12. AIChE Virtual Communities of Practice-Supporting Faculty during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, chemical engineering departments from around the world shifted their course offerings from in-person to online almost instantaneously. The AIChE Education Division immediately responded to this educational shift by developing five Virtual Communities of Practice (VCPs) that allowed faculty to share experiences and best practices as well as provide a network for emotional support. Community creation, methods and materials shared, and surveys related to the impact of this initiative will be discussed.

26. A smart microporous block copolymer membrane containing fluorescent europium complexes reports drug release through fluorescence changes.

Abstract

If wound dressings can be pre-medicated and can actively sense in situ drugs, this technology will enable real-time monitoring of the effectiveness of wound dressings. In this work, a novel microporous fluorescence membrane (MPFM) was synthesized using Eu3+-induced diblock poly(styrene-co-acrylate acid) 2D nano-aggregates (EIP2As) with sensitive in situ drug release tracing properties. This membrane was synthesized by interfacial aggregation of an amphiphilic block copolymer polystyrene-block-polyacrylic acid at the gas-liquid interface, induced by doped Eu3+-complexes. The hybrid membrane has a uniform porous structure, making it a good drug carrier. Simultaneously with the delayed release of the drug, added piperine can quench the fluorescence of doped Eu3+-complexes, resulting in a monitorable fluorescence increase during drug release. The fluorescent Eu3+-complex and the drug are co-localized, enabling the visualization of the drug content in the membrane by translating the drug content into the fluorescence intensity of the microporous membrane. Compared with existing dressing materials, the MPFM has a unique ability to visualize the drug content, which brings great convenience to users, significantly increases the utilization efficiency of wound dressings, and greatly reduces the waste of medical materials. 31. Excellent Electroluminescent Property of Eu3+-Induced Polystyrene-co-poly(acrylic acid) Aggregates (EIPAs) in Polymeric Light-Emitting Diodes

Abstract

Eu3+-induced polystyrene-co-poly(acrylic acid) aggregates (EIPAs) were synthesized using a self-assembly approach, and their structures and photophysical characteristics were examined to achieve effective monochromatic red emission in polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs). By adjusting the monomer ratio in RAFT polymerization, the size of Eu3+-induced block copolymer nanoaggregates can be regulated, thereby modulating the luminescence intensity. High-performance bilayer polymer light-emitting devices were fabricated using poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (PFO) and 2-(tert-butylphenyl)-5-biphenylyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD) as the host matrix, with EIPAs as the guest dopant. The devices exhibited narrow red emission at 615 nm with a full width at half-maximum (fwhm) of 15 nm across doping concentrations of 1, 3, 5, and 10 wt %. At a doping concentration of 3 wt %, the device achieved a maximum brightness of 1864.48 cd/m2at 193.82 mA/cm2and an external quantum efficiency of 3.20% at a current density of 3.5 mA/cm2. These results indicate that incorporating polystyrene-co-poly(acrylic acid) with Eu3+complexes enhances the excitation and emission intensity, as well as the structural stability of the emitting layer in PLEDs, thereby improving the device performance.

39. Improved in vitro endothelialization on nanostructured titania with tannin/glycosaminoglycan-based polyelectrolyte multilayers

Abstract

Purpose: Blood compatibility of cardiovascular implants is still a major concern. Rapid endothelialization of these implant surfaces has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance hemocompatibility and prevent complications such as thrombus formation and restenosis. The successful endothelialization of implant surfaces mostly depends on the migration of endothelial cells (ECs), the differentiation of stem cells, and the inhibition of smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation. Our previous study demonstrated that nanostructured titania surfaces modified with polyelectrolyte multilayers based on tanfloc (a cationic tannin derivative) and glycosaminoglycans (heparin and hyaluronic acid) have improved antithrombogenic properties. Methods: In this work, we used in vitro cell culture of ECs and SMCs to investigate the outcomes of these surface modifications on endothelialization. The cells were seeded on the surfaces, and their viability, adhesion, and proliferation were evaluated after 1, 3, and 5 days. Indirect immunofluorescent staining was used to determine the cellular expression of ECs through the presence of specific marker proteins after 7 and 10 days, and EC migration on the NT surfaces was also investigated. Results: The surfaces modified with tanfloc and heparin showed enhanced EC adhesion, proliferation, and migration. However, SMC proliferation is not promoted by the surfaces. Therefore, these surfaces may promote endothelialization without stimulating SMC proliferation, which could improve the hemocompatibility without enhancing the risk of SMC proliferation leading to restenosis. Conclusions: The surface modification here proposed is a promising candidate to be used in cardiovascular applications due to enhanced antithrombogenic and endothelialization properties.

Abstract

At present, down-conversion materials and doping active layer materials are effective means to improve the efficiency and stability of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Herein, environmentally friendly and cost-effective Eu3+-induced diblock polymer aggregates (EIPAs) were synthesized by the self-assembly method, and these aggregates were doped into the active layer of various non-fullerene systems, which optimized the morphology and effectively increased the ultraviolet light absorption in the range of 300–450 nm and converted into secondary emission in the visible range. Upon optimization, devices featuring PM6:IT-4F doped with a concentration of 0.2 mg mL−1 EIPAs exhibited a remarkable improvement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability, with a 10.83% increase compared to binary devices, achieving an impressive PCE of 13.82%. This enhanced performance can be attributed to the significant increase in short-circuit current density (JSC) and fill factor (FF) observed in the doped devices. Similar observations have been made with other EIPA-doped devices, further demonstrating the versatility of EIPAs in improving the overall device performance of PSCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
