has become a key focus for medical education, but there is still much to learn about how to help students develop their professional identity. At a time when influential concepts such as public- and patient-centered care have become common values, there is little research on the conceptions of the public that trainees might adopt during their training. Defining characteristics of 'good' and 'bad' physicians can be a starting point when considering how to incorporate aspects of professional behavior into medical curricula. Therefore, this study examined the essential elements of physician identity from the public's perspective. This study aimed to describe the Austrian public's viewpoint about the characteristics of 'good' and 'bad' doctors. Using a qualitative research design, interviews were conducted with the Austrian public (n = 1000, mean age 46.4 ± 15.8 years). Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed via qualitative content analysis. The respondents stated 2078 answers for 'good' and 1728 for 'bad' doctors. The content analysis produced seven categories: 'social skills' (36.3%), 'professional competence' (30.2%), 'personality' (10.8%), 'communication' (6.3%), 'practice organization' (5.9%), 'ethical and moral behavior' (5.7%), and 'I do not know, or I have no idea' (4.9%). The public can help medical students to construct their professional identity by supporting the exploration of and commitment to professional values that society expects of physicians. Ideally, fusing medical expertise with social skills will fulfill the ideal of what the public considers a 'good' doctor. This shared definition of a 'good physician' has several implications for medical education. Future physicians can benefit from education about the general population's medical needs as well as personal needs, fears, and concerns.

Although the association between balance and hearing thresholds at different frequencies in the right/left ear is crucial, it has received scant empirical attention. Balance is widely ignored when evaluating hearing in adults. This study examined the relative contribution of left versus right ear hearing at different frequencies to balance, and the mediating role of suprathreshold speech perception on age-balance associations. Pure tone hearing thresholds (500-4000 Hz), suprathreshold speech perception, balance, and risk of falling were evaluated in 295 adults. The results indicate that the right ear contributes more to balance than the left ear. This might imply dominance of the left hemisphere in processing hearing cues for balance. Frequencies within the speech range (500/1000/2000 Hz) were correlated with balance and mediated the interaction between age and balance. Organ shortage continues to be the forefront of problems facing clinical transplantation. Although xenografts serve as a promising alternative, its success is contingent upon further investigation into the mechanisms of cell-mediated xenograft rejection. Here, we explored the direct and indirect contribution of human immune cells in xenorecognition using human and murine in vitro coculture systems. Our data shows that human T cells directly recognized the xenogeneic MHC molecules since blocking of MHCs suppressed their proliferative response and cytokines production of IL-2 and IFN-γ. While B and NK cells alone did not generate a significant response, the combination of B and T cells promoted indirect xenorecognition by T cells as evidenced by an increase in B cell proliferative response. The Test of Gross Motor Development-3 is one of the most popular assessment tools in physical education and physical activity settings. It is a valid assessment originally designed to administer in-person, but the virtual administration of the assessment has yet to be deemed feasible. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore the trial feasibility of virtual data collection using the Test of Gross Motor Development-3 to assess the fundamental motor skills of children with autism spectrum disorder. Most specifically, we report on the design and feasibility of the online assessment process. A total of 22 families of children with autism spectrum disorder participated in the online data collection.
