Abstract

The present paper introduces the geometry of screen generic lightlike submanifolds of a locally bronze semi-Riemannian manifolds endowed with an (l,m)-type connection. The characterization theorems on geodesicity of such submanifolds with respect to the integrability and parallelism of the distributions are provided. It is proved that there exists no coisotropic , isotropic or totally proper screen generic lightlike submanifold of a locally bronze semi-Riemannian manifold. Assertions for the smooth transversal vector fields in totally umbilical proper screen generic lightlike submanifold are obtained. The structure of a minimal screen generic lightlike submanifold of a locally bronze semi-Riemannian manifold is detailed with an example.

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss some aspects of the energetics of a quantum Brownian particle placed in a harmonic trap, also known as the dissipative quantum oscillator. Based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, we analyze two distinct notions of thermally-averaged energy that can be ascribed to the oscillator. These energy functions, respectively dubbed hereafter as the mean energy and the internal energy, are found to be unequal for arbitrary system-bath coupling strength, when the bath spectral function has a finite cutoff frequency, as in the case of a Drude bath. Remarkably, both the energy functions satisfy the quantum counterpart of the energy equipartition theorem, but with different probability distribution functions on the frequency domain of the heat bath. Moreover, the Gibbs approach to thermodynamics provides us with yet another thermally-averaged energy function. In the weak-coupling limit, all the above-mentioned energy expressions reduce to $\epsilon = \frac{\hbar \omega_0}{2} \coth \big(\frac{ \hbar \omega_0}{2 k_B T}\big)$, which is the familiar result. Abstract

In this paper, we analyze dissipative diamagnetism, arising due to dissipative cyclotron motion in two dimensions, in the light of the quantum counterpart of energy equipartition theorem. We consider a charged quantum particle moving in a harmonic well, in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, and coupled to a quantum heat bath which is taken to be composed of an infinite number of independent quantum oscillators. The quantum counterpart of energy equipartition theorem tells us that it is possible to express the mean kinetic energy of the dissipative oscillator as a two-fold average, where, the first averaging is performed over the Gibbs canonical state of the heat bath while the second one is governed by a probability distribution function $P_k(\omega)$. We analyze this result further, and also demonstrate its consistency in the weak-coupling limit. Following this, we compute the equilibrium magnetic moment of the system, and reveal an interesting connection with the quantum counterpart of energy equipartition theorem. The expressions for kinetic energy and magnetic moment are reformulated in the context of superstatistics, i.e. the superposition of two statistics. 26. Partition of free energy for a Brownian quantum oscillator: Effect of dissipation and magnetic field

Abstract

Recently, the quantum counterpart of energy equipartition theorem has drawn considerable attention. Motivated by this, we formulate and investigate an analogous statement for the free energy of a quantum oscillator linearly coupled to a passive heat bath consisting of an infinite number of independent harmonic oscillators. We explicitly demonstrate that the free energy of the Brownian oscillator can be expressed in the form $F(T) = \langle f(\omega,T) \rangle $ where $f(\omega,T)$ is the free energy of an individual bath oscillator. The overall averaging process involves two distinct averages: the first one is over the canonical ensemble for the bath oscillators, whereas the second one signifies averaging over the entire bath spectrum of frequencies from zero to infinity. The latter is performed over a relevant probability distribution function $\mathcal{P}(\omega)$ which can be derived from the knowledge of the generalized susceptibility encountered in linear response theory. The effect of different dissipation mechanisms is also exhibited. We find two remarkable consequences of our results. First, the quantum counterpart of energy equipartition theorem follows naturally from our analysis. The second corollary we obtain is a natural derivation of the third law of thermodynamics for open quantum systems. Finally, we generalize the formalism to three spatial dimensions in the presence of an external magnetic field.

Abstract

In this brief report, following the recent developments on formulating a quantum analogue of the classical energy equipartition theorem for open systems where the heat bath comprises of independent oscillators, i.e. bosonic degrees of freedom, we present an analogous result for fermionic systems. The most general case where the system is connected to multiple reservoirs is considered and the mean energy in the steady state is expressed as an integral over the reservoir frequencies. Physically this would correspond to summing over the contributions of the bath degrees of freedom to the mean energy of the system over a suitable distribution function $\rho(\omega)$ dependent on the system parameters. This result holds for nonequilibrium steady states, even in the nonlinear regime far from equilibrium. We also analyze the zero temperature behaviour and low temperature corrections to the mean energy of the system.

Abstract

We revisit the optimal performance of a thermoelectric generator within the endoreversible approximation, while imposing a finite physical dimensions constraint (FPDC) in the form of a fixed total area of the heat exchangers. Our analysis is based on the linear-irreversible law for heat transfer between the reservoir and the working medium, in contrast to Newton's law usually assumed in literature. The optimization of power output is performed with respect to the thermoelectric current as well as the fractional area of the heat exchangers. We describe two alternate designs for allocating optimal areas to the heat exchangers. Interestingly, for each design, the use of linear-irreversible law yields the efficiency at maximum power in the well-known form, $2\eta_{\rm C}^{}/ (4-\eta_{\rm C}^{})$, earlier obtained for the case of thermoelectric generator under exoreversible approximation, i.e. assuming only the internal irreversibility due to Joule heating. Abstract

Language, cognition, and behavioral testing have become a fundamental component of standard clinical care for brain cancer patients. Many existing publications have identified and addressed potential ethical issues that are present in the biomedical setting mostly centering around the enrollment of vulnerable populations for therapeutic clinical trials. Well-established guides and publications have served as useful tools for clinicians; however, little has been published for researchers who share the same stage but administer tests and collect valuable data solely for non-therapeutic investigational purposes derived from voluntary patient participation. Obtaining informed consent and administering language, cognition, and behavioral tasks for the sole purpose of research involving cancer patients that exhibit motor speech difficulties and cognitive impairments has its own hardships. Researchers may encounter patients who experience emotional responses during tasks that challenge their existing impairments. Patients may have difficulty differentiating between clinical testing and research testing due to similarity of task design and their physician's dual role as a principal investigator in the study. It is important for researchers to practice the proposed methods emphasized in this article to maintain the overall well-being of patients while simultaneously fulfilling the purpose of the study in a research setting.

Abstract

Recent developments in the biology of malignant gliomas have demonstrated that glioma cells interact with neurons through both paracrine signaling and electrochemical synapses. Glioma-neuron interactions consequently modulate the excitability of local neuronal circuits, and it is unclear the extent to which glioma-infiltrated cortex can meaningfully participate in neural computations. For example, gliomas may result in a local disorganization of activity that impedes the transient synchronization of neural oscillations. Alternatively, glioma-infiltrated cortex may retain the ability to engage in synchronized activity in a manner similar to normal-appearing cortex but exhibit other altered spatiotemporal patterns of activity with subsequent impact on cognitive processing. Here, we use subdural electrocorticography to sample both normal-appearing and glioma-infiltrated cortex during speech. We find that glioma-infiltrated cortex engages in synchronous activity during task performance in a manner similar to normal-appearing cortex but recruits a diffuse spatial network. On a temporal scale, we show that signals from glioma-infiltrated cortex have decreased entropy, which may affect its ability to encode information during nuanced tasks such as production of monosyllabic versus polysyllabic words. Furthermore, we show that temporal decoding strategies for distinguishing monosyllabic from polysyllabic words were feasible for signals arising from normal-appearing cortex but not from glioma-infiltrated cortex. These findings inform our understanding of cognitive processing in chronic disease states and have implications for neuromodulation and prosthetics in patients with malignant gliomas.
