Abstract

Setup fitting the requirements for the detailed study of the five-body decay of the 7H nucleus obtained as a result of the proton transfer from the 8He projectiles to the deuterium target nuclei is being built at the radioactive beam line of ACCULINNA-2 separator in the G.N. Flerov Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions. Described here is the assembly of 100 BC-404 plastic scintillators, intended for neutron detection, the annular Si detector telescope for the 3He recoils, and the detector array providing the $\Delta E$-$E$-TOF registration of 3H nuclei emitted at the 7H decay. Results obtained by the Monte Carlo simulations made for the energy values and flight passes of all these particles are given together with the luminosity expected for the discussed experiments.

Abstract

In this study, using the self/other adjective judgment task, we aimed to explore how people perceive themselves in comparison to various other people, including friends, strangers, and those they dislike. Next, using representational similarity analysis, we sought to elucidate how these perceptual similarities and differences are represented in brain activity and how aggressiveness is related to these representations. Behavioral ratings show that, on average, people tend to consider themselves more like their friends than neutral strangers, and least like people they dislike. This pattern of similarity is positively correlated with neural representation in social and cognitive circuits of the brain and negatively correlated with neural representation in emotional centers that may represent emotional arousal associated with various social objects. Aggressiveness seems to predispose a person to a pattern of behavior that is the opposite of the average pattern, that is, a tendency to think of oneself as less like one's friends and more like one's enemies. This corresponds to an increase in the similarity of the behavioral representation with the representation in the emotional centers and a decrease in its similarity with the representation in the social and cognitive centers. This can be seen as evidence that in individuals prone to aggression, behavior in the social environment may depend to a greater extent on the representation of social objects in the emotional rather than social and cognitive brain circuits. Abstract

Understanding the determinants of permeability and selectivity in biological channels serves two general purposes. It provides fundamental biophysical insights and allows the evaluation of new membrane proteins and artificial channel designs for the development of biomimetic separation membranes. This understanding relies on accurate ways to quantify unitary (single channel) solute and solvent permeabilities. However, the current research in biomimetic and bioinspired membranes and in protein biophysics tends to focus on relative permeabilities. Further, many methods and approximations currently used result in erroneous permeability values which hinder and complicate the comparison between channels. Combined, these gaps in the available measurements obscure the biophysical insights and impede the development of novel high-performance channels. In this review, we summarize in vitro model membrane systems useful to functionally characterize artificial as well as biological channels. We also critically discuss biophysical techniques capable of extracting permeability values and membrane channel densities, which are fundamental parameters required to determine accurate unitary permeability values. Pertinent examples are provided, along with advantages, disadvantages, and potential improvements needed for specific techniques to acquire accurate unitary permeability values for a diverse set of small molecules, including water, ions, weak acids and bases, neutral molecules, and protons. 37. The Evaluation of Creative Ideas in Older and Younger Adults

Abstract

Abstract.The ability to solve problems of divergent type is one of the most intact functions in successful aging. However, neurophysiologic mechanisms that support the efficiency of creative thinking remain largely unknown. This study was aimed to investigate age-related difference in localized induced electroencephalogram (EEG) changes during creative idea evaluation stage of divergent problem-solving (Alternate Uses Task), using standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography. Younger (45 women, 44 men, Mage= 22.1 years, age range: 18–30 years) and older adults (46 women, 43 men, Mage= 64.9 years, age range: 55–75 years) participated in the study. Higher synchronization in individually adjusted theta frequency band [from (individual alpha peak frequency −6 Hz) to (individual alpha peak frequency −4 Hz)] in anterior areas with the maximum values in anterior cingulate gyrus was revealed in older as compared with younger participants by group contrast. Higher desynchronization in wide beta range [from (individual alpha peak frequency +2 Hz) to 30 Hz] was localized in posterior brain regions with the highest values in posterior cingulate gyrus, precuneus, and parietal lobule in older adults. Induced beta 2 synchronization was positively correlated with originality (as measured by the mean frequency of ideas) in younger and years of education in older subjects. Based on the data, it was supposed that controlling the decision-making processes is more important for older adults while maintenance of the internal image of elements’ recombination may play essential role for younger subjects.
