Polylactic acid (PLA) has garnered attention for use in interim dental restorations due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, low cost, ease of fabrication, and moderate strength. However, its performance under intraoral conditions, particularly under heat and moisture, remains underexplored. This study evaluated the mechanical properties of PLA interim crowns compared with those of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and bisphenol crowns under simulated intraoral conditions with thermocycling. Three CAD/CAM polymers—PMMA (milling), PLA (fused deposition), and bisphenol (stereolithography)—were tested for fracture resistance, hardness, and surface roughness. For fracture strength, 25 crowns from each group were cemented onto dies. The Shore D hardness and surface roughness were measured on round discs before and after 10,000 thermocycles (5°C/55°C). The surface topography was assessed via scanning electron microscopy. PMMA exhibited the highest fracture strength (2787.93 N), followed by bisphenol (2165.47 N) and PLA (2088.78 N), with no significant difference between the latter two. PMMA and bisphenol showed vertical fractures and cracks, whereas PLA showed crown tearing or die deformation. Bisphenol had the highest Shore D hardness, followed by PMMA and PLA, with no significant changes after thermocycling. The surface roughness (Ra) was lowest for bisphenol and similar between PMMA and PLA. The roughness (Rz) increased from bisphenol to PMMA to PLA. The roughness of the PMMA remained unchanged after thermocycling, whereas the Ra but not the Rz of the PLA increased. Bisphenol showed a significant increase in both Ra and Rz (p<0.0001). In conclusion, PLA interim crowns demonstrated mechanical properties comparable to those of conventional PMMA and bisphenol crowns after thermocycling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Doping quantum‐confined semiconductor nanocrystals offers an effective way to tailor their unique properties. However, the inherent challenges of nanoscale doping processes, such as the low probability of successful doping, have hindered their practical applications. Nucleation‐controlled doping has emerged as a potential solution, but a comprehensive mechanistic understanding of this process is lacking. Herein, the nucleation‐controlled doping process facilitated by magic‐sized cluster intermediates is elucidated. This approach enables the synthesis of 2D ZnSe quantum nanoribbons with two distinct doping sites. Remarkably, the identity of the dopants plays a critical role in determining the chemical pathways of nucleation‐controlled doping. Substitutional doping of magic‐sized clusters with Mn2+ ions leads to successful substitutional doping of the final 2D nanocrystals. Conversely, Co2+ ions, initially occupying substitutional positions in the magic‐sized cluster intermediates, relocate to alternative sites, such as interstitial sites, in the final nanocrystals. First‐principle calculations of dopant formation energies support these experimental findings, demonstrating the thermodynamic favorability of specific dopant site preferences. Moreover, a consistent tendency is observed in CdSe nanocrystals, suggesting that the proposed doping mechanism is generally applicable to II–VI semiconductors. This study investigated the impact of task types (functional vs. social) and the gendered voices (female vs. male) of Siri, an intelligent virtual assistant (IVA), on social presence and trust perceptions toward the IVA. In an online experiment involving 172 participants, individuals were randomly assigned to one of four conditions, interacting with Siri on their iPhones for various task inquiries. Results from multivariate analyses of covariances revealed significant differences in trust levels based on the type of task. Trust was found to be higher for functional tasks when assisted by Siri, compared to social tasks. However, there was no significant difference in trust based on Siri's gendered voices. Post-hoc analyses indicated significant interactions between the gender match of participants and Siri's gendered voices in two dimensions of trust. Men tended to trust the male-voiced Siri more than the female-voiced Siri, while women did not exhibit a preference for the female voice over the male voice. This study successfully replicated the task effect observed in prior research but did not replicate the gender effect. Key distinctions between the current study and previous ones include language and the participants' nationality, with this study focusing on Korean participants interacting with Korean Siri. In this study, we evaluated the antiphotoaging properties of Actinidia chinensis Planch (ACP) and the molecular mechanisms underlying its ability to prevent UVB-mediated photoaging. Administration of the ethanolic extract of ACP (EEACP) to the dorsal area of hairless mice effectively ameliorated UVB-mediated wrinkle formation, epidermal thickening, and loss of lipid droplets in the epidermis. Additionally, the UVB-induced loss of collagen content in the epidermis was significantly attenuated in mouse skin treated with EEACP. The expression of procollagen type 1 and metalloproteinase-1a, which are related to collagen content in the epidermis, was restored by EEACP treatment in UVB-irradiated mice and NIH-3T3 mouse skin fibroblast cells. Interestingly, EEACP effectively ameliorated UVB-induced reactive oxygen species overproduction. Furthermore, the activation/phosphorylation of AKT, rather than mitogen-activated protein kinases, has been identified as a major target of EEACP in preventing UVB-mediated photoaging. Additionally, N-(1 deoxy-1-fructosyl) valine and phenethylamine glucuronide were identified as analytical indicators of EEACP using high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry. These results suggest that EEACP can be developed as a functional natural agent capable of preventing photoaging by attenuating UVB-induced activation of the reactive oxygen species/AKT pathway. Urban green spaces (UGSs) provide numerous ecosystem services (ESs) that are essential to the well-being of the residents. However, these services are often neglected in regional urban development and spatial planning. This study quantified the ESs of a 10.25 ha UGS at Chungnam National University, Daejeon, Republic of Korea, comprising 27 species with 287 tree individuals, using i-Tree Eco. Key regulating ESs investigated included air pollution removal, carbon storage and sequestration, oxygen production, energy use reduction, avoidance of surface runoff, and replacement and functional values. Results revealed significant annual environmental benefits: 131 kg air pollutants removed (USD 3739.01 or ₩5.16 M), 1.76 Mg carbon sequestered, which is equivalent to 0.18 Mg CO2 ha−1 yr−1 (USD 289.85 or ₩0.40 M), 2.42 Mg oxygen produced, energy savings (including carbon offset) valued at USD 391.29 (₩0.54 M), and 203 m3 reduction in surface runoff (USD 413.09 or ₩0.57 M). The annual total benefits of these urban trees amounted to USD 4833.86 (₩6.67 M), USD 16.83/tree, or USD 0.089/capita. Additionally, these trees had replacement and functional values estimated at USD 311,115.17 (₩429.3 M). The study underscores that species selection and abundance of urban trees are fundamental for maximizing the ES delivery in urban areas, highlighting the role of UGSs in ecological and economical sustainability in cities. Front-of-package (FOP) is one of the most direct communication channels connecting manufacturers and consumers, as it displays crucial information such as certification, nutrition, and health. Traditional methods for obtaining information from FOPs often involved manual collection and analysis. To overcome these labor-intensive characteristics, new methods using two artificial intelligence (AI) approaches were applied for information monitoring of FOPs. In order to provide practical implementations, a case study was conducted on infant food products. First, FOP images were collected from Amazon.com. Then, from the FOP images, 1) the certification usage status of the infant food group was obtained by recognizing the certification marks using object detection. Moreover, 2) the nutrition and health-related texts written on the images were automatically extracted based on optical character recognition (OCR), and the associations between health-related texts were identified by network analysis. The model attained a 94.9% accuracy in identifying certification marks, unveiling prevalent certifications like Kosher. Frequency and network analysis revealed common nutrients and health associations, providing valuable insights into consumer perception. These methods enable fast and efficient monitoring capabilities, which can significantly benefit various food industries.
